[Q] Currently Reading book icon - Nook Color General

I did a search before posting but I was not able to find anything. When I first rooted my Nook to 1.0.1 the "Currently Reading" book icon in the lower left side of the screen stopped working (If I remember correctly it did nothing if I pressed it) if I picked a home launcher other than the B&N Home Launcher.
Fast forward to rooting my Nook to 1.1 using ClockWorks 1.1 about a month ago I think. The "Currently Reading" book icon worked even if I picked another home Launcher. As of the other day it stopped working but in a different way this time, even if I go back to the Stock B&N Home Launcher. Now if I press the icon it will open my current book, but it will always open it to the cover art page. If I open the book from the B&N library App the book will open to the correct page.
Has anyone experienced a loss of this feature in the save way I have? Any ideas on how to fix this?

[Q] Problem adding books to the Nc after root.

AutoNootered 1.0.1
havent gotten around to doing the 1.1 upgrade yet. Anyway, when i was unrooted i would add books (.epub) via Calibre (i had to do the mobi convert to get covers to show). So the books would then be added to the Books section in the library.
But since ive rooted, the books dont go into the book section, the go into "my files" in the library, and the covers dont show. And when i do read them this way, they cant be quick launched from the "keep reading" button on the bottom of the screen.
any idea on whats causing this? ive searched, but maybe im not using the right terms. i dont know.
also, now that i am rooted, is there any way to add a shortcut to the book from the home screen?
edit: i would add the books via Calibre with the nook connected via USB and then i would transfer to main memory.
double edit: using Zeam, the "keep reading" button on the bottom doesnt seem to work, i guess that rules that out. but i would still like the books to show in the my books section as the covers dont seem to work in my files. and i would still like to place a shortcut to it on the homescreen.
Anything?

Anyone have any ideas?
WOOHOO!!! problem solved. i launched the stock launcher and everything synced up correct.
i rebooted just to make sure, and while the "keep reading" button doesnt work, the books do show up on the Library, with the covers.
I am also new to my nook and the first thing I did was root it. I dropped some PDF files in the 'Books' folder but can't find them. I am not sure if our problems are the same but did you have the stock launcher going when you sync or did you just switch to it after you placed the files?

[For Original Nook (NOT NOOK COLOR)] Software Updates - Version 1.5

MOD EDIT: This does not affect the nook color. This is for the monochrome Nook.
What's new in V1.5?
NOOK V1.5 improves performance while adding great new features. Key updates include:
1. NEW! Stay in Sync Across Multiple Devices
Automatically sync the last page you read on your NOOK or NOOK app with another. For instance, if you stop reading on a certain page on your NOOK, you'll automatically open to the same exact place on your iPad, iPhone or Android-based Smartphone using our FREE NOOK apps.
2. NEW! Stay Organized with "My Shelves"
Create, name and organize shelves in "My B&N Library" and "My Documents" in "My Shelves". For instance, you can put all your cookbooks on one shelf, all your spy novels on another shelf, for quick and easy access.
3. NEW! Password Protect Your NOOK
Your NOOK can now be secured in two ways to prevent unauthorized use. First - you can set up your NOOK to lock when it goes into sleep mode, then unlock it with a pass code. Second - you can require a password to purchase content, so others using your NOOK cannot buy anything without your permission.
4. Faster page turns, improved search, and other optimization
How do I get Version 1.5?
The V1.5 update is available immediately as a manual download and, for those NOOKs connected to Wi-Fi®, as an automatic download. To get the software update right now, follow the instructions above for manual download. If your NOOK is registered and has Wi-Fi® connectivity (Airplane mode should be OFF and Wi-Fi® should be turned ON and connected to a hotspot), the device will automatically download the software and install it on your NOOK. If connected to Wi-Fi® and you'd like to get the update, you can tap 'Check for new B&N content' under My Library. However, if the update does not start automatically, please try again in a couple of hours or the next day or follow the instructions above to download the update file manually.
The process takes approximately 5-7 minutes via Wi-Fi® or 4-5 minutes for the manual download (depending on your connection). You should NOT turn your NOOK off while the new software is being downloaded. Once the software update is completed, your NOOK will automatically restart and display the Home screen. The software update will preserve your personal settings, including your registered account information, content, display settings, and Wi-Fi® settings.

Agreed... This isn't a "Report to mod" incident but it's disinformation at best.
How did the OP not read the information and see that this was for the original Nook?
shame on the OP getting my hopes up like that...

Hopes up? I was panicking. I had my wifi turned off for 3 days until 1.1 was figured out.

Exactly what I was thinking. Was about to shut down my nook!
The shelves thing would be nice, though. Why haven't they implemented this on the NC?
Unless they have... Ignorance, my old nemesis!
Mod notified - hopefully they get rid of this soon and stop panicing users.
I have edited the title and added a message to the OP so people don't get unduly worried about this.

You are correct, it is your nemesis.
Not only that, v1.5 for the e-ink classic Nook (black & white) ereader has been out for months and is hardly news. This thread really has no relevance and should just be deleted.

Agreed. There is no reason at ALL to keep this thread. Why leave it mods?

[Q] Washed out/missing text in rooted stock?

As always, if this is already answered elsewhere then please just send a pointer, but I couldn't find anything useful after a decent amount of searching.
After playing with NookieFroyo and NookieHoneycomb, I decided to go back to the rooted stock ROM as my daily driver. I like the status bar on the bottom with soft keys embedded, and I like having access to the B&N reader without having to dual-boot. My main issue with stock was the lack of corporate calendar, but I even managed to get that working (although the Agenda view crashes it).
The one thing odd I've noticed with the rooted stock ROM is that sometimes the color scheme seems to cause fonts not to show up in some applications, primarily in their dialogs. For example, if I go into Miren and select Settings>About Miren Browser, the text in the resulting dialog is invisible except for the URL which is underlined-blue. Similar if I go into Miren's user agent selection dialog. I see the radio buttons but not their labels.
Does anyone know why this is happening and, more to the point, how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!
I've seen this too, mostly with text next to "checkmark" settings

Google Reader App?

What's the best Google Reader app that will work for the VG?
Well...have you tried the, uh, Google Reader app?
Of course. But I am unable to get my account to connect to it I get a no accounts message and hitting "add accojnt" gets me an unableto sign in message.
I use Pulse:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alphonso.pulse&feature=search_result
works awesome, syncs with my google reader account perfectly and works great on a large screen.
I tried it a long time ago on my phone and I didn't like it, mostly because it didn't seem to fit well on the phone, but on the gTablet it's all kinds of awesome.
No issues whatsoever on vegan gingerbread rc1
I have used a bunch of the available options. If you want a fancy GUI and don't follow a ton of feeds there is pulse or feedly. A quicker/more pro type reader would be newsrob, g_reader, feedr or goodnews. Rssdemon is good, but doesn't 2 way sunc with Google reader. I think newrob might be the best of these right now, but this is very subjective and changes with releases.
I have been pleased with the features and flexibility of gReader. Works in conjunction with Google Reader feeds, and great for offline downloading and reading of RSS feeds. As I have a long commute without wireless access, the offline reading works well on the gTablet.
FeedR is the best out there. I have pulse, but just to show off. Pulse is rather pointless if you follow more than 10 feeds.
I have a problem with Google Reader and that when I click on an article it gives me a small window, about the size of a mobile phone screen to read the article and when I go back one level, it goes full screen again.
Try NewsRob

I have the same issue.
I've settled on NewsRob, which I've been using on my phone forever. Works good enough with the large GTab screen.

Did you email Google for support? If you do and enough people mention it they will incorporate it into their next build.
It's apparently a version problem, in 0.9.3....0.9.2 didn't have that problem. If I could find the 9.2 .apk file, I'd go back one version.
From my experience the "tiny window" issue is a result of the DPI setting on Vegan Tab. In order to correct an issue with the market not displaying correctly the DPI has to be set to 161, but that throws off other apps. Mainly Google Reader it seams.

I have used a lot of the readers out there. My current favorite is GoodNews. I use a lot of feeds (200+) and it seems to be the only one that can handle this load. The dev is doing a lot of new stuff and improvements.
I just recently found D7 and I'm a pretty big fan. Pretty fully featured with a nice interface. Fast too!

[Q] HD+, OOBE, and the missing browser.

Hi all,
I've had a Nook Color and a Nook Tablet. Loved them. But I don't do a lot that's technical with them. What I do is read free media (gutenberg and the like) and use the web browser. On each of those old Nooks I bypassed OOBE and enabled third party apps (not that I installed any).
I recently bought an HD+ (2.10 firmware) and I'd like to use it the same way. However, it appears that when I bypass OOBE, I do not get a 'web' nav button (or an email nav button).
I did diligently search for answers here. The closest I came was a year-old thread saying that if you bypass OOBE, you get no apps. That was for 2.05.
So my questions are (and you may assume that I won't be getting a B&N account to make it work, though I'll probably register with my wife's to see if there's any difference):
Can I get the browser to work if I bypass OOBE? (I'm assuming it's Chrome) If so, how?
If not, am I going to have to enable third party apps and sideload a launcher and browser? If that's so, any recommendations for them? For the record, I preferred the Tablet's browser to the Color's.
On the technical side, does Chrome (and the user manual) actually not exist on the HD+ until it's registered? (As in, they have to be downloaded from a registered Nook) (I suppose that's a little different way to ask the question)
Thanks for your help.
I don't know about chrome and whether it is available with oobe, but you can install third party apps by going to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and making a bootable CWM SD and flashing my enable unknown sources zip.
Also sometimes native apps like chrome are hidden by your profile settings. I can't remember exactly how to get at your profile settings but it should be explained in the B&N help online.

Leapinlar, I used your methods on my previous Nooks, so thanks for that. And I'll also use your current method on the HD+. I'll check on the profile thing, but my gut says it's bypassing the OOBE that's caising my pain, as all the manuals say you should have 5 nav buttons, and I onoy have 3. Also, I just powered it up and bypassed. No messing with profiles.
I think my test method will be to register with my wife's account. That will allow me to at least determine whether it's the bypassing that's the trouble. It does kind of throw me that the manual isn't present on the device.
Although it's completely nuts, leapinglar is right that apps can be hidden under the profile settings. In order to possibly help others, here's what I did.
1. Bypass OOBE.
2. Go to home screen by clicking the N button. Note that there are only 3 nav buttons: Library, Apps, and Store. Also notice that if you look in Apps, there are none.
3. In the lower left hand corner, there is an icon that looks like a list. Tap it, and amenu appears.
4. In the menu, tap Manage Content For Profiles. There will be an item for Apps. Open it.
5. There will be list of apps, with checkboxes next to each. Tap the checkboxes for the apps you want (for this exercise, be sure to check Chrome).
6. Tap Save.
7. Tap the back icon or click the N button to get back to the home screen.
The result is that now you will have a Web nav button.
