I'm having some problems upgrading my wife's phone. I went to the website with the upgrade instructions, downloaded Kies mini, and installed all of the drivers for the phone. I put the phone in usb debugging mode and plugged it in, but Kies doesn't see the phone. I tried messing around with some settings (i don't remember what I did) and it worked one time. And the one time it did work, it said something like unsupported device and the upgrade phone button was greyed out. I've tried searching everywhere for an answer to no avail. I don't know what I'm doing wrong
Did you use the USB port on the back of the PC?
No, I used one of the ports on the front
What sort of configuration was the phone running before you tried the update. Any customization? Rooted?
no customizations, unrooted
Make sure in the USB setting it of set to Kies (Fireware Update). This is under settings/applications

I did that. when I did switch it to kies, it said I had to turn off debugging mode. After i switched it to kies mode, i turned debugging back on. Should I not have done that?

May I ask why did you put the phone in debugging mode? You don't need to. You should do what Viper 714 suggested. Have you ever used Kies before this attempt at updating the firmware?
Feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to assist you.

I have never used kies before this. I didn't think I needed it. The instructions says debugging mode should be enabled.
Captivate Froyo update crash and how to solve
Note my device is an ATT Samsung Captivate S SGHi897
Kies would crash on the update indicating a conflict AMINIFUS.EXE from the AMINIFUSREQLEV component. Also sometimes, kies would not present the upgrade screen althought KIES sees the device memory/drives.
Here's what fixed it for me.
On the device - go to settings / development turn ON USB debuging and turn ON Allow mock locations.
With KIES running - the Capivate USB screen may not appear when you connect your USB cable. But the upgrade screen KIES will appear and start your upgrade.
IF you have a external SD card - remove prior to the update. I was able to update with my external SD card installed but when the device rebooted the device screen would go to black AFTER the ATT and Capivate splash screens and appear to hang. I removed my external card - rebooted the Capivate and the device was able to work this the initial Froyo set up screens - then the external was fine.
Samsung is aware of this problem and fix is not widely known. I person I spoke with at Samsung only discovered this fix on his previous call.
Good luck everyone. Froyo is finally OH and lastly = ATT will be rolling out an over the air update for those who do not want to go through KIEs.
You should definitely remove your SIM and external SD before flashing any new firmware, as a matter of Due Diligence.
I'd give it a try first with it disabled.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that when the phone is not in debugging mode, the phone says it's connected to kies, but kies says no phone is connected

OK I'll try again when my wife gets home with the phone. would it be a good Idea to uninstall everything and start from the beginning?
I did it with usb debugging on. The important part id make sure your in Touchwiz. Otherwise keis will not see the phone.

did kies automatically see it or did you have do anything after you plugged in your phone?
I suggest using the full KIES application itself opposed to KIESmini.
If you do a quick google search (or even search the forums here) for KIES you will soon come across a download link for the full KIES application.
KIESmini has been known to have issues with 64bit operating systems. So check into that as well.
I run Win7 64bit and I could not get KIESmini to work. It would crash (stopped responding error) every time the device was connected. So I downloaded the full KIES application and the problem was solved... Everything updated fine.

Unless you modify the built in Access database for Kies, it will not recognize the i897 as a supported device.
Back when I used to check for updates with Kies Mini frequently I always had trouble getting the phone to talk to Kies Mini. What I found worked the best is as follows:
1. Restart the PC
2. Restart the Phone
3. Disable Bluetooth on the phone if it is enabled
4. Put the phone in "Kies (Firmware update)" mode in Settings | Applications | USB Settings
5. Plug the phone into a USB port on the computer that is not on a root hub shared by any other devices (especially a keyboard or mouse).
6. Launch Kies Mini
Step 5 is very important because the phone must negotiate a USB 2.0 connection. I found that steps 1 & 2 were almost always necessary, without a clean boot on both devices, I frequently had problems. Step 3 seemed to help, though sometimes I could get the phone to connect to Kies Mini with Bluetooth enabled. I was able to get it to connect in either Kies "Firmware Update" mode, or USB debug mode. The documentation may specify USB debug mode because Bluetooth has to be disabled for USB debug mode.
I think I got it!! I uninstalled everything. Then I just did what everyone said. Used the back of the PC, made sure the phone what kies mode, with debugging, and mock locations, removed sim card and sd card...but then kies kept crashing. Then I found another post somewhere that said to uninstall IE9. I did that and now its finally working! Thanks yall for your help.
anyway I can add solved to the title?

Hello, Im having an issue updating to the latest update for the captivate. I bought mine two weeks ago and its fine and dandy however i'd like the suppose semi gps fix. I installed all the samsung drivers and using Kies Mini. When i connect my phone in Kies mode it shows up how its supposed to tells me there an update (my phone shows JF6 and so does the kies program), but when i try to update it tells me update failed please remove battery and reboot phone then try again. I've tried that, i did have my phone rooted and lagfix installed however i made sure to remove both of those before i even started the update. I also removed the market place fix to see if that was the issue and it wasn't. Does anybody have any clue as to why it keeps failing?
Thank you!
edit: by the way on my phones screen it just says mtp application and with the usb plug picture and it says initializing under it.

Go to Settings > Applications > USB Settings > Ask on connection
Also Go to Applications > Development > Enable USB Debugging
That will get rid of your MTP screen. MTP is for syncing with Windows Media Player or something along those lines.
And finally, don't bother with this update. It DOES NOT fix the GPS like AT&T and Samsung have told us. It's a waste of your time.
Just as a disclaimer up front, I haven't worked with Windows in years, I'm a complete Linux user, so don't assume I know anything. I'm not used to messing around with device drivers or searching for software on the web etc. Where Windows is concerned, I'm your 80 year old Grandmother, ok?
Ok, so with the Gingerbread firmware rolling out, I decided it might be time to try and get my Tab working with Kies. I got access to a windows machine, and went to work. Here's what I did (just in case I messed up somewhere):
Connected the Tab to the windows machine via USB, and selected mass storage device.
Windows mentioned something about needing drivers, which seemed weird (isn't the Tab a normal mass data storage device when told to be one?), but after a few seconds it claimed it was ready to use, so I went ahead and mounted it and could see my files in the Windows file browser. So far so good.
I then disconnected the Tab from windows and went looking for Kies. After some short struggle I was able to download and install it.
Next, I connected the Tab again, this time selecting 'Samsung Kies' mode. Nothing happened, neither on the Tab nor on the Windows machine.
Tried again, this time as 'Media Player'. Nothing happened.
Tried again, in Mass Storage Device mode. Kies tries to connect, then tells me to try again in Kies mode. I do so. Nothing happens.
After some googling, I try with the external SD card unmounted, as that seems to be recommended. No difference.
I told Kies to reinstall the device drivers. No difference.
I've rebooted Tab and PC. No difference.
What am I doing wrong? Can someone who uses his Tab with Windows maybe post a step-by-step howto?
I'm interested in this too as I'm having the exact same problem. If I connect as a mass storage device, I get an error that it needs to be in Kies mode. If I connect in Kies mode, Kies sees the device and shows the status as "connecting" but never actually connects. On the Tab, it says that it's connected though. I've tried this on Win XP and Win 7. Same behavior both times.
Interesting, you're already a step ahead on me. I don't get anything in Kies Mode, no connecting, nothing. I've tried on a 64bit Vista system and a 32Bit Win7 system, but no difference. In Kies mode, I don't even get the 'device plug in' sound in windows.
Care to tell me how you got Kies to at least see the Tab in Kies mode? What version of Kies are you using, etc.?
I'm using a rooted GSM (euro) Tab on Swisscom network and Kies V2.0.0.11014_49_2
I think I've cracked it. Firmware update is installing on my Tab as we speak.
What did I do? Seems really simple. I went to the Connections and Network Settings on the Tab, and in USB Connection Settings, I changed it from 'ask on connection' to 'samsung kies'. Upon plugging it in, it told me that it had to disable Bluetooth to enable the USB connection (never seen that screen before), so I allowed that, and windows immediately scrambled for device drivers and Kies show the connecting sign at the top left.
I'll keep you posted on how it went.
UPDATE: The installation process ran through, and Kies instructed me to disconnect and reboot my Tab. I did. However, it nows hangs during the boot sequence, at the stage where the blue 'SAMSUNG' logo is shown. From time to time, the Tab vibrates like it does when an application force closes, but it doesn't seem to finish booting. I fear I may have bricked my Tab. Trying to go through the recovery menu now.
Ok, factory reset from the recovery menu brought it back to life. No Gingerbread as of yet, but the XXJMF version of Froyo.

No, unfortunately not.
Back to the overall question - I had similar problems when I bought my Tab in the tail end of last year (Win7 64bit) and had to do some strange combination of attaching the Tab and starting Kies mode on the device before starting Kies on the PC (and dancing a jig while singing the Jingle Bells, you get the picture)
Today I installed the latest version of Kies and it all seems to just work. Therefore it might be worth updating your Kies version (or perhaps I'm just lucky this time through!)
I take it back, same old problem of never connecting unless I plug in the Tab before I start Kies on the PC, sorry for the noise!
I am having no luck whatsoever. I'm rooted if that makes any difference at all. My process has been going like this:
Plug Tab into computer. Wait until I see the screen that says Kies is connected.
Fire up Kies on my computer. Under Connected devices I see "connecting."
That is as far as I get. I never get further than that and I've tried it on Win7 (64 bit) and XP (32 bit) with the exact same results. I've re-installed the driver twice and rebooted both the Tab and the computer multiple times. Kies tells me it's the latest version so that's not an issue. Supposedly there is a Froyo update out there that fixes the screen orientation issue, but I can't get it. Frustrating. This should not be that hard. The fact that there are this many people all having the same issue just proves how half-baked this software is IMO.
Did you try without the SDcard? Seems Kies doesn't play nicely with external SD.

Seemed to make no difference at all on the Win 7 machine or the XP machine. Goes to connecting and never actually connects. My Tab says it's connected. Kies never does connect on my Win 7 (64 bit) or on XP (32 bit). Frustrating to know that there is an update available that fixes issues I'm having, but I can't get it.
I've just got this problem too.
My solution: set the usb connect type in your tab to "kies" from "ask when connected". It solved my problem.
Sorry for my english.
[edit] Well, I read the whole thread and realised you found the same slution. Nevermind, at least I tried to help.

I tried that, but it didn't work for me.
I have factory reset and unrooted.
Removed the micro-SD card.
Changed to "ask when connected."
Nothing works. Same behavior. Kies says "connecting", but never connects.
I finally got my problem fixed. I had to take a 3rd computer, install Kies, reboot, plug in the Tab, wait for all the drivers to install except for the drive for the MTP device (this wouldn't install). Then I had to have it re-install the drivers, unplug the Tab and reboot it, then plug it in again. The thing finally connected and I was able to sync. Then it displayed a message that the firmware cannot be updated. Not sure if that means cannot be updated at the moment or if that means cannot be updated ever. Seems like a ton of work for nothing.
Update: just noticed that after the mentioned update, all the APN entries were gone. Had to set them up again by hand. No big issue, but annoying. I hadn't noticed until this morning, because I was on Wifi all weekend
I just got my AT&T Galaxy Tab and when I try to connect to Kies I get the message "This device is not supported by Kies 2.0." I checked for updates but it says it is the latest version. Anyone have any ideas?
I know this isn't helpful but KIES is very Flaky. I've never managed to get it working 100%. "Ask for connection type' almost always doesn't work. It's not worth the trouble as it's a completely USELESS app anyway.
For those who don't want to download the ADB drivers separately it's good for that then once the drivers are installed just uninstall and move on

I don't bother with Samsung provided updates. Just get my ROMS from right here and use ODIN Thanks to the wonderful devs (Ocome) on this site.
PS: Even if you want a stock GB ROM you can get it from here. No need for Kies.

Me Too
Hi
Just a 'me too' post i'm afraid. I get the GT saying 'connected' in the MTP app, while Kies says 'Connecting....' forever more. Its REALLY anoying.
I am not interested in any non official roms (wasted far too much time on them on my various WinMo phones). I do want to be able to install an official Gingerbread update though.
My tab used to connect to Kies. It stopped connecting right after it installed an update (to FROYO.XYJJ3), and I have never managed to get it to connect since. I think Kies has a bug (one of many!) which means it will not recognise the current rom on my Tab.
I have tried:
- Removing SD card
- USB debug on/off
- USB connection set to Kies/Choose on Connect
- Reset tab to factory default
- Connect tab then start kies
- Start kies then connect tab
- BT On/OFF
- Wifi On/OFF
- Sim card out
- flight mode enabled
- packet data on/off
- Install kies onto 2 other completely fresh PC's Win7X64 and XP
Nothing has worked, says 'Connecting' but never connects. I'm about ready to just ebay the pile of junk and move on!
Kies version: 2.0.0.11014_49
Tab Build No: FROYO.XWJJ3
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Baseband: P1000XXJID
Tab version 3G+Wifi
Firmware Version: 2.2
Model No: GT-P1000
Been onto Samsung tech, but they are ruddy useless - no help what-so-ever (not that I expected then to be). How Samsung ever expects to compete with apple when their software is even worse than ruddy iTunes I just dont know.
Nigel
you have to switch to kies mode in the wireless/usb settings. Then before you connect the tab to usb make sure you on your home screen, else Kies mode will never start up. You can start up kies on the pc before or after you connect the tab doesnt matter. If the kies software never starts up at this point, uninstall, make sure the drivers have been uninstalled as well, reboot, reinstall kies. Start kies before you connect the tab as it may have to install updates, then connect the tab in kies mode. Ive used kies mini and regular kies with this method, works. As a side note, the full version of kies will not work with Stock US roms, it will always say phone not supported, so you have to use Kies mini.
Although I don't think i would rely on Kies to do a firmware update....if at all or successfully.
I turned off usb debugging, but the mass storage I can't turn off: I have to choose between MTP and PTP.
I upgraded Kies to the latsest version, unfortunately no connection.
I tried Kies via Wifi and it works, fine for me.
BUT I prefer Kies via USB. Is there anybody else with the same problem and can help me?
Neither works for me.
Waiting for solution.

Were you able to connect to Kies? I can't. I am not talking about USB mass storage mode, but I want to connect PC Kies with my phone and ever since LPY upgrade I can't. I have stock rom, no root and CWM or anything like that. The PC finds the device GT-N7000, and it works fine in explorer, but Kies can not connect to the phone. It stays in connecting and then it says that there was an error connecting to the device.
Anyone else with LPY that can not connect to Kies for PC?

I responded to an other thread here which has a similar situation as you have...
anyway, what you should do is completely uninstall kies.. when I say completely, I mean removing it thru the registries (of your computer), folders in Program files or Program files x 86... After removing it, reinstall it again, uncheck and recheck usb debugging in your Phone's settings.
Check if Kies will recognize your phone after... It may take a bit while.. but it will I'm sure, also unplug and re-plug your USB cable to different usb ports on your computer and check which one will automatically connect and detect with your phone.
If your using a PC, it's advisable you plug your phone at the back of your PC (where I think there's a USB port in there), it gives a much stronger signal than the one at the front of your tower or desktop.
Hope this helps...

This is partially a Windows support issue, but hopefully someone here has had a similar experience or at least got some good ideas how i can troubleshoot this...
When i plug my Note on my machine if i got USB debugging enabled, Windows starts installing the drivers, but then the device installation thingy freezes (i've tried both just letting it do it's thing automaticly and the add hardware thingy from the control panel, same results), i can't even start the add hardware thingy afterwards (it complains some hardware is still being installed and it can't install more than one at once), Windows won't shutdown afterwards; and if it is plugged with the computer off or remains plugged when rebooting Windows won't finish booting, even if i try to boot in safe mode (but if it isn't plugged while Windows loads the boot goes just fine).
The pc is running WinXP 32bits SP3 (in brazilian portuguese if that matters), and the Note still got the factory's Gingerbread UBKK3 (not rooted yet). Feel free to ask for any additional information you believe i can provide that could help you help me figure this out.
Any ideas how i can figure out what is going wrong here?
ps:before anyone suggests it, no, reformatting the PC is not somthing i'd be willing to consider at the moment; and unless there is no drivers avaiable for WinXP i definitly don't wanna downgrade to 7, much less Vista.

If Kies is installed and up to date then you don't need any further drivers.
Might be worth un installing Kies and samsung usb drivers, reboot, download Kies again and install, reboot. Make sure you're connecting the phone in the rear (motherboard) usb ports and see how it works from there.
Is it just the phone that causes this issue, or other usb devices also?

I already tried uninstalling and reinstaling Kies as well as the "devices" that get installed when i plug the note; things still go screwy if i try plugging my Note with USB debugging mode activated.
Perhaps i'm not explaining this right. What i call "installing drivers" is what windows does when you plug a new device; i'm not talking about just having the files avaiable, but actually setting things up to use the device.
Btw, it seems Windows doesn't recognize the Note as the same device with and without the USB debug mode, it installs more than one of some of the "virtual" devices; i noticed it 'cause it installs a "Samsung Mobile USB Modem #2" after i try to plug the device both with the USB debug mode disabled, and with it enabled (had to do that trick to show unplugged devices to actually see both the plain USB Modem and the USB Modem #2 at the same time, but the fact there was a #2 being installed clued me it had another one it still counted as being present)
A small update: I might've found a lead on what is going on; according to Wikipedia
Noting that the latest (as of 2012/09/02) driver version Samsung Android ADB driver 2.9.503.726 is broken (blue screen), and once installed fails to recognise Samsung devices ('Manufacturer Hardware ID missing'). This is supplied as part of Kies.

I don't get BSOD's, but that is precisely the version of the ADB driver that gets installed for me.
Nope, that wasn't it
I tried the drivers from that blog, and even though they are a different version things still go bad if i plug the Note in USB debug mode

I can't say exactly what the problem is, but had you seen that Gingerbread has USB options in 3 different places in the Settings menus?
- Location and Security, Disable USB debugging mode;
- Applications , USB Debugging;
- Wireless and network, USB utilities, Connect storage to PC (button).
I found you have to play around with those to get the connection working properly. I also found it's not a good idea to try to use Kies and Samsung drivers together on one PC. There's quite a lot about these issues on this thread and links therefrom. Hope this helps.
i got an issue regarding Usb mode too @@
recently i upgrade Note to blackCNA v2.1 and i can't "turn on usb" neither "turn off usb". when i stick Note to the computer, it's showed as "portable media player".
i've tried installing and uninstalling then reinstalling everything, from Kies to samsung usb driver, then reboot, then do it in another laptops, but it doesn't work @@
what can i do to fix it now @@

Do i need to uninstall Kies, or just kill all Kies* processes before plugging it in? (i think i already tried both, i'm not gonna try again unnecessarily 'cause when it freezes the driver installation thingy, Windows won't shutdown (it freezes after a while before finishing the process) and i'm forced to go for the physical power switch; i already had some bad experiences with HDDs developing an increased amount of bad blocks during similar circumstances in the past so i don't feel quite comfortable having to cut the power before the OS says it is ok if i have a choice)
Whether you use Kies or Samsung drivers really depends on what you want to do with your device. Kies lets you synchronise your contacts, agenda, etc. with Outlook on your computer. On the other hand if you are going to work on your device's software (rooting, flashing, modifying, (de-)odexing or even just transferring files) then you're better off with Samsung drivers. See this post for a download link. If you read the posts around this one, you will see how Chasmodo stresses the importance of completely getting rid of Kies before installing the Samsung drivers.
I would recommend you completely clean your PC of all drivers, Kies or Samsung drivers (software and registry) with your Note completely disconnected from it. There should be no yellow-triangle devices or anything like that in your PC device list, and your PC should be rebooting normally again. Next install either Samsung drivers or Kies, depending on what you want to do, with the Note still not connected and only when they're comfortably installed and your PC is still working and rebooting properly, reconnect your Note and let the PC detect and finish the installation.
Kies in particular is quite temperamental so it may take a bit of playing around before everything is set up for a sync if that's what you want to do.
I get this error message when connecting via USB that the phone is not supported by Kies 2.0 and the phone is brand new and completely stock. Should I return it?
Can you see the phone in your windows explorer or similar, the phone and SD card storage?
If no, then it is more likely a driver issue. Download and install the S3 Toolkit from here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979290 and follow the instructions to install the drivers. If all goes well then there is no issue with the phone. Not used Kies but if the drivers install properly then you shoudl be able to see it in Kies.
In all honesty, I would not bother with Kies. The way to go is once you root (if you inted to) is to just do nandroid backups to your microsdcard. That way if anything happens when away from your computer you can easily rectify it.
If you decide not to use Kies then remember to remove it from your computer before using S3 Toolkit as it can cause conflicts.
Kies and the drivers work just fine with my i9300. And I can read and write internal and external. And Odin works perfect...
So why not Kies? Even tried reinstalling and a clean Windows 7 install with only Kies installed. And my i9300 worked just fine on all the others but not my i9305.

Are you saying that the I9305 is picked up by odin and you can see the phone in Windows or are you referring to the 9300?
Have you tried the drivers from S3 Toolkit? I do not have kies here and it is removed from my phone so cannot test it. Actually, what rom are you running? Perhaps the rom has the Kies stuff removed?
Have you enabled USB Debugging?
I'm saying that it all works just not Kies with my I9305. Everything else is working 100% and I've tried USB debugging on and off. Even considered flashing another firmware but can't find a NEE or the TLA my phone came with.
Ah ok, well in that case I cannot see there being an issue with the phone at all. Just a Kies issue somewhere or possibly an issue with the rom but still do not think it justifies getting it replaced as you know the USB interface works.
I've emailed Samsung last night.let's see what they say...
Swyped on my GT-I9305.
Got the phone exchanged and it's working fine now.

I got the same problem with a new Samsung Galaxy S III 4G (GT-I9305)... do i have to return it and get another one ?
I had to, mine had an error. But yours might not have the same error, have you tried uninstalling KIES, deleting the Samsung folder in documents and then reinstall?

Yep, i just installed win 7 x64, then installed KIES, did the update, connected the phone to pc via usb cable and i get a driver error message. "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" shows with ! in device manager.
I have uninstalled KIES, cleaned up the PC with ccleaner, installed: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1590.
Reboot PC and phone, no luck.
Then tried to point them manually from C:\Program Files (x86)\Samsung\USB Drivers and C:\Program Files\SAMSUNG\USB Drivers still no luck.
I downloaded KIES from Samsung website under the phone software section and still nothing.
After uninstall delete Samsung folder in documents.
Swyped on my GT-I9305.
I had an i9305 international for 2 weeks and Kies said phone not supported, I sold it due to cell coverage issues in my area. Now I have an i9300 International and again Kies will not work with it. Is there a different version of Kies for international phones? I am in the US.

Did that too.
Disconected every usb device i had plugged in, tried every usb port, and with debugging e/d ... it's driving me nuts.
Can it be a hardware problem ?
When i put it in download mode the pc detects it.
I have stock firmware XXALI5
SOLUTION to my problem:
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 2 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect

Was just about to ask if you had backed the IMEI and forgot to put it back, since I saw your picture and it said Qualcomm and not Samsung.
Tried reinstalling Kies and all, it did not work. Then called Samsung and they said that I need to send the phone to them for a software update. My old firmware was LI5 and the phone is stock.
What I did was, downloaded the latest carrier firmware from samfirmware and flashed it with Odin. Now no more problems with Kies and phone is not stated as modified. Still all original. Firmware now LI9.
Hope that helps
Saved me the hassle sending the phone to Samsung.
