[Q] Nexus One Gingerbread 2.3.3 HOW TO ROOT? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just updated my Nexus to 2.3.3 and lost my root. I tried rageagainstthecage again, but it seems that particular exploit is now closed. In fact, when I ran it and adb reset, I could no longer USB debug on my phone until I restarted it.
So... How do we root the Nexus One with 2.3.3 ??
Thanks, Steve.

looking for similar thing too, i had rooted stock N1 2.2.1 then updated to 2.3.3 (CMW with custom ROM+rooted) works pretty cool, what i am wonder, what about if i flash not rooted version , what happen after that, do i lose? ability to root again? or i can just flash su?
thx

The inventor of rageagainsthecage has stated it no longer works on gingerbread. He has another exploit called gingerbreak which he will release when more devices get gingerbread or something. For now, downgrade and flash a pre-rooted gingerbread build. Good luck with that, I still can't seem to downgrade...

Are both you guys running an unlocked bootloader with custom recovery?
If so, then head over to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968396 and download the su.zip that's attached at the bottom of the first post.
Once downloaded, put it on your SD card, boot into recovery (hold volume down after you hit the power button, then select recovery form the menu with the volume down key and press the power button to confirm). Then, simply flash the su.zip from within recover.
**This all assumes you have a custom recovery image such as Amon RA.
I haven't come across a clear cut way to root GRI40 without the use of custom recovery.

You can find stock (FRG83G) rooted and unrooted images from dsixda here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=927935
This of course assumes you have custom recovery/unlocked bootloader.
If not, you can follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11618802&postcount=972

Not using a custom recovery so can't do the idea listed here. As for downgrading and then upgrading, it's probably the only solution but I think I'll wait for GINGERBREAK

thx, seems i will wait until GINGERBREAK
do i need to unlock to use custom recovery? i have stock version, dont wonna unlock it

You could follow the instructions in this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11626567&postcount=70 ) thread if you want root, but don't want to unlock bootloader.
More detailed info avaliable here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865

This has fastboot commands which means the bootloader has to be unlocked...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App

Code:
fastboot oem unlock

Having an unlocked bootloader since minute 5, I am guessing here.
But couldn't you downgrade with passimg and then reroot the same way you did previously, install CW recovery, and then upgrade to one of the rooted GRI40 builds?

You will have a padlock icon on your 'X' screen if you have unlocked the bootloader successfully. To check whether or not you have root access, open up a terminal from the phone and type su. If it asks for root access and you click allow, you should see a # sign. If it doesn't give you a # sign, you aren't rooted.

Thanks Brownbay this su.zip worked for me..
1. Had a rooted 2.2.2 before
2. Update to 2.3.3 and my root is gone
3. Tried manual rooting steps for Froyo didn't work out
4. Downloaded this su.zip file
5. In my 2.3.3 used Superboot to flash Amon RA recovery while I was in Fastboot(shutdown and then Trackball+power). For some reason wasnt able to flash when the phone is powered on and in normal working mode.
6. Select su.zip for update
7. Reboot after finish, Installed Titanium backup again and tested working fine...
Great now I will have all the fun again

Hi, this is interesting, could you please elaborate more on the above steps?

It's called "Install custom recovery, guide for unlocked bootloader", and then "flash a SU file through custom recovery".
Guides in Wiki.
People, have a look before asking!!

1. Download Superboot and extract to your system(mine c:\superboot)
2. Download Amon RA-Passion recovery image and place it in the superboot folder
3. Shutdown you phone, reboot pby pressing Trackball+Power button
4. In you computer open command prompt and gotto c:\superboot
5. Type "fastboot-youros flash recovery your-ra.img-filename"
6. It will upload and once said done disconnect you phone from computer
7. Select Bootloader and Recovery
8. Now select update zip and select the SU.zip and update

Have you guys tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736271
It worked on Eclair but probably not in GB.
I flashed an old Eclair rom, rooted, installed Rom Manager, Clockwork, and back to CM7.

call me a little crazy but I rooted last night using modaco's superboot. Yes, I know there is no version for GRI40 yet, but i just used the one for FRG83D. It hung on first boot and had to issue an adb reboot command to get it to boot, but everything seems fine after that. And it rooted successfully

Cannot get into recovery mode for backup after unlock and rooting

Hi I am a newbie here and I have a Nexus one.
After unlock and rooted, i tried to enter the recovery mode. But I encounter problem. I cannot get into the green recovery mode. Instead I got an exclamation mark (!) warning with a little android standing on side of the mark. Can anybody tell me what I did wrong?
Thank you,
Jack
Did you flash amon-RA-1.7.0 yet?
You didn't install a custom recovery image. See the rooting guide here and it tells you how to do that.
No.. I only unlocked and rooted.
But I am not sure if my phone is rooted because it doesn't indicate that the phone is rooted after i run the superboot.bat file. The command prompt only came up for a sec and then gone.
When I open my phone. It is just like a new Nexus One. Except for unlocked sign when I boot up.
Thanks for the help
Jack
It's unlocked, now flash the recovery image, back-up, then wipe and flash Rom.

7. Flash Amons RA Recovery Image from here
Hi, thanks for the tip
I was able to boot into the recovery image and do a back up from there.
Now I am trying to flash the image into my Nexus one. But when I type fastboot-windows flash ... it says unknown partition and cannot recognize the file name..
can you please help again? thanks.
The terminal method from the phone is probably easier for you to do.
Most likely you didn't cd to the correct directory where the file is from command prompt. Give us a picture of what you did and the error and the steps you took to get to the point you are at because the guide and programs work.
hi.. i spent a lot of time reading and trying.. finally this is what i did to make it work
Step 1. fastboot-windows boot recover image file <-- this is how to got into recovery mode and back up
Step 2. fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery.image.file.name <-- this replace my original recovery flash and the little annoy android man is gone
I did backup again after Step 2. By now I think I realize that Step 1 is the same as Step 2. But no harm backing up two times..
I then installed a new rom into my N1.. everything looks fine now.. i will go ahead and try out some features..
Thank you for all the advices

[Q] Broke my recovery image. :(

Hi there,
I've just installed CM 6.1.1 via Amon Ra's recovery. CyanogenMod is pretty damn good I must say. At any rate, I got interested in the ClockWork ROM manager app and decided to give it a try. Seemed to install OK from the first menu item but (foolishly foolish now it seems) I didn't do anything to remove Amon Ra's original recovery before installing via the menu.
At any rate, any of the options I choose from the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to require a reboot into the recovery don't work. "Reboot into recovery" and "backup current ROM" reboot and intitally give me the regular Nexus One splash (with unlock icon) then go to a black screen. I can still get to the regular bootloader screen by holding the trackball and pressing power but going to HBOOT gives me a blackscreen on reboot too.
I've given the forums a pretty good trawl but haven't found any answers so far. I wondered about flashing back to a stock bootloader but haven't found any instructions that don't also require flashing back to the stock ROM also.
Can anyone tell me how to flash the bootloader properly/fully (with ClockWork) given the fact that I appear to have broken it. Any help would be greatly appreciated - I really like the idea of being able to use the ClockWork ROM manager!
Use fastboot to flash an SLCD compatible recovery.
Blackscreen means that the SLCD driver is missing and cannot correctly display the recovery.
The compatible recoveries are Amon_ra 1.9 alpha and above and only the latest clockworkmod recovery (which is only available through a certain menu in the ROM Manager app)
Wrong forum bud but here you go:
1) Download this
2) Reboot to bootloader (Open up a cmd window in your sdk/tools/ folder and type 'adb reboot bootloader')
3) Copy recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.0-passion.img to the tools folder.
4) Verify fastboot recognises your device: 'fastboot devices'
5) Issue command 'fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.0-passion.img'
6) Finally reboot using 'fastboot reboot'
You should then be able to use ROM manager just fine
Edit: Or follow the above post using the Rom manager gui.
Wrong forum! Doh! Apologies. Just noticed I'm now listed below this thread: "Thread DELETED/Locked??? >>>> This is DEVELOPMENT section not Q&A/General!!!! <<<<" Hope I don't get whacked with the ban hammer.
Thanks for the amazingly fast replies guys. Tried flashing the clockwork .img file (not using adb but linux-fastboot seems to work OK on my Ubuntu install) and rebooted from the bootloader with the HBOOT - recovery option and tried fasboot-linux reboot from terminal. Still getting a black screen. Same with reinstalling Clockwork recovery from the GUI. Hmmmm.
Incidentally, is there anyway to tell from the bootloader screen what recovery flashes are installed?

Oh wait, your HBOOT is black or your recovery? Try a direct "reboot recovery" command from your terminal to see if the recovery now works...
If it's only the hboot, you should be able to flash the 0.35 hboot which supports SLCD
or fastboot oem rebootRUU - if your device's bootloader is unlocked, else be aware that any fastboot command will unlock it, even if you don't apply the oem unlock.
Only clockwork 2.5.1.1 and above, our Amon 1.9 and above is compatible.
Open ROM Manager, and flash a newer version. The option is under All Clockwork Recoveries, at the bottom of the initial page...

Utter crap.
Righto so I've already flashed to the latest version of clockwork (from the GUI) which is where things started getting funky. When I get back to my laptop ill try rebooting into recovery instead of using hboot. And perhaps try flashing to hboot 3.5 if you guys think this might help. I do still get a blackscreen from using the reboot into recovery option from theROM manager GUI.
EDIT: Oh cool. Just read your post more carefully danger-rat. Went to 2.5.1.1 of clockwork and I'm all sorted when booting into recovery from the GUI. Not sure about hboot but I guess if its working from the GUI its all good. ') Thanks for the help people.
EDIT EDIT: I really should try things before posting, anyways hboot works good too now! Niiiiice.

CWM is available to flash through Rom Manager

Rom Manager was just updated to version 5.0.2.4 and allows you to flash to CWM 6.0.1.6 recovery. Booting to recovery just gives me the Android with a red flag though. Just a FYI till it gets sorted.
Pressing and holding the pwr button will boot you back to the OS. Not a huge deal as we don't have anything to flash at the moment.
If you need to get back to the stock recovery in the meantime which can be found in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993331
Edit:
Don't Flash this yet, you'll have to re-install the stock recovery or wait for a fix and could possibly brick your phone if you don't know what you're doing.
Is there like an easy way to root other than manually adb pushing? Flashable zip maybe?
I get the same thing as you, says flash successful then the red flag.

You can use the temporary "boot" method as opposed to "flash" when using the current CWM recovery which is posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993331
Don't flash the recovery yet though, it's obviously not sorted. I used the adb method to root which worked fine. I got excited when I saw the new Rom Manager which allowed me to flash recovery because Koush's G+ messages earlier today.

You can access recovery by the following commands:
fastboot reboot recovery (when booted into the bootloader)
adb reboot recovery (when booted into the phone)
booting the device up while holding down the PWR + VOL DOWN will boot into bootloader, then choose recovery from the menu.
Unlocking your bootloader doesn't not automatically give you root in the ROM. it gives you the ability to flash a custom recovery(which you've done) and various other unsigned(aka non-HTC) files. To fully root your phone, there is another step you need to take in the All-In-One. The options on the lower right hand section called "Perm Root."
Alternatively, at this point, you could just install either A) pre-rooted stock ROM, or B) a fully custom ROM like TrickDroid or ARHD in the Android Development section of this forum. PLEASE NOTE: These ROMs are for the international/T-Mobile/AT&T model. If you have the Sprint model, DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING IN THIS SECTION and go to the Sprint-specific HTC One forums.

S-Off and root

I would like to root my phone and keep it stock as much as possible.
After reading, it seems that I could S-Off then root (I would like to avoid unlocking my phone with HTCDev). Now it seems that I need to flash a recovery to be able to root. Is it? Otherwise how could I do it without the recovery?
Thanks!

you can fastboot boot the recovery and then flash root. That way you stay stock while still having root.

Your information is a little off. Most root methods don't involve installing the su binary separately from your superuser app. You should also learn how to use fastboot, as suggested above.
You will need to have a recovery image (most people use TWRP), and a root zip (most people are using SuperSU's zips these days, you can find them in the root guides around this forum). Download the root zip to your phone before you do anything else.
You need to boot your phone into fastboot mode (restart the phone, then hold VOL UP/VOL DOWN and POWER), and then with the phone plugged into your computer, run:
fastboot boot /path/to/recovery.img
That will boot your phone once into a custom recovery. From here, depending on the recovery you're using (most will use TWRP), you can hit the appropriate install option, navigate to wherever you downloaded your root ZIP, and then flash that. Reboot the phone, and you'll be rooted, and the one-time recovery will be gone.
