Well, i've been looking at themes to put on my official 2.2 Captivate and they all are saying to create a NAND backup first before doing anything. So i did some research and from what I can tell, you do this with CWM. My phone is rooted. I downloaded ROM manager, i flashed it, then i go and click "Make backup", the phone reboots and the blue system recovery menu comes up(3e, i'm not sure if that makes a difference) and I click "reinstall packages". It goes through finding update package, opening, verifying, and then it says:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

I'm then right back at the recovery menu.
I'm not too sure what I should do from here.
Help would be great, thanks

It's because 2.2 uses 3e recovery which is not compatible with CWM. If you wish, you could theme 2.1 stock I guess, but a better solution is a custom ROM with themes

Alright. Thanks.
Is there currently a solution being worked on to make CWM work on 2.2? Or, is there another option to make a NAND backup on 2.2 other than CWM.
I'd rather not go back down to 2.1. I saw that some ROMs are already made for 2.2 like Cog 4 and Serendipity(But, you also should make a backup before flashing, lol. Which leads back into my earlier question in this post if there are any other solutions than CWM for 2.2). I probably will end up putting a custom ROM on my Captivate, but if it's just a matter of waiting a little while until development for 2.2 Captivate gets going, then i'll just wait.

Thanks for the advice. I found a link to this in the captivate dev forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Worked perfectly It's performing a backup as we speak.
I also have this problem in my SGS2.
I root it then downloaded ROM Manager pressed the Flash CWN recovery, chose the SGS2 option and then it automatically download CWN 4.0.1.5, then, after doing that, every time I try to reboot into Recovery it show my the signature fail error.
I got 2.3.3.

Got my Captivate a few weeks ago (best phone ive ever had) and i instantly Updated it to 2.2. The problem i have came across now is that i see terms such as "JK3" and "JPU" when i want to install a theme and i was wondering how do i know if i have that. I dont remember what i used to get 2.2. Also DL ROM manager, click install Clockworkmod Recovery but i dont know if i have it, how would i know. When i go into mass storage and all my folder show up it has a clockworkmod folder with a recovery-update.zip in it. Copied that .zip to main folder area and renamed it update, put phone in recovery mode and put reinstall packages but it says E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed when i rename it i dont put .zip......Baseband Version: I897UCJI6, Build Number: FROYO.UCJI6
stock 2.2 leaked ROM has 3e recovery. You need 2e recovery. Go back to stock 2.1 using ODIN.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
will it delete everything?
update:should of opened up link before replying haha will something like Lookout or Titanium backup pics etc.. so it wont be deleted?
It won't wipe your sd card. Your pics and media on the card/internal storage will be fine. You will lose your apps, you can use titanium to back those up.

I don't think there is a simple way at least. ODIN is as simple as it gets. Just backup your apps using Titanium then ODIN right away.

I just got my Galaxy S and want to update the ROM but dont know the exact process. Various Roms say to apply update.zip first but I keep getting e:signature verification failed so I cant proceed.
I tried update.zip for 'ClockworkMod' and it gave the same error.

You need to flash a kernel with clockwork mod recovery such as :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
Flash with Odin and put the kernel in the PDA section. Once flashed you will have clockwork mod recovery. The reason you can't apply roms is because you have Recovery 3e which won't apply unsigned .zips.
When booted into clockwork mod just select apply .zip from sd card and choose the ROM you want to install and then reboot.
Simple really
I sure hope you have checked first if your 3-button combo works. Otherwise you soon will be figuring out how to unbrick your Galaxy....

Hello,
ROM manager is not backing up my stock rogers rom 2.2 using Kies. Everytime I click on backup it'll reboot my phone and then take me to recovery screen.
When I get there i only see four options it doesn't even boot onto clockwork mod with all those options
Some applications sometimes don't even recognize that my device is rooted
I rooted it using superone click windows.
Frikking Titanium backup isn't working either what should i do ?
Please help me out with what could I be doing wrong ?
i believe its because of the 3e recovery used in the 2.2 rom i suggest trying to find the odin flashable version of voodoo, which will work

Ok so I'm new to flashing a ROM, and Im having a little problem with ROM Manager. Ive been trying to make a backup of my current ROM prior to flashing to a new ROM. However when I choose the option to backup current ROM it shows me the name of the backup and then reboots my device (Samsung Captivate) into recovery mode. Not really sure what it wants me to do there so I choose to reboot the device, I then check to see if it made the backup and nothing??? Im not sure what it is that Im doing wrong but Im sure I must be missing a step. The phone is rooted, running 2.2 other than that nothing else has been moded. If any of you can help me I would appreciate it, I just dont want to move forward with flashing a ROM before Ive backed up the current ROM. I have made a backup of all apps and data using Titanium.

When it goes into recovery, is it the ClockWorkMod recovery menu? Green text? If it isn't getting there you need to install it from ROM manager first or just install it off an update.zip file that is floating around XDA and other sites. Once that is setup, you can run the backup through ROM Manager. It should boot into a recovery mode and then start doing a lot of writing of files to your new backup directory.
Post back if you are still having problems.
I did select the option for flashing ClockWorkMod recovery and chose the Captivate as my device. It did say that it sucessfully downloaded the file and Im assuming that it meant it installed it. And to answer your question I think I can safely say that no its not clockwork recovery when it reboots as it does say at the top of the screen "Android Recovery" so Im pretty sure that ClockWork is not installed. But I will look for that update.zip file and try to install it that way...

I'm sorry, you are looking for recovery-update.zip. I would try to run the ROM Manager install again and see what happens. I haven't had to play with the Android Recovery in quite some time but if the recovery-update.zip file is in the root of your sd card, you should be able to install it through the Android recovery. I'll keep looking. If I can find the file on my phone, i'll post it. Good luck.
If this is your first time booting into CWM recovery it will go to the base recovery first. Then you need to "reinstall packages". That will replace the recovery file with the CWM recovery file and return to the main menu. Then choose reintall packages one more time and it should bring you to CWM recovery instead of the base one. From then on it should bring you directly to the CWM recovery.
As for the backup it's done from CWM recovery. So once you get thru the steps above you will see backup and restore options on the recovery menu and you can go thru that process.
There may be some help in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163
First try to flash it again through ROM Manager.

That update.zip should have been placed there by ROM Manager. Possibly try uninstalling & reinstalling ROM manager. Else, that update.zip should be somewhere. I'd grab the one off my phone but I'm not entirely sure which one it is. My ROM already had CWM with it. I'll try to look for a correct update.zip but I'm at work so I'm not going through XDA all day.

I missed it too. The above post regarding 3e recovery is what you need to do, one of the phones I have I need to do the same process after flashing back to stock. Sorry for the confusion.
Been having a similar issue when it takes you to stock recovery, I hold down both volume buttons and power until I see AT&T let go of power it usually takes me to clockwork recovery menu, I then select whatever I want to do backup, recover, or install from sd.
I don't know why it started doing that but that's what I found works. Hope it helps.

Hi, I am a new user on the xda forums (although I have read countless threads). I am a little confused as to what I should do with my captivate. I am debating between flashing 2.3 (to which I see only one drawback: there are not many stable roms out there and flashing them can be a struggle as my recovery image is not very functional in 2.3), or sticking to 2.2 and finding a nice rom that I enjoy (only drawback: it's 2.2 and not 2.3! ) So can anyone advise what to do? Thanks in advance!
My opinion: If you're new to flashing, flash a 2.2 rom. There's less chance of things going truly wrong (less true brick chances). Then, once you feel comfortable flashing (and know a little more), make the jump to 2.3.
I'd say go with 2.2, unless you are feeling brave. CM7 and MIUI (both 2.3) have pretty short battery life. Some people talk about having good battery life, but I think those people are in the minority.
thanks for the quick responses. Well I have flashed roms before (not really new to it), it's just that I haven't done it through the clockwork mod recovery because I am not able perform functions in recovery mode when running 2.3 (which is what I am currently running). Is there a stable 2.3 recovery image for the captivate out there? (none of the options in rom manager seem to work for me...) Have others been able to successfully use rom manager on a Captivate running 2.3?? If so, could someone please provide detailed instructions on how to do so?
What are you NOT able to do in recovery mode for 2.3 that you CAN do in 2.2? I mean I have been from 2.1>2.2> 2.3.4>2.3.3>2.3.4 via clockworkmod without any issues.
What exactly are you trying/wanting to do? If you are just trying to change roms? A little more info might be helpful.

well yea basically I can't use rom manager to flash a clockwork mod recovery that is functional on my captivate. This hampers me from flashing roms through recovery. Could someone just walk me through the installation of rom manager on a 2.3 stock captivate and then the flshing of a recovery image (chosing the proper model etc.)? (I think the issue may have something to do with unsigned packages or something like that?)

you have some reading to do.
pick a rom that you want, flash it
2.2 and 2.3 will come with android recovery 3e. to get around signature verification error, you need to replace the recovery as you indicated
if you are flashing from 2.1/2.2 to 2.3 (excluding CM7 and MIUI) you will be required to flash bootloaders first before you can flash the 2.3 rom
aside from going from 2.1/2.2 to 2.3, there is no reason to flash bootloaders....
if you stick with 2.2 roms, as long as you take care of the 3e recovery, you use CWM....always
if you go to 2.3 roms, flash the bootloaders ONE TIME, then you can flash as often as you want,

Ohhhh I see.... I don't think I clarified this, but I am currently on stock 2.3 using this method mentioined by: nakedninja42
I personally always remove my external memory and sim card before using odin. It is not needed as people will post but neither is doing master clear. I do these steps just to make sure I eliminate any possible issues that can occur during flashing.
1) Download Firmware from http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm
2) Flash back to stock JF6 w/ odin one-click and did a master clear.
3) Flash Gingerbread KF1 using Odin (see image in post link for reference) http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...9&postcount=75
4) Flash fugu kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1010141 Look for the step two that says download odin or heimdall, select the ODIN (well the version your going to use).
5) Flash stock kernel (see post link) credit to lownox for helping me on that http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=116
6) Settings>Applications> enable Unknown Sources (AT&T finally got something right)
7) Install busybox from market
8) ENJOY!

if you are already on 2.3, then you already have the bootloaders. you dont need to do anything with odin or bootloaders to get a new rom on. bypass 3e recovery and use CWM... NOT ROM MANAGER, to flash your rom

Sorry to sound extremely noobish... but I thought cwm was through rom-manager?? How do I go about flashing solely through cwm?
on the samsung galaxy s line, cwm is an update.zip file. all rom manager does is put an update.zip of itself on the /sdcard/
you dont need rom manager, just that update.zip. if you have bypassed 3e recovery, it will work.

no. any time you use 'official' firmware and not a custom rom, you will get 3e recovery back to defaults. you will need to bypass it again
