A couple noob questions - Nook Color General

I'm running froyo off sd, with the 1.0.1 rooted stock, updating the stock would have no effect on how the SD OS would run right?

The answer is no. No worry.

[Q] Stock setup ques

Ill make this quick
I just fully restored my NC after months of using because I corrupted my boot file. Anyways. Its been awhile since I rooted back in november, so my question is,
What are things nowadays to be done with a stock 1.01 NC?
Thanks
If you want to stick with 2.1. Autonooter and overclock is pretty much all you can do
Nook Color via Xda App
Or Autonooter 3.0 from Dev forums for latest Stock.

Root and Flashing.... need help please!

My girlfriend has the Captivate but is annoyed with how it runs. Buggy, laggy, battery etc. I told her she has 2 options, either get the official 2.2 update or have me put in Serendipity 6.3 for her. Problem she wants Serendipity but for whatever reason, she doesn't want me to root her... smh! Does an android phone need to be rooted in order to be flashed?

It doesn't HAVE to be rooted, you can just put the clockwork recovery update.zip on sd card, reinstall packages twice and flash the rom
That being said...you would need to root before flashing to use titanium backup to backup all her stuffs. Also any custom rom will be rooted after the flash.
If she doesn't want root at all seems like shes going with the official update...
Thanks a million! Appreciate it!

Remember to laugh at her when she decides she hates stock and doesn't mind rooting to get serendipity.
If she thinks 2.1 is laggy and buggy, her updating to 2.2 will be just the ticket you need for a green light on root and new rom.

Please do a search next time as these issues are well covered in here.

Please help this dummy.

I got nookie froyo on my NC but am having a hell of a time getting cm7 on it. I know its easy as hell and its in front of my face but this NC talk is sometimes Chinese to me. I've tried Rom manager and downloaded cm7 and Gapps, hit clear data, delvic, backup current Rom.... it just reboots nookie froyo and doesn't backup or flash. If anyone could point me in the right direction to the easiest way to flash cm7 that would be a huge help to me. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. But I'm rooted and flashed cwm via Rom manager.... but when I try to go into recovery it just reboots nookie froyo. Maybe I need to wipe my card and do a fresh cwm flash via SD and boot up?

Then if I take my SD card out and reboot it, it goes to stock rooted 1.0. Without my SD nookie froyo wont stay until I put SD back in and reboot. I have all day off tomorrow (I own a restaurant and work 6 days a week) and will really get a chance to play with it and hopefully conquer it. Also how do I get into recovery? On the Evo its volume down and power.

I guess I need more info on what exactly you are trying to do....
Are you trying to install CM7 to your EMMC (internal memory) or do you only want to use CM7 on your SD card and boot to it when you want (keeping stock or something else as your EMMC)?
Some folks out there like to have the best of both worlds...keep stock on their internal memory and use their NC as it was intended by B&N, as an e-reader. Others (present company incuded) install CM7 to their internal memory and that is all I use on a daily basis.
Let me know which path you are aiming for and I will see if I can be of any help. Looks like you have been around the forums for awhile, so sorry if I am asking basic questions, I just don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. Thanks.
Cm7 on a daily basis. I have an ipad for an ereader (bout all its good for lol). I have cm7 on my Evo and nook world is much different.

I appreciate you taking time to answer my dopey questions. Over on the Evo forums I actually help people..... over here I'm a fish out of water (but I love the nook)

Have you run through this setup procedure?

checking it now. Thanks
Thank you so much Paul! I'm typing this from my cm7 nook! I am very familiar with cwm and getting used to the tablet. Thanks again.

Yes, I suggest you find a guide that one of your modorators has put their time into to help people like you. Please next time look a little harder and read.

Of course. Rooting is the first step to make any modifications to your phone. What stock version are you currently on?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
I can't say you need to be rooted, but it is needed for certain backup utilities like Titanium Backup. Otherwise, all you need is CWM

I suppose I misspoke. Root is not required, but is greatly helpful, and I'd suggest obtaining it first.

I would say , root is highly recommended. But I think I seen a tutorial somewhere about flashing clockworkmod recovery on a stock unrooted captivate, or flashing a modded 3e Recovery to flash unsigned zip packages. I will try to find the link for you. But to backup all your apps and data, you will need root.

There are methods to root gingerbread, but they tend to be more involved then earlier versions of android. I correct my earlier statement that root is necessary. I'd highly suggest it if you want to back up apps etc, but it isn't required. I'd suggest downgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 and use the superoneclick utility. Supposedly this tool works on gingerbread but I haven't had any luck with it.

The easiest way is probably to flash Corn kernel, because you get the option to root in CWM. And you will have corn kernel, so it will also be easy to flash from there
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
If you want to flash a custom roms, flash back to stock, then flash a custom kernel via Odin, reboot to system, put the rom on root of sd card, reboot to cwm, do a nandroid backup, wipe data/factory reset, then flash zip from sd card. That's the basic of flashing. Search around in the captivate section and you will find your answers. There are so many topics about flashing roms. Most of the time the rom dev, posts detailed instructions on flashing his/hers rom from start to finish.
Almost every custom rom comes pre-rooted. No need to root once you flash the custom rom.
Also, if you want to save your contacts, you should do so before you flash back to stock, or before you flash the custom rom. If you want to backup all of your apps, then you will need to be rooted, and have titanium backup installed from the market.

[Q] Will it ever be or is it possible to flash an ICS ROM with Safestrap?

Sorry if this question had been answered somewhere else and I didn't find it. I'm on Safestrap running eclipse 3.0. My stock "unsafe" partition is OTA'd .905. I'd like to wait for OTA ICS update but not sure if that's going to happen soon or at all. Don't really want to mess with my stock partition. Is it possible to dual boot ICS with Safestrap and leave my.905 partition alone? Please explain.

After unclogging the toilet that is my brain, I realized that the stock system has to be the same or newer. Funny thing because I just replied to a post that addressed a similar issue. Anybody have a plunger handyThanks to everyone who considered replying to this stupid question
