Can I overclock my captivate without loosing any data on my phone?

Questions go in Q&A.
Please post questions in the q/a section or in the thread that you are refering to.
But to answer yes, flashing a kernel has no effect on data but if you have any sort of lagfix you may want to disable it just incase. Setirons froyo kernel has a universal lagfix and is supposed to work over other lagfixes of various types. The lagfix is managed in recovery mode which has been replaced with clockworkmod recovery.
For eclair roms unhelpful has a great kernel but a froyo stock kernel is just as fast in most areas. Also unhelpfuls kernel was not set to overclock by default. But you could set the gpu speed as well. The customizable clocks and volt started on version 1.4.1 version 1.7 was the latest and has voodoo lagfix.

By any chance you can post a link to that thread, where I can download overclocked kernel? I tried to search all evening yesterday, and wasn't sure which one is exactly for my phone.
Thank you, and sorry for posting in the wrong section...

Read the whole first post, especially the part about the modems.bin files. The 1.2 versions are considered more well tested, I'm not sure of the differences.
I odin flashed the kernel and did not change the modem.bin and people were complaining about poor audio quality in phone calls and my battery was draining, if you just flash the jpp modem.bin then you might not have the 850 mhz band so our may effect phone signal in some areas. There are instructions to get 850 mhz but it requires flashing to stock.
I just used Autonooter 3.0 on my Nook Color. I installed SetCPU but it will not give me the option to overclock it past 800mHz. What gives?

You need to install an overclock kernel specific to your os. Stock os is Eclair. I like Dalingrin's kernel. Look in the dev forum to find it.
Have you flashed an overclock kernel like screamer or dalingrin's?
No. I tried that. The stock kernel supports only 800 MHz. You need to flash supported kernel to do that.
Search in development threads. i do not have enough posts to put links.

The hard reset process was used to return the internal memory to stock (oddly, the Android Market app and others still appear in extras) and now boot into CM7 from my SD Card. Why can I only overclock to 950? Is there a way to still overclock to 1100?
Thank you XDA Developers for this board. It's great!
CM7 Kernel allow OC to 925 max. You need to install one of the Dal' Oc Kernels.
Flash one of dalingrins OC kernels for CM7. Newest stable is 04/04. Newest test is under Test Builds and 4/24 OC's to 1.3GHz max.
Still kind of getting use to the teminology. How do I flash a kernel? Where would I find Test Builds? Are there more detailed instructions for what I'm trying to do? Remember, I'd like to leave the stock software in tact and work from the SD Card.
Thanks for your patience with me.
I'm good. Thanks everyone!
Can I overclock CM7 to 1.2 GHz using the stock kernel?
stickies exist for a reason, use them http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982776
No you cannot over clock CM7 without flashing a different kernel. Oh and you should post questions like this in the Cyanogenmod Q&A Sticky
I have an AT&T Samsung Captivate with Serendipity+Redrom installed. I want to use a custom kernel for overclocking to 1.2GHz. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746343). I have tried flashing this with Odin before installing Serenpity and it works but then Serendipity gets rid of it. If I install serendipity first then the phone does not even boot ofter flashing the kernel with Odin. Does anyone know how to get Serendipity to work with the 1.2GHz overclock?
When you flash Serendipity that replaces any kernel you had with the one that comes with the ROM. Have you tried flashing a kernel from CWM.. one that works with serendipity and is OC capable?
no such kernel
I have looked and this is the only overclocked kernel that I can find. If there is a kernel that can use CWM I cant find it.
ohh.. i did not know that. Have you tried asking the mikeymike if there is an OC kernel that works with his ROM?
dont know how
Sorry I'm kind of a noob when it comes to stuff like this but I have no idea how to contact Mikeymike01, I don't see any contact info on the serendipity website.
here on XDA.. Go to the Serendipity thread and just ask in the thread. You may even get some help on installing the kernel you are trying to use.
your link is for 2.1 Eclair, and will not work on Serendipity.....i dont understand how you cant find an overclock kernel in the sea of kernels in the dev section....i mean, the titles of the threads start with [KERNEL]
