Starting fresh on my spare laptop. Anyone have any preferences between Debian or Ubuntu? I can't decide.
Also, as far as developing is concerned, is linux just linux or will one distro be better than the other?

Ubuntu is for the easy Linux user, but also good for laptops. I say go the osx86 route, I've got Snow Leopard running Vanilla on my laptop.
yeah I've been using ubuntu for a while I was thinking about switching it up to debian, but theres no real reason. osx86 I tried that along time ago and it didnt install so i gave up, i didnt really want it anyhow, it's not very friendly for me i suppose i like having full control over it i guess. maybe I'll try it. lol i have an xp laptop, win7 laptop, ubuntu desktop, and xp desktop. the extra one i moved from xp to 7 but im going to move it to linux.
Osx86 has grown fast, to the point where it's just a couple of steps to install.
1.Get a boot CD
2.Grab a retail Snow Leopard distro(Doesn't have to be store bought if you get my drift...)
3.Install!
4.DSDT auto patcher
You're done!
Nawcom boot CD that auto detects your hardware and if you are capable of using vanilla or not(Basically Core, Core 2, i3, i5, i7 cpus can use vanilla). Doesn't patch your dsdt automatically though.
http://blog.nawcom.com/?p=446
DSDT auto patcher! You can generate your DSDT if it's available, or just create a generic one!

I'm running 10.6.3 on a 4 year old Celeron M laptop. And I'm sure I had vanilla running at one point.

Netburst might be able to run Vanilla, I'm not sure. Try out Legacy or Modbin for sleep.
Linux Mint is the way to go man! It's like Ubuntu just with lots and lots of improvements. The speed is also better I was amazed when I went from Ubuntu to Mint 10. It's just better
For the most "painless" version def get Ubuntu. But it is rather bloated - though easily remedied.
I like Debian a lot too - but it's not as simple as Ubuntu's stick the disc in and forget it. Also I love the updater - I have a "glorified phone charger" netbook that I keep updated and it runs pretty snappy considering the hardware is dog slow.
Ubuntu 10.10 hands down, netbook remix is nice, desktop version would also work fine on your lappy.

I installed ubuntu 10.10 but it bores me. I was thinking mint debian edition. But I may just go straight debian with gnome. I know my way around linux so troubleshooting issues when they come up isnt a problem. I have a virtual debian command line only server to stream my music through http runs well enough. Never really played with gentoo. lol I really think the real difference between linux is their GUI.
How about this, whoever can come up with the most rediculous/funniest reason why I should install it. I will install your suggested operating system...... GO!!!

I'm trying to setup a dualboot with snowleopard and windows7 ultimate on my dell laptop.... I can get both leopard and snow leopard running and nearly fully functional (playing with kexts) and have even gotten the dualboot with leopard and 7 working fine....
but when i install snow leopard it makes me completely wipe and repartition with the GUID table and nor MBR... Leopard ran fine on MBR most likely because it was homebrew, not a retail img. The snow leopard I'm installing is a retail 10.6.3 and makes me use GUID... but when I go to install 7, it makes me do the same thing... completely wipe and repartition with MBR.... anyway around this? other than vmware? i want to run them natively.
thanks

I've got it working now...
I was trying to use EasyBCD 2.0.2 for the dualboot but it seems that it doesn't have an option for 'Generic x86' when adding the entry... I had to hunt down an older version...

Bin here, tired it.. and the final conclusion is, it takes piss ages to get reverything to work, or you get a rpolem, or a an update corrupts and crashes the install...
However, u've got Leoharzrd 10.6.2 to run inside of virtual box, fully working and wfine =]
btw, whats makes the dell and whats teh system specs ? =]

It's an Inspiron 1545... Virtually the same as getting the 1525 working with Snow Leopard... I only had to get the sound and native resolution working. The sleep is a bit more difficult to make work, and havent worked on it yet...
I used a retail 10.6.3 to start with. Used it to create two partitions with GUID table.... Used the boot123 method to install 10.6.3 retail, got Chameleon installed and working, then updated to 10.6.6, then got sound and display working. Then I installed windows 7 ultimate, and used an older version of UltraBCD for the dualboot... 1.6.2 i think... Once I learned what needed to be done, it was relatively simple... native display, and realizing newer versions of ultrabcd dont work is what held me up...

ahh it makes it a lot easier if you use a special "flavour" of mac osx...
i used Iatkos S3 snow leopard, makes things a lot easier, sleep sound and display out of the box
EDIT: btw i bought a retail snow leopard disc for my imac, so i believe the Iatkos disc is not illegal, as i have bought a proper disc...

Do you have the problem with windows having a completely incorrect time and date when going back from osx? gonna try the iatkos s3, would love an easy fix for sleep... does it still update properly, or have to manually update?

Yeah, i get the time problem... but i only use osx for ilife, so its not really a problem as i rarely use it.
I believe it still updates automatically through iatkos themselves but i am not sure...
After looking around on other devices and prevoiusly owning a htc touch pro 2 and porting ubutnu on it, I have decided that this summer (I finish uni in 3 weeks) I would try putting it on the p990. At first i was going to do it by vnc however i saw this yesterday
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045910
Considering the superior specs of our device and the possibilty of hdmi out
Is anyone else interested in trying to make this possible? If so I thought I would get the thread going, the more people developing the better
I have been requesting this myself, so if this is made possible, I'd be a very happy man!
i would be very happy to help you in any way.
it was my dream to run a full linux on this phone (either meego or fedora).
i'm a heavy linux-user, but a noobie when it comes to android.
+1 On this. Does anyone know if there are people working on this?
instead of going for Native boot, why not try to run it in chroot first?I am trying to get it to run on a chroot envoirnment using VNC first..but till now no success.
Edit:Got it to work on the chroot envoirnment..If any one is interested then let me know i will post the instructions
If there really is usb host mode on this device (dont know why it shouldn't be), then running it natively could be really cool, even be of some good use to people. It's a pretty powerful device so. Drivers will get kind of hard to get though, especially for the gpu, or am I wrong? chroot isn't really that useful, so natively is the way to go. If only I knew more about this, I would help, but one thing, the bootsequence is already done for the DHD, so that part atleast shouldn't require much work to get working on this phone?
Edit: And if we get ubuntu running, there shouldn't be that hard to get a working meego on there either, whenever that's finished ofc.

That can be cool, but we need to know more info about the o2x before :
O2x support USB-HOST ?
If not, can linux support O2x bluetooth stack ?
What about audio ? the only phone that get supported by ubuntu dont have sound support.
The Toshiba Folio 100, a NVidia Tegra 2 device, support ubuntu, anyway to use it on O2x and not start from beginning ?
There is an interested developers ?
I have found the sulotion : you must follow this guide
http://androlinux .com/android-ubuntu- development/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-android/
So dowload the ''ubuntu.zip'' but when you unzip the file replace all ''loop1" by ''loop5'' in bootubuntu file. That all
I'M NOT RESPONSIVE IF YOU BREAK YOUR PHONE !!!
Haven't had much time to look into this yet with being end of year at uni but this might be very useful to us.

Was wondering if somebody fluent in the Linux OS could help me choose a good Linux distro. Currently running LMDE, but it seems as if my laptops battery pluments. I have a high capacity 6-cell battery which usually lasts me 6-7 hours on windows. But only lasts 4 hours or less in LMDE. Anyways I'm looking for something that has just about everything working out of the box. LMDE had my WiFi drivers... my graphics drivers... which Linux is picky with my radeon GPU. My laptop is
HP Pavilion Dv6z quad edition
AMD A8 3550-MX (APU)
Radeon HD Discrete Class Graphics (I believe its a 6220g)
6GB RAM
Etc.
If you need any more info just ask. Thanks.

Moved to Off-Topic.
Try Ubuntu, I have it set as a dual boot OS on my desktop and it had most of the drivers I needed.
Ubuntu tends to run "out of the box" without any additional installs or tweaks, so you could try it. Make a live CD and check that everything is working before you install it.
Oops. I should have mentioned I tried Ubuntu 11.10 and it wouldn't display my screen turns out it doesn't like my GPU. Tried 10.04 and it worked... but hardly. Haven't tried 12 yet... might try it and see if it still does the black screen deal. Trying to stay away from fedora or RPM based distros as I hear they are a little more difficult and I'm a Linux illiterate.

Intresting never heard of it.. then again the only ones you ever really hear of are Ubuntu and Fedora... so ill take a look at it. I understand desktops are a lot more linux friendly? Wondering if there is one that is more laptop friendly. Laptops tend to have more drivers such as Wifi bluetooth and so on and so forth. Maybe somthing like that?

Ah my fault, completely missed where you said that, sorry 'bout that.
If you grab the "AMD64" iso image you should be fine, it's been a while but I remember running Ubuntu 9.04 on AMD with no problems, you should be fine.
Debian squeeze is very good for that sort of thing

Try Ubuntu, it will make you just happy
I have always been a Windows user, however I recently ordered 2 Samsung 840 Pro SSDs, which i was going to use for a Raid 0 setup with windows 8. However when UPS came to drop them off, I go to get them from my front door, and come to find my windows pc on a BSOD.. Annoyed i decide I want to use one of these SSD's to install Ubuntu or some other distro (decide on ubuntu) and install it on a SSD, and use as my main OS.
Keep in mine I have used Ubuntu before and tried out other distros but never as my main OS. Usually in virtual box or maybe a dual boot that ends up getting deleted later. But this time I wanted it to be different, I was going to set it up how i wanted it and keep and use it as my main OS.
So yesterday I did this, I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on this new SSD. When it is done, I restart and am amazed on how quickly it boots. I know this is mostly because of the SSD, but it just completely skipped the ubuntu dot loading/boot screen. Motherboard post, ubuntu purple real quick, flash and bam its on login screen. 15 seconds from the push of power button.
Anyways once im in ubuntu, first thing i do is check for any updates, install those. Then I reboot. Now this next part is the part I am worried about. Installing the AMD propriety drivers. This task in the past has never gone well with me. Drivers seem to install, but reboot to non booting ubuntu. Or super slow choppy ubuntu. Meanwhile thanks to http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu I finally successfully installed AMD drivers (13.1 catalyst to be exact) now extremely happy me goes to install steam for linux . Install it, login, and first thing i do is download/install team fortress 2. Once that installs I click play, and bam it opens and plays. You dont know how happy i was to see this considering I have tried about a month ago to install ubuntu in dualboot to test steam. And never could get the drivers right or load tf2. I now go to install all my other linux compatible steam games, my humble bundle games etc.
Anyways this is getting too long for you guys to read lol . For the next couple hours I installed all the programs i wanted (chrome etc) then I wanted to customize some things. I didn't like unity much, but since this is ubuntu all that can be changed.
I ended up installing:
Cinnamon 1.6 desktop environment
Elementary Luna Mod Cinnamon theme
Plank + ElementaryOS-plank theme
Pantheon-terminal (from elementaryOS , not really needed but like the look of it lol)
Elementaryish theme for GTK+ and window theme (as you can see I like eOS look)
Elementary-icon theme
For a end result of this
Screenshot: http://i1.minus.com/ibcjIiidyTMpHL.png
Conclusion: I really love my setup now and will difinaly be using it as my main OS. However the little gamer inside me needs windows installed somewhere, so ill be using a 2ND SSD for windows (along with a 1TB hdd) pretty much 100% for games. May even set it up to boot right to steam big picture mode if thats possible lol. But valves attitude towards linux, and the humble bundles are both very positive things!
