[Q] Differences between 2.2 and 2.3 (Nexus users?) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I should state right away that I do not see my Galaxy S as a toy that I can constantly play with, tweek, flash, and so on... that holds no interest for me whatsoever. Full disclosure time, I work in IT.
Nor am I interested in upgrading anything from version 1.01 to 1.03 just because 1.03 is newer and therefore MUST be better.
I did upgrade from the stock 2.2 to 2.2.1 for three main reasons.
1/ it removed the "3" branding from the boot cycle.
2/ it now gives me OTA update facility
3/ 2.2 was a bit laggy now and again
I did of course root it the instant I got it, my hardware, my root, but it doesn't go much beyond that, certainly not to the point where I think I know better than samsung.
What makes the Galaxy S (I hesitate to call it a phone) useful to me is the various apk's I have installed, no games, all work / productivity related, I am walking around with a pocket sized network connected mini computer that makes the Star Trek tricorder look like a joke.
It's the installed apk's that make this device a killer.
(in the sense that what's the difference between a win2k box and a win7 box? none, until you start loading application software)
So, all that said, what are the REAL differences between 2.2.1 and 2.3, I don't mean the differences touted on websites, I mean the actual real world differences that users, hopefully users similar to me, have noticed?
Is 2.3 going to allow coders to write more flexible and powerful apk's?
Or is 2.3 going to be what I would assume based upon 30 years experience in the IT industry, eg a point release, that is more fine tuning and tweaking and polishing under the hood, where 99% of users can't see it?
TIA

[Q] Android on Diamond, which version to use? (specific help)

Hello every one.
I'm the proud user of a HTC Touch Diamond. It has served me well since day one, and now i want to make it even better.
I need the phone to work. And i need Android (read: want). So i'm asking everyone which version do you find more stable. What i need:
Phone. Must work. Must work well. Cannot wait 20 seconds for the device to wake up (while ringing) to show me who's calling me. When i decide to pick up, the other guy gives up, or the call os forwarded to voice mail.
Wifi is a must, that sim has no data plan.
Battery, though superficial due to a 2400mAh bat, it takes alot of calls and sms's.
Market. Must work.
Camera is a bonus, helps here and there.
The rest is rest. i don't need bluetooth, GPS, or anything like that. Anything from 2.1 forward is enough. So... i'm open to suggestions.
I did this same question of the kaiser section, and was greeted with 2 very stable versions. One Eclair and one Froyo.
froyo b ver 6
it is very stable
and the 3d performance is better than the old version
url http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970476
I'm getting 21FPS (diam100) and 20.2FPS (raph100) with NeoCore with no overclock and camera+camcoder works great
I'm currently using that one.
Though "snappy", its quite slow. Market is a pain. (Wifi)
Takes too much time to wakeup and show the screen (i actually have to unlock to see the screen).
Looking for something else maybe. 3D isn't a must.
I've got three different Android ROMs form different developers and the fastets and most stable ROM would be http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907509
additions like camera or WiFi works fine for me.

Best Settings??

Hello All,
Have just started using this forum and failed to introduce myself previously, my name is Jay; I am 27 from DC but in Afghanistan for a few more months (yea..sucks) new to rooting, flashing and all that but I have recent interest in it and it passes the time better than most thing we are "allowed" to do over here.
I just switched from a HTC Desire to a Galaxy Captivate
So far...I have unlocked it (via cellunlocker.net), upgraded to the leaked 2.3.4 Gingerbread, Rooted using the 10step method posted here, Installed Victory v1.5 Rom, tried flashing Talon kernel but bricked the phone and had to redo the above...
My question is to those more knowledgeable than myself with all this...what is the best Kernel, Rom, Modem...whatever else...that I can have on this device to keep it running smoothly, fast and reliable?
I do all the basic call, txt, surf...play games, watch movies, use apps, etc...not a developer but want my phone to be tweaked as much as possible so it does not seem outdated or lag with new things being added.
My current settings are:
Baseband I897UCKH3
Firmware 2.3.4
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKH3-CL461307
Build VictoryRom_v1.5
There is nothing wrong with the phone...as I said above, if I could do more to it and have an overall better device and pass some time here I would enjoy that. Victory seems great but all I notice myself is the battery indicator has changed and...thats about it (a lot likely goes unnoticed by me)
I do have one problem with the phone that maybe a different modem can fix? (I hope) for some reason my GPRS will not work out here with my browser...I can use the market and apps that connect to the internet but my browser seems to be WiFi only. I have changed the settings from usa to europe since I am using a sim from over here but no luck...and added the gprs settings to the phone which allowed apps internet access but zero for browser..any ideas?
I really thank anyone who takes the time to reply...I am sure teaching a new person in this is annoying just as showing the new guy here how to clean his weapon...lol...but we were all new at everything once and I thank you all for reading my novel
-Jay
Jay,
Thank you so much for your service and contribution to our freedom, I know it must be hard to be away from the life you once knew. Hang in there It's not for nothing. Hopefully someone will be able to help with your GPRS settings. I am running the same setup on my captivate only I have used Boogs kernel to install clockwork recovery as well. You can flash boogs kernel over the kernel you have now and that will let you flash roms or speedmods later. If I were you I'd keep my eyes peeled for GPRS settings in your area and wait for EXT or speedmod kernel for the 2.3.4 They are saying RFS is pretty quick to begin with though. It may be hard to beat but im sure one of these great Devs will figure out a way to make 2.3.4 smokin fast. Once again thanks for doing what you do. Keep your head down Soldier!
Steve
If you like using your mobile providers Net, you might give I9000 ports a try. They allow for better Upload speeds but you will sacrifice Audience chip support (noise suppression processor that only I897 have). Also since I9000 source usually drop first they have all sorts of kernel mods like Voodoo sound, Voodoo color fix, BLN, init.d files tweaks like V6, among many more. Sadly I897 native roms always play catch up with I9000's.
Personally I prefer native rom, because they tend to run smoother for longer periods of time (I9000 tend to slow down over time on my phone, but thats just my experience) and I don't use ATT's network a whole lot (90% of the time I'm around a wifi connection) and I like the audience chip, it is a phone before anything else.
Edit: Also there isn't a "best" rom, kernel or modem. Each rom has their own pros and cons, same as Kernels. And no 2 phones are the exact same so not all of them take well to all the tweaks, mods, etc. And most of the time i9000 kernels wont work with i897 roms, at least in GB.

New phone next week, some questions.

I will be getting a Galaxy Note next week and as I have never owned a Samsung device before nor an Android phone (I do own a tablet but it is a WIFI-only one) I would like to pose a few questions:
* Is the bootloader locked on Samsung devices?
* Is it safe to install all OTA updates? Like e.g. on my Acer tablet the newest OTA update disables root access and locks the bootloader, too, the previous updates didn't do this and thus it definitely isn't safe to blindly accept OTA updates. If it isn't safe to install OTA updates which version(s) should I avoid? (I am located in Finland, northern Europe, if that bears any significance)
* What is the best PC-to-Phone and Tablet-to-Phone tethering solution? Googling around and Android Market suggests PdaNet for this, but it is not free and while it isn't exactly expensive I wish to know if there are other alternatives.
* Can Galaxy Note play high-profile H.264 1080p with H/W acceleration, or can it only do baseline-profile H.264 1080p with H/W? My Acer tablet does not do H/W high-profile so it kind of sucks for consuming random video content on the Internet.
Otherwise I have scoured the forums somewhat now and it seems Mobile Odin -- whatever that is -- is the preferred way of installing custom ROMs. I don't know yet how to root the phone, but I suppose it'll be easy to find out. Also I know ICS is promised for Galaxy Note but that Samsung hasn't seemingly given any timeframe for that, and the CyanogenMod ICS ROM is missing too many things for it to be suitable for my uses. As such I don't really have any other questions at the moment, but I would be grateful if someone offered some useful advice that I should know.
OT: I got to play with a display-model at a local phone shop and geesh damn the screen is big for a phone! I'm quite excited, can hardly stay put waiting for the end of next wekk
No one knows an answer to any of these things? What interests me the most is the [email protected] high-profile vs. baseline-profile question.
* Is the bootloader locked on Samsung devices?
- Nope.
* Is it safe to install all OTA updates?
- If you're not rooted, yes. If you're rooted it does occur that it will remove root access, but it you flash a custom ROM you won't get OTA updates. That's no problem since you can easily flash the update manually within minutes. So don't worry about OTA updates.
What is the best PC-to-Phone and Tablet-to-Phone tethering solution?
- I have no idea since i'm not using it, but PDAnet is the most popular (i think)
Can Galaxy Note play high-profile H.264 1080p with H/W acceleration, or can it only do baseline-profile H.264 1080p with H/W?
- Not 100% sure, but i think you have to put it in a mp4 container for it to work.
About rooting, it's very easy and you can follow these steps. When you've done that you'll have CWM which can flash ROM's and make full backups of your ROM's in case you want to restore or something goes wrong.
There are a couple of things (like the video playback and tethering) i'm not sure of, so some other people will have to step in and possible correct me

[Q] Help with probable S5 Mini clone

Got my hands - ( don't ask how ) - on what appears to be a fake S5 Mini. Everything about it says Samsung, however neither Kies nor Odin detect the phone and the specs are all wrong anyway. Attached are screenshots from Device Info and CPU-Z.
The phone actually works OK, though it's not nearly as good as a real S5 Mini. But there are several glitches in the system: some apps or options just don't work, multi-language support is deficient, etc.
Nothing surprising from a clone.
Question: is there a ROM I can try to load to that device to see if I can make it work better? I was reading up on MoKee (because of the serrano3g identifier in the model name displayed by CPU-Z), would one of those ROMs work? The phone/wifi/BT portions all work correctly, so I guess there's no need to flash a new radio. Then again, I haven't flashed an Android device in a couple years, I'm basically like a newbie at that stuff, so if anyone can provide me with information on what/how to flash, I'd be grateful.
Thanks!
neat
Any pictures of the phone itself?
SOC seems to be a MediaTek MT6572 if correct see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687487
@protogenxl: Visually, it's an exact replica of a Samsung S5 Mini, with the brandname and all. So if you check out the Samsung site, you'll find plenty of pictures there!
As for the thread you mentioned, I had already read it but I'm still not sure whether that particular ROM can be installed on my device, even though it's a MT6572 ROM. And keep in mind that I am a newbie on flashing devices, so I'm not even sure where to start, what tools to use and what I should be looking for.
Thanks for the suggestion, though!
s5
I have a S5 Mini G8800-F, so the most interesting part would be the layout of the inside of the battery compartment, is the dead space for a second sim there etc....
I would say first order of business is getting a custom recovery installed and getting full backups of original OS in a safe place, after that should be relatively hard to completely brick it as I seriously doubt the clone company put any effort in to boot security
@protogenxl: I'll try and upload a picture of the battery compartment later today. Don't recall seeing a second SIM slot in there, though.
And I agree with you that the clone company didn't put any effort on securing the device. It was rooted when I got it, it's got one of those chinese bootloader menus (I found a video on Youtube explaining what each option means).
As for the custom recovery, should I just pick any of them or are there any recommendations specific to this chipset (or do I even have to care about the chipset at that stage)?
@protogenxl it has been to long since I messed with sisters then boyfriend's phone to get it usable but if memory serves I got a custom made version of CWM from the ChinaPhoneArenea forum.
@protogenxl: here's a youtube video I found which describes the exact device I have: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_-OoKhkD_0
It shows it with its back cover open around the 2:30 mark.

Is this the best place to ask about Moto Z3 (non-play, XT1929-17)

Hello,
I'm very new to android roms
Well, I did a little bit of that back in pre-2010 times and some times with my samsung galaxy nexus, but I assume things have changed a lot since then.
I have many XT1929-17 Z3 non-play and a couple Z4 XT1380 and a few Z2F
I want to try many things,
Download all firmware from each phone, and upload firmware to a phone (I guess that's the flash device and radio firmware , not sure)
Make setup a phone to my taste, make a backup so I can continue messing around without having to go through the entire setup process again !
Next, I have the crappy verizon firmware, I would like the stock android or Z3 motorola stock firmware instead of the verizon one ! WIth all the non-erasable bloat- and spy-ware
Next, I am stuck on Android 9 forever, I would like to try android 10/11/12 especially if the moto mods and gestures are still working. Really, just android 10 would be great, the only thing I really want is darkmode notifications and settings !
After that, if there are roms for those, I would like to try lineageos, grapheneos, pixel experience and the other popular firmwares that are made for many phones.
I would like the fastboot and adb windows 10 offline drivers to remote control all aspects of the phone. (I will be using many of those phones as wifi cameras and I'm trying to reliably stop and start recording 240fps video with wifi remote control)
Oh, and I would like to try just plain linux on those phones, if that's even possible. Even if that's just cpu/ram/wifi. I'd like to use one of them as a mini server
I think that's pretty much all I want to try with these phones, do you have advice on how to do this on Moto Z3 non-play ?
Thanks !
you cannot run linux on android smartphone, except you're talking about "linux" on top of "android kernel" which still provides full hardware HAL access. the overhead is nearly the same as running android, so no point in this. but here you go.
