I planing to buy a milestone second hand.
the guy says that the phone doesn't want to format the memory card - he says it's from the software. so he is selling it pretty cheap. the phone is in warranty till august 2012.
i intend to buy it, root and flash custom rom and i think this will fix the issue.
do you guys think this can be a hardware problem though?
or maybe the memory card is in bad shape and he doesn't know it?
You can always format the memory card using a laptop or a computer..
If the card itself is in bad shape, buy a new one, they aren't that expensive
he sais the phone cannot format the card and shows that the card is not formated ( i'm asuming he tryed formating on the pc and still dones't work).
can the problem be from the hardware?
It can.
Easiest way to find out is meet with the seller, and bring a fat32 formatted microsd card with you.
If the phone can read it, then go ahead and buy it. If it cannot (and the seller is telling you that you cannot return merchandise), then you might be taking an uncalculated risk there.

thanks for the info. i will test it with the card from my htc tattoo.
but if the problem is from the software, than a custom ROM can fix it i guess. well it's maybe a try and risk case and i'll have to sell it afterwards.
well i had this sdcard issue as well. Neither my phone nor ubuntu could format my sdcard. A new 8 GB card for 9,50€ solved it for me so maybe its the same for you

Wait, the warrant is up to aug 2012?
AFAIK, Motorola only issues 1 year of warranty.
You should ask him again

If you are looking for true custom ROMs then I would look else ware due to the Milestones looked bootloader.
i was just looking arround for a phone better than what i have - htc tattoo. i love the little thing and don't need anything extremly fast/new or fancy. milestone is nice and the price is good. i just hope this can be worked around with th e sd card
Yeah, just get another one.
Before formatting sdcard you chose an option-settings/sdcard and phone storage/unmount sdcard for safe removal. Then you can format sdcard form the phone itself.
I am pretty sure that's the issue because it happened with me too.

Take with you working sd card an try to format it with phone if it can't format it do a hard reset and try again. When you do hard reset and if the phone can't format card I think this is hardware problem may be the sd card slot is damaged. If everything is ok buy it Milestone is very good android device.

so I kinda gave it all away in the title.... but I just dropped my phone and now it seems like it wont read the sd card.. not the first time I drop the phone I had just dropped it some days ago.. now first I thought that maybe it just erased the sd card ... some time back it erased a few files some mp3s and some pix vids just random stuff..
It actually doesn't boot but considering I have a hero rom I didn't think it can be for any other reason than it just doesn't read the sd....
so has anyone out there seen this b4?
pm please if you have an answer.
pS. will my tmo insurance cover it??
Obvious question coming up.....have the taken the card out and put it back in? If that doesn't work then it's a hardware fault.
If you have a contract with tmo, then brick it by flashing the old radio via fastboot and explain that that's what happened after you updated...
tried that
that was the first thing I did....
I do have a contract with them it has been a yr since the purchase of this phone... ill try the fastboot I didnt think bout that thanx! i might just go back to rc29 and just call tmo and tell them the sd wont read and see what they say
I had this exact thing happen to me after dropping my phone. You don't really need to brick the phone to get a replacement. Check out this thread where I pretty much talked to myself and ended up comming up with a solution that left the phone in stock condition with a bad reader that T-Mobile did infact warranty

I have a question for anyone on the forum who has experience repairing HTC HD7 handsets.
I recently bought a HTC HD7 on ebay with a "storage card error," message thinking I could easily repair it re-seating or replacing the SD card and doing a hard reset. By swapping out parts from another HTC HD7 I had, I was able to diagnose the problem as a faulty SD card reader. The SPL bootloader would read "SD SANDISK 15193MB" when the working reader was connected, and "SD NONE" when the defective reader was connected using the same card. The SIM card reader worked in both cases.
I ordered a SIM/SD reader assembly replacement from an ebay seller, I installed it, and it acted just as the defective reader I already had... SIM works, SD card doesn't. I got a replacement from the same seller, and it acts exactly the same.
Just wondering if I'm overlooking something, or if it's possible I got two SIM/SD reader assemblies where the SD card reader is the defective component on both.
The reader was sold as for the HTC HD7 T9292 (mine is the T-Mobile US version.) There is a slight difference in the labeling. The replacements had extra text "myd" on them, and had a number 1045 on them instead of the original 1041.
have you tested the sd? all that you have written sounds like a defective sd, have you tried another sandisk on it? even a 2GB would do... also do you have a nokia E series to format and recovery the microsd? I use a E63 to recover the miscrosd used on wp, and test them on windows...

Your bootloader version needs to be 5.xx or higher

I have tested it with a couple different SD cards. As I said, it works with my other SIM/SD reader assembly that I swapped out from another working HD7, it just doesn't work with the replacement part ones I ordered.

Can you explain this? I'm using the latest deepshining ROM on this phone, so the bootloader has never been above version 3.1.2250. I'm willing to go stock WP7.8 with the version 5.xx bootloader if you think it will help the situation, but I did get the SD card to work under HSPL 3.1.2250 and a swapped-out SIM/SD reader assembly. At this point I'm just considering buying a horrible condition HD7 to swap out the SIM/SD reader assembly, since the replacement part ones I ordered don't seem to work.
The bootloader thing is BS, I have had 4 different bootloader on both of my devices: 1.x, 3.x, 4.x and 5.x; , I stayed with the 3.x, for the custom roms...
Now, if you have tested the reader from another HD7 and works fine, then the part you bought is damaged...
From where you bought that part?
You must buy again because the "replacement" is damaged (DOA)...
Regards

The problem is, I bought one, found it not to be working, and asked the seller for a replacement, which they sent for free. When I found the second one not to be working, I began to assume the problem was with me... that I was overlooking some logical thing that was keeping the part from working correctly. While I understand it's possible I may have received two defective parts, I hate to ask the seller for a third one, when it's possible I really don't know what I'm doing
This was the item
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151015786511
Anyway, I ordered a cracked-screen HD7 for cheap which I'm going to scrap for parts. Hopefully that one will work.
have you tested the replacements on the working phone? the good one? I assume: YES.
If the the answer is that, you knock me out! Just my 2 cents: I have the T-Mobile HD7, but that bastard can't work with 850 and 900 MHz GSM networks, only 1900 and (possibly) 1800MHz, it keeps resetting or freezing!!!
I thought that it was the microSD, but no it wasn't, so it's the radio card(the shielded one)
Some time you receive a rotten egg
like what happened to me...
Hope you figure out the solution... Regards.
having some problems with sd cards on the z. bought a cheap 64G card off ebay and the phone reads it as 64 gigs but when i copied a bunch of videos and pictures to it from my laptop they showed on the windows file explorer but some didn't show up when i plugged it into the phone. also pictures taken with the phone say cannot save and the videos say cannot play this file. ok so i figured i got ripped with a bogus card on ebay and thats what i get for going for a deal that seemed too good to be true. bought another card this time a 64GB sandisk ultra that i know and trust because i have had the same exact card in another phone for over a year with no problems. well lo and behold same problem with this card in my wifes z. now i'm wondering is this a hardware issue? has anyone else had problems with 64GB cards? when i first put it in it didn't ask for a format or anything so i assume the z can handle these cards. her z is completely stock unrooted and running the latest 4.2.2
Is the card formatted as exFAT? I believe it has to be to work correctly in the Z.

Get the SD Association tool from here and format the card while it's in your PC via a card reader.
If it still doesn't work, you may have a faulty/counterfeit card. Return it for a refund and if you didn't buy directly from someone reputable (even a seller on Amazon may stock counterfeit cards), then do so.

originally it didn't ask for a format, but then i got an error stating card damaged and would i like to format it. this happened while trying to transfer a folder of videos onto the card yesterday. anyways it is formatted through the phone now and i just spent hours transferring all her photos and videos back onto it. i set her camera to save to the internal memory now so we'll see if the problem persists. if it happens again i will try to format with your tool one last time. thanks for your advice!
I've looked everywhere all over the internet to see if anyone has experienced this issue with not many answers. A while back my Micro SD slot would not read after a few events that I'm not sure which one may be the cause. I have a 32gb Sandisk Class 10 it works and was the proper format when I had it in the phone, it works fine in other devices and phones but not my phone. One event I had was that my phone got extremely hot one day when I was using it outside on a very hot day. Had to turn it off for a little while. But the other event is that I used the test 4.4.2 one click odin back in august. After those few things my micro sd slot never worked again I flashed to an official 4.4.2 using odin and have root but still not able to see the sd card at all. I want to know what I can do, phone is out of warranty. Is there a software issue or would I have to replace the Micro SD/Sim Slot. Is there anyone that would be able to fix this. Could I just replace the logic board, and If that is the case could I replace the logic /mother board with one from a tmobile phone, unlocked bootloader.

At least if it's an SD card issue, getting a replacement is as easy as going to http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/list/kw/microsd microsdhc/ opening a live chat and asking for one.

Hard to say. Stock 4.4.2 should read the SD card, no matter what was there before. (If my many-times-bricked phone can still read the SD card with almost stock 4.4.2, yours should too.)
or would I have to replace the Micro SD/Sim Slot. Is there anyone that would be able to fix this.

It could be the slot. I'd ask around for recommendations where you live. Some shops are great, some just ruin your phone. (I know - I owned a few before I retired. The "techs" who just wanted to start repairing phones, with no training, made "dime a dozen" sound expensive. [Not that I ever hired one. You want to work for me, here's a phone that doesn't work. You have 30 minutes to call me from it.])

Probably. Not "you", though - someone who's opened a cellphone before, at least a few times. One wrong pinched wire and you'll need another motherboard. (The battery has enough power in it, when fully charged, to weld the plastic case to the wooden table - figuratively speaking. Pinch a wire with full battery current available to ground and you'll let all the "magic smoke" out of the phone and it'll stop working.)
...
Well I have opened up a few phones before its not that hard. As far as getting a local shop to swap the slot out that my prove to be a little hard considering were I live the people here are 10 years behind technology. Plus I think it would cost me as much as just buying a new logic board. What I really want is to flash a new rom to my phone I can deal with the 32gb of storage, but everytime I upload a rom and flash it from safestrap my internal memory goes to 0mb available then I have to odin reflash even when I load up via adb, when I restart the phone pass safe strap I just go into a black screen never does anything after that. Right now I'm just running stock 4.4.2 root
Well I think I answered my own question, just bought an OTG cable, I forgot about using a flash drive
Hey,
since I crashed my phone physically last month, I've been trying to repair it, by installing a new middle frame and display. I failed horribly. The new display cracked as well and I don't know why that happened. This is when I decided to just get a new Mi 5. Since there are important files on the old phone that I didn't backup, I came up with the idea of placing the old mainboard with 64GB of storage inside the new phone which is the 32GB version of the Mi 5.
Did anyone ever do this? It should be possible right? Or is there something fundamentally different in the smaller version of the phone?
Thanks for your help
The problem is that the phone memory is soldered to the motherboard... It actually is on top of the processor itself.

(he talks about the memory too)
Sorry about the files.
Should be possible
Have already done this with another phone, should also be possible on this one. If it doens't work for a reason, you can just place the 32GB motherboard back.
Thank you very much for your input guys.

I'm afraid that THIS is the problem. The memory (your old 32 GB) are soldered to the motherboard. If you replace the motherboard, those old 32 GB will be gone. You'll have 64 GB but none of your old data in them. Of course, replacing the 32 GB motherboard with another 32 GB one won't solve the problem...
Sorry for bringing bad news. Regards.

I think you got that wrong.
My old broken phone is the 64G version. I bought the 32G one because it was a lot cheaper. I am placing my old 64G motherboard in the 32G phone. So the old data is on the 64G memory.

Ok, now I understand (and I should have understood before if I had read the original message carefully ). For what i understand, if the motherboard works you should have no problem. Sorry for my mistake.

Just wanted to reply to this thread since I did the swap yesterday. It all worked!
The 32GB version of the xiaomi mi5 apparently also had a reduced base clockspeed of only 1.8GHz. My 64G board is running at 2.1GHz.
Everything is working so far without any issues.
