for simple launchers, you can take a look at zeam. very basic settings.
for more customizations, try adw(free), adw ex(paid), or launcherpro. lots of features. example, you can adjust number of rows and columns your homescreen has and you can enable scrollable widgets on your homescreens. these are just some of the options.

Did you moved all those apps to sdcard? If so, try install them without moving to sdcard. Restart your tab again and see if the icons stays on homescreen.

Yes i did move them to sd card but to get them back to the phone will rise a big problem of storage and it will be easier to deal with the disappearance .what do thing about that ?

Some apps are not coded to handle 2.2 (move2sd) thats what i think. Don't quote me for that. As it did happened to me once with an app disappearing. After moving it back, everything went well.
Don't think apps take alot of space even if you have like 60+ apps.

If you use Multicon they stay and you get more icons.

The best you can do, with so many apps, is moving them to sd, and use "folder organizer" to manage them in folders.
Then you can put a widget on your home with all your categories and folders.
I do this way, and I never use the app drawer
Sure it will take a bit to categorize all those apps, but it's worth it, folder organizer is the best android app.
(It also have a tasker plugin, so you can, for example, use a long press of the search button to open the main folder from any application)

I was also having this problem just not on my home screen...After reading/looking found this thread and viola! no more missing shortcuts!
Not sure why having them on sd card would be a cause for them to disappear but that seems to be a bug [samsung?].

[Q] How to Rename Application for Root Users

I've searched this and other forums and still can't ffigure out how to change an applications name for a Rooted G1. I've been able to change an application's icon by switiching the .png in the drawtable folder, but where the heck is the apps name info stored?
Thanks for your help in advance.

That is probably going to require either editing the appropriate xml files, or rebuilding the ROM from source to be able to get access to other appropriate files. It may be more trouble than its worth. There may be an app for it, but I am not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in if they know of another way?

Well its been a long minute since I've used any home replacement but you can still use bettercut on with using open home or ahome. The only thing I'm wondering is when you change the name of the app does it only change on the home screen or in the app drawer to. I'm to lazy to do it myself.
You don't need a home replacement to use Bettercut.

Thanks for everyone's help in trying to solve this one. As previous post's have noted; Bettercut will only change the name on the Home screen or App drawer, not in the application list.
How about this...if it's too much trouble to rename, is it easy to hide an application from appearing at all?

No its actually quite easy to keep it from appearing.....uninstall it.
Oh come on you gotta admit, you were asking for that one LOL
I'm assuming you don't want it appearing in your app drawer? Is that the issue? Are you talking about applications that come on the ROM that you don't want anymore. Please provide not only the end result of what you are looking for, but also a little background and maybe that will help with an answer.
Yes, I did set myself up for that one.
It's a 3rd party app that runs at startup. I would like to hide the app from appearing in the Manage Application menu. Thanks again!!
You can use the modified launcher to hide installed apps from the app drawer but I dont think you can hide from the manage applications section.
Thanks for the input Rodney!
can u also rename apps with the modified launcher?

[ROM][6-21-2011] De-Crapified Clean ROM V1.1

Howdy all!
I present to you, a deodexed/de-bing'd and de-crapified shipping ROM.
This ROM is still 2.2.2, and is based off the stock LG ROM (so it still contains LG's colorization and notification bar mods).
Changes from Stock ROM:
Included ADW Launcher as default launcher
Removed Bing - long press search button = Google Voice search (included)
Set Google as default quick press search button
Removed Bing from Browser.apk (typing in URL bar goes to Google now)
Added Gingerbread keyboard (and removed LG keyboard)
Renamed LGHome, removed weather widget (only worked on LGHome anyway)
Removed CityID
Removed a few other junk apks in /system/app (Netflix, FriendsWidget, Photowidget, userGuide, Weather Widget)
Deodexed /system/framework and /system/app
Removed the setup help videos, saving 100mb in /system
This rom is pre-rooted!

Extract the .zip to your external SD card in /clockworkmod/backup/
This should give you "/clockworkmod/backup/revo_decrap-1.0"
Boot to Clockwork, select "Backups/Restore", then "Advanced Restore". Select "revo_decrap-1.0", then select "System".
Once the restore finishes, select "Advanced" then "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Reboot, and enjoy your new ROM!
If you get a lot of force closes, you may need to wipe /data.
Press and hold the search button, and it should ask you what app you want to use to handle that intent.

MD5 Mismatch! What do I do?

To find out, check where your "nandroid.md5" file is.
The correct path should be (from a PC using USB storage)
Code:
/clockworkmod/backup/revo_decrap-1.1/nandroid.md5
Most of the time you see "md5 mismatch" or other errors, it is because you have something like this:

Question. I'm one of the rare ones that kind of like what comes with the LGHome, such as calendar, music player etc. Those won't work if the LGHome is gone right? Are you going to try to make them work with something like ADW or is that not possible? I'm not a stock apps fan, though i like the dock setup and app drawer setup better on just about any other launcher.
I'm currently downloading this, i just want to know what's in the future. I know there's calendar setups and music apps that could even be better but i'm kind of minimalist and really like the look of the stock optimus ones.

LGHome is included, and LG's calendar, music app, and useful apps are still included.
Next release will leave the parts of LGHome that the other apps need, but LGHome's homescreen functionality will be filled by ADWLauncher (essentially de-braining LGHome).
Good deal, that's what i wanted to hear.

? I never had problems with wiping data... did you go through the activation process?
Should have said "please wait for activation" on first boot after data wipe...
I had to wipe data with this ROM since i accidentally nuked /data, so I know it works...
EDIT: try wiping data again, and going through the setup wizard...
I'm heading to bed for now, but if you can't get it working, just download my stock rom from my other post, it'll work for sure.
i wiped data again and again it still wouldn't recognize my sim. then i pulled the sim and the battery. and im not kidding the third time i pulled the sim out, let it sit for a few minutes... it worked. maybe my sim is flakey.... but its up now and de-binged! yes! although long press on the search button brings up google voice search, short pressing it brings up "the application Home (process android.process.lghome) has stopped unexpectedly. pleas try again" im too scared to wipe anything again after all this sim trouble lol
I have had this problem, and I burned up 4 sim cards and a phone in the process. If its the same problem that is .
When you do a wipe of your phone, you MUST have your network set to 4G. Otherwise it just won't work or it will be very flaky.
Ohhh really, I did have lte turned off because its not where I live.thanks, I'll keep that in mind. So, does this mean that it will be ok to wipe data even if I'm not in a 4g area? (hoping this is just a thing that happens just because I had lte turned off, and not because I need lte signal).
Got it up and running and loving it. Thank you so much for fixing long press voice search! Did you fix the short press Google text search or is that a part of the upcoming features?

It's not apps per say. It's those wallpaper apps that have silly app icons in the drawer. Like the SGSIII wallpaper, Nexus wallpaper, etc etc. See screen shot below. It's just a personal pet peeve of mine thats all. Something I used to be able to hide with the Xperia launcher add on while using my Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I thought the native Xperia launcher would have also had this feature natively.
but you still can make it a bit cleaner, why you dont reorganize yours apps?. I have on first screen only most used apps, on second - multimedia and navi, third - games, fourth - rare used, fifth - junk from system, like help ect.

Again, why dont you just delete those apps? They dont come on generic firmwares, its just bloatware...delete them
Hiding them does nothing to free up space on your system, it just removes the icon..if you are that bothered about icons you might want to free up space, in which case you need to delete the apps.

Can I save the home screens/Scene?

Hellow fellow forumers, can you help?
On my Desire it was possible to save the homescreens/scene as sometimes icons would go missing and it was easy to revert back to how it was.
but today I've upgraded to the MiniSG3 and have arranged all my icons on my 5 homescreens, and realised i cant find the "save Screen" option anywhere.. am i missing it?

kinda shocked to hear its not super easy to do such a basic thing especially since a 3 year old phone had the ability to save a homescreen layout.
Ill look into titanium, or.... just make sure i dont accidentally delete my icons
thanks for the replies forumers.
vonuzu is right it won't even take you five minutes
ah, I've just seen that titanium requires root..
now that's something new to me :-/
Ahh don't rush into that. Before you try anything download kies to your pc and back up your phone. All drivers will download automatically when your phone is connected. Then unplug and set usb debugging in developers options to on, reconnect phone and more drivers will download. Do this before you follow any guides on how to root your phone it will save you a lot of hassle
Do you have i8190N because root then is very easy?

Why not using custom launcher like Apex, Nova, Holo, etc? It is much more customizable. I use Holo 3D

Tips for coping with an un-rooted device

There are a lot of threads here and in the VZW forum about how terrible this device is, etc, without root. I'm a former flash-a-holic and my last several devices have all been Samsung on stock, albeit rooted, firmware. those of us preferring touchwiz have our reasons, and those who prefer aosp have theirs, but this isn't a "why we can't have aosp" thread, this is about making lemonade with what we have.
so, my reasons for wanting root, and how I worked around them:
1. ad blocking. I LOVE adaway, its seriously the first app I'd install on a new device after rooting. without root, give adblock plus a try. you can turn off the status bar notifications in the app and by ticking the box in the app manager.
its simple enough to disable apps on WiFi, just input the proxy host name and port and you're done. I hadn't ever found a clear and concise instruction on how to do this with mobile data, so here it is- create a NEW APN and copy all of the info from the stock APN, and add the proxy host name and port. done, you now have ad blocking on WiFi and mobile data, without root, and without persistent notifications.
2. de-bloating. first, the s5 has less bloat than the s3 or s4, but its still there. it is INCREADIBLY easy to disable or uninstall on this device. go to the app drawer and press the settings icon (or long press the app switcher button) and select uninstall/disable apps. if its ATT or Samsung, and you don't want it, odds are you can either uninstall or disable it. just make sure that in Samsung Apps you disable automatic updates over WiFi. you can also hide them.
myth busting time: IF you were rooted, and IF you manually removed bloat apps, you do NOT gain ANY additional usable space in device storage.
3. tether bypass. there are multiple threads here on how to do this. I have a 10gb plan so its a non issue here.
4. Writing to extSDcard. most built in apps like the browser, email, and camera will save to the ext SD card. so will my files, which is actually a LOT better than on the s3 or s4.
5. removing bloat bookmarks from the stock browser. I prefer the stock browser over chrome, call me crazy. I also don't like the 4 pre-loaded bookmarks being in my list. I saw a tip here to just create a folder called My Bookmarks or whatever you like and put your bookmarks there. the bloat is still there but its not staring you in the face.
so what else have you guys been doing to get functionality that was easy and convenient with root, but still attainable without?

Speed- I find that a lot of people nag about speed, my phone is fluid in all ways. Three factors play into this, using the TW launcher, animation speed, one last tricky one-- S-Voice has a delay on the home button waiting for the possible hook in for user prompting it. My standpoint is you can get from a TW rom the kind of speed or more that you can with a rom somebody else pre-tweaked for you.
Remedies below.
1. Get Nova Launcher (you can look into others if you like, if you want an experienced users perspective on speed, use Nova it flies)
2. Enable Developer Options(click About Device, click build number until it says Dev mode is enabled), Turn OFF animations for Transition window animation scale, transition animation scale and animator duration scale.
3. Open up S Voice (through the double-tap shortcut or in the app drawer). Tap the menu button in the top right corner (three dots) and find the "Open via home key" option under "Wake-up." Disable for slightly faster home button response.
Some people may find this abrupt transition between applications off putting at first but once you give it an hour the phone is flying so fast I could never go back. Enjoy!
As mentioned above:
Nova Launcher
Transitions at .5 or OFF
De-bloating (see this thread)
And - tasker, tasker, tasker!
My tip.. simple but I'm a customize nerd.
iFont available for free from the Play store allows you to add hundreds of fonts to your phone right from the app, and is compatible with the font selection from settings - display. You can also load fonts from the internet or your computer and use that as your default font.
The one lag, I still can't stand... despite all the animations being off is the lag between camera and gallery... like I take a photo, click the little image to view it and it sits there for at least 15 seconds before the gallery opens up. This could be due to your SD card. If you are saving pics to external SD and your card is a lower class it will read and write data in a longer time frame. If you are using internal memory and not the SD card slot then I'm not sure. Backup everything and try a factory reset. I personally don't have an SD card, I don't see the need without root. Also it takes about 3 seconds for me to do what takes you 15. That's why I think an SD might be the Culprit here
There is 1 thing you can not do without root that is needed for me. I own a Pioneer Appradio and use ARUnchained which requires root. If you don't know what it is then look it up. It basically mirrors your phone and lets you use touch on Pioneers Appradio. I used this with my GS3 and if I would have known we wouldn't have root after this long I would have kept it and not bought the GS5. There is no getting around root for this. Pioneer's stock app has restrictions and doesn't let you mirror everything where as ARUnchained solves this problem.

proxy host is "localhost" without quotes....and proxy port is 2020....that should do it :good:
Anyone got a working "volume rocker skip"? I've seen the double press ones that work as a service..seems wonky.

Thanks for the tip - I was using "Sweet Home!" app to sync my camera photos with my laptop but after multiple years without issue, all of the sudden I'm getting an invalid syntax error. Tried getting help from the developers but got no response. Dropbox it is!

RoguePC's got it covered.
my only real gripe with adblock + is it only blocks internet traffic, not in-app ads. still better than nothing though.
Anyone know how to remap buttons ? I highly doubt there is a way without root but not having a menu button is killing me

The menu button function is still there ... just long-press the recent apps button. If you've got a specific app that doesn't display the 3-dots menu somewhere on the screen, you might want to reach out to the developer. That's part of modern Android UX standards. I recently reached out to Untappd and they updated their app to include it pretty quickly.

Thanks, but what I meant is that I do not like having to hold down the button to pull up tthe menu. I much rather prefer having the recent apps by holding down home.

Ah, gotcha. Unfortunately, short of root reassigning buttons, I don't think that's a desire that will see much traction in the future now that the UX standards require on-screen menus and more devices are coming out without any soft buttons at all. When you get down to it though, you're either tapping the bottom-left of your device or you're tapping the three dots on the screen.
Awesome app called quick click, let's you map your volume buttons for flashlight and a lot of others actions, just throwing it out there missed using xposed, mods with that.
