[Q] Question about updating SOK - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry that this is out of place, but I can;t post to the Dev thread as of yet.
I am currently using Super-Optimized Kernel v4.7.8 with stock Froyo and have been very happy with it's performance and battery life. I currently have a lagfix installed (data on Ext2 and System on Ext4). I know it is best policy to remove lag fixes before flashing new kernel or Mods, but do I need to remove the lagfix before updating the kernel to a newer version of the same kernel (4.8.0), or can I leave the lagfix in place. No big deal to remove the lagfix, but if I can save the time I will.
Thanks in advance, and thanks to all modders, posters and Android savants for all you do for the community.

Usually when upgrading to the same kernel (newer version) the support of the lagfix/fs change is still there the same way it was before. So no need to disable anything. (not if the dev specifically says so)

[Q] best firmware (rom) for SGS ?

hey all member i dont know if there already exists this thread, but what do you think is the best firmware for the galaxy s ?
(ps:sry im new to anroid ^^)
Flash the latest firmware 2.2 - JP6
If I were you, I would directly flash a ROM with integrated lagfix.
There is DocRambone with his ROM,
there is Tayutama,
there are several other ROMs.
Or you try mine, so you don't have to apply different steps to get a fast Galaxy S
thx @ darkyy
yeah the most important thing for me is [....] speed ^^
my sgs is sooo [....] slow xD
is there a difference between
tayutama , docrambone, and yours?
MOD EDIT: Offensive language removed
vanilla rom is nice
Shouldn't this be in Q&A?

Jpm/jp6 firmware.
Then it up to you and your skills.
I would start with z4mod on stock firmware and convert filsystem to ext2 with z4mod.
In the process you learn to flash.and what things are.
You phone will be fast and lagfree.
Then you can look for other kernel that's out here if there things you like.
You can also do what other say here and flash a Rom.
But you will not have the same control over the system.
If you want to change Rom you also need to start all over and install all apps again.
You don't need that with z4mod.
But z4mod and many roms are very good and solve the lag for you.
Sent from GT-I9000 Jpm OS kernel with z4mod
i didnt find a "good rom" either this time so using "stock android lock screen file" and "battery mod version d" and "universal lag fix kernel" (BLN on, ext4 or jfs, some tweaks on)
also using fancy widget and a blackground and launcher pro plus
i'm quite happy with it at the moment - i deleted some samsung apk from /system to make space too, else u can't make the mods

[Q] kernel flashing for what reason?

Hi,
for what reason do I a kernel flash? Are the rom included kernels better then a lonestanding once? can I flash any kernal to any rom?
what is the benifit of flashing an other kernel then the once ued in the rom?
thanks
When you change the kernel you choose a better kernel then stock.
They are more tweaked and habeas more support fir different things.
**Using my own JPX kernel, z4mod, 345MB Ram and ext2 filesystem**
- Different file system (better battery life) (I'm still experimenting with finding the right one)
- Access to the kernel allows you to use the led backlights on the buttons for notifications.
Those are currently the main reasons why I flash diff kernels.
You can have direct acces to one of the most advance lag fixes around(voodoo) better performance ,overclocking ,color correction for ur display, more user accessable ram and so on

Good question.
Samsung open-sources their released ROMs from time to time and many of the "kernel-hackers" (I'd call them plain hackers, what's with the prefix?) here utilize it to add/provide features and fix bugs (bugs are overlooked by people, its normal).
For instance, SpeedMods' kernel provides an Overclocking support for your Phone's CPU, if you want that extra juice. Likewise, Voodoo provides a set of visual enhancements among other things.
HTH
Another important reason is to regain 2e recovery if you lost it after flashing a stock firmware. This assumes the kernel you choose includes this feature
Fine, thank you all!

[Q] "Lagfix" versus frequent new ROM installations

I know that after XXJPY we don't have no more lag, so the "lagfix" is just a name for this filesystem convertions that we learned to love here.
I stoped using EXT4 convertions since XXJPY because the custom ROMs arround recomends disabling any "lagfix" before a new install or update... but I have a question here.
I'm aways using kernels that support EXT4 filesystems, so why I have to disable the "lagfix" to make any update? If I'm going from a Darky's ROM to a new Darky's ROM version ou changing from hardcore's to supercurio's kernels, when all this systems are suposed to work with EXT filesystems, why I need to disable the "lagfix" before making this changes?
Thanks!
why I need to disable the "lagfix" before making this changes?
Different lagfix etc plus who wants to break the phone instead of disabling a lagfix .
You can always try not disabling lagfix .
jje
At least in the last iterations of Darky, you're not forced to disable the Voodoo lagfix if you had it installed, provided that you installed it with Darky's previous version. Nevertheless, since Kernels are always improving and ROM makers put them in their ROMs, it's always a good security measure to uninstall the lagfix. With devices as expensive as this one, risk-taking must be reduced.
Hmm Ok I will disable.
Thank you guys

[Q] Overlocking a SGS GT-I9000

I am pretty much sure you need to be rooted for overclock. Are you?
lots of kernels which allow for OC. Several programs that allow you to monitor and set OC available on the market, most have a free version that you can try and then buy the pro version once you have made a choice. Some kernels allow for more user control and variance, others are more prescribed -- a lot of it is personal preference and so much is phone dependent: no 2 phones are the same in terms of what OC or UV settings they will sustain.
Lastly, most kernels will have their own group of users and advocates. Some have experimented extensively with alternate kernels, some less so, but all will have a passion for the kernel that is their personal preference. There really is no substitute for your own trial and error. Download 3 or 4 and try them with a stock rom -- root and use sgs kernel flasher -- flash a custom kernel, set your OC and use it for a day. Flash another, repeat the process and continue until you find your preference.
Having found the kernel you like best, then set about flashing a custom rom that plays nice with your chosen kernel.
Take about a week but at the end you will know what you like best and why.
Between flashes, clean cache and davlik cache -- keep a good backup of apps on your pc or external sd, and even better, completely cleanse the phone between kernels -- that will standardize things and allow each kernel to operate on a clean system.

Yes i am, and i used a lagfix "if that make difference".
Sorry i know i'm noob but i'm afraid to flash into a kernael which is not oc-able :S
So do i have to know any precautions first? or the CWM is enough to restore the original kernel?
its quite easy my friend download semaphore kernel 1.8.0 and flash it via odin or recovery and after flashing just go to semaphore script manager change ur overclock values.......too simple
And then use apps such Voltage Control (in the market) to select speed & voltage of the processor.
Thx all i appreciate all your help
and for guys having the same issue here's the topic that helped me alot..:

and i don't recommend OC the processor, "SpeedMod" kernel made me satisfied.

[Q] Kernel Compatibility Question GB KK1

I recently flashed my Captivate (I897) to stock leaked 2.3.5 I897UCKK1
I am trying to understand what my options are for rooting to regain wifi tethering capability. Unfortunately, I really don't understand the kernel interaction and the potential compatibility issues. Normally, I understand I just need to stay on a kernel that was sourced from the same version (in this case KK1).
Anyway, I am hoping for some information on what kernels might be OK to use with my current ROM. My wish list in a kernel at this point would be BLN, EXT4 Lagfix (Voodoo or new CWM) and Root. From reading, it sounds like there is a lot more support for KK4.. Maybe I need to move to a KK4 ROM as well?
Thank in advance for not flaming the noob (I hope)

I suspect you're right. KK4 does have a good following since it is the newest leak, and there are several KK4 based ROMs out there in active development that support lagfix.
You won't find BLN on any i897 ROMs, though. There's no source code from Samsung so there is no way for the devs to add it in. For that, you would need to use an i9000 ROM or a 2.2 i897 ROM.
Thank you!
