I have tried both roms and whenever i listen to music, after the 1st song the music starts skipping/ chopping bad and freezes the phone.
Have you tried keeping the screen on while listening to music? If it only gets choppy when the screen is off, your cpu frequency may be too low.
also, you could change your cpu governor to ondemand, seems to work for some
Does it get choppy with other players, like Meridian?

I'm currently using the NFX ROM, which I generally like a lot. However, I do see the following behavior, which I believe is not specific to the ROM (which is why I'm posting here).
Do any of you find a lag in your Hero when you insert a headphone into your jack? My music app comes up, stalls for about 3 seconds, and is unresponsive. Then it seems to catch up and act normally. This is with the HTC music app, which otherwise works okay. Also, this doesn't happen all the time, about half the time I'd say. But it's really frustrating. The lag doesn't happen when the headset is not plugged in.
I use setcpu ,but i have it set to 480 to 710, so I don't think it's a CPU speed issue from setcpu.
Any ideas?
Clarify, when you plug your headphones in the music app automatically starts?
I use mine every morning when I walk to class. I plug in the headphones, open the music app, and start playing a random song. The music app isnt as fast or responsive as I would like but it doesn't lag bad enough to be an annoyance. I too am on nfx.
Maybe you could try using the other music player. The Android one, not the HTC. It's faster for me but doesn't have the lockscreen controls.

I wondered why CM7 does not allow the data stream, when the screen is off? With stock rom I could listen TuneIn- radio when screen is closed but CM7 stops stream as soon as the screen goes off. I do not use any battery or memory management programs. just pure CM7.

Answer to myself. The problem wasn't in CM7. The problem was Smartass governor. When smartass is on Tunein-radio stops streming when screen turns off. Spotify stream doesn't stop completely but it stutter a lot. Conservative works fine.
I saw similar threads like 2 years ago, but none of the solutions helped me so I decided to create new one.
Here is my situation.
When I play music (flac, mp3, ogg, whatever...) every some time (3,4,5 minutes) music stops for a fraction of a second.
Maybe it's nothing but it's irritating.
I eventually found what is responsible. Its GPS receiver. When I turn it off, everything is ok. I could live with that, but... I often listen to music, and use GPS at the same time so it would be nice to get it working together. Is there any chance to fight this issue?
my environment:
ROM: slimICS
Kernel: Devil (but also tried semaphore and mnics and that changed nothing).
Player: PoerAmp + VoodooSound (but also tried stock player, with and without voodoo and problem persists).
I also tried different governors: smartass, ondemand, conservative.
I tried to set Min CPU freq to 200 MHz. Still nothing.
Only solution is to turn off GPS.
What do you think?

GPS receiver by itself is an odd cause for music skipping. I think the problem is with a background app you are using (which probably relies on the GPS). I too use my phone on CM9 for music with poweramp, but rarely hear music stopping or skipping.
I've had this problem with CodenameAndroid
I'm not sure but it seems to only happen when my screen is off
possibly when the phone is trying to deep sleep
in my case it also happens when the screen is on, and I do not use deep idle.
I'll investigate it in detail. Will do new installation, so I will try to restore apps one by one. It can take a little time.
APP - power amp, has a setting to increase the Audio buffer size (settings>audio engine>audio buffer size). Change from Auto to Large(+250ms).. this fixed the problem for me.
Other music apps may have this option
dlockhart, I use poweramp, and changing buffer size didn't help.
I will investigate further. Clear rom, so far even with gps on everything is ok.
It's a longshot, but is this only when you have a jack plugged, or also when playing from the phone speaker? A faulty jack or it not being properly plugged has actually caused something similar for me.

anything new in here? just have the same problem, but different phone. should be an software issue.
Poweramp worked!

Yeah this worked for me too on Desire Z (I know, wrong forum but having identical issues on ICS). You can also disable the media controls on the headset that seem to mess it up too! No more skipping, thanks for the tip!
i'm having this problem right now
I had it to. Try jellybean. Because of vsync (project butter) the cpu and gpu animate the screen instead of just cpu, cpu now has more time to handle everything else. My music has yet to skip on jellybean. Working really good.
Is this Error in jelly bean as well ?

Hi there,
Everytime when I'm listening some music using Apollo and I open the browser/Facebook/something else that requires some CPU power, the music stops for a moment, not even a second, maybe a quarter of a second.
Does someone know a solution? I have this on different ROMs.

hmm... never had this. Did you try to lift you CPU max GHz a bit? I always went from 1.000 standard to 1.305, worked great
I'll try that, any governer you advice?

Has any one else noticed an issue where the sound will be ahead of any video by about half a second? The problem becomes worse when using bluetooth audio. Normally with bluetooth audio the sound lags behind video, but on this phone, with or without bluetooth audio, the sound is always ahead of video.
I notice this most with pocket cast.

Sounds like you have PowerSave on.
Here is why I say this... I can watch videos with no lag. However I don't know about Bluetooth lagging, bc i dont use BT. I know the videos are not lagging, because I read lips everyday since my hearing is quite dull. I can hear the voice and see the word at the same time. Likely, what is happening, is that your internet connection (LTE,WiFi, or 3G if you have good 3G), is downloading and buffering the audio which gets processed via the network interface (no task offloading to the CPU on phones). Now, your video is being processed via the GPU/CPU. So either your voltages are too low, or your frequencies are too low, or you have powersave on which limits you to 1.1Ghz. Perhaps even too much cached data. Flash a new ROM, and then flash ElementalX kernel with 450Mhz GPU, and use 'run hot' as your thermal steps (youll see these options during your flash so dont worry if you dont know what im talking about).
Yes, i have noticed Netflix video sync issues when power save is enabled. It works fine when disabled...
