[Q] Will a 16gb Class2 microsd card work? - Nook Color General

I have one. But its a freaking class 2...
Will it work to root? I am thinking I am going to get a pile of nope...

Rooted ours with "Nooter 3.0" and a 2 gig class 2. Go
figure

Oops hit enter twice

It will work. I've used a 16gb Class 2 to do system flashes as well as class 2 cards for HoneyComb and various other flashing tools.

Which SD is the best?

Hi!
First, what is class 2 and class 6? Which is the best 2 or 6 in this case?
And which one of these two is the best:
Nokia MU 43 8 Gb MicroSDHC-11
or
Transcend microSDHC 8GB (Class 2) (TS8GUSDHC2)
- Class 2 specifikation - Support för Error Correcting Code (ECC)
Class mainly refers to read/write speed of the SD Card, the better the class the faster will be the data transfer speed but be careful with class 6 or class 8 cards on higher end memory like 8GB, 16GB or 32GB that has more tendency to give error. Class 4 is your best bet.

Hi! And thanks!
I did go with the:
Kingston Micro SDHC Kort (TransFlash) - 8GB...
Kingston kort (TransFlash) - 8GB Class 4 - inkl. adapter. - SDHC kompatibel - Read-/write hastighet 58x (8,8 MB / s) / 45X (6,5 MB / s)
Hope this is better than the one i had, did not know about classes at all.
if you are installing and running thing of the SD always go for the higher class card.
I have a class 6, 16GB SanDisk which I have had since they
were first available.
I have had no problems with it from day 1.

I cannot find a 16gb sandisk class 6 anywhere. I can't even find a class 6 microsd sandisk period. Where did you find it?

Sorry, it is a Transcend 16GB Class 6.
The Sandisk 16GB in other phone is a class 2.

I just bought a kingston 32gb class 6 micro sdhc but when ever i put it in my hd2 it just freezes up and as soon as I remove the card it works fine again. At first i though that it was a fake so I:
1)performed multiple tests,
2)reformated a 1000 times,
3)even putting 20gb of data just to make sure.
Turns out that it is authentic and it works perfectly on my girlfriend's htc BalckStone it also worked when I installed NAND (which i later removed due to insufficient memory).Ive been searching for days, I think its a windows mobile issue, any tips??
you formatted it 1000 times ?
btw i use a class 4 8gb and no problem except it sometime cannot boot android, i dunno if its the sd problem or android problem

[Q] MicroSD Question

Just picked up my NC at Best Buy about and hour ago. I have it at home charging and I'm going to go get a couple of MicroSD cards.
Should I go for the Class 10, or is Class 4/6 fast enough?
Unless your running something from the SD card then I'd recomend at least a class 6, you'll get around 11mb/s writing time, otherwise both the ROMs for the nook (Honeycomb & Nookie Froyo) both support installation to the emmc, you can just flash them to your system with Clockwork Recovery.
tldr; if you can find a class 6 or higher for cheap (I got an 8gb class 6 for $12 off amazon) get it, if not you'll be fine with anything truly now.
I am currently using a Class 4 8gb, and have no trouble running apps or even Froyo off the SD card,
Basically if you are just using the SD for apps or holding data, anything should work i would recommend at least class 4 or better, if you are going to be running the a custom rom off the SD while some class4 will work well. I would still recommend class 6 or class 10, Faster is always better.
Posting this from my new NC!
I stopped by Frys Electronics after dinner and picked up two Patriot 8GB Class 10 MicroSD cards. Getting to know the Nook a little before I root and start with the custom ROMs. Gonna load Froyo on one card and Honeycomb on the other so I can try out both flavors and see which one I like better.

[Q] Problem with Class 10 SD Card

I have a Nook Color Rooted with 1.1.
I put Honeycomb v4 on a Sandisk Class 2 8GB card with no problems booting and using.
I got an expensive Patriot Class 10 8GB card and put Honeycomb on it and it freezes at the small "android_" with the cursor flashing after android.
As an experiment, I put Froyo on the Class 10 card and it boots just fine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Patriots tend to have trouble with the whole booting from sdcard thing. To be honest, I think its quite the miracle that you got Froyo running off of it.
Is the problem the Class 10 or Patriot?
Any particular brand and Class you would suggest for optimum performance.
Just biding my time until I decide to put a newer Honeycomb on the internal memory. (Maybe wait for v5?)
I posted this in another thread but my 8gb class 10 Patriot is the only one that has worked well for me. I used a 16gb class 10 Wintec and that worked until v04 HC. I tried a 8gb class 4 Patriot and it was terrible slow.
PSF8GMCSDHC10 is the only card that works well in my NC

What microSD card is everyone using for booting 2.2/3.0?

I've been looking around Tiger Direct and NewEgg in search of a class 10 card to use but the only ones I find have warnings from previous buyers saying they don't achieve the rated speeds. I'm using a class 4 card right now with the 3.0 image and it's super slow to load. Can any of you link me the cards that you're using?
Thanks in advance

I am using a Transcend class 6 8GB from Newegg. Very fast...
Ditto. Transcend Class 6 8gb. work wonderfully (remember 16gb cards do nto work with froyo).
another vote for Transcend Class 6 8GB. And, stay away from Kingston Class4.
I'm using a Sandisk 16 gig Class 2 (that came with my Storm2) for Froyo.
I have a Sandisk 8gig Class 4 (purchased at Best Buy) for Honeycomb.
They perform great.
Beware of the CLASS rating.. it doesn't always tell the truth.
I have "generic" no-name made in japan Class 4 cards (an 8gig came with my Devour, and a 16 gig came with my X) that do not perform anywhere close to the two sandisks!!
Newegg, Patriot class 10 16GB.
Transcend here too. Class 6 4GB and 8GB cards.
Another happy Transcend 8GB Class 6 user here. Works well for Nookie Froyo and Honeycomb.
Thanks so much for all the feedback, guys I just ordered that 8GB Transcend Class 6 card since that seemed to get the most consensus here. Can't wait to try out Honeycomb with it!
im curious to know which one you bought and how well it works. let me know.
I bought the only Transcend 8gb Class 6 card I could find on the site, so I assume it's the right one. I'll post back here next week after I've received it and tested it out.
Hoping it's better than the Patriot Class 4 card I'm using now.. that thing is unbearable.

Is this true? I have a sandisk 16 gig I was going to use.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
I'm using a Wintec Filemate 16 gb class 10 in my droid x, running liberty rom on Froyo. No problems at all, and one of my apps measures 3.6mb/s write speed and 4.9mb/s read speed.. Don't know if that's sufficient or not but I haven't noticed any lag with it.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I'm using a Adata 8gb Class 6 card and enjoying Honeycomb.
That Honeycomb v4 build is pretty great, though I'm still having major issues with getting the Market to work. Other than that one quibble, its running fantastic - zippity too.
Transcend 8g from amazon class 6. No issues.
Tried Sandisk 4g class 4 very laggy.
Fry's has a Patriot 16GB Class 10 for $45 and it's in stock in the store near me (Austin, TX). Any comments on that? I seem to be seeing a mixed message on whether Froyo and/or Honeycomb will work with a 16GB card, though. I currently have a 4GB card that I'm using to hold a few things for my rooted stock B&N 1.1 firmware, but I'm interested in trying out Honeycomb and don't want to disturb that one.

I tried the Patriot 16gb C4 and it was slow. After 2 other 16gb would not work, I didn't want to return to Fry's and get another. The Patriot 8gb class 10 works like a charm.

Huh ? I never heard of this before. Is this true ?
purchased the 8Gb transcen because of this thread

Which microSD card is the MOST STABLE and FASTEST for using HoneyComb in SD card?

So I finally got HoneyComb working on my Nook Color (NC), residing in the microSD card using a Kingston 8GB Class 4. However, this card seems to be one of the slowest and using the HC in NC is almost unusable.
Example:
- Screen rotation takes 3-5 seconds
- Opening new app, depending on which app, can take 1-5 seconds
- Browsing certain website can make the screen unresponsive
- etc..etc..
I know that the HC version available in this website is probably still in "preview" or beta stage and some slowdown is expected, but I am not expecting it to be THIS bad. So I think the culprit is the microSD card itself.
However, I have tried many different MicroSD card and none works. I.e. it gives the "decrypt storage" error when booting up the NC. The cards I have tried are:
- Patriot 16GB Class 10
- A-Data 16GB Class 10
- Kingston 8GB Class 6
The ONLY one that works so far is Sandisk. Unfortunately, from SanDisk website, I do NOT SEE ANY card higher than Class 4.
Thus, can you recommend which is the MOST STABLE and FASTEST card? I.e. the ones that did NOT give slowdown per the examples I have given above.
i'm using sandisk 4 GB class 4 HC
nookie froyo, runs fantastic.
Class 10 cards apparently dont do too well. lots of people have had issues with those. class 6 should be OK, class 2 and 4 workk very nice.
Do you have recommendation for a good Class 6 MicroSD card? SanDisk don't sell anything higher than Class 4. I tried Kingston Class 6 and my Nook Color just spit on it...

I am currently running trancend 8gb class 6. Havent had any issues with froyo, HC or Cm7 booting or running.
I'm using a A-Data Class 6 16Gb card with no trouble. I do have 2 Kingston Class 4 32Gb cards and they have the issue with the decrypt garbage when you try to boot up HC from the sdcard. I've also got a Class 10 32Gb Wintec card which I have not had time to test out yet as I just got it the other day.
After a failed Kingston 16gb class 10, I got a SanDisk 8gb Class 4 and it's speedy enough. I notice very minimal slow down on some menus but I don't know if that's just the OS itself (being a preview after all)

That's the exact same card I have, and you did NOT experiences any of the slowness I posted in my 1st thread?
How drastic is the difference between Class 2 and Class 4?
I know that it says that it processes twice as fast, but is it noticeable? Can somebody give an example of when you can actually tell the difference? Playing music, watching movies, booting from microsd?
I have a Sansdisk class 2 8gb card that performs just as well as my class 10 Patriot 8gb (which has booted both HC and currently used as storage for my eMMC CM7 install.)
Sansdisk severely underrates their SD's and many other manufacturers overrate theirs. It is not a perfect rating system.
I would recommend going w/ sansdisk in whatever size you can afford. Class 2/4 will be plenty fast.
Before I switched back to Froyo I was running off the SanDisk 8Gb card from BestBuy - $20 - which I found very responsive. I think it is Class 4, but I could see any label on the card itself or the package.
The SD card speed was not the reason I switched back, it was the lack of other features in HC preview. I can't wait for an AOSP release
8GB Cards
I currently have 2 8GB microsds that I switch between:
-Transcend 8GB Class 6 running Honeycomb from Amazon. Tested it with h2wtest and got 16MB/s write and 14MB/s read. (Not sure if that is a typo on the tool or not and it's supposed to be bits instead of bytes, but that's what it says).
-Sandisk 8GB Class 2 running Nookie Froyo. Tested at 14MB/s write and 18MB/s read.
Both cards run their respective ROMs well, so it seems to jibe with what chisleu said about Sandisk underrating their cards. I could also be limited by the USB adapter I was using, but I had another adapter that was limiting it to 4MB/s both ways.
