I've dealt with many ROM's on my OG Droid so I'm confident in my ability to root the nookcolor. However, one this eludes me so far. The SD card.
Do I need to buy a small SD card that has the ROM I want on it which the nook will always boot from? Or is it a one time deal where the nook will load from the SD card and keep it in internal storage. I've done some searching but I haven't been successful, obviously. So I apologize for starting "that" thread if the answer already exists.

I just ordered a Nook Color from eBay with the $50 off... happy yes I am!
I've been with Android since the G1, now I have a droid... how come flashing ROMS and SD cards are so different? You have to put it internally on the Nook instead of on the SD card? Flashing off SD card causes problems? CWR doesn't work? Can anyone explain? It seems much tougher than my droid, just putting the file on my sd card then going to recovery and hitting update, or same with the gTab or Adam.
Unlike most phones, flashing a majority of ROMs (not all) for the NC wipes the Recovery -- ie, wipes it off the device.
So you create a Recovery SD card (the NC auto-boots into it) and then flash ROMs just like you would for a phone. Then take out the SD card when done with Recovery.
It wipes only the recovery correct? Not anything on the sd card? Ill search up how to make partition for recovery sd. Thanks.

Yeah, it'll wipe everything on the NC only, and not touch the SD card.
Here's the thread for creating a 3.0.0.6 Recovery SD Card (needed for CM7 Gingerbread ROM):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959240
See post #19 for detailed instructions.
For FroYo I believe you need to use 3.0.0.5, found elsewhere.
just ordered my NC off ebay too. i'm reading up all i can as fast as i can. coming from an evo where wiping is too easy, this is going to be a bit more complicated, i can't wait!!!
More complicated, maybe, but also much safer since you basically cannot brick an NC... No matter how badly you screw up the internal flash, you can always boot from SD to fix things.
I bought 3 Nook Colors yesterday and rooted every one of them and installed HoneyComb on one, all in less that 2 hours start to finish including downloading images and making the SD card. I made one SD card with CWR with images for the stock ROM, CyanogenMod 7 and HC eMMC v4. It all works flawlessly. This thing really is simple to manipulate. I had more trouble making a gold card and rooting my HTC Inspire!
Well I want to chime in on this too now because I'm new to this as well. What are the advantages/disadvantages of nookie froyo on the sd card vs flashing a rom to the internal?

well sd cards are slow and internal memory(eemc) is fast
if you install froyo/cm7/HC on your eemc it will run much faster vs running from sd card, running from sd card is good though if you want to try out a rom without losing your current setup
alright so i rooted out my nook color and now i would like to get NOOKIE FROYO 2.2 on my device. I have read everything but there is one question that i have that no one seems to put out there. And yes i am new to rooting etc. but rooting was damn easy and looks like loading nookie froyo to sd card is just as easy.
Question (probably dumb) is running the bootable sd card on my already rooted nooko color alright?
2) and it is really as simple as writing the nookie froyo image to the sd card plugging it into the nook and rebooting that simple?

1, as far as I know running roms off sd card is very safe, rooted or not rooted.
2, Yes... burn nookie froyo on sd card then turn on NC.
Yes, running from the SD card is safe.
I second what Pinoy8125 wrote.
1. Running off the SD card is safe and easy even with your interal memory being rooted. Look at it this way, you can try different images just by swapping different sd cards. Try the 6.8, 6.7, HC, etc.
2. Yep, just burn the image onto the SD card. Expand the 4th partition if the image size and the card size differ. This will allow you to recover the lost space. Turn on the Nook and see what you go.
I am getting very nice performance running Froyo 6.8 off of the SD card. I ran into micro sdhc compatibility issues which caused booting as well as performance issues. I have another thread out there on this issues. Awaiting people's feedback on this.

Now... I need help...how to go about expanding the 4th partition to recover lost space? I don't have a single idea on how to do this. Please explain it in details
I've seen this asked once before without an answer. I know it's an odd question. But is it possible to dual boot from a single SD card?
In other words, two totally different installations on a single SD card + the Nook kept at stock.
I know I can root the Nook directly. But if at all possible I'd prefer to keep it at stock. Nookie Froyo has been running great from my SD, so I'd like to just stick with it and not touch the Nook itself.
At the very worst I can pick up a new SD and swap them out if it's not possible.
I was going to root my Nook with autonooter 3.0 and a 2GB Class 2 generic card that came with a cellphone, but then read somewhere that you should have above class 6.
1. Is it really not safe to root a nook with this card? I was under the impression that the card class only mattered for running the ROM from the SD(which I already tried, but got stuck booting up the first time, both with CM7 and froyo). And I've rooted a couple of ZTE Blades with this card without any problems.
2. If I run CM7 directly from an SD, it is possible to use the rest of the space on the SD that is over? Any guides?
3. Is it possible to restore an SD you've made bootable to a normal SD? Any guides?
1. :/ Don't trust it, class 2 is enough even to use rom on it (I used a 16Go class2 to boot on HC and had no lag, except lags due to the lack of native drivers)
2 & 3. Just have a look in the dev section you'll find what you need (even I highly suggest to use CM7 on nand)
They are some tutos and direct sd images prepared by nice devs ^^
1. Have you tried CM7 or Froyo from a class 2 card? Cause neither worked on my(froze when booting up the first time). But most importantly, if this card is bad/slow, can I harm my nook by trying to root it with this card?
3. I only found one link(which I can't post since my post count isn't high enough...) regarding restoring an SD-card back to normal
where it tells you to download HPs tool(HPUSBFW.exe) but it doesn't work on my computer. Tells me I don't have admin rights even though I have. Anybody know a workaround or any other tool I can use?
Bump
1. Could anybody just confirm that it's safe to use an inferior SD-card while rooting. Don't have any others around now. All I need to know is whether I can do any permanent damage by using a generic class 2 card when rooting the Nook(I'm going to root it, not run the ROM from the SD, since that didn't work).
2. How to I restore a SD-card so that it works as normal?

1, Assuming that "inferior" SD card doesn't mean some dodgy card with corruption and bad blocks etc., it should not matter what card you use. No you won't do "any permanent damage by using a generic class 2 card when rooting the Nook".
2. Reformat your SD card before you do anything. If you're using Win, use this formatter:

1. Don't think it's corrupted, just ran comp in DOS comparing two 1.3gb files(the entire card is 2gb) and it seemed fine. Or is there a better way of checking your SD-card?
2. Thanks, that's was just what I was looking for!
Have been able to root and unlock as well as install CWM v6.0.3.6. Currently running CM10.2, but my question is probably applicable to all of the ROMs.
I have a 16GB micro SD card that I've used in several phones, including my most recent Motorola Photon. I'm curious what everyone would recommend as to formatting the card and "starting fresh" if I wanted to dedicate the whole SD card to the phone (i.e., I will never remove it). What I mean specifically is that I want to dedicate the card to "add" to the 8GB that's already on the phone.
I guess what I'm asking is whether there is a way for the card to be formatted so that the Atrix thinks it's additional memory without realizing that it is an "external" SD card.
I would prefer to completely format the card as it's been used in other phones, and I want to re-install CM10.2 or maybe try ProBAM. I'm guessing generally the steps are:
1. format card based on what advice I get here
2. flash new ROM to phone
Update:
1. My phone memory was "full" even though I had very few apps. Turned out there were a bunch of "bp-dumps" being created--I presume they are like memory dumps when there is an error. I reflashed with Probam and so far things are okay.
2. I found this article that explains why one may to dedicate some card memory to SD-ext and a step-by-step of how to format. I note that I had to reboot once in between for the option of partitioning the SD-ext to show up:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-help-how/193297-everything-sd-cards-discussion-how.html
But it doesn't seem that Probam shows any change to the memory. I may have to reflash it a couple of times, as one of the posts suggested.
If anyone has anything to chime in with, I'd be grateful.
