I posted my predicament in the General forum about my PC frying my Captivate.
Well to sum it up, my pc has been frying usb devices left and right. Mainly it is killing the usb chipset controllers on the devices. This now means my phone can no longer mount to my pc in any way. If I plug it in, I get an immediate "usb device not recognized."
I want to take this to AT&T and see if they can do anything, but of course my phone is rooted and has the bloatware removed.
Since I can't get my phone connected to my pc in any way, I obviously can't use Odin to reflash my phone to stock and I can't use One-Click to unroot either.
Is there any update.zip file out there that will reinstall the att bloatware and get rid of root/superuser? I don't have any hacked firmware or custom roms on my phone as all I did was root and get rid of the att apps.
I simply need a way to put the att apps back on my phone and get rid of root/superuser WITHOUT the use of a pc.
Thanks a bunch guys!

Off the top of my head, I see two possibilities.
1) Do it by hand. Find copies of the original apps and install them, then look at what the root update.zip script does and undo it.
2) get someone to make a stock nandroid backup and restore it to your phone.

DG's zip has busybox and superuser included, you need to remove those files first on your pc. If your pc has a card reader you can use it to transfer the file back to your sd card after it's edited.

Use android terminal emulator the same way you would adb to copy the .apk files to /system/app.
Or... you can use es file explorer with system mounted and copy them that way. Then reboot. As for unroot.... Idk what to tell you, I don't have that phone..
Also, I would recommend testing it on another pc. Yours is likely stupid, not frying the usb ports. If this were so, it shouldn't charge either.

The usb ports are 100% frying the chipsets on usb devices. I have a network adapter, a flash drive, external hard drive, and a brand new flash drive that all have a burnt chip after being in the usb for longer than 10 seconds. Most will still power on when plugged into another pc but they just cant interface with the pc's with the chipsets being fried, it has no way to properly communicate.
I've tested my phone and all the fried flash drives on 4 pcs at this point.
since you are still rooted, to reinstall the at&t apps look into wireless adb. it will allow you to push apps over a wifi network.

Like I said the zip file has SU in it, remove it first before you use it if I assume you plan on returning your captivate. If you want I can edit that file for you and PM you the link where to download the file on your phone.

If that zip can give me the bloatware back and then all I have to do is remove superuser and busybox then I'll be one step closer then where I am now.

okay im trying to root my phone i already downloaded the driver to sync to my cpu and the downloaded the rooting file change it to update and copied it to my phone. i downloaded the sdk file and extracted it to my c drive as c:/androidsdk. i did everting it ask me to opened up the command promt and entered cd first changedirectory space the entered c:/androidsdk/tools as it tells me to but says this the program cant find the path specified..can anyone tell me wat im doin wrong and y its not bein recognized thanks in advanced
Re-check your path. When I installed it looked like this:
c:\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools
YMMV
PS ... note they are backslashes not forward slashed in the path
Q: still having a problem rooting my captivate
i switched it up to the backlash and it still saying no path detected...it wont enen let me root my phone saying file is not there i downloaded the root file extract it to my c drive n renamed it update i got windows 7 i then copied it to my phone...downloaded the android sdk file extracted it to my c drive.opened up the command and put in the codes and it tells me it cant find the path..am i downloading the file wrong extracting it to the wrong file??? plz help
I do it the lazy way, take the tools folder and copy it directly to C:
So it would be,
cd C:\tools
adb blah blah blah
That's an easier path to remember.

That works too ...
My point was it's clear the OP has the path wrong. Actually finding the tools folder in Windows Explorer is obviously the first step.
Also, anything he is trying to push via ADB has to be in the tools folder as well if memory serves.
Of course there is an easier way to root ...

Don't know what to tell you. Following the instructions in the post I linked to above is the easiest way I know of how to root, and has worked every time I've tried it.
If you can get into download mode, then maybe try re-flashing to stock with Odin One Click and see if that helps any. Or re-install your drivers.
So, you cant even copy and paste from your pc to phone via usb mass storage?
Use your phone, go to dev section, find unleash the beast or super rooter extreme, download either and place the update.zip on the root of your sd card using My Files or whatever. Reboot your phone into recovery and reinstall packages. There, youre rooted. Dont forget to delete the update.zip if you plan to use CWM.

You can use Sideload Wonder Machine or the Android SDK to sideload.
With the Android SDK, you just put whatever apk you want to load into the 'tools' folder and use the adb install filename.apk command.
Like i said, check the dev section for SRE or unleash the beast. One update.zip that does it all, root, bloatware removal, sideloading, etc.

What startngate said. Here in the captivate forum there is android developement, do a search for super rooter or unleash the beast. All the steps to run it are there. Works really well if you just want a stock rom with root and some other goodies. If you want custom roms i encourage you to read through the threads before doing anything.

I use this one to keep it simple.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
And I think it has the update.zip file in it... so if that application doesn't work.. you can just install the update.zip into your sdcard - reboot into recovery and install update.zip from there.
You don't need the SDK - just need to make sure your phone can be seen by your computer. I've used it on both an XP and Win7 64-bit machine at home and it works great.
To "side-load" applications - you can use the wonder machine... or place the *.apk file on your SDCard and use MyFiles or your favorite file explorer to browse to it and it should install just fine.
I'm testing my phone out with a stock ROM - and I'm rooted/sideload avail and even have a lagfix installed with all of my apps installed in under 15-20 minutes... it is a pretty simple process to root this thing nowdays
Hi,
I'm unable to install sideloaded APKs. This is what I did:
1. Ran the 'NookColor Tools'; checked 'Allow Non-Market Apps'; and rebooted.
2. Copied the apk to SD card (in a new folder My Files > 'Apps').
3. Installed Astro File Manager from the Market.
4. Navigated to the location of the APK; clicked on it; selected 'Open App Manager'.
5. Clicked 'Install'.
Says 'Install Blocked - Installation of downloaded apks is not supported'
I must be doing something wrong, any help would be great!
Thanks
Try unchecking the box for Allow Non-Market Install, reboot, check box, reboot, should work now. I had to do that after autonootering.
Good luck!

I'm unable to uncheck that either. After unchecking, if I re-open NookColor tools either instantly or after rebooting, it remains checked! But still, apps won't install.
I'm in the same boat .. no matter what i can't get that box to stay unchecked
I had the same problem, try unchecking, rebooting, I think it will be checked again then when it reboots just uncheck and recheck it (no reboot). That worked for me. I'm glad too cuz I though I was going to have to go through all that adb bs lol.

I had similar issues after using autonooter from 12/25. After playing with nook tools I gave up unsuccessfully. After a reboot I noticed it was working. For the life of me I can not figure out if the reboot did it or something else but it is working now. I was ready to go back to the old method of manually editing the database using adb.

You shouldn't, I've rebooted a few times and have had no problems.
Here's what i've done to get around this.
Appmonster on my phone. Download and backup the app on my phone.
copy the app onto nook somehow, i use dropbox.
then i use rootexplorer to copy, change from r/o to r/w, paste the apk, and then install it.
So far working well, trillian, amazon, and google reader. Not sure about the potential of installing versions of apps that could brick or screw up the nook.
Laptop not Recognizing Nook after installing ADB
I tried the boot over and over, but it did not work. So I followed the instructions on installing SDK and ADB and was able to install applications. This meant replacing the Nook Driver. I was not able to install the files via the USB cable, but used ADB wireless instead.
Now I can no longer see the Nook when I connect it by USB to my laptop, running Windows 7. I used to see the Nook as my J drive and the SD Card as the K.
I plugged it into my Desktop and and able to see both.
I am guessing this has something to do with the Driver on the Laptop (which I replaced following the instructions in the video). Is there a way that I can get my laptop to see the Nook and the SD card again without losing the ability to install files?
Thanks
Issue 1: I'm trying to install ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, MyFiles.apk in order to have the stock clock. I keep getting the error "Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES]" when i try to use the command adb install (any of the 3).apk. I have also tried "adb push" which doesn't seem like a valid command. I tried moving the 3 apk files to my sd card on the phone and using "installer" and "eoeAppinstaller" from the market and these fail as well. Any more suggestions? I really like this di11igaf's ROM, but I cannot stand the new alarm ( i like the gradual volume increase of the stock). I have tried a couple of market clocks, but they just didn't work for me. Thank you very much in advance.
Issue 2: If I use CWM and choose Reboot into Recovery i get the following:
Android system recovery <3e>

Enter OK Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip

At this point I can use the volume buttons to scroll up and down, but the power button will not select anything. The only thing I can do is remove the battery and boot the phone back up, which then takes me into CWM recovery v2.5.1.0. I was able to install the di11i add on, but I don't think that I'm supposed to be pulling the battery to get to this point.
Thanks again and sorry about the long post.
Im no expert on this type of stuff but I use di11i roms and I just transfer apk's to the root of the phone through the regular mass storage mode and use root explorer for the rest.Havent had any problems yet.
As for issue 2 is the package a .zip file? If not that may or may not be the problem.
From my own personal experience the 3dapp isn't sign so I can't install it too
System apps are best copied manually into the /system/app folder using app like root explorer. Make sure the folder is in r/w mode.

It is a zip file and it installed. What concerned me was the process. Should it have frozen up like that and forced a battery pull? Nothing I've read leads me to believe that was proper behavior of the CWM.

I don't have that directory. Are you creating it on the phone and then putting the files into it? I may have not been clear on what I am trying to do. I am trying to do what was posted in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11207089&highlight=clockpackage#post11207089 posts #2515
I just looked into exactly what you were talking about and I got it figured out.It wasnt installing for me either but this is what I did and it works now.
Through mass storage mode I copied the 3 files to the root of the card.
Then I moved the files to the app folder which is inside the system folder.
I use root explorer for the moving.
When you move them into the app folder its gonna ask to overwrite say yes.
After you get everything moved it will work if you go to the app in the drawer.I never actually installed anything but did an overwrite.

u cannot see it in my files. u need to have root access, and something like root explorer.
So it looks like I could have just copied and pasted the files from the sdcard/Clock folder I placed them in to the /system/app folder using Super Manager. I swear I tried that and it failed before I went through all the crappy steps below. Oh well.
Ok this is going to sound pretty cheap, but I didn't want to pay the ~$4.02 for an ap that I was going to use three times. I did find another way. I used Super Manager and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877316&highlight=installing+apk post #3.
So for any other cheapskates out there.
1. Install Super Manager on phone
2. Install ADB on pc
3. Connect phone to pc and copy the three files ClockPackage.apk, Gallery3D.apk, and MyFiles.apk to the sd card. (I just drag and dropped in windows explorer)
4. Use Super Manager to move to /system/app/ and rename the existing file Gallery3D.apk (I renamed it to Gallery3D.old)
5. Use adb to copy the 3 files from the directory in which you originally placed them on the phone to /system/app/
in adb type:
adb shell
su
(accept the prompt on your screen)
cd /sdcard/whereveryoustuckfile
cp blahblahblah.apk /system/app/ (the red from Pirateghost).
6. Reboot
The clock and alarm work fine, but I cannot get Daily briefing option in alarm to work. I get a FC. I did install the "apk add on pack for 5.6" post 3 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897416 , but I dont think Daily Briefing was included in that. Any suggestions? And one last thing - what is the di11iBrowserfix.zip from post 3 of the thread above for? Thanks again to all who contributed.
I got the daily briefing working. Everything is almost perfect, but I would like two things still.
1. Is there anyway to change the tune that is played when you have smart alarm selected? I have a different tone selected, but I think once you select smart alarm it defaults to that new age tone.
2. My alarm goes off, I stop it, but then I have to unlock it before I see the daily briefing. Can anyone think of a way to have the phone unlock when I turn off the alarm. I know it is so insignificant, but it used to do that when it was stock and it was pretty cool.
Come one guys and gals - don't make me figure this one out by myself j/k but seriously I have surprised myself already by getting this far and I really don't have skill or knowledge for the last two things. I'm learning though....slowly.
Thread etiquette
Did I do something wrong here? I got some really quick responses to my questions before, but nothing on my latest. I ask this next question with all seriousness - should I have started a new thread since it's kind of a new topic? No worries either way, I just want to post in the the most effective way. Thanks. BTW, my phone is working great. I'm getting ready to install 6.0 GPS is a little screwy - often has me west of my location by about 30 meters by I attribute that to the phones hardware. Other than that I have no complaints (except for the lame smart alarm tune)

Nope. Get the CWM flashable zip, and copy to ur sdcard. Then go to CWM recovery console, and install this zip. Reboot.
But, please take a nandroid backup, and try to avoid OC kernels if u r unsure ur phone can handle it. Phones freeze when tried to oc beyond their capability.

First if you don't have adb you need to get it. Easiest way is by downloading SuperOneClick. DO NOT run superoneclick, you only want adb from it.
Next download GingerBreak.apk made by Chainfire, it can be found here
Next launch from command prompt move to where adb is c:/path/to/adb/ and then run the following command
adb install /path/to/apk/GingerBreak.apk
It will install it, next on your phone in your app menu browse to and click on GingerBreak. Click root. Your phone will reboot and you will have root .
I have personally tested on a stock 1.5.7 and it works!
I have not personally tested on 1.83, but it has been confirmed by many. Same procedure applies
If you want side loading use Gladenable.
So to follow up.
Code:
1. Get ADB
2. adb install GingerBreak.apk
3. Run GingerBreak
4. Root
5. If needed run Gladenable to enable sideloading if needed.
6. Done!
All credit goes to the GingerBreak team & Chainfire, all did was apply there work.
Or you could do this, Thanks kennethpen .

nice.....thanks
thats great news for now and for the future xD
Nice.. Very Very Thanks..
This works at Korea Atrix MB860(SK Telecom).
Does this work for phones that were never rooted/have sideloading disabled still?
You can always sideload using Android Sideload Wonder Machine.
Oh, nice. That tool is way better than the other one I have...
Also, the OP doesn't mention needing an SD card installed but the other thread mentioned needing one. So do I need an sd card in?

Yes, you need an SD card (not the internal one). As best I've been able to tell so far, vold can only be exploited with an external SD card mounted.
Because of the risk of formatting the card, its recommended you either back yours up first, or use some old 2GB junker. You can get these in the impulse buy isle at your local grocery store.

Yes this is a full rooting method, afterwards you would need to enable sideloading through say GladiRoot.

Just download the .exe that I made (it is in the OP).
So we don't need to flash the SBF in order to root now???
I have a completely unmodded Stock Atrix running 1.5.7, and this will allow me to root and do all the cool root type things that cool kids do these days?

Nice! Just a suggestion to make it clear in the title that this roots system version 4.1.57 and does not require any sort of SBF flash. Maybe even update the Gladroot original post to link to this one?
Good . I have MB861. It's success. Thanks jug6ernaut
