Why flash ROMS? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After getting a new hero and using my nandroid from old phone it occurred to me, why not distribute a working backup rather than a rom to flash.
This may not be the best way but if a dev flashed their rom, skipped sign in, made sure everything was functional, then made a backup and distributed that, wouldnt that cut down on people getting mixed results post flash?

Two top reasons, why ROM vs. Nandroid backups...
1. Recovery dependency
2. Customization

1. Specify recovery used or make multiple backups per recovery.
2. Backup would contain basic rom, leaving customization to be done after restore.
After flashing rom, gapps, black market, I always backup then start making changes incase I delete something I'm not supposed to.
Example: lets say I flash my rom and gapps. I start my phone, skip sign in, begun fumbling through menus making sure I get no FCs, etc. Check too see if GPS is working, sms/mms, youtube, camera, etc. At this point everything works and I make a backup. My assumption is that if someone else uses that backup, everything will work for them as well. (google was never linked due to skipping sign in).
Not trying to prove you wrong, just expressing my thoughts until they themselves are proven incorrect.

Both of you guys are Right in a way, and I kind of had a little Idea from Reading all the Posts!
What if a Developer/User "Whoever" was to Upload a Nand Backup But with a John Doe Google Account Just for Nand Purposes, "Basically for Anyone who wants to Download it"
I Read *SO MANY* Posts where Users Have a Hell of a Time Trying to get certain Roms Installed...
So now let's use me for Instance, Say I was having a Issue with Installing a ROM where it just Wouldn't Work for whatever Reason. Actually lets say I was a Noob with Some or Little to Any Experience and Instead as a Alternative I Used John Doe's Nand Backup just to get it Booted!!
Here's the Catch...
From there Meaning once it Boots, and Correct me if I'm Wrong! Wouldn't I be Able to just Pull the Battery and Do a Full Wipe....
Data/Cache/DalvikCache and Reboot back to the Same ROM Minus the John Doe?
Meaning Now I'd be able to Start the ROM Fresh and Replace the Temporary John Doe Account with My Own Email.gmail.com/Password, Then from there have the Option to Create Another Backup with My Own Customizations!
Remember like I said, Although I Usually I Don't have any Issues during a ROM Install, But Realistically That Doesn't mean Everyones is as Fortunate, So this Might, Could be a Alternative for Whoevers Willing to Try it!!
If Anything I Said, Better Yet more or less Suggested is Wrong... Please Correct Me, But the Above is Based on the Best of my Knowledge!

ok so using a John Doe account wont work. Once you sign in, that account can only be removed by reset.
Ok so lets just get these out there for people to try out.
Below is a download link to 2 nandroid backups.
The two recoverys used were CW 2.5.0.7 and RA-Recovery-1.6.2.
Download here.
MegaUpload
DO NOT FLASH ZIP!!!
Unzip file, inside your should find two folders. Use the correct file for your recovery.
As always, Nandroid backup first.
Perform a full wipe.
Restore downloaded backup. (In RA-Recovery, if you get a error message, go Here to see instructions on how to restore using adb.)
Reboot
(Click Market to sign in.)
Test away!!
Once booted you should be running aospCMod, dark horse theme, black market, blue and black facebook, black MIUI Music, LauncherPro (themed widgets if you have unlock code), Black Youtube.
Apps you will NOT see in drawer are camera, gallery, file manager, dev tools. And prob some others, cant remember atm.
Thank you in advance for helping me test this out.

A similiar method is used on certain phones. The dev can make a nand or copy system and data into .img or .tar files. The recovery then unpacks the images into the correct directory.

I'm using this thread as the testing method. Once we confirm the advantages of it and that it works well, I will start threads in dev and theme forums. Not sure if I will need permission from creaters of the roms to do so but I will look into that. Eventually I'd like to have a few people helping to get most roms on there and help keep them updated.
So for now do the testing and report back on the results. Also try the CW backup on earlier and later versions of CW.

so some of these questions might be stupid ill admit it. how big of a chance is there that i brick my phone trying to root it. and if im planning to get a bigger sd card should i get it before i use my original sd card and root it. also if i ever need to how hard is it to put the phone back to sprints os. and anyone one with good advice im open ears guys.
General thread, just for future reference. As far as bricking your chances are pretty slim, just make sure not to flash a GSM radio.

rooting your phone: pretty much no chance. don't hold me to this though, if you somehow manage to do it. even if you do screw it up, the RUU(the thing that puts you back to sprint's os) can easily be run from a computer and it'll pretty much fix your phone.
most important thing: NEVER flash a gsm radio. those things will really mess up your phone because it'll never turn on after you do that.
about the sdcard... it shouldn't really matter which one you use unless you're using apps2sd.
Hey thanks what about the micro sd card thing

With sd cards, there is a 'class' number. The higher number you have, the better it is. I'd go with class 6 or higher. And if you just stay in the CDMA forum, you shouldn't have any problems. Just don't flash any roms or radios that dont mention CDMA
Once again you rock bro thanks I was gonna use the steps that were posted under the rooting cdma hero for Windows does that one look like it would be good for someone like me to follow

Fresh2.0http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=643034 or Damage Controlhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=656690
I prefer fresh rom
Basically it's just trial and error. It's pretty easy to flashthe ROM's so you can keep changing them until you find something you like..
When you flash any ROM you will usually need to wipe your phone and this will cause anything not backed up will be lost. i make sure I save all contacts as a google type. That way when you flash a new ROM and you sign into google again all your contacts will be restored. There are several apps in the market to back up apps you have downloaded.
But before you do that, boot into recovery...hold down home and power to turn on the phone and do a nandroid. Then mount your sdcard and save the files inside the nandroid folder on your sdcard to your computer. This should be your nandroid of the original 1.5 ROM.
on the roms when it says to save to root folder is that the same as the nandroid folder cause when i mount my sd there is no folder that labeled root
ha im retarted didnt read it good enough you answered that already. on my contacts list if the person has google next to there name does that mean is saved to google and where on google can i see them. i wasnt told or shown anything when i got this phone im sure this stuff is basic
heres a question: If I were to root and do a custom ROM, how assured am I that when sprint releases 2.1, I can do that upgrade?

[ROM]Touch_of_Photons (BETA) v1

First and foremost I take no credit for anything contained in this ROM. I have taken bits and pieces from various ROMs I like and rolled my own.
The base is Binny's stock ROM.
LauncherPro from unrevolved by ozzeh
Has Both HTC and Android Music apps (in case someone, like me, prefers the old one)
Rosie and All Rosie widgets removed
WiFi Tether
TouchFlo port from Samsung included (choose launcher for yourself)
Again, all credit to the Devs listed above. I am no Dev myself, only a chef cooking up something to my own liking and thought I would share.
Anybody wanna test for me?
Download here
Installation...
Copy TouchOfPhotons-v1.zip to your SDCARD and reboot into Clockwork recovery. Then Install Zip and Choose Zip from SDCARD.
Be sure to take a Nandroid Backup and WIPE FIRST!
So far everything seems to be working fine for me...WiFi, BT, etc...
I would recommend Hydra's Undervolt with Wireless-N kernel here. This just needs to be installed like any other zip using Clockwork recovery.
Also I would recommend the MultiTouch Keyboard DANESHM90 managed to pull from the Droid-X here. This can be installed with Astro or an equivalent of your choice.
Thanks to all in the community. I am glad to be a part of it!
UPDATE.... Kernel link above may not work consistently so I am attaching the zip.
For those requesting it, I am attaching the TouchFlo Launcher. Just install via Astro or similar.
UPDATE - 7/7 --- Thanks to bowtiedeuce for pointing out the fix scuccia found for the Facebook constantly syncing issue. I am attaching that patch here (full credit to him, of course). Just install it like any other zip from your sdcard using clockworkmod recovery (install over your current setup, no wipe) and it should resolve the sync issue. Future releases will not have this bug.

Another would be requesting to get the 2.1 lock screen and not the HTC one... Thanks! Awesome work, keep it up!
each time i download this file ROM and i try to install it, i get an error when it is trying to write to BOOT that says E: No Room Left on Device, failure at Line 394. Has anyone else seen this and if so, have they figured out how to fix it? I have wiped the boot partition and completely formated my whole system. Still the same error, i also redownloaded the file 3 times and still the same issue.

to clarify it is giving me an error saying "Error writing to Boot"

IF anything, I would says possibly the kernel (based on the error he says he got), but I would recommend you use the kernel attached in the OP anyway, so....
Really I don't know why you two are getting those errors and not the others who are testing, though. You are wiping before you install, right? Always the best practice: Nandroid Backup + Wipe.

flashing themes issues

okay i did a quick search n didnt find much. so im having issues flashing themes. i tried to flash two themes over CM6 and i made sure they were exactly for that rom. what happens is that i get a boot loop, i start up the phone and get crazy force closes or when the rom starts up, nothing is themed except maybe some icons. what could be causing this? i always wipe everything before i flash a rom so that cant be the issue. any other ideas you guys can give me to check what could be the issue?
**also on a sorta on topic question. whenever i wipe and then flash a froyo rom, i always flash the radio first. is this necessary for everytime i flash a froyo rom?**
Zip files are funny, if you have a bad connection or a interruption in service sometimes all the data isn't downloaded. Sounds like the data's corrupt. Downloading from the updaters will give you that issue. Try a fresh download, and no you don't have to update your radio everytime you flash a rom, most roms come with updated radio, and if not the most devs will specify and provide it for you. And if so flash radio first to support the rom. If your already on FROYO there's no need to keep flashing radios.

Once you get a fresh download check the size of the file and make sure the files complete. If a file takes a really long time to download and transfer to your temp folder then most times you'll have problems with it, also if the file downloads too fast, like right after you click save and then you hear " pling" download complete and you know the file was a pretty decent size and it downloads too fast, something wrong. I used to have problems with alot of themes, because I had a messed up router & my modem used to act up to. I suggest when you get a fresh download, do a wipe in recovery and re-flash your rom, then the theme. Don't worry about your apps they will automatically reinstall on FROYO. Or if you have a nandroid then just wipe, restore your nandroid, then flash theme. Remember Nandroid is your friend. Happy flashing

Three final questions before 1st ROM Flash?

I just watched the 3 part You Tube Video on Flashing Cognition ROM to Captivate,I need to ask 3 things. First the video shows the One Click Root method though computer. I already have my root rooted with z4root app is this OK. After the new ROM is on the guy went to Market and got Ti Backup and he side loaded it can't you just load Std. way though Market?( I have the Paid Ver. of Ti Backup) Third question on the video he stated to use "restore All Apps with Data" but written on the Screen says to use "Restore Missing apps with data",which is it? I hope this my last question but I really want to sure of what I am doing before I try this.
Thanks for help
Would have been better suited in the General forum, but..
Rooting with z4mod = fine.
Getting TiBu from market = ...fine.
Restore all apps with data = literally restores all of your backups and data
Restore missing apps with data = restores apps that are not installed on the phone, ignoring ones that are installed on the phone.
Best to ask in Q&A section, but I'll still help you out.
1. Yes, that's fine. The way you root it doesn't matter, as long as it's rooted.
2. Not sure why he'd go to the Market to get it then sideload, but yes, you can get it straight from the Market, but make sure you know how to keep your donate version after a flash, as flashes (usually) wipe /data.
3. Restore Missing Apps with Data.
Thanks guys I really wasn't sure where to Post this. Yes I have Backup of Ti Backup folder on my computer.
Thanks again

[NEEDED] 6.893 100% stock backup

Does anyone have a backup of 6.893?
Typically I am very diligent, but somehow I forgot to make a backup of stock.
I have not switched to any other update. I have read through everything thoroughly and I apologize for failing to follow instructions. With 5 android devices and multiple flashes I have never missed this before. And I realized it as soon as I flashed TH3ORYS rom
From what I gather the easiest and most effective way to get back on track is to flash a stock 6.893 rom make a backup and move on from there.
I appreciate anyone's help!
I am also open to using this thread or creating one in delopment to post the stock roms of every version.

Not entirely true. His system will be back to 5.5.886, but his kernel/radio will be his previously upgraded 5.6.893. He is off the upgrade path until he gets the matching system file of 5.6.893. Only then can he continue updating. I just went through this exact thing, used the one step recovery, but went back to .886 and had to beg to find someone to send me a CWR back up of their 5.6.893, which got me back on track.
Oh yeah...nevermind. I completely thought you were wanting stock not the ota. That's what I get for speed reading.

I'm afraid I dont, I got back to 5.6.893 then immediately upgraded to 5.7.893 and backed that up, since .6.893 was no good to me any more. I'm sorry.
Someone out there has to have this!
....I hope

Give this a try. (Can't post links yet)

I'm thinking you will only need steps 1 and 2.
Hope it helps!!

Wont it fail because I'm not coming from stock? And if I go all the way back it wont work because ill end up with a hybrid?

I'm in the same situation. Yes, all attempts to upgrade fail because our sys filed don't match our radio. I need this nandroid as well.

Giving someone a backup made on your device or restoring a backup made on someone else's device is an extremely foolhardy proposition. You are cloning the Android_id from one device to the other, which means that apps that use it as an identifier will push and pull data from both devices without any intervention from the unknowingly affected user.
system img
correct me if im wrong but, all we need is the system img right because im stuck with a hybrid
Does anyone know if restoring my 5.893 back up will work, or create a hybrid? I ask because I think it is the same radios?

If anyone is just now rooting and starting to make their way up the update ladder I would greatly appreciate it if you would make a backup of 6.893 and send it to me. Thank you!

Check your pms and please don't share in case there is some of my data still left in the backup. just download all the files and put them in a folder and put in your clockwork backup folder on your sd/ext, probably the best way is to restore with advanced restore and just restore system only.

Let me know if it works or you need some more help
I'm in the same boat here too. I hope someone can find a way to fix it soon. I'd really appreciate a backup too, but I understand the concern about data.

I have really been through the ringer today. I started off this morning by noticing that I had no data at all. I was on 6.893 and TH3ORYROM 2.1 and have been for a few days with no trouble until today when I lost data. I tried everything to get it back, but nothing. I called VZW to make sure there wasn't a network problem in my area and they suggested that I try everything that I had already done (bat. pull, sim card re-register, turn off LTE radio, etc). When they couldn't fix anything, they wanted to transfer me to tier 2 tech support, but they apparently need to talk to me on a different phone so they can diagnose this one, but I didn't have access to another phone. So I decided I would try to flash one of the updates hoping it would reflash the radio file and wake it up. When I got home, I used the R3L3AS3DRoot to restore to stock and tried to install 7.893, but the update failed. I searched around and tried every method I could to get any of the updates to install, but nothing worked, still no 3g either. Eventually, in my desperate attempt to fix this myself I decided to wipe everything and start over. I wiped the webtop partition. I think that's what really screwed me up, because nothing else I did was any different that what I've done in the past. After wiping everything, I went back to the R3L3AS3DRoot and tried to run it. No matter which option I selected, it seemed to run fine, but I couldn't boot past the fastboot screen. I tried to fxz using RSD Lite, but every flash I tried failed. Then, in a panic, I came across P3's moto-fastboot method used to "get you back on the update path". I ran that and it freaking worked!! Then I figured I'd try to get up to 7.893, but I've tried absolutely everything I can find mention of and nothing works. Every install fails. I am getting some intermittent 3G now though. And to top it all off, I discovered that none of the nandroid backups I've made will restore and most of them don't even exist. I just discovered that I needed to check "use external storage" for the backups to take. I thought I had been covering my ass by making backups, but they weren't valid. Currently I have stock, rooted phone with an intermittent 3G signal. System Version 5.5.886, baseband CDMA_N_03.1C.57RLTEDC_U_05.15.02, kernel [email protected] #1, and build number 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. As I sit now, my plan is to see how it acts tomorrow and if I still have a lot of trouble with data, I will return it to stock unrooted and take it into a Verizon store and see if they will let me try a new SIM card. I don't really know what else to do at this point.
