[Q] Restore to stock -- stuck! - Nook Color General

Sorry -- this is probably a silly question but I can't find the answer anywhere.
I need to do a full factory reset. When I do the 8 boot failure option, however, on the 9th boot it goes into clockwork recovery -- where I do a delete user data and factory reset (from the Clockwork menu). Once I reboot (and have to register again to get past the B&N process) I'm still rooted -- or at least I still have Superuser on the Extras menu.
I'm thinking I somehow need to get past Clockwork to do a true reset????

I'm also trying to do this, and having the same problems.

I used adb to set the 8 boot failure and got the boot failure screen as well. I followed the method from the 'restore to stock' thread (which you probably should have posted in, instead of making a new thread) and used the hardware buttons to wipe the rest. I also had some apps left like SU left over. Also I was on 1.0.1 which I manually put on (when I had a booting loop into clockwork (my own fault)). My NC came with 1.1.0, so the restore to stock didn't bring me back to what I bought the nook as.

That 9th boot attempt is supposed to re-image the system partition... having CWR installed on the internal memory must be interfering with that process..
If you want to go back to stock without root files or anything.. try the following -
*NOTE* You must use CWR 3.0.0.5.. 3.0.0.6 will format the partitions as EXT 4, which the stock OS and kernel do not support.
Here are the steps -
1. Download CWR for SD card .7 from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870 (choose a size appropriate for your sd card)
2. Download Nook Restore 1.01 from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
3. Image CWR onto a sd card using WinImage if you're in windows or dd if you're using a mac or linux (In WinImage, you'd go to disk>restore virtual hard drive to physical) give it your sd card reader's drive letter and choose the image you downloaded in step 1)
4. Copy Nook Restore 1.01 from step 2 onto this SD card and eject it from your PC
5. Power off the Nook Color and insert the sd card into the slot
6. Power on the Nook Color and boot into CWR
7. Go to Mounts and Storage
8. Format System and Data
9. Go back to "Install Zip from SD Card on the previous menu by pressing the power button
10. Select "Install Zip from SD Card" and then "Choose Zip from SD Card" * If you get an error, you need to go back to mounts and storage and mount the sdcard*
11. Choose Nook Restore 1.01 and wait for the installation to complete
12. Go back to the main menu and choose wipe cache
13. Power off the Nook Color
14. Remove the SD card
15. Power on the Nook color
The nook should boot into the stock OS and ask you to go through the initial setup process again.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Simplest way to Nookie Froyo

Sorry for the stupid post but I would like to move on from a basic AutoNookie Eclair set up to Froyo. I get a bit worried reading the How-To's though as I found the initial rooting process terrifying as it was.
Can you guys clarify what the simplest way to get Froyo on the EMMC. I have HC on an SD card and its cool to look at but essentially useless for what I am after at the moment. Currently running a very buggy Eclair. Froyo would be sweet.
Thanks for the heads up.
- Power off the Nook completely
- Remove any SD card you may have in it
- Insert the SD card you burned
- Plug the USB cable into the computer
- Plus the USB cable into the Nook (this will auto-boot the Nook from the SD card)
- Once CWM boots up, go into "mounts and storage"
- Select "format data" (wait for it to finish)
- Select "format system" (wait for it to finish)
- Select "format boot"
- Press the power button to go back
- Select "install zip from sdcard"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard"
- Select "froyo-emmc-0.2.zip"
- Confirm your decision
- Let it finish (it will tell when it is done)
- Press the power button until you are at the first CWM screen (should say "reboot system now" in first option)
- Remove the sd card
- Select "reboot system now"
- Important: Let the Nook boot up completely. I typically refrain from touching it until the display turns off after boot-up
- Unlock the Nook
- Unplug the USB cable from the Nook
- Power off completely
- Insert the same sd card again (the one we've been flashing from)
- Plug in the USB cable and let CWM boot up again
- Select "install zip from sd card"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard"
- Select "googleapps.zip"
- Confirm your decision
- Let it finish (it will tell when it is done)
- Press the power button until you are at the first CWM screen (should say "reboot system now" in first option)
- Remove the sd card
- Select "reboot system now"
- Important: Let the Nook boot up completely. I typically refrain from touching it until the display turns off after boot-up
- Unlock the Nook
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
does this require me to be back to stock or can I do it fine running from Eclair.
Also, will I maintain the apps I have already installed.
Thanks for that reply. Brilliant.
First off, I purposefully left these instructions vague. Please just use this guide as a starting point for what you must learn about. ALOT of reading of the development forum is a requirement, going into this without fully understanding each step is foolish. If done wrong you will cause yourself all kinds of headaches, though producing a brick is hard but not impossible.
You will lose all of your data on the nook color. You will lose the ability to start into clockwork mod(from EMMC) and make/flash recoveries(does not work with froyo).
I am no android developer, nor do I claim to be one. I'm just relaying what I've learned, and has worked for me in the past, from these forums. I'll answer questions to the best of my abilities, but please keep in mind that Froyo IS buggy.
K, here we go.
Easy way is the flashable cwm image located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938200
Backup eclaire rom then reset to factory default
1: Install Rom manager
2: Flash clockwork mod in Rom Manager
3: Reboot into recovery
4: Create backup of rom(stores on sd card)
5: Wipe data and reset to factory default
turn off
Burn froyo image onto SD card
1: Download winimage (assuming windows)
2: Run as administrator
3: Disk -> restore virtual hard disk image
4: Select SD card
5: Select image to flash
Flash Image
Flash to EMMC
1: Put froyo sd card into nook and boot
2: Clockwork mod will start
3: In "Mounts and Storage" format boot, then system, then data
4: Go back(pwr button) and select flash zip from sd card
5: Select Froyo image
wait for completion
Once Flashed and boots
1: If SD card does not mount replace vold.prop with nookie Froyo 5.8's (A fix is curently being worked on)
2: Install Gapps via instructions here: http://www.nookdevs.com/NookColor:_Nookie_Froyo_Tips
3: Install OC kernel, instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10903913&postcount=233

Simplified instructions for flashing "HC v4 eMMC 2nd ed" ROM

After successfully getting HC running on my NC, I recently helped a couple of co-workers do the same on theirs. In the process, I came up with a set of instructions that worked great for each of them, so I figured I'd share.
Please note that these are just a simplified version of what appears in the original thread here: [ZIP][DEV][ROM] HC v4 eMMC 2nd ed. - Flashable ZIP {02/21/11}. All I did was put all of the pieces together into one list.
Requirements to follow these instructions exactly:
2 GB microSD card for flashing the ROM
Another microSD card for everyday use (I refer to it as "your 8GB sdcard" below)
Linux workstation
Basic familiarity with linux command line
Here goes:
Delete any existing partitions on your 2GB SD card. An fdisk -l should show just /dev/sdx, no partitions (e.g. /dev/sdx1).
Download the 2GB bootable SD card image from here:
http://legacyschool.us.to/nookdev/clockwork/0.1-ext4/2gb_clockwork-0.1-ext4.tar.gz
MD5SUM:
598262de35053f2d34480175ac337d7c 2gb_clockwork-0.1-ext4.tar.gz
Decompress that file and dd the resulting "2gb_clockwork-0.1-ext4.img" to your 2GB sdcard. (The dd target should be /dev/sdx, not /dev/sdx1.) This is the card you'll use to flash images, recover from "bricked", etc. You'll only want to have this in your Nook if/when you want to boot from this card. Leave this sdcard connected to your computer for now -- you'll be copying a file to it shortly.
Download the HoneyComb installation zip from here:
http://www.multiupload.com/47M6MIFS9A
MD5SUM:
ac42f8ca2d04e15b8981593e60b0abc1 HC-v4-emmc-2nd-edition.zip
DON'T unzip HC-v4-emmc-2nd-edition.zip. Just copy it over to your 2GB bootable sdcard. Feel free to create a new directory for it; just remember where you copied it.
You're done prepping the 2GB card now. Unmount it, pop it into your Nook, and reboot the Nook.
When it boots, you'll be in ClockWorkMod recovery (CWM). This is where you install/backup/etc various ROMs (and sometimes applications). Navigate through the various menus using the up/down volume keys on the side of your nook. Press the "n" button on the front to execute whatever you have currently selected. Press the power button on the side to go "back".
In CWM, navigate to "mounts and storage". Format each of these:
/system
/data
/cache
Also in "mounts & storage", make sure /system and /data aren't mounted. (If you have the option to mount them, that means they're unmounted; and vice versa.) In the same way, make sure sdcard IS mounted.
Go back to the root of the CWM menu, then go to "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard". Navigate to wherever you saved HC-v4-emmc-2nd-edition.zip and select it. You won't see any progress, so just wait a while; around 10 minutes, I think.
Once CWM reports that the install completed, go back to "mounts and storage" and unmount the sdcard. Remove the 2GB bootable sdcard, insert your 8GB sdcard, and select "reboot" from CWM.
Your Nook will boot up running Honeycomb.

Stuck at Boot Screen Help Please

Hi guys,
I tried installing CM7 onto my nook, i installed the zip of it onto the root of my sd card and then went into clockwork and installed the zip without wiping anything. Now im stuck at the stock android root boot screen not the even the CM7 one. I tried to go into recovery but i cant and i cant do the 8 interruptions either. I was just wondering if i have to restore the NC back to 1.1 or can i just burn the image of clockwork onto my sd card and zip another rom instead?
This happened to me, too.
I think it was because I wasn't using the latest Clockwork.
Take your SD card out and redo it making sure you use CW 3.0.1.0.
Then follow the steps listed here:
Download a working build of CyanogenMod and place it on the root of the card.
Optional: Download the Google Apps archive and place it on the root of the card.
Turn your Nook Color completely off. (Hold power button then tap "Power Off")
Insert the SD card you installed ClockworkMod Recovery onto.
Once ClockworkMod Recovery has booted, use the volume buttons to highlight options, the "n" button to select the highlighted option, and power to go back a menu.
Select Wipe data/factory reset.
Select Wipe cache partition.
Go to install zip from sdcard, then choose zip from sdcard and find your build of CyanogenMod.
Optional: Repeat step 6 with your Google Apps archive instead.
Go to mounts and storage --> unmount sdcard --> remove sdcard. (Rebooting without this step may just return you to the CWR menu.)
Go back to the main menu and select reboot system now. The Nook Color should now boot into CyanogenMod.
(In my case it froze and I had to hold power to shut it off with no negative effects. Your results may vary.)
Sigh, had to copy n paste the steps since I can't post links yet.
I re-did mine and it turned out just fine.
Thanks a lot. Im going to try that out and report back.
Yeah, sounds like you missed the wipe /system /data /cache step. I did the same once, and resulted the same bootloop -> took me a few minutes to realize what I had done.
Did what you guys said and my nook is back . Thanks a lot for the input. Saved me!

[Q] Where do I start?

Just got my color nook today.
Trying to get my nook color up and running on a custom rom. But I am lost, there appears to be quiet a few ways to start and I am not sure the best and most updated method.
So as of now I am not rooted, pretty much pulled it out and charged it, I checked and its running 1.1.0 out of the box.
I'm going for the Phiremod rom, and I want to boot from internal memory not SD card.
Would really appreciate some links to what I need.
Thanks
lost just lost
so i ended up using autonooter
then made a sd card with clockworkmod on it
installed clockwork mod, installed a zip just like i would on a phone
and .... no go it wont boot to android just back to clockworkmod, what am i doing wrong?
also getting an error in clockwork
"E:can't mount /cache/recovery/log"
"E:can't open /cache/recovery/log"
"E:can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log"
"E:can't open /cache/recovery/last_log"

The errors are normal; since you don't have any cache or its not mounted.
You burned a CWM image on a SD card and installed the Phiremod rom from his Zip file in CWM?
Then you only have to remove the sd-card while in CWM and then choose 'reboot device' (first option in main menu) (sometimes you get back in CWM but reboot a couple of times and it should boot Phiremod CM7 off the emmc.)
(if the Nook finds a bootloader on the SD card, it'll load that instead of the internal emmc memory. )
too used to phones
hey thanks so much for the reply
that would have solved the problem, but i was running cwm on internal and using a different sd card
found out what was wrong, i was doing the wipes like you would on the phone
i.e. wipe data/factory reset and cache there
(instead of from inside mounts and storage)
finally up and running after 4 hours haha
thanks again
Just flashed a new 1.1.0 to CM7; no need for autonooter if you're going custom ROM straight off.
1. Download the SDCard-bootable CWM. Burn to MicroSD with WinDiskImage32 (needs to be run as Admin for block-level access if you get write errors)
2. Drop on your ROM .zip of choice.
3. Drop on the gapps .zip
4. Eject, insert into Nook, boot up.
5. TAKE A BACKUP. This is your 'oh crap' restore point.
6. Install zip from SD; install ROM. Do the same, install gapps. Wipe cache and data.
7. Remove MicroSD, boot NC. If it works, format the MicroSD card in your computer as FAT32 (after copying off your backup, under the clockworkmod directory), insert into NC, good to go. If it bombs out, redo step 4-7, skipping 5.
If you can't get it to load, boot from MicroSD and restore your backup. No harm, no foul. Keep a copy of this 'gold' backup on your computer. I forgot to do this and ended up blowing my original away when I reformatted my MicroSD.
Update your kernel
Keep up to date with Dalingrin's latest kernel, he keeps pushing the overclocking to new heights every few days it seems

He due to release a kernel sometime soon that can run at 1.3Ghz...

Bricked

Here is my latest attempt to get working again.
I tried about a month go to unbrick and put aside to let my mind get fresh. A month ago DizzyDen sent me all the memory partitions and I "dd" all of them, but could not get the boot menu below to go away.
Nook is using Encore U-Boot Menu by j4mm3r. 1.2 port + extras by fattire.
From an earlier xda nookcolor post with some modifications:
"1a. Download http://www.mediafire.com/?5vbw33ue7pvod0g
1b. Download http://www.mediafire.com/?1zfj4334krqhs48
1c. Extract the .img files from the above, set aside for now."
2. Here I tried verygreen 1.3 sdcard with latest CM7, internal CWM recovery and SDcard CWM recovery. I used the latest CWM recovery. On the SDcard CWM recovery I used both the latest and the one for the original nook ROM, which mine is.
"3. Install ADB. From what I read there is limited success in installing it in 64-bit Windows. It didn't work for me. This may be the most difficult step." I got it to work on my 64-bit machine.
"4. If you can see the /sdcard partition on the Froyo SD copy the two .img files there.
4a. Insert the Froyo SD Card into the Nook and boot. When it's ready start ADB and verify that it can communicate with the Nookie. (Type "ADB devices" in DOS window)" Here I tried CM7 SDcard, CWM Recovery SDcard and internal and CWM Recovery. CWM Recovery
"4b. If the .img files are on the sdcard already, go to step 5.
4c. Type "ADB push (path)/boot.img /sdcard/boot.img" without quotes and with appropriate source path. Wait until it's done.
4d. Type "ADB push (path)/system.img /sdcard/system.img" without quotes and with appropriate source path. Wait until it's done." Here I copied with windows 7 and tried the adb push commands as well. In either situation I was able to get the boot and system image successfully copied over.
"5. Type "ADB shell" without the quotes.
5a. Type "dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1" without quotes. Wait until finished.
5b. Type "dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5" without quotes. Wait until finished." It completed successfully.
"6. Once done, turn off Nook and remove SD Card. Save it for another rainy day or put it back into circulation. I saved mine. Cheap insurance for $15.
7. Follow procedure at http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM to restore firmware and reset data." Never able to get here since my boot menu came back up.
Any suggestion as to what I should do next?
1. Don't know what you are trying to do.
2. Don't know what problem you hit.
3. Don't know what your current system is.
Can't help, m8.
I have screwed up my nook to the point that when you turn it on the screen would just be all black, nothing would come up on the screen, and I was able to get back to a fully working system in no time. I would say that it is 99.9% impossible to brick it without really trying too.
Your post is a little hard to understand, so let me see if I have this right,
- You were running a modified version of the stock 1.2 firmware
- You were also using the modified boot menu created by j4mm3r from HERE
- The rest is all a little fuzzy
- You are now trying to return to stock, but can’t because you can’t remove the modified boot menu
If this is somewhat correct, then this should be able to help you.
- Download the stock 1.2 update.zip found HERE, get the “update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip” file
- Now download the file to make a bootable CWM card found HERE
- Follow the directions in that post to make your bootable CWM card, then place the “update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip” file onto that card
- With your NC off, put the bootable CWM card into your NC, and turn it on
- When CWM starts up, select “wipe cache partition,” followed by “wipe cache partition”
- Now scroll down to and select “mounts and storage”
- Now scroll down to and select “format /boot”
- When that has completed, you will then select “install zip from sdcard”
- Then select “choose zip from sdcard,” and select the “update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip” file
- When that has completed, remove the card, and select reboot the device
Your device should now boot just like stock. You can then follow the steps outlined in your step 7 procedure, just follow part one method one, and then part two. At this point you should be back to a completely stock NC.
@GMPOWER
I have the update-nc-stock-1.3.zip on my SDcard ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.8. I have the original nookcolor.
I used my SDcard CWM v3.0.2.8 disk with the update-nc-stock-1.3.zip and followed your instructions.
- Then select “choose zip from sdcard,” and select the “update-nc-stock-1.3.zip” file
- When that has completed, remove the card, and select reboot the device
My nookcolor rebooted back to green Cyanogen bootup screen followed by the Cyanogen mod skater. Then I get force closes with dspmanager. It is running Mod version 7-08192011-NIGHTLYencore. It did not boot back to stock.
@votinh
What I was trying to do was install update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip over the last nightly 8-19-2011 that installed correctly. Note: when I attempt from Mounts and Storage to -format /system it hangs and and I have to force restart the nookcolor.
If I attempt to install without format/system the update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip from the CWM Recovery SDcard v3.0.2.8, it finds, opens, installs, saying Install from sdcard complete. Rebooting and looking at system about says it is still nightly 8-19-2011.
That is why I have tried everything I can to restore the emmc to stock. Everything I tried failed.
I've messed my nook up a couple of time tonight . Have you tried downloading the twrp 2.0 SD card image from here and burning it to a SD card? That will get you a bootable sd card assuming your sd slot isn't broken. Then download the 1.01 Restore from here. Copy that to the bootable sd card and put it in your nook. Power up and you should be in TWRP 2.0 (touchscreen). Wipe system and do a factory reset. After that, flash the nook-complete-restore-1.0.1.zip and reboot to system (after removing sd card). It completely restored me to a stock version, including /boot, etc. One time I did it, I had to hold down the N and power button and do a factory reset for it to boot into the B&N nook ROM.
You could use the clockworkmod bootable sd image as well.

Did you try TWRP 2.0? If it also gives an error, maybe you have a hardware problem.
I think the problem is that you're trying to flash a B&N update, when what's on your device is fubar and/or not a B&N rom.
Try flashing a complete B&N restore, instead. There's a link to a complete 1.0.1 restore in this post. (There's also a complete 1.2 restore floating around, but darned if I can find a link to it just now.)

Just tried TWRP 2.0 from a modified CWM Recovery card, latest verstion.
nook-complete-restore-1.0.1.zip gives me
E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Cannot load volume /misc!
Got same errors when I tried to install nook-complete-restore-1.3.zip
Install /sdcard/update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip stops at
Installing update... doe not actually install when I reboot. Returns to August Nightly I previously installed in emmc.
Must have hardware problem. Anyway to zero out nookcolor so I can return for repair since I can not reset to stock.
As others have said it is virtually impossible to fully brick a Nook and hardware failures are less likely than problems with your procedures.
How are you creating your SD boot card? The method used can determine whether you get a real usable boot SD card. For example, it is most important that you use a real USB card adapter. Do not use a memory card reader slot on a PC or laptop. Do not use a Nook or other phone via USB as a card adapter. For best results use a Sandisk card. Use Win32DiskImager to create the card.
If you do that then I'd suggest you start with the VeryGreen CM7 install method onto the same SD card to prove that all is working independently of the emmc.
If you get to that point then you should be good to proceed to either a return to stock or an emmc CM7 install.
Of course it is possible your hardware is screwed (e.g. emmc not working anymore), but it sounds like you should try a few more things first.
I nearly did this. Follow these instructions:
Step 1) Download and boot and use the contents of repartition-boot-with-stock.zip with an SD Card.
Step 2) Take out SD Card.
Step 3) Manual Restore (Rom flash back)
Step 4) Factory Reset - Scroll down to Part Two on the above page.
Doing this in order is very important.
When you're done you should be greeted by the first-time boot tutorial video and this message:

As others have said it is virtually impossible to fully brick a Nook and hardware failures are less likely than problems with your procedures.
How are you creating your SD boot card? The method used can determine whether you get a real usable boot SD card. For example, it is most important that you use a real USB card adapter. Do not use a memory card reader slot on a PC or laptop. Do not use a Nook or other phone via USB as a card adapter. For best results use a Sandisk card. Use Win32DiskImager to create the card.

Using a real USB card adapter, using Sandisk card class 4, using Win32DiskImager to create the cards. Using VeryGreen CM7 with CyanogenMod-7.2.0-RC0-encore-KANG (added prefix update-) and have in the past used update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip with VeryGreen CM7. All is working independently of the emmc.
Been to this point many a time, return to stock does not work, nor does CM7 install to emmc when booting from latest CWM Recovery on a SDcard. The new TWRP 2.0 from external SDcard does not work either. This is why I am concluding that my emmc has a hardware failure, stuck with my August nightly of CM7 so I can not return.
Any suggestions on how to completely trash the emmc so that I can return it before my 1-year warranty runs out. Everything I do including dd command to the boot and system partitions leave the emmc running the August nightly, usually with force closes when it starts.

I did everything in the order that you said. repartition-boot-with-stock.zip from an SDcard said that it completed successfully for 1.0.1. Went to Part Two. Powered off and rebooted, was greeted with green cyganmod label followed by U-boot Mem with 1.2 port extras by fattite boot loader.
Looks to me like my only options are to run from SDcard or somehow trash emmc so that nothing loads including cyganmod's boot loader so I can claim emmc memory failed and return for warranty replacement.
Any thoughts on how to trash the cyganmod's boot loader and my August nightly installed in the emmc? All attempts to restore to various stock OS's seemed to fail at trashing the green boot loader and August nightly installed in emmc.
Maybe your partitions on the emmc are so screwed up that the previous techniques aren't working.

That shows what the partition table should look like and also how to manually put it right.
