[How to] Install an app

I want to install Opera Mini on my G1. the apk is out there but I can not figure out a way to make it run load do anything. Anyone no how to make this happen?
For those wondering why I want Opera Mini is becoz I really like Opera mini in a hurry.

You have to make sure to check the box that says allow outside downloads. But the opera mini wont work its for the old beta emulator and will not load on thre G1.

I have seen on many users asking on forum what is .apk file ? How to install .apk app on G1 phone ? How to install non market apk apps on android ? etc. A apk file is “android package file” with the extension ‘.apk’ use to install any application on Google Android powered mobile phone. So incase you need to install any application on your android phone you need to have file with .apk format.
Installing any application on google android is pretty easy but installing non market apps on android phone is little tricky one. Well don’t worry here is guide for installing .apk apps on android phones.
How to Install .Apk Apps on Google Android G1 Phone
1. Install and open the Apps Installer application from the Android Market.
2. This opens a view showing *.apk application names in the sdcard root directory.(note, if no AppNames are listed you have no .apk files in the root directory of the SDCard)
3. Touch the app name to initiate installation of the app.
4. The app is now installed
How to Non-Market .Apk Application on Google Android G1 Phone
1. Download and install Google Android SDK.
2. Now type adb in a command shell will display all the options, adb.exe is SDK tool used to install applications and interface with the device.
3. Now Connect Your G1 Phone to your computer using USB cable. You need to install Drivers for this. Download Android USB drivers from here. This driver is required for adb to interface with an android G1 phone using USB cable.
4. Go to Settings/SD card & phone storage and Unmount/eject SD Card. You can enable it again later after you installed your third-party application.
5. Go to Settings/Application settings and enable Unknown sources.
6. Download the Application installer .apk file to a local folder on your computer, Now type below command at command shell to install app.
adb install <Full Path to apk file><apk file name>
The above guide is only application for windows XP users and Windows Vista users wont be able to use it, since android sdk for windows vista is not available.

There's no such menu. i.e. "disable Use for USB storage" at "Settings/SD card & phone storage" in T-mobile G1.
To enable ADB, you'll need to turn on "USB debugging" in Settings - Application settings - Development.

Opera mini 4.2 beta is on marketplace now anyway.

actually, there is another way. download the app from the internet (either using Android or PC) and move it to the SD card. then download any file browser app (such as IO File Manager) from Android market. open file browser app and locate the downloaded app from the internet and open it. that's it...

FYI: Opera is also on SlideME Marketplace. You can install directly from within SAM. It's under "Communications" category.
If you don't have SAM, just visit http://SlideME.org/sam2 from your G1 and download SAM.

okay i've read through a lot of threads the past couple hours and i just can't figure this out. i can't install 3rd party apps using apps installer or a file manager, but i can install perfectly fine from the market. it tells me that i need to free up some space in order to do so. i have the box checked and such for installing 3rd party apps in settings, and i'm running JF1.42 RC33... what the heck could the problem [email protected]

might be a dumb question, but do you have enough space(mine starts complaining @ less than 5mb left)? menu-settings-storage-internal space.

try adb install, if previous post doesn't help

aye, i'm well above 5MB even without the /data/data move and the /app move, i believe i'm somewhere around 25mb if i keep everything on my phone. so you think the ADB install will fix this? i will have to try it when i get off of work, i don't think the DoD will take kindly to me using their computers for it lol. what thread is that listed under?

Very Simple to install downloaded apk apps!!!
1. Go into menu/settings/applications and check the box allow install of non-market applications.
2. Then download the app: ApkInstaller
Once you do this, you download the apk file from the internet. Save it somewhere on your memory card. Open ApkInstaller and search for the file on your memory card and install.
It's just that simple. I do it all of the time.

All these methods seem pretty confusing... All I do is just click allow third party apps and then click the .apk file in oi file manager.

My bad. Sure glad the file manager came out so I don't have to go through all that trouble .

Creating a install image

So I haven't found anything so hopefully I'm not creating a duplicate thread, also I hope this is the correct spot to post this.
I have about 500 Sprint Heroes that need to be set up with specific settings and have a few apps installed. Doing this on 500 phones could take forever to accomplish. Would the phones need to be rooted in order to install a image with preset settings/applications? Also, I'm a total noob and its possible this is way over my head and I should just do this manually but is there an (not really easy but...) a tutorial to create an image to accomplish this?

Um, the only way I can think to do it is to get one phone and set it up exactly how you want it, minus any specific account settings. Here's how I would do it:
Boot in to one Hero. Log in to your account and download all the apps you want. Download Titanium Backup. Use Titanium Backup's "create update.zip" feature to make Titanium Backup zip that you can flash from recovery. Set up all the apps with what settings you need, but only do it for data apps, not system apps (Don't include special log-ins, passwords, etc.). Use Titanium Backup to backup all of the data apps.
Once you have all those apps backed up how you like them, reboot into recovery and do a complete wipe (not SD card). Flash the ROM you want to load onto all of the phones and flash Google apps. Now flash the Titanium backup ZIP you made earlier. Boot up but when you are asked to set up your account, don't. skip everything. Go into Titanium Backup and restore all of the apps+data (use batch install). This might take a while if you're on Titanium Backup free). Change all of the settings on the phone you'd like, then uninstall Titanium Backup (unless you want it on every phone). The phone should be 100% how you want it to appear on all of those phones.
Reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup. Make two, just in case. When it is done, reboot and connect your phone to your PC. Mount the SD card. browse to /nandroid/ on your SD card and you should see something like HTC9494952954 as a folder. Copy that onto your PC. That folder is what contains your "install image" (You can name the folder something like 'install-image').
All of the phones would have to be rooted, unfortunately, but all you'd have to do at this point is copy the folder to sdcard/nandroid/ on each SD card and do a nandroid restore using that image.
It sucks that this is for so many phones... It's the easiest way I can think to do it. :S Maybe ask a few buddies to help?

I need a screen time out of 15 seconds with a preset gesture lock on it, also gps off. Also need 3 applications installed, advanced task killer, astro, and one company specific application that we created. Its not a lot, but it adds up when you have 500 heroes you need to do it on, its a slow process to log into the market on each phone under the same gmail login to download the 2 apps from market.

Download the 2 market apps as apk's (they're free), since you're using the same gmail account for all the phones, email the apk's to that account. When you turn each phone on you will have to log into gmail and just download them onto each phone. I'm not sure how to get all the settings the way you want them without rooting or doing them individually, If you root the phones, you can make a custom ROM and have all the settings you want and how you want them, plus have the apps you want on them pre-loaded. Again, you will have to flash the ROMs to each phone and know how to make a ROM.
I don't know, man. It sounds like a big order for what you want to do and how you want it done. In the end it will be your decision on how you do it.

how to export installed list of applications to some file

Is there any way or any command which can save my installed set of applications to a Text file or PDF. My applications are growing and I cannot remember every one of them and I require all of them at one point or other. Can anyone give me some guidance?

You could use titanium backup, it does have an option to create an update.zip file for your backups which I haven't used but I assume it backs up your apps to the zip so you can reinstall apps from recovery, would need someone to clarify this though

I was using back up pro but it is no use. Suppose you flash a new rom, and if you restore most of them end up with Force Close errors. Since most of my applications are free, I don't mind spending some time installing them. But since many roms are changing so fast, I have to flash to keep up with the times, you know.

I don't know if there is such an option to save a list of installed apps, but it would be kinda useful.
I soon realized such a list would help and I am just manually creating my own in a text file, and all of the non-stock apps I have (thus far) added are in appbrain.com and I have ensured I have added each to "Apps on the phone" which then appears under "My Apps".

A list no but as all my apps are via AppBrain that's my list .
I use Root Explorer to copy all the APKS to a folder on the external card + a copy on PC . New firmware just open APK folder and install .

For the time being, I am using Titanium free version and it backed up my applications and after I flashed the new rom I was able to restore all the applications via it's batch run commands. I do hope that I don't get force close errors. Upto now everything is working fine.

[Q] Enabling non-market aps with OneClick

I have used SuperOneClick to root my phone, and am now trying to use it to enable non-market aps. When I do, I get the following message:
Checking value... (requires root)
Non-market applications are disabled.
Allow non-market apps... (requires root)
OK
Checking value... (requires root)
FAILED​
Can anyone let me know what I need to do to enable non-market aps?

Did you try a non market app Install to make sure it wasn't working?

Bro...same thing here. What I did was flash to just about any rom and the rom will allow to install non market apps. Also, on the market there is an app that allows you to install apps from the SD card. So you could go to getandroidstuff.com and download the .apk, put on your cappy, and use the app to install. But personally I like the ROM! Yee

Sorry, I never got an e-mail that I got a reply.
Yes, I've tried to download the new Amazon market but get an error message that I can't install non-market aps.

There is a second way. It involves tibu and a brain.
1. Find settings storage in an Sqlite editor, I use sqlite from the market, it costs money but it is worth it.
2. Find the database in settings storage and open it
3. Click on secure
4.look at the first column, find allow non market apps.
Change the value for the non market apps from 0 to 1
5. Save the database.
You may need to reboot but that shouldn't be necessary
If it is already a 1 then change it to a zero and save then do it again.
Also before you do this download the super one click again and try it with the newly downloaded one click.

Backup of your app?
Plenty of apps available to back them up with, if you've already uninstalled it I think your only other option is to download again.

Use "App backup & restore".
It creates apk of your installed apps.

If your device is rooted you can find your applications at /data/app and your system applications at /system/app
Just stay careful of what you do with system apps

There are several apps which can do App backups for you if you have root, one example of an excellent backup application is Titanium Backup, the Pro version even allows you to sync your backup to Dropbox or Box. The apks of the backed up applications will then be in the Titanium Backup folder you designated on your SD Card and even in your Dropbox if you used the feature.
