Wifi droppage - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just lived out a nightmare trying to figure out how to ' reverse tether' so I can use my cable internet while at home and not waste my data. I Finally get it working with connectify and virtual router only to discover that I get dropped frequently and sometimes can't even reconnect with a reboot of my phone and/or pc. unfortunately I haven't been able to test it on wifi anywhere else cuz there isn't much around. Can I get some advice in things to check/change on my phone (modem?) That might keep me connected? My girlfriend has an htc and she doesn't get dropped so it's something with my phone. I'm running 2.2.1 that came with serendipity 5.11. Nobody has issues with wifi that I could find in the serendipity thread so I'm at a loss.
Thanks a bunch

Did u try flashing to stock, and re-flashing the ROM u have on urs?

Actually, no. guess I should give that a shot. Does the modem affect wifi or no?

modem absolutely affects Wifi

I read somewhere on here that ths modem doesn't affect wifi. But them someone else said they thought it did. Do I want sure. I haven't had a chance to reflash yet but here is some additional info on my problem..
I seem to get dropped when my phone has been idle for a while. Like right now I am connected but when I am done writing this and I set my phone down itll be disconnected when I come back to it 9 out of 10 times. I got dropped just before writing this in the same way. I connected, set my phone down, came back maybe 15 minutes later and I was disconnected. I was on connectify at the time and couldn't reconnect. I closed connectify and launched virtual router which I am connected with now. Changing the tether program doesn't always work. Sometimes I have to restart my phone too. I have a feeling I need to look into a different modem.

Froyo + WiFi = disabled connections

So ever since I've gotten my Nexus One I've been noticing it drops out of a WiFi way too often. It does it both at home and at work on Wireless routers using the latest firmware. I've set the sleep policy to never go to sleep but most of the times I wake my phone up, I'll find it on 3G instead of the full strength WiFi it should be on. On 2.1 when I'd go into WiFi settings it would show the connection and say something along the lines of "Connection unsuccessful, tap to try again" and on 2.2 it just says "Disabled, Secured by blah blah blah". If I retry, it ALWAYS connects and WiFi will stay active for a short period of time before falling back to 3G.
Is there some way I can tell Android to retry the WiFi connection if it fails instead of just giving up? I've been looking through the WiFi API's on the Android Developer site and I'm this close to writing an application that will attempt to mitigate this issue for me.
If I'm within range of one of my pre configured networks, I want the phone to try it's hardest to stay on WiFi. If it loses connection, retry. It it can't get it after 5 retries, wait five minutes and try it again, don't just give up and mark the connection as disabled.
I've read tons of threads about people with WiFi issues and people always say "it's the router, it's the channel, etc, etc" but my WiFi works perfectly fine as long as there is a human to reconnect it if it drops.
Anyone else in the same boat as me?
ok so apparently I'm the only one with an N1 and a WiFi issue.......
I have the same exact issues.
I have the same issue as well and if it stays on I have to turn wifi off and back on so it will connect properly

same issue here. i had been looking for an app that would force the connectivity, but the market doesn't seem to have it. just a bunch of crappy wifi on/off switcher management apps. i'm surprised that no one has hacked this function or built an app for it.
It's certainly a very annoying problem. Mine will go to known good wifi networks, at work, at home and at other locations where my other devices work flawlessly. I have a coworker with the exact same firmware (we updated using the same file) on a nexus one that has never seen this problem, which I find odd, but I'm fairly new to Android. It looks like a software or driver issue to me, but as I said, I'm new to Android.
My device shows the known networks as "Disabled", but I can connect manually.
Looks like it's worth me coding up an App to fix this then.
what kernel are you using? i used to have that problem but that has gone away with newer kernels. unfortunately a new problem has arisen where after being in standby for a while, wifi shows as connected but doesn't have an outside ip. wondering if its my rogers modem or not.

Personally I wouldn't do any work towards writing an app to fix this since it looks to me to be an OS or driver issue that should be resolved in a future release (hopefully in very short order).
An app would really just be a band-aid, but I'm the lazy type and I can deal with using my cell ular data when I don't feel like reconnecting my wifi.
Full disclosure: I'm a crummy programmer and it takes me forever to write stuff so I'm usually less inclined to do it.

I'd rather take the time to fix it then wait for an update that may never arrive. Always fun digging into the API anyways
That's cool. I still find it a bit troubling, though, that some devices see it and some don't, using the same firmware, on the same wireless networks.
I guess it could be a board rev. difference or an app conflict or something. ::shrugs::
I have a similar problem. I use APNdroid to keep cellular data off and use wifi, but I continually have to reconnect wifi no matter what if I am not actively using it. Defeats the purpose of push email.
I downloaded APNdroid after checking data usage and finding that with wifi on there was still significant 3G leakage. Especially confusing with wifi set to never sleep and plugged in overnight.
On the plus side, APNdroid has netted me a lot more battery life, I can almost get two days and one night. I almost never use my spare battery anymore.
Just as an additional data point, I am having the exact same issue with 2.2 FRF83 (I had been on FRF50).
It looks to me like it is simply scanning all of the time and never associating with a known network. I'm not sure why it flags them as "Disabled", however.
Have you guys tried to set the "wi-fi sleep policy" to "never"
if not, try this:
Wifi settings->menu->advanced->wifi sleep policy->Never

Yeah, it doesn't help, that was one of the first things I tried. Any time I leave and come back, the networks show as "Disabled". It's a frustrating issue in that it isn't consistant. It's 80% fail, 20% work.
I had my g1 for a year now and just now got my n1. I havent rooted it b/c of this bug. At first i couldnt listen online radio b/c as soon the display went out it would buffer the whole time. I played with the wifi router and the n1 wifi settings an managed to fix it somehow, BUT when i wake up in the morning for some od reason it lost connection and never reconnected again. So i can hear online radio with the display out but after some hours w/o online radio and just in standby it loses wifi connection and never connects again
This issue is not new. There is a thread on the google forum many pages long. Nobody hase even a clue where it could come from. Some1 on the forum said if u call support they will tell its ur routers fault.
The n1 completly ignores the sleep policy settings.
I have rooted two g1s with goldcard and still using one w/o a problem.

Well, I know fore a fact it's not my access point. I am a network engineer and worked on wireless systems for years and debugging these types of problems is something I'm a bit obsessive about. This stinks of a software or driver problem to me. It could potentially be a hardware revision issue since we have a N1 that works perfectly in all scanerios.
I've tested this with the following access points:
Apple Airport Extreme
Apple Airport Express
Meru
Cisco 1231
Cisco 350
Belkin pre-n
Linksys WRT54G stock
Linksys WRT54G dd-wrt (I forget the build number)
Soekris Engineering running pfSense
All exhibit the same behavior, while my control devices (Apple iPhone 3g, Apple Macbook Pro and a MyTouch 3g running Cyanogen 2.1).
I wasn't aware that this was related to rooting, I'd be more than happy to move back to a stock ROM if that solved my problem. Maybe I'll try that today if I get some time.
Could you possibly post a link to the google forum you're referencing?
I'm currently digging through the alogcat output to see if there is anything interesting in there.
This issue is worse since I upgraded to 83. I'm actually holding off to try CM6 when it comes out to see if there is any better performance there. I'm not sure if he uses updated drivers or kernel that may give better wifi performance.

NO successful WIFI when flashing ANY ROMS - HELP!!!!

I don't understand...after flashing (successfully) many different ROM's I like (Darky's, FireFly, Phoenix, etc), everything works flawlessly EXCEPT the WIFI...it scans and finds all networks fine and even "connects"....however, the Internet, the Market, email, etc. never connects and always times out...even using Kies Mini to flash to the official AT&T Froyo 2.2. Literally, the ONLY ROM that allows me to use WIFI and actually WORKS is Eclair 2.1, which is extremely sh*tty!!!!! I've tried apps like FXR WIFI fixer, used linux commands from other posts, flashed/reflashed....NOTHING!!!!
What the hell am I doing wrong or not doing at all! I can't live with Eclair 2.1, but also can't live without properly working WIFI either (since my 2GB plan is $20 per month and is used up within 3 days with 3G enabled as the only option using other ROM's since WIFI is useless)....PLEASE HELP!!!!!! It's that, or I have to trade out my Captivate for another model....thank you in advance!
Not sure whats causing your issues but, no problems what so ever on serendipity (up to 5.12 now)
As a matter of fact im downloading at a minimum speed of 2mb per second
Just wondering if you might have changed your settings in the past. Did you ever use a static IP (from the advanced Wifi menu)? If so, you aren't going to be pointing at the right internet gateway, and you'll never get any connection to work. You need to go back to dynamic IPs.
Other than that, my wifi and GPS started to go flaky today, so, after a series of attempts at other things (nandroid restores, clearing the cache, uninstalling, etc) I re-flashed the same kernel. All is well and good now, for some reason.
Have you tried connecting to different wifi signals? Maybe its just the router. And what are you doing that uses 2 GB of data in 3 days?! My plan lasts me an entire month with wifi only at night and i had barely 1 GB last month.

wow.. must be tethering alot eh?
Hmm.. if it works on Eclair - I have no clue as to why it wouldn't be working after flash to a new ROM.
Now.. I did have it do the things you were experiencing recently though... I had a solid wireless connection - I had the correct IP address assigned to the phone. I could check my GMAIL and XDA (using the apps) But if I went to the browser - nadda. But after I rebooted the phone it started working fine.
I would try a few things out though..
Have you rebooted your router? I have the worlds crappiest Lynksys and have to reboot it every now and again.
Go into your phones wireless settings and have it forget your network, reboot your phone and try setting it up again. See what happens.
And I would definitely try another network... AT&T offers a ton of wireless hot spots here were I live and I abuse them to death
Let us know how it goes.

+1.
Those are all good things to try. And avgjoegeek, i had a handmedown linksys router for about 6 years and it drove me INSANE. I recently decided to fork over the extra cash for the best model "netgear." Makes a world of difference. Whenever i am trobleshooting, i can immeadately cross off the router as a problem lol.

Linksys = crap... Linksys + ddwrt = gold.
Judging from your info it sound to me like you have a hardware issue either on the phone or the router. Reset phone, router, and modem and try again.

WOW - a lot of great responses! Thank you to all who responded. I've tried EVERYTHING listed here with the exception of resetting my router. I WILL do that after flashing my next ROM (although hesitant). This issue happens no matter where I am (work, home, WIFI hotspots, etc)...it can't be a hardware issue, since it works flawlessly on Eclair....WEIRD! If the resetting of my router doesn't do the fix, I'll have to get another model phone...beats having to settle for Eclair, anyways!
Thank for all the suggestions and I WILL try the whole resetting of the router, although doubtfull. Thanks again!

Lost data/internet today...verizon rep hard reboot

So today my data/internet 3g went down...I could receive calls send texts but no 3G verizon rep needed with my cell for a while kept going on how task killer and lookout was bad for my cell and was likely causing the problem...whatever I said and he couldn't figure it out do he hard reset...guy mentioned saving apps to SD card so here come

Same here
I am losing 4g/3g pretty frequently now as well. When it goes off, it doesnt seem to want to come back - but a reboot does it.
The only thing I have kinda noticed is that if I am wifi, then leave the wifi area (thus disconnecting) it tends to drop the 4g as well and wont reconnect. I'll have to test this some more, but thats all I can tell so far.

I am having the same problem as you, between changing back and forth from wifi to 4g and loosing all connectivity besides voice. My girlfriend has a bionic as well and has no problems whatsoever. I also do have lookout installed and she doesn't so I will try uninstalling that to see if it help and check back. But it might be a faulty phone since my girlfriend is having none of my numerus problems. dropping 3g/4g, wifi super slow when my other verizon phone is having no problems with connectivity with 3g/wifi. randomly locks on me while Im using the phone and the timeout is set at 10 minutes. And one time it totally turned off, not even just a reboot. Anyways back to the connectivity, I will try uninstalling lookout and report back! Hopefully that works.
i think verizon is working on their towers and 4g as ive had alot of data issues too until yesterday when it seemed to resolve itself.
Hmm so it may be lookout... Well I installed it again so let's see how it goes on the wifi speed I had the problem the first day I connected to my home connection but as of late its all good. Is anyone else running lookout? Post what up with your bionic running lookout. The rep did say it might be just my cell in particular but seems I might not be the only one I guess will update as day goes

Ive been having the same problem with 3g. I stay on wifi most of the time but whenever I do have to leave the house or work, I will lose 3g at first.
At first, the only way I could find to fix it was with a power cycle. Since then, Ive discovered that turning on and off airplane mode seems to do the trick.
Next time you guys are having trouble, try toggling airplone mode once or twice. That has worked for me everytime.
It's not convenient, but I'm sure there is a fix in the works.
Oh nice i had tried to toggle airplane mode but just once ill give that a shot if i loose 3G again so far last night after hard reset and as of this morning everything running good even with lookout running... Might not even be lookout
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
It is definitely not lookout. Or any other useless battery drainer. Toggling airplane mode, rebooting, etc do nothing for me. It decides when it wants to come back.
I have had the same issue once today. It was alot more yesterday.
If it keeps up, I'll be taking it back.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
Airplane toggle hasnt done the trick for be. Just as a shot in the dark, I removed juice defender. I do not think that is the culprit here, but anything that controls my radios is suspect at this point.
Huh i just thought about something yesterday in the morning i saw a post Bout someone developing an fm radio app and thinking about it now after i installed it thats when i started having issues... Just throwing that out there i didnt even use it though but i havent re installed it either so i dont know if that even the problem

I am not rooted yet and haven't applied any hacks/tweaks. My data connection drops whether Im in a 4G or 3G area, automatic or CDMA only.
Seems to happen randomly although this last time it happened after unplugging the Bionic from charging. Toggling airplane mode restores data temporarily. Verizon will probably issue an OTA update soon to fix this but I hope it doesn't break the root exploit or I won't install. Once we have a working ClockworkMod recovery the ROM chefs should be able to fix this...
I heard the verizon rep say that his bionic did the same thing when it was charging via computer because it was in debug mode so you might want to look into that if you charging via a computer... Maybe?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I've been experimenting a bit today and it seems that anytime my phone switches between data types, the signal goes down until a power cycle or toggling airplane mode. It happens the most when my phone goes from wifi to 3g. Whenever I leave my wifi area (work or home), the phone fails to find a 3g connection. This also happens if I manually turn off Wifi. If I've been on a wifi connection for a good amount of time and then disconnect the wifi, the phone won't find 3g.
Not sure if it has to do with my settings, but figured I'd mention them here.
Most of the time, I am in a 3g area so I keep my phone on cdma only unless I'll be traveling to a 4g area. Not sure if changing the settings to CDMA/LTE will change anything but I'm going to try that next.
Anyway, this is definitely something that needs to be brought up with both Verizon and Motorola. The more people who notice and say something, the faster we'll get a fix...at least in theory.
I switched to Verizon from Sprint and I'm not going back. Despite the issues, Verizon's 3g has been 5-6 times faster than the 3g I got with Sprint. Besides that, I should have 4g by the end of the year and the 25 Mbps down I am getting in surrounding 4g areas is killer. Just hope my switch to Verizon wasn't in vane. There isn't another phone on their network that even looks halfway appealing at this time and I can't wait a month for the Vigor or anything else to come out. Plus I like motorola build quality. So, let's hope a DEV or Motorola and Verizon gets this fixed on the fly cause its definitely an annoying issue.
Anyhow, if anyone finds a workaround or solution to this better than toggling airplane mode, please let us know. Starting to get tired of pulling out my phone looking for something, only to find out that I don't have data.

Network issue? It might have a limited connectivity situation going on and trying to continuously authenticate with your router.

Yeah, it used to work fine, could it be an app I downloaded, or some superuser privelages messing it up? My phone used to freeze regulrly when too many apps requested superuser privs. No sure if same issue...

Is it possible to try connecting to a different network and see what happens? My D3 did the same thing and it turns out I just needed to reboot my router. I figured it out by going up to Starbucks where the phone connected just fine.
Definitely hardware. I had the same problem on my previous stock droid 3. Just went out one day. Took it to verizon and they sent me a replacement. Unroot and get a new one.
Also, gps stopped working around the same time. I wonder how widespread faulty hardware is now considering a lot of people with gps problems and if they might see wifi failing soon..

[Q] Grayed out USB Tethering setting?

I have the GT-7000 and I am to understand that both mobile hotspot and usb tethering come as default features. ive seen a simple guide on how to get it working and it basiscally states the obvious: Check it on. The wireless hotspot is no problem, its working, but the usb hotspot option is forever grayed out and I cannot turn it on. Tried every stupid simple thing but it never becomes selectable. I downloaded and installed pdanet and that works fine but i want to know why the native setting isnt functional so I can just hot swap between computers without having to go through that install process on each computer wherever I may be. Anyone?
EDIT: For some odd reason the next time I tried on another day the option became select-able. I still dont know the reason it stayed grayed out before but at least its working now. So yay =)
