Right now I am currently running HC v4 and the stock browser I feel is an improvement from when I was running the stock nook browser. I haven't tried any other roms, but which rom do you feel provides the fastest and smoothest (rendering pinch to zoom) browsing experience with the stock android browser?
By far HC. But that is because pre-HC stock browsers suck.
The HC browser is one of the main reasons i cant go back to 2.x

I just wanted a few more opinions on this,
I tried the many custom Froyo roms out there and they all seem pretty sluggish compared to the official froyo 2.2 rom. I have Launcher Pro installed and boy the official froyo is lightning fast.
Is anyone else noticing this lack in speed/performance or maybe I am not putting in the correct settings? I tried kings rom, it was choppy compared to Original, AsimRom (themed) also choppy again compared to Original and Modaco's Rom didnt have the Phone App on my phone so I didnt bother installing it again. Please do not think I am complaining, I just needed a third party opinion, maybe I do not have the right settings on. I really want to have deodexed with other features that come with Custom roms.
Thanks
Official??
not customized, only recooked for rooted phones.
So after 2 awful years with a first gen Blackberry storm I decided to make the jump to android with the captivate. Originally I was holding out for the Nexus S as I really wanted a vanilla Android experience (I have a deep hatred for bloatware) but unfortunately around where I live it appears Verizon and AT&T are the only ways to go if you want any sort of decent coverage.
Anyways, I've been doing a bunch of research and watching videos the past week I've decided to flash either Perception (build 8) or Cognition (probably 2.3b6) and am leaning towards P8 as of now. I am wondering how much of these ROMs is vanilla android.
I realize from what I've read/watch that the touchwiz launcher is removed in both of these roms as well as the AT&T bloatware, but is much of the other base applications such as mail, media player, etc is still the samsung apps?
Basically, I'm wondering how close to vanilla android will the launcher/interface be with one of these Roms (obviously the roms include some additional apps, I guess I mean just the basic functionality/interface).
Also, is there a major difference between running a rom such as Perception or Cog opposed to simply unlocking/lag fixing and removing bloatware as far as general speed and lag. I know these roms are using leaked Froyo firmware opposed to the stock eclair I would have if I did not flash, but I'm curious how big of a leap in performance it is.
Thanks for the responses, hopefully my questions make sense, my captivates not coming till Monday (bought it through Amazon wireless) and I've been reading random android forums seemingly nonstop.

I always click thanks button before quote button now! Oh well.
I know cognition has twlauncher, not sure about perception (I don't remember..)
All custom ROMs have bloatware removed at your convenience. I'd say froyo is definitely faster. Either voodoo lagfix from xcal's kernel or lagfix from SetiroN's kernel gives a big performance increase. Cognition is based on a captivate rom whereas perception is based on an i9000 ROM.
No ROMs right now provide complete vanilla experience. I believe I read it somewhere that the Galaxy S line devices use rfs loops whereas usual android uses ext and this causes a problem for devs to port over vanilla android or other skins like HTC Sense. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong?) As of currently all the stable ROMs are based on froyo leaks with captivate, vibrant, or i9000.
I've tried many variations with stock roms, rooted, lag fixed etc. I currently use the cognition rom, latest one. It is much faster and better than the stock. It has voodoo lagfix built in. I haven't tried p8, because I like the cognition so well. I definately recommend giving cognition a try. I was also going to try Axura, but haven't for the same reason.

Try Assonance or Axura. IMO they're more vanilla than Cognition or Perception.
Thanks for all the info all.
Honestly I haven't even looked into assonance or axura, are they as stable as Cog/Perception?
quarlow, when you say you use the latest version of Cog do you mean b6 or b7? I know b7 just came out a day or two ago. I'd stick with the non-oc versions, seems like they tend to have alot less issues from what I've read.
My bad, I'm using b6, I didn't know there was already another version. Yeah ... I don't do the oc thing. I have a hard enough time between charges without adding oc. It really is screaming fast already.

I haven't really tried Cognition or Perception, but I've tried both Axura and Assonance and both ROMs seemed really stable.
ah jeez, now that I've been looking into it, I think I'm gonna go with assonance. Seems like its alot more stable than either Cog/Perception from what people are saying.
Just curious though, how fast/smooth does it run? Compared to stock and/or Cog/Perception?
Axura gets my vote
Stable and fast without needing to overclock
Need to use google voice for vm notifications though

All 2.2 Roms are smooth and fast compared to stock. Assonance will be your most vanilla (least amount of Samsung apps). Auxura is heavily themed and no where near vanilla. Plus it's based off of leaked Vibrant and I'm not a big fan (though I'm definitely in the minority here). Personal favorite is di11igaf's Rom. It is also heavily themed, but all themes can be changed and it works the best as far as functionality (my opinion, of course).

I'll second this. di11igaf's ROM is the most stable and fastest I've used. It might not be "vanilla" since it is themed, but the dark theme on it is so nice. You'll like it. I've flashed this for friends at work and they all love it and they have no more forced close issues, whereas they complained frequently about FCs with Cognition.
If you don't mind beta software, CyanogenMod is the best. It's actually built from AOSP code, with only Samsung drivers. All the other custom roms are just modified versions of the stock rom/leaked rom.
I run perception 8 with gingerbread theme and vanilla apps injected in place of sammy ones... so I kinda feel like im running gingerbread

I'm loving my Nook Color (especially for $199!) so far... great device... Still can't believe something with a good CPU and an IPS screen was only 200 bucks.
I'm currently running stock (1.1) rooted (with AutoNooter)... I use Zeam, softkeys, etc.
I'm curious what the advantages of Nookie Froyo are compared to stock. So far I'm thinking:
Copy/Paste
Flash support
I assume some apps that require Froyo
Is there anything else? Does Froyo deliver better performance? How is video playback on Froyo compared to stock? Any differences?
Are there any downsides to Froyo compared to stock?
I'm sure I'll move to Froyo (and then Honeycomb) eventually... just trying to decide if I want to do it now or later (esp since I'll have to reload all my books... although calibre should make that easy)
i believe froyo introduced JIT for faster performance.
like any OS upgrade.. there are, um.. upgrades.
But mostly for me, besides speed and the newer OS, it's Flash.
From search the board more it seems that we lose the built-in reader app when going to Froyo. I suppose i can then use the Nook Market app, but I've heard that's not as good.
If that's the case it seems to be a somewhat significant "con" if you use the reader a lot
Yes, the stock Nook reader is nice. However, try Aldiko. They released a new version recently and I like it more than the stock Nook reader. Free download from the market.
A few things to add:
1. B&N App for NC is ok if you don't buy the kids books (you cannot download at all in the B&N App so this maybe a deal breaker for you). Other books are fine.
2. Just one thing to add about Flash. Flash allows you to render webpages as it was originally intended (so no big gaps in the webpage). I don't play flash games or video but just don't like gaps in webpages. May not be an issue if you use AdBlock or don't like flash ads.
3. Not sure if you can do this in autonootered stock but check the overclock options in Froyo. This definitely add a performance increase (but you need SetCPU and an OC kernel like Dalingren).
Personally am running NC 0.6.8 as my daily driver off an Class 6 microSD overclocked to 1.1. I forget I am running off a microSD. I still have the option of stock autonootered but have never gone back.

Thanks for the tip! I actually have Aldiko installed, but I haven't tried it much yet... I'll have to give it a whirl
I was browsing Anantech, and saw an article on the Droid RAZR's browser. I was wondering if it was possible to port it over to our Droid 3? Wondering if any devs can look into this?
Here is the Article

Who uses stock browser anyway?
....
Motorola's stock browser is actually really good, much better then anything out there. I have had so many issues with Dolphin, Opera, and Skyfire (havent even tried mozilla, heard to many bad things plus no flash). I dont know if you have even messed with the stock browser, but its pretty amazing, I dont know what they have done to it, but its not the same thing that comes with ASOP android. I have used the stock one on my xoom, and its horrible.
Try Miren Browser
Stock browser is great now with Gingerbread, Opera was a better choice for Froyo tho bak in the day.
Wish we had the hardware accelerated browser of the GS2 tho, that would be the ****.

Have to agree. Miren kept force closing on my xoom, gonna stick with stock on boot, still trying to get thhe browser.apk from the razr board to see if it works in the droid 3
@ anarchy4sale
How'd you go with grabbing the browser apk?
-smc
Just curious. Please share your thought.
Quite smooth. Apart from a second of lag when application is just launched. No flash.

Stock ics browser seems to have better performance.
(on chinese release)
chrome beta- nice ui
buttery smooth
but no user-agent option
no flash support
no exit button in menu
One force close otherwise works on the Chinese leak. I like the tabs.
I like Chrome more than the stock browser. The way it zooms subtly when filling in entries, etc. This should have been the stock browser for Android.
installed it. quite good actually. but the adblock software does not work on it. doesn't help if you are on a limited bandwidth subscription from your carrier.
i'll stick with it, otherwise opera mini for those websites that are 'blocked' by my carrier.
It's been an amazing experience and chrome beta works smooth... There is nt much lag also and quite fun...
Lots of feedback!
I am jealous. I didn't tried the first ICS leak. Waiting for standard leak!
I find Chrome Beta to be better than the Chinese stock browser, mostly because it looks good. Speed wise it might be a bit slower though, but not by much. I like how it zooms into some tricky areas where a lot of links are confined into a small space(Page index for example)
Im loving chrome browser. I have no complaints. Dont have to worry about losing bookmarks and such now and its extremely smooth.

i have tried but to be honest i didnt like. I prefer opera mobile browser
