I find the WM7 calendar to be the worst feature of the phone. No Week view, no colour organising, no config settings etc etc
But what's really bugging me is the default time slots when you add an appointment. I run a rehearsal studio and the majority of the appointments I book are 3 or 4 hours.
The calendars defaults go 0mins, 30mins, 1hr, 90mins, 2hr, All day.
Does anyone know if these defaults can be changed to something that is more useful to me. I've looked in the registry but not really sure what I should be looking for.
And how come there are no alternative calendars on Marketplace??
You don't get a straight up week view, but scrolling up or down to jump days is simple and quick. Or, just pop to the month view and tap the day you want. That's also fast.
For a new appointment, the last option is Custom, and will allow any time frame you choose.
No answers for your other issues. Maybe these coming updates will alter some calendar features and functions.
Thanks but that doesn't really help at all...
Firstly no Days when scrolling, just dates. Clients always ask for "next thursday" or "sunday evening" etc. I have to work out of look up what the date would be then
Secondly the custom option, you need to enter the end time in manually. its just a pain when you have to enter somthing like 18:30.
Copy and paste would solve 50% of the issues as a lot of clients can just be copied and pasted to their new date.
Other than this issue, I actually really like the phone.
Yes, you get days and dates when scrolling. If I tap my calendar tile, which takes me to Today, scroll up (for force the calendar down), it shows, right at the top, Friday, March 04, 2011.
If you dont know the date for the thursday after next, just tap the Month button at the bottom. BAM, Thursday after next is the 17th.
Copy and Paste will arrive shortly, though I doubt very much it will alleviate the issues you state.
on mine, the top of the calendar just displays "04 MARCH 2011" whether I'm in agenda view or day view. No day.
copy and paste would help as with most clients I just copy their 7-10pm slot and paste it to next week 7pm... in theory!
On WM6.5 I used "agenda one" and it did everything I needed. I find it odd that there is not a single replacement calendar available on marketplace.
What is this "WM7" of which you speak?

That's strange. My calender also shows the day as well as the date at the top of the screen.

My HD7 doesnt show a day either. Odd that it is different for different people.
I have to agree with the OP. The calendar is truly awful. I too do not have days listed in agenda or day view, only the date ! I seem to recall seeing in a early preview video of WP7 in the monthly view it showed colour bars on the days to indicate which entry belonged to different calendars. But mine doesn't do this, and it would be nice if it did. It would allow me to differentiate between work and personal appointments etc. whilst in monthly view which is what I use the most for a "glance and go" experience.
My solution, to continue carrying my TP2, and continue using Pocket Informant, IMHO, the best calendar available. Until WP7 allows the option to colour code days, support categories, allows multiple icons on a day, in monthly view, then I don't see any other option.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing WP7, I love my HD7, but I always knew version 1 would be lacking in functionality, and I'm a heavy calender user, often with 10 plus appointments a day, in multiple categories, so WP7 just doesn't cut in at the moment, which is my only real gripe at present.

Mine does this (Windows Live is blue, Outlook is Red)
Scratch that... wow... the monthly view USED to, I swear. Maybe because I disabled the Live calendar for a time... hmmm
Colours in the Calendar are used to distinguish between the calendars of different accounts, you cannot assign colours to events without putting the event into the appropriate account.
For instance, the calendar in Windows Live might be purple, and the one from Google Mail might be red. Your event will either be purple or red depending on whether it resides in the Windows Live calendar or the Google one.
Changing the Long date in the Regional settings does not give you the weekday in the Calendar app.
Odd, maybe the date thing is a US v. Euro issue?

Change display language to US and then the date can include the day.

Thanks. I can confirm that works.
Are there any other effects of changing the display language from Uk to US ?
I'd still like to find out about displaying a coloured bar on individual days within the monthly view denoting which calendar the entries belong too. I'm sure I saw this feature in a video preview ???

Yes, this certainly works. It is a long-standing problem with MS Phones; the old Windows-Mobile suffered from the same problem, but at least it was possible to tweak the registry to fix it.
For some reason, Microsoft seems to believe that Europeans do not use the day-name in their calendars. . I wish there was some way of telling them that they are wrong

I haven't come across any weird things. There are 12/24 hour settings somewhere which I changed to 24 hour as well as tweaking the short and long date display to be as I want them. Quite happy with that all now.

When I have multiple appointments on my Today screen, it shows a maximum of two, and if I have more than two coming up (say, tomorrow) but I'm still on today's appointment, it will show the first appointment for tomorrow and then as soon as my current appointment is finished, it'll update to show both of tomorrow's...

Yes - exactly - I want display more than two - say 3 or 4 - there must be a way to it since plug-ins can display?
Does PPC work the same way as Smartphone? ie - XML for the homescreens?
To achieve this, you'll need a Today plugin which offers this kind of functionality... The first that springs to mind has got to be Pocket Breeze ( http://www.sbsh.net/products/pocketbreeze/ ) - I don't use it myself, but I think I may try it out sometime soon (saw it a while back, noted it, but never got round to trying it out).
Or if you're either a dab hand at programming (or know someone who's fearless enough to undertake some) then you could always try writing your own Today screen plugin...
http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/sampchap/5461a.asp#100
SPB Diary will also accomplish the same thing. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=17704&associateid=17
Hmmm....not sure about Pocket Breeze thing - it's a bit much for just one function! And I like a nice clean Today screen - PB just make it look "busy".
Looks like I'll have to read-up on xml - unless anybody else knows a simple solution?
Cheers
Did some more browsing, found some goodies on PocketPCFreewares:

tAgenda 1.1
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=565
Calendar+ 2.2.10

Both look pretty good, I think I'll try them both.
Greets,
I recently was duped into thinking a meeting, which was a week away, was actually that day ... because the Tilt shows the next appointment regardless of how far in the future that appointment is.
Does anyone know how to set the Tilt to show only appoints for the current day?
Thanks!
Start \ Settings \ Today \ Items \ Calendar \ Options has 3 Selections:
Display : Next Appointment (Radio Button)
Display : Upcoming Appointments (Radio Button)
and a check box to display all day events.
From what I am seeing in the options, unless you have selected upcoming appointments, you can't change it. I haven't used the default calendar in a LONG time, and never in WM6. There might be a registry entry you could change, but I have no idea on how to "phrase" the search.
There are many 3rd party programs that can display your calendar. I use pocket breeze, but there are others, and even a couple of good freebies.
I personally use PocketBreeze also and you don't have to worry about this with all of the settings (its just trying to get all of the dang settings configured right as there are SO MANY! ).
TodayAgenda is a free app that works pretty well and may resolve this for you. Check it out (a lot of people use it here). I paid for PocketBreeze and like the speed of it better, and the tabs it gives for different things on the Today Screen.
SPB Diary?
The SPB line of software seems to be really comprehensive ... I am looking thru the SPB Diary manual to try to see if it would work too.
Anyone tried Calendar+? I used it on my PPC 6700 - not sure if it supports WM6 - was a very small and basic calendar replacement that was very customizable.

It is annoying and you would have thought Microsoft would have upgraded some of the internal apps by now (been like this since CE!) I fell into the same trap as you earlier in the year. Not wanting to add another package, I then started actually putting the date/time on the Title of my appointments which shows up on the today screen.
I previously used a Treo 650 and had a simple calendar program on there called Month Planner.
http://mytreo.net/downloads/monthplanner,751.html
I'm looking for something like this.
-Small, simple program that is very quick to load, replacing only the calendar and NOT the contacts or tasks.
-Includes a number of icons for various appointments, holidays, etc.
-Defaults to a Month view every time you run the program (i like to always start out with a month view, then select the specific day from there).
-Accidental tap proof (doesn't jump straight into a DAY view if you mis-tap the wrong square. Instead you hold the stylus to add event otherwise it lists the events on that day at the top or bottom of the screen).
Is there anything out there that can mimic the functionality, interface, and speed of this old program?
I really like the one that is built in to the OS
you can try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326891
i believe the developer has abandonned the project(Its ashame), but it is pretty simple and intuitive

Search for thumbcal
Maynot have the icons feature but its very simple and finger friendly. Load very quick and straight to monthly view.
It keeps me on track of all the tasks and appointment . In the end, it is you who commit to the tasks , not the calendar. Thats why I only need something simple.
Search for ThumbCal great program.
ThumbCal looks nice, I may try it out. I just prefer the icons to help me easily discern between actual meetings and tasks vs. holidays and birthdays without having to select each day for more detail it's also nice to be able to tell the difference between the type of meetings and events through selected icons. yeah i'm lazy but maybe there's a program to cater to that laziness monthplanner did it on the Treo so I'm hoping something similar can eventually be found on Windows Mobile.

I really like the size of the one built into the OS. Now if I could just get it to NOT jump straight into the day when I tap one of the boxes within the month AND be able to add icons for events, that'd be perfect. just some slight additions and I'd be happy. No need to completely overhaul the thing :-D
Hey,
The application herein allows you to quickly type in an event/appointment in plain (well, somewhat formatted) english. You can then save it to your calendar. That's pretty much all it does, but it's quick at it (or will be, one day), and if you shortcut-it, it's quicker to do than using the stylus (IMHO).
Examples of use:
Meet friends for breakfast tomorrow at 6:30AM-9:30AM
Buy flowers today at 6:30PM
Go home tomorrow at 18:30
Meeting with bankers tomorrow at 17:00-19:00
Bar-hopping today at 20-23
Celebrate New Year's Eve on 1/1/2009 at 6:45PM-9PM
Have breakup discussion with girlfriend today at 18 for 30 minutes
Disclaimers:
- Only English supported.
- Default time for meeting is 30 minutes
- No recurring meeting supported
- The formatting is <Event> [today/tomorrow/at <date>]
- Dates are locale-specific, so I gather you'll have to find out what's yours.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
PS: I really don't know if something like this already exists, so I've decided to write it myself just for the hell of it as an exercise.

excellent, thankyou! just what i need!
But i dont think it would take me that long to break it off with the girlfriend, but id best save that one as a template
It would be really great when some recurrent values could be preset.
Good to see that there's some interest. I whipped this up in a couple of hours and wanted to get a feel to whether there's a client-base.
I'm open for any requests, and would appreciate examples of how you would best be comfortable entering them (for instance, as above, recurrance).
Feel free to use sentences, as that's what I'll be trying to parse out

Combine this functionality with a speach recognition feature and it goes from being a nifty applet to a commercial application.
Great work!!!! just what I needed, I would make it so that when u dont write a date, it should be today...
I don't see how writing it out is any quicker than using other programs. A combination of radio buttons and/or one tap calendars seems to be quicker than writing out a date format. My 2 cents...
I agree that it really doesn't seem to save any time in its present format.
When most people enter a new appointment, they are already looking at their calendar. So, for example:
I'm looking through my calendar and I see I want to add an appointment on July 2, 2008 - I would need to switch to your program and type in July 2 for the appointment - rather than just clicking on the date I was already looking at.
DateBook 5/6 (Palm OS) had a wonderful feature whereas once you were on the date you would simply start typing numbers and that would be the time of the appointment - and it would assume am or pm based on your normal work hours. Further, if you wanted an all-day appointment, you would just start typing the subject matter and it would fill it in - no taps at all. I know this doesn't really resemble what you're working on, but this seems to me to be the absolute easiest way to input appts.
Alternatively, speech recognition combined with your program would be something I would pay for.
Thanks for sharing your program and keep up the good work.
Similar functionality is offered by cozi and google calendar. However, I do have to agree with a few it is a pain to type something on the pda. Much faster to tap.
Also, I own an XDA IIi and it cannot send or receive appointments as text messages. I know that this is possible on the nokia phones. I'd love this feature on the xda as well. Does anyone know of any application that can send and receive appointments as text messages?
Any help will be greatly appreciated
I have read a lot about people who are looking for a solution to show more than 1 or sometimes 2 calender events under "the big clock" in TF3D home screen.
I have searched thrue whole xda but i couldn't find a solution for this except for using third party software....
Is there anybody who can tweak this or do a registry add. so that it will show all todays appointments and or upcoming app.
Sorry for my bad english, but i know that a lot of people also wants this so please help!
I wonder what could be done as there is not enough space for more than one line as far as I see.

you know you can slide the clock up right!
i was also looking for this problem but didn't find anything
afaik now, this is an issue with WM. it always shows only the next appointment.
if you want to display more appointments, you need a plugin (e.g. TodayAgenda)
there must be someone here with a solution....
indeed we can scroll the time up but then we loose the funky themed Hellboy clock
What we really need is the ability to turn off functions we dont need, for example, I don't need "Alarm" or "Call history" displayed. If these were removed from this screen then there would be enough space for another 2 calender entries. Indeed, why do we even need the word "Calender" displayed, is this not obvious from the text below it i.e. the appointment/birthday etc???
it is not an windows mobile issue !
if you disable tf3d you will see more than one ore two entries; if configured in the today section of wm.
it is an issue concerning tf3d afaik without a solution yet.
regards
t.

Use advanced config to change what appointments are shown on your home screen. I have mine set to 'next appointment, and all todays events.' 2 appointments show only when I have an appointment on the current and the next. Still want it to show my next appointment regardless of how far ahead it is. Anyone else had any luck?

That doesn't allow TF3D to show more than one all day event though. Not on mine anyhow
Not just the Calendar show only tomorrow and not day after, the fonts are too small and not using System fonts that define in Screen>> Text,
The solution is to use Second Today screen, so u can add extarnal free program like Today Agenda with many many options..
I would have thought that the advanced config people could change the option to simply "show x no. of apointments". I have the clock minimised and there is loads of space with blank tiles at the bottom of the screen for another 2 appointments

Agreed. On the face of it it doesn't seem like it would be too tricky to fix but the lack of a solution deems otherwise. We sit and wait.
if u use s2u2 can u display up to 6 events in a maximum range of 100 days...
obiviously it's all displayed in the unlock screen!
I use the s2u2 method mentioned above.
I have to say that its an elegant solution, I can check my appointments by just touching the power button without even having to unlock.
Have to agree with S2UL as the solution to your problem! Give it a try, you'll be impressed.
