Alright, so I'm running Nookie Froyo (customized?) and Sometimes my SD card has problems mounting but I just pop it in and out and it goes.
However, Gallery and Music are not picking up any of the music I have stored on there.
Similarly, when I use Astro to play most of the videos I have, it FC's. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Off the top of my head I'd say for the video issue verify the format is compatible (h.264 baseline with a resolution at or below 854x480 for example) and short of that use ROM manager to fix permissions, reboot into recovery and wipe cache and then check again.
On the custom emmc 0.6.8 build I'm finding that the best thing for me is to re-encode my videos using handbrake with the custom preset found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894165
I've tried various video players and have settled for just using the stock player and uninstalling all others. I sometimes get video rotating into portrait mode which I resolve by jumping into Youtube app and running a video while rotating into landscape mode and then jumping back into gallery. Seems to often kick the movie player back into playing in landscape as it's supposed to.
As for music, I haven't tried loading my SD card with MP3's so I can't comment on that.
Hope this helps.
Hey thanks, helped me out too haha.
Does HandBrake have a batch convert/process option?
If it doesn't, I need a program that does.
I used freemake to do the conversion for my nook, and it worked great. But, you do have to be careful what video size, audio and video codecs, bitrate, and file extension that you pick.

It has. Press "Soucre->Add folder", all video files will appear in title list. Simply switch titles and add them to queue.
Honestly, call me dumb. But I clicked "Source> Add folder" Then Start and it only converted 1 file.
EDIT: Sorry ,I figured it out.

Can anyone recommend what settings i should have my TCPMP player on my Tilt for playing video. when i go to youtube, it lags quite i bit, so i just figured it was one of those things i have to deal with when using a pda and going to a site like youtube. but i put a video file on my storage card and played it and it lags quite a bit, probably even worst than playing something on youtube, i went to the recommend settings for tcpmp but that doesn't seem to work for a video i play directly off my storage card, any ideas on who to get less lag, i'm also using version .81RC1. Thanks
Hi!
I use "Raw FramePuffer" or "GDI" under OPTIONS - VIDEO.
Just not "DirectDraw" - It looked really bad with that...
I stream Divx/Xvid files over WLAN and from microSD and it's OK.
I've tried those options, but i still get the lag, it plays a little better in wmp, but still laggy, could it be something w/the video i put on my card, i didn't convert it to anything, mainly because i dont know how, i just put the card in my usb adapter and plugged it into my computer and copied the file to the card. Or could it be something i need to change under settings? because like i mentioned i do get the lag while playing youtube.
anyone else have any ideas on how to get tcpmp to play video's w/o much lag? i'm getting quite a bit on files i put on my storage card, it's basically unwatchable.

Had the same problem. Until I resized/re-encoded the videos with eRightSoft SUPER video converter (Free). The key is to using the "DIVX / AVI Pocket PC" as the output format.
If this doesnt work then I would try a different SD Card.
I put a 4000kb buffer in TCPMP to get normal "xvid" TV episodes working. It's a little choppy, but certainly usable. I didn't notice battery draining more than normal, and for not having to spend hours reencoding video, the occasional choppiness is okay.
Yes, the best way is to recode the video files. I don't use no fancy app for this, just windows movie maker has that option to scale it to pocket pc or any format you like. Works quit well.
Link to SUPER video converter
This a link to the free software I use SUPER. I also included a screenshot with the settings that work for me. Enjoy

I found these settings on another forum and apparently they help, but I still can not play and mp4 file I encoded for the iPhone. I haven't tried other encodings, but I have seen some poeple (in addition to the OPs comment below) say DivX is one of the better types for the Tilt.
Windows Mobile Core Player Settings
I experienced the same thing on mine. I'm using TCPMP and I've found that the following steps help relieve some of the problems.
1. Options/Video:
Change from DirectDraw to Raw FrameBuffer
Uncheck "Dither" (whatever that is)
2. Options/Video/Pixel Aspect Ratio: set to Auto
3. Options/Settings/Advanced
Check "Slow Video Memory"
4. Options/Settings/Buffering
Change "Preload at Underrun" to 85%
Note: I'm using PocketDIVxEncoder to convert everything to AVI files with the right audio/video size and format and I've tweaked the rom quite a bit. The most important setting change I've found to improve response of programs/video came from the vx6700 forums:
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/GLYPHCACHE/limit
change setting to either 32758 or 65536
I've tried both, and I'm using 32758 because it's a smaller memory footprint, but 65536 appears slightly faster.
dither 'smooths' out the colour gradients - so you dont see the nasty blockiness you get from high compression so much - also helps make the 16bit depth look a bit better
What about streaming video from your computer and re-encoding it on the stream server? Windows Media Server, VLC, and probably other apps can do this. I think Orb does this. Can anyone offer a comparison between TCPMPing divxs over the network and Orb-ing the same file?
I have tried ORB at home and it seems to work OK, but in order to really use it, you need to have a good network connection. So you are adding in yet another variable (and one which is almost completely unpredictable) to affect playback. Supposedly, ORB or Sling or whatever stream method you are using will detect your bandwidth and push you the best rate for your connection, but no connection means no playback. As an example, I couldn't get MobiTV to work over edge at all, which is promoted by AT&T as the way to watch TV on your phone. Right...
Hi, new here etc etc.. was wondering if anyone could explain how im supposed to watch mp4-files (Anime) on my Hero?
I dont wanna void my warranty on it.. is it possible doing this ?
Sry for making a post that probably exists.. but im not good with forums
Thx
IIRC, on an HTC standard build, there's no "visible" video player (I could be wrong though!). However, if you have a file manager (e.g, Astro), you can browse your SD card and open it as a video file in a built in player (sorry, I'm running a 2.1 ROM now, so things are probably different for me).
However, the easiest option is just to download a video player from the Market. Personally, I use Meridian.
Regards,
Dave
i like "video Player" from the market, just install, and pop the mp4 into the video folder that "video player" creates on your sdcard!

yeah i use meridian too! so far not much issue. except for some videos looping back to the first frames. according to the dev of meridian its a known android bug which will be there until it gets fix in the OS itself i guess.
Without a video player app all videos will be shown in your gallery under, surprise surprise, "video's". When you click on a video there it will open the native HTC hero video app.
Don't need a file manager like Astro. Just go into Albums (HTC standard app), then click on All videos" and choose the video you want. It will open up in the native HTC video player.
However as others have said there are plenty of better ones in the market.
So as we all know the Nook Color has hardware video decoding maxed at 854x480, 1100 kbps. After reading the handbrake thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894165 I found that while handbrake produces excellent video, the audio is much too quiet for my needs.
After much searching and testing I have finally found a great converter that not only looks good, but allows audio gain adjustments as well.
Get Any Video Converter from here (Free):
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
They also have a paid version to rip DVDs if you would like to support the developer and have a nice all-in-one app.
Setup is pretty easy with AVC...
(after you select video to convert and set up output file directory etc)
Click on output profile
Select customized mp4 movie
Scroll down to frame size and manually input 854x480
Scroll down to video bitrate and manually input 1100
Click on Edit tab up at the top of the screen
Select options
Select audio
Set volume control to 8db
Click ok
Click Convert button
Just wanted to share what I have found to be a great alternative to Handbrake
Let me know if you like it or hate it...
Yeah, that's a nice conversion app. Personally, I like using Freemake Video Converter. This has everything that does, but it's also got a bunch of presets all setup to make converting a breeze. For example, to convert a movie I already downloaded...
Add Video, Click on "To Android" at the bottom, and it's running. Very painless. =)

I'm also a freemake fan, does all I want less one thing. Is it possible to get it to normalize the audio levels? I know handbrake does have this feature.
Unfortunately the NC speaker is a bit gimpy and points backwards.
Something else to note, the nook can do better than 1100 kbps with software decoding. I have a video at 1800k plus that plays pretty smoothly, I'm thinking something around 1500k would probably work well. (Haven't tested)
Mike
I just downloaded Freemake to check it out.
I did not see any way to adjust audio which is the main feature I was looking for.
Did not see any option to normalize audio either.
It does have a nice layout and features.
AVC still wins for this feature IMO
(yes it also has the normalize option)
Thanks lafester. I tested it with your settings and it worked great. The only thing was that, for me, the movie I was testing (which happens to be a musical) had a bit too much reverb. I may try it again at a lower volume setting.
I also tested the Pro version, mainly because I'm hoping to still find something that can rip and covert in one step, but at those settings the audio and video weren't in sync. So, I guess I have to stick to using two steps.
let us know what settings end up working for you.
seems like I saw some sync settings as well?
not sure ad I haven't tried ripping yet.
Thanks for this. I ripped a DVD with the paid DVD ripper and it looked and sounded great. Only complaint is that it was not full screen vertically, only horizontally. That is to say, there are black bars (like letterbox) above and below the video but the video window does go all the way to the right and left of the Nook's screen. Maybe it is just because the DVD is widesreen format?
I used lafester settings for AVC on Office Space, and the audio is out-of-sync with the lips. Not sure how to correct this if it is even possible?? I will probably try Freemake to see if it is any better.

I fixed that problem by reading the FAQ on the app's website.
Thanks for that writeup. One suggestion, though. Put [HOW TO] or something to that effect in the title.

OK, after following the audio/video sync FAQ, I set the "Default Sync Factor" to 24 which is what AVC showed on their site. Will see how it turns out...

Late reply but many people find it easier to use MakeMKV - which can rip pretty much anything on optical media - to turn the Blu-ray content into a single MKV file (can have everything inside that one file too) and then feed that MKV to HandBrake where it can get to work.
MakeMKV has been around for many years now, it's in perpetual beta apparently so, give that a shot.
Any Video Converter Problem
Just downloaded AVC. Simple to instal and looks very uncomplicated. Conversion worked but audio and video are violently out of sync. Tried output to AVI and also MP4. It seems the video is converting at a much slower rate than the audio resulting in the non-sync. The audio finishes 8-10 seconds before the video on a one-and-a-half minute clip. What am I doing wrong? I used to convert video with a free web-based application called Acethinker Video Converter, never had that problem.
I need to know what settings or what file type of video files I can use on my NC running phiremod 6.3. I am using handbrake. I have a ton (about 500) movies on my computer currently ecoded with Nero recode into a ipod classic format. The file type is .mp4. The nook can't seem to play them. I then converted them using the handbrake regular "high" setting. After it got done, the nook couldn't play it. I was using double twist as my player.
What am I doing wrong? or what do I need to do differently? Thanks.
I am taking a long trip and I don't want to take my laptop to watch movies, that is why I am putting them on there.
You have to encode the videos in a VERY particular way (just like iDevices). Here is how:
http://mrm3.net/nook-colorhow-to-convert-videos/
Thanks. Perfect. Exactly what I needed. Already converted a couple of shows.
I am trying to play video over the network. I have done this on my phone but I just cannot get it working on the TouchPad.
My problem is that whatever client I use, skifta, bubbleupnp, upnplay, they all use the stock android video player. I have installed several other video players such as mobo, vlc, and mx. Unfortunately I cannot get any of the Dona/upnp apps to use them. This wasn't an issue on gingerbread on my phone, but on the TouchPad I just cannot get it to use anything but the default player.
I have tried default app manager and cleared any defaults of any type that were set, set the defaults the way I wanted, etc, but it is like the apps simply do not see that any video player but the default exists.
EDIT: I AM NOT ASKING ABOUT HD VIDEO SUPPORT AND I UNDERSTAND SOME VIDEO PLAYERS MAY NOT WORK BUT SOME SHOULD. I AM NOT ASKING ABOUT HD VIDEO SUPPORT!!
the issue *again*, in a nutshell: I cannot CHANGE the default video player. There is no entry in Settings->Apps to "clear defaults" on, and it never prompts me for which video player to use even after installing new ones. Thus, I cannot use any 3rd party video player since IT NEVER PROMPTS ME FOR WHICH ONE TO USE.
Any advice or help?

HD video doesn't work yet in any of the ICS versions on the Touchpad. You can always boot into webOS to watch videos until they get in working in CM9. Otherwise you'd have the use the ACMEUnistaller to remove CM9 and re-install CM7.

Umm, I believe you are missing the point.... I'm not asking about HD video...
as I understand it, there ARE media players that will play video in cm9... it just won't let me *select* any of them...
Not only that, but WebOS does NOT support DLNA or UPNP which is what I'm trying to use. There is ONE app in the HP web store for it, but it 1) doesn't support most video formats, and 2) won't even recognize my UPNP/DLNA server which works perfectly fine with my phone, and is visible to cm9 also.

Your phone is NOT running an alpha version of ICS. NOBODY is at the point of "fixing" specific issues with individual apps in CM9. Have you even tried using CM7?
BTW, the DLNA players you mention all use their own "media player" to render content. None of them "connect" to other video players or music players in Android. If you can't "play" your "stuff" using BubbleUPnP in CM9 it IS most likely because of the HD video problem. I just tried Bubble in CM7 and it works fine using "Local Renderer". Which is the ONLY renderer available.

Actually, no, at least some of them will use an external media player and simply start the stream.
Whatever, obviously no help here.
I use es file explorer and when I click the video it buffers in Mx video player I think. Anything less than 1500 kbps plays fine for me.

My problem is that at some point I accidentally set the built-in player to default. So I have to open mx-player manually and play files that way. This obviously does not work when you're using a UPNP app to pass a video stream to the player. Unfortunately, it's passing to the built-in player.
It looks like either ICS, or AOKP one has an "issue" with the fact that there's no place to change this default once set. I've gone through EVERY SINGLE APP listed in the application manager and cleared defaults, and it is still not prompting for a new default media player.
Looks like the only solution for this is a reset, which is a lot of overkill...
Try deleting the internal video player or freezing it with titanium backup and then it might ask you again which video player to use.

If you open /Settings/Applications/Running Services and all you see is the app itself and the Android UPnP service, and no video player, it is because, like I said to begin with, the app is doing its own rendering and NOT using any "default video player". You can try anything you like and it isn't going to work until you un-install ICS and install a GingerBread based version of Android. Bubble works fine in CM7 without using any external video player.

However, UPNPlay does NOT have an internal video player. Pretty sure Bubble doesn't, but I know for a *fact* UPNPlay doesn't. Again, if I open the files directly _they do play_. The issue is NOT that video files won't play - it is that the default video player cannot seem to be changed.

And I "know for a fact" that Bubble DOES have an "internal video player". And if UPNPlay doesn't have one, then the one it is using will show under /Settings/Applications/Running Services. If there is no video player running then the "FACT" is that you are wrong and it DOES have its own in Android. It may be a different thing in Windows, but that isn't relevant to this discussion. The simple reason that the "default video player" can't be changed is that there is no such animal. You can't change what doesn't exist.
edit: I just checked the settings for UPNPlay and it has settings for third party *Audio* players but NOT for third party video. I guess some people's "facts" are different from others.
