The OTA 2.2.1 update made things complicated for Droid users who want to root and download non market apps. After several days, countless hours and trial and error, this is my little write up on how I rooted a Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 Build # FRG83D.
z4root no longer works and neither does the ability to download non market apps with 2.2.1. This is the easiest way to do it although there are other longer processes to root your phone which may have not been used on a 2.2.1 Moto Droid. I did a factory reset before I started but that is optional, let's begin.
*** Disclaimer ***
Please make a Nandroid or backup before this just incase.
1. Go to Motorolla's site and downloaded the Motorola 4.8.0 Driver with MotoConnect here. This program automatically downloads the driver your computer needs. This is a MUST. Lots of websites’ and write-ups forget or are vague on this easy step and it makes for a headache. Once downloaded, click on “Update Drivers” and click start. (You can download the driver file and wait for your Hardware Manager to pop up and go that route or just take the easy way and do this)
2. Download the latest version of Superoneclick and follow its directions on how to install it, you can find it here.
3. Connect your phone with your PC via USB. Make sure that USB debugging is ON. I removed my SD card to be on the safe side but if you choose not to, make sure you do not mount the SD card.
4. Open the Superoneclick program after un-zipping it, in Administrator mode. Follow the directions, there is even a video on how to do it. After your phone is rooted, click on " Allow non market apps ". Superuser should now be installed on your phone in your app's list.
*** The newest version of Superoneclick install BusyBox along with Superuser. Open your app drawer and look for these two. If both are there, you are done! If not, continue to step #5. ***
5. Disconnect your phone from your computer and restart your phone. It's not needed but, it's best to start with a fresh restart.
6. Go into your market from your phone, download Busybox ( free app ) and run it. Once installed, make sure within the app it states that your phone is rooted and the latest version of Busybox is displayed.
7. Restart your phone, this step is a must.
Your phone now has root access. You can download non market apps as well. I use Titanium Backup to remove bloat and such but you can use your favorite file manager.
Why the OTA 2.2.1 made things disfunctional, I don't know but this is my little solution and hope it helps.
I am going to give this a nice healthy bump since I have seen a couple Root confusion threads. I will be more then happy to answer any questions.
THANKS
Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Working on a Droid 1 for the first time. This is just the info I needed! Thank you sir!
Not a problem! I actually find that a stock ROMed, rooted and cleaned up Droid 1 is just as quick as the ROMs available to download if not quicker.
Thanks!
Hi,
Wanted to say thanks! Your write up was concise, straightforward and easy to understand... The app worked just like it said it would and rooted my Droid (the original) 2.2.1 FRG83D like a charm!
The Tutorial was a god send as that clarified what to expect and how to react if something went "brown & lumpy".
Thanks and now off to make a backup before learning the other fun stuff!
Tried this, downloaded the driver PC sees the phone, check
DL and run superone click, Check
no busybox, download and install, says rooted, check
here's the problem, can't get into recovery can't do a nand before or after rooting. seems recovery can't see the sdcrad.
I tried to root my Droid 1 (2.2.1 FR83d) with super one click. Everything seemed to work. I got super user access, TI backup runs (mostly)
From Rom manager I installed Clockwork it said everything work but no recovery mode access (yellow triangle) After reading up here it was suggested to flash SPrecovery and then back to clockwork so I did that bot SP and clock work appeared to run fine but still no recovery mode.
Setcpu seems to be working superuser is working but I cannot make a backup of the phone (nand, ROM manager recovery both fail) TI can't uninstall factory apps, and dose not make a complete backup just apps and restores dose not do a complete restore.
It seems I have half a rooted phone. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just rooted my OG Droid. Thanks for the guide!
Edit: Just noticed that BusyBox didn't install with SuperOneClick, and that it is failing to install with the BusyBox installer app.
Edit: Okay, BusyBox installed. Backup created, ready for some ROMs!

The new version of superoneclick should install busy box if not get busybox from the market.
How did you get busy box to finally install? What solved the problem?

For some reason my SU settings didn't pop up, and that caused the install to fail. The 2nd time around, it asked me for permission and it worked.
K I need help please. I used the rs4 lite guide to root the wife's phone ,that was successful, installed rom manager and did the clock mod flash now I can't get recovery, none , I installed busy box and still nothing lol, help I was gonna put cyan 7 on
I figured it out lol, just had to search the forums a bit more , running cyanogen 7 and is a sweet rom . Sry for being a noob . Thanks to all who came up the Rome and cracks y'all rock
Great walk through. Some of you might need another driver (ADB) for XP. They won't let me post the link but it's at Alldroid.
Worked flawlessly on my new 2.2.1 Droid 1, thanks!
Thank you very much for the post, helped me a lot for my rooting Droid / Roi as it is Verizon but I have with Iusacell in Mexico
This thread should be pinned.
My computer says your superoneclick is infected with a virus. Bummer for all the peeps that downloaded it already.......
Hey All,
This is going to be somewhat on and off topic.
I have jumped into the world of Android with both feet in the last few weeks.
So far I have obtained:
A Color nook which I have rooted using autonooter 3.0.0 running stock OS and also run Honeycomb off my SD card (until the real version comes out)
A Moto Backflip which I have rooted using rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin and is now running Unofficial CyanogenMod v6.1.2 (Froyo 2.2.1)
And Now I just bought a Droid with a dead battery, 16GB SDcard and a bad micro USB port for $25! (figured at $25 for a 16GB card it was worth the risk) I was able to "jump start" the battery and got it to power on. Its currently running 2.2.1 with build number FRG83D and is not rooted. Looks like the digitizer has a dead swath right down the middle.
Anyway, I can fix both things for <$30, so at $55 I still think I got a deal. Not too mention the fun of repairing and hacking it!
So my question:
I plan to use it for a little while before spending $$$ and making the repairs. But w/o a USB connector it does not seem that I can root my version.
Do I have any other options? keep in mind the current lack of ability to push things with ADB.
Super fast and easy. thank you so much!

have you tried adb wireless from the marketplace? i got a nook color recently too and had a hell of a time with adb through usb, but adb wirless seems to work great.
I just purchased my nexus one today from a lady that had it brand new in box she never used it etc. when i got it i turned it on with my sim in and it worked great was even able to update to 2.3.4, i got home and decided hey id like to load some custom roms. however ive never done this, i also have a galaxy s 4g ive been trying to figure out how to load custom roms on for the past 2 weeks and im just over whelmed with all of the information in most of these posts. half of it i dont seem to understand, just wondering is anyone out there able to walk me through via IM on gtalk or yahoo messenger on rooting my nexus one and running a custom rom on it? Just looking for someone thats not busy and has some time to spare, ive messaged a few people but have not received any responses. but let me know Thanks!
ive installed pdanet, i tried loading passion frg33 and renaming it and putting on my sd card to downgrade since i guess cant root 2.3.4. but it says old version. that was one of the many guides ive read that told me to do that so im not sure just stuck scratching my head i guess.
Ok well when you say "old version" I'm going to guess that it says "main version is older" which means that you got the new main version so you'll need to use a different passimg file http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1105&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fnexus-one-general-discussion%2F12112-nexus-one-oracle.html&v=1&libid=1308893507029&out=http%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2F6bym3vg&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fsearch.php%3Fsearchid%3D243391&title=The%20Nexus%20One%20Oracle%20-%20Nexus%20One%2FNexus%20S%20Forum%20-%20Google%20Phone%20Forum&txt=http%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2F6bym3vg
Now I know you said IM of some sort but I'll just try and drop it in this thread if you don't get it then I'll help you on gtalk of something.
Now what you need to do is rename the file above "passimg.zip" now if your on windows this will be "passimg" because on windows the extension is hidden.
After you do that you will be able to root with superoneclick all you'll need to do is set up the drivers download and extract this file http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1105&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fnexus-one-development-hacking%2F10940-simple-sdk-setup-manual-root-guide-windows.html&v=1&libid=1308894048581&out=http%3A%2F%2Fdb.tt%2F10De9hz&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusoneforum.net%2Fforum%2Fnexus-one-development-hacking%2F&title=Simple%20SDK%20setup%20and%20manual%20root%20guide%20(Windows)%20-%20Nexus%20One%2FNexus%20S%20Forum%20-%20Google%20Phone%20Forum&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fdb.tt%2F10De9hz (credit for this goes to danger-rat) boot the phone into fastboot (hold trackball while powering up) and connect to the computer via usb, computer should ask for drivers select manual and point it to the "usd-drivers" folder from the file you just extracted.
Now all you have left to do is run superoneclick from the tools directory of the file you extracted.
thanks man imma try that right now ill let you know asap how it goes.
so it went to 2.2.1 i attempted to root using super one click but got no love. ran an older version that i used to root my galaxy s 4g and tried to do rageagainst the cage like i did with that one for my galaxy s 4g and it rooted it. do you think your able to message me on gtalk? my id is [email protected]
fastboot oem unlock
Flash new recovery.
Then flash superuser apk.
It's not that hard, and there are plenty of tutorials that show you how to do this, including the wiki.
Search. Read.
Read the "Root" section in Wiki. Look at my signature.
Ok well like he said in his first post he read some of the info and doesn't understand most of it, so I took the liberty of helping him he is now rooted and running cm7.0.3 with dt installed and everything.
Just throwing that in there so you guys know.
Good for you Dude! xD
hey guys this is my first post. I have known about this website for a long time. i am a huge fan. I am having some trouble with my droid 3. I have used the v7 one click root and it worked like an absolute charm. i loved it. i highly recommend it for new d3 users. Only problem is my DA sister was messing with my phone right when the new update went out for them. lets just say.. she updated it. i had absolutely no idea until i tried to access root permissions and it did not work. i had titanium backup running too so my apps are frozen but my phone is not rooted anymore? i cant access anything. i tried to re-root my phone but it says adb is not recognized as an internal or external command or something like that. I dont know if i have to reset my entire phone? or what. Ive tried everything and nothing is working. If this is not the proper forum to ask this question i apologize ahead for this is my first forum like i said. I have absolutely no idea what to do. i am very stuck. Anything can help guys thank you.
if you had so any apps frozen I'm surprised the update went through. Lol the one click root should work for you though. I guess if you've tried everything an sbf with the .890 file is guaranteed to solve your problems and you will be able to reroot just as you've done before. Just check if your drivers are still a-ok

i re-installed new drivers even tho i was pretty sure mine were all set. but instead of opening up the easy root v7 out of winrar directly i extracted it to the desktop then ran it then it worked? lol so i am very confused. but it works now thank you for your help.
I have looked around the forums and google searched this for the last hour. I've been trying to root it with SuperOneClick and Pete's Motorola Root Tools and have had no success. The build number is FRK76. My brother updated it and i can't root it anymore. Any help will be accepted.
I am having the same issue. Any rooting options out there for 2.2.3? Someone out there please help out.
Thanks...
Same problem here. It got updated to FRK76, cant find any support to root it.
I found that using Superoneclick v1.7 works when you use the rageagainstthecage method. This was the latest version I found that included this method; it has been removed in later versions.
Root 2.2.3 (FRK76)
I had the same problem:
Current version of SuperOneClick could not root my Droid (2.2.3 FRK76)
Downloaded SuperOneClick 1.7,
ran it (selecting rageinthecage option)
and it succeeded in rooting my phone.
Thank you!
- michael
PS: I got v 1.7 here

I can't vouch for that zip file but yes version 1.7 will get flagged by your virus scanner. I posted in the other thread where I got my version of 1.7 from and the link has a description of why it gets flagged by your virus scanner: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406287&page=2
Root Droid using 2.2.3 with Mac OS X
Can someone point me to step by step instructions on how to root my Droid 1 running 2.2.3 using my Mac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8? I've searched quite a bit so far and have not come across what I need. I have not rooted before, and I'd like some help. Everyone here seems to be the most helpful I've seen on most forums so I figured this would be the place to ask. All assistance is greatly appreciated.
I tried using mono and running SuperOneClick v 1.7 with the rageinthecage option and it failed, also failed using all other exploits in both the 2.3.3 version on SOC and the 1.7 version of SOC.
Each time I try I get "Automatic version checking failed, Is your OS 2.0 or higher?" with options of YES, NO, OR CANCEL. No matter what i choose, the process stops.
Is using mono the problem? I am willing to try anything manually or otherwise, I just need some guidance. Thanks in advance!
Nate
Never mind, I've got it taken care of
How did you get it taken care of?
I am officially a sap. I download all excited thinking "hey, maybe wireless will finally work on a wpa2 encrypted network." But of course we should not fix a serious usability issue. Instead lets take away root making it even harder to use the device.
Err.. I simply meant to say, "hey, thanks for the tip on getting superoneclick 1.7 to do the jpb!"
UniversalAndroot is what you looking for.
I was able to use the latest SuperOneClick w/ my Droid @ 2.2.3 and it worked the first time on Win7 64-bit. I don't remember my build number (it seems to have changed since installing CM7), but I got it in January of 2010.
so ive been at this all day reading and searching these forums with no luck.
i have a droid one, running 2.2.3 FRK76, bought the phone used. says it has kernel version 2.6.32.9-g68eeef5. no clue what this is.
have tried to root with superoneclick with rageagainstcage option clicked. also tried the one click some one had posted on this site in one of the forums. Sd card is unmounted. debugg mode is selected. and i cant get past first time it says waiting for device. what do i do? im usign windows xp
First, it's but joined up as mass storage it's it? Also run one chick as admin if you aren't

links for rooting
I am having the same problem. I have been at this for 2 days now trying to root my droid 2.2.3. I tried
psouza4 method
it didnt work. I got the error message:
ERROR: adb could not be granted root access via local.prop method
Try again from the start, but if the problem continues, check your version
of Gingerbread -- hopefully you don't have a version where this exploit
was fixed.
then I tried to download super one click and I couldnt find the link....
I need help... anyone??
THANKS!
I'm baffled as to what I did wrong during the initial root of zv7 software. I can't unroot, can't recover, can't root to zv8 or upgrade. I'm using MT's AIO root app and just can't seem to understand. I guess there's a reason I'm a noob. this is what i get:
unable to open log device "/dev/log/main" no such file or directory
And then from there it won't add new root files, remove trash etc.

You can't keep gingervolt as of right now, but I'm sure a vz8 gingervolt will be coming out. I would first make sure you take an image with cmw before you do anything with your phone.
I first rooted the the device like in the first thread about maintaining root from vz7 to vz8 thread. It worked after I got LGNPST working, but I still wanted CWM. When MT came out with the script, I gave that a try but had permission issues. If you have an image you can restore to pre gingervolt, I would try that, then use MT's tool to apply stock recovery. I had to run the tool twice before it would take and I didn't get anything puking at me and I got stock recovery. Make sure you still have root. I then prepare for update, update, then apply root and cmw.
If you don't have a pre gingervolt image, Follow the instructions to put the vz7 tot back on your phone found here. Then root only. After you have root, I would then prep for vz8, update, then root and install cmw.
If everything is successful, I would take a post install image with cmw.
Thanks a bunch. I will get to this tonight and let you know the results. I have confidence it will work. Since I'm a noob, it won't let me post an image, but I'll upload it to photobucket and hyperlink. Thanks again! PM me your paypal and I will throw some scratch your way.
I'm new to this also so it is some trial and error. Just keep working at it. No need to send me any money. If you want to make a donation, send it to MT, Spc.Hicks or one of the other developers who keep this phone going.
Here's where I'm at with the process.
Still rooted on zv7. Tried to do stock recovery (unroot with zv7 stock rom) but wouldn't recognize my battery or sim card. I am only able to run rooted zv7 with GV 2.0 in order to use all functions of phone. Unable to update OTA to zv8. The stock zv7 will not work, therefore had to flash GV2.0 with root. The problems I had before was sound not working, music player plays, but no sound, and when the phone was on and the screen would turn off automatically, it wouldn't turn back on. The buttons along the bottom would light up, but no screen. It was at this point that I had to return to rooted zv7 with GV2.0.
The Update Process
Hey I had a lot of trouble coming from MT's 2.0 V7 to V8 Root with Revovery. Let me see if I can help. This method worked for me. Follow it if you like.
1. First start from scratch using LGPST and V7 .TOT. Just follow the instuctions from the [FIX] Updated by accident? thread by hilong08.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211295
I did have trouble installing the .dll. Just run the CMD as an administrator to install it without errors.
2. Run the old All in one from MT to root your phone only.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348557
3. Once its rooted download terminal emulator from the market and do this
Type su and then enter you should see a "#". Next type echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop. It should create a file called local.prop in your /data directory.
you could manually do it with root explorer too.
4. Now wait for the Verizon OTA (over the air) update or manually search.
5. Now you should be on V8.
6. Run the AIO bat by MT to root and install CWM , option 2. I believe we manually did option 1 so theres no need to do it once on V8.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566729
7. You should be root with CWM. I thought I didnt install this right the first time after about 3 fresh installs over a period of 2 days. CWM is installed man, even if you dont see it, i had to use quick boot from the market to boot into revovery.
Another thing if your phone loses sound check your /data/local.prop and change it to local.prop.bak and reboot. I also had a problem and it was freaking me out.
good luck
Stop V8 notifications
If you want to keep your phone from trying to update while in V7, use root explorer to rename /system/lib/ libdme_main.so to libdme_main.bak; I renamed three days ago with no update notifications to date. http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1236896.html
I'm still not getting anywhere. I'm back to root with gv2.0 with no sound. I'm just afraid to do anything else. Can someone call me or do a remote session? I'm ****ing retarded.
No no no. Go to development section and flash the v8 tot. Easiest way to get to v8

I'm actually considering going back to ginger volt 2.0. I really don't notice any differences on v8 except that I have a bunch of bloatware. I lost all the things I loved about my phone, like the number percentage on the battery status. now I have a huge E911 cross hair icon I can't seem to get rid of.

I hear you. I'm holding off until MT gets a new and stable Gingervolt released for it. My phone works just fine on V7 w/GV2.0. Why fix something that isn't broken?
Ok I finally got my phone back to stable working condition with gingervolt and root on zv7. Can someone tell me step-by-step how to stop the zv8 update? Were going to have to dig deep on this one. I'm shallow on my terminology, and have no clue if I even have root explorer, or how to use it. I really wish there were college classes on how to understand this stuff. I know it's linux based, but you really have to be passionate about this stuff to understand. If you guys wanted to know about bikes, I could tell you how to build one from scratch! To each their own i suppose. Thanks in advance for everyone's help getting me this far. I really do appreciate all your hard work.

Noobzilla,
Here is how another user took care of the update. Take some time and look through the development section here as well. I know there are some ways to move to the update and maintain the root as well.

Lot of us are waiting for MT to release GV 2.1 with V8 update. I was in your boat and planning to go back to stock just to see how V8 updates looks like. After reading the forms a lot of us decide to wait for new release. I would honestly suggest to wait for few weeks, stock V8 has so much bloat that you may not like it. I would suggest to donate to MT and other developers because they really rock. Just my 2 cents.

Noob you need to get back all the way stock on zv7 so either use the zv7.tot file or flash the zv7 backup my has posted in the development section after you have flashed the zv7 backup your going to run the zv7 all in one and select unroot this will unroot and put stock recovery on your phone after you have stock recovery and no root your going to run Mrs new all in one to get you where you need to be I haven't done this yet so you may have to run the other all in one selecting the option root only then run the new all in one easiest way for help is getting on the irc channel you might have to wait a little bit for help but someone will show up. Also give thanks to mt for creating this all in one for you guys eliminating the need for you guys having to learn how to use adb but I encourage everyone to get the sdk and learn how to use adb as your next phone may not have options such as a all in one check out this thread in the thunderbolt forum on how to root unlock and install cwm recovery on it. It will really make you appreciate all the work my has put into making these all in ones the script doesn't know what to do until my has typed all this stuff already.
Here is the thunderbolt method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12159325 that's not exactly what's being done on the revolution but still a good read but imagine having to do all that to get root on your phone I encourage reading it as it will help you understand what's going on in a script that particular method was published by jcase who is an awesome exploit finder and this method includes getting temp root in order to flash an older hboot version allowing you to downgrade to a version that had already been unlocked and getting root there enabling you to get perma root and a unlocked bootloader and involves using a terminal and adb and will really get you comfortable with adb and appreciate all the keystrokes mt has saved you. *Also do not try that thunderbolt method on your revolution* I'm not positive what will happen but I am confident it will not be good.

Sounds like everyone is waiting for MT to push a new version of GV. I have decided to do the same. I used Root Explorer to change the file extension of the update file. I did this about a day after my last post on this thread and had no problems. Running GV and flashing Fusion as we speak on ZV7. Phone works great. Thanks for everyone's help!
