[Q] Some newbie's questions - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've got a new captivate something like a week ago.
I got it with preception 10.4 rom and speed mod kernel and android 2.2.1.
The phone works very fast and I'm satisfied with the speed but the battery is draining very fast.
for example, yesterday I charged the battery and went to a friend, I pictured some photos, filmed a short video (1 minute), played a little game and after 5 hours the battery was 70%, I went to sleep and after something like 9-10 hours when I woke up the battery was 27%! Without using the phone!!
Is it normal?
And for my other questions:
1. How can I know if I have the lagfix enabled?
2. Is it good to upgrade to the official version of AT&T 2.2? Some people told that this is faster.
3. If I will change the rom should I be worried of the sim free unlock (that it will lock again)?
4. What are the best rom and kernel that will be fast and will have battery saving?
Thanks!

I'm not too familiar with the Cognition ROM's. But I might take a look at WiFi, or you may have a app thats running in the background causing the drain. Do you have wifi or gps on all the time?
1. It was probably enabled by default. A really easy way is open File Explorer, go to your "Voodoo" folder, open it if there is a folder named "disable-lagfix", then your lagfix is not enabled. If you want to enable it, delete the "disable-lagfix" folder and reboot
2. I wouldn't waste my time with stock 2.2. Most all of the modded ROM's here are going to be better
3. I'm not familiar with that issue, never had it happen for myself
4. That is a hard question to answer, most of the Captivate devices are going to respond to a ROM/Kernel, a little bit differently. For example, my device LOVES Supernova JS5, where as your device might not run quite right on it. So my advice is to try it, if it works for you, use it. Read the threads, find a ROM that you think has really great support, so if you run into issues you can find help. Zelendel has posted in the Q&A section, threads for some of the more popular ROM's for the newer folks who get stuck

Voltage control App/RC6 and 1400 Kernel
I am currently running RC6 on my captivate with the 1300 kernel. I have no issues using and adjusting voltage control app with this set up. However, as soon as I try SGS kernel flasher and flash 1344 kernel or the 1400 kernel voltage control app begins to force close. I have removed and added back in with the same result. I am very happy with my set up, but would like to benchmark the other two. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you very much!
I enabled the lag fix, not seeing a big improvement.
I will try to find a new rom because I can't continue with this battery.. draining like water!
1. Another questions, does a rom comes with a kernel or should I need to flash kernel too?
2. What mode does the phone need to be when I connecting it to computer to flash a rom?
3. What are this JXX all about?
4.If I am flashin to stock rom, how will it know to flash to 2.2 or it doesn't matter because the new rom is 2.2?
5. Does flashing to stock rom unroot my phone?
6. Do I need to disable lagfix before flashing new rom? If so how do I do it? just copying the disable-lagfix file back to the Voodo folder?
lol a lot a questions, but I'm sure you'll forgive me

Ok, here we go.
1. All of the ROM's come with modems and kernels
2. I would be flashing back to stock 2.1 and Master Clear before flashing a new ROM. After that is done, to flash to a custom ROM, you will be in Recovery Mode
3. The J** is, for lack of a better term, the build number. The farther down the alphabet you go the newer the release. The newest at this time is JS5.
4. When you flash to stock you'll use Odin which has stock 2.1 JF6 built in. You can get it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4 If you're going to a custom ROM, I wouldnt mess with the new Stock 2.2
5. Yes
6. I would. All you need to do(for Voodoo lagfix) is, open a File Explorer, go to your Voodoo folder and create a folder named disable-lagfix then reboot the phone

There is no reason to flash back to stock and master clear. It used to be a bigger deal but now they are all compatable. The only thing you might want to do is clear the dalvik cache in the advanced cmw menu in the recovery mode. I havent done any of this for about a month and after flashing over 10 roms im still seeing no problems.

Thats probably true for you, but for the beginner it's the safest route to take. It is THE safest way to do it. The chances of things getting messed up are lessened

Thank you, you're great.
About the mode I meant USB debugging or something like this.
How do I do this master clear?
About odin and all of this, when I will flash my rom I will use the captivate toolbox (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418) so I think it will do it automatically. I want to do everything safe and I think this program is a great way to start.
Especially after I tried to backup my current rom using rom manager and it got me to recovery mode but the ok key button wasn't working, so I had to pull out the battery :S

I successfully installed serendipity rom with the help of kangi!
But I have a problem, when I want to enter CWM with rom manager I press "Reboot into Recovery" in the rom manager app and it reboots my phone and get me to the phone recovery (3e) and says that something was faild and I can't use the ok button because it doesn't working.
I have to pull out my battery and then turn the phone on again and then it gets me to CWM.
What is the problem? there's another way?
I don't think that pulling the battery like this is very healthy for my phone.

The captivate toolbox is an awsome program.
When you use it to flash a rom, it will push clockwork recovery onto the phone for you. just follow the instructions and you will be fine.
A few notes on the toolbox and Odin3,
you must have the samsung drivers installed on your computer, they take forever to install on my computer.
generally speaking, you will not need to use the 3button unless you flash someting like darky's extreme, and his instructions are very clear.
turn on debugging mode in settings/applications/development.
plug in the phone
click "flash to stock," use the one click and follow in the instructions.
let the phone fully reboot and go into sync mode, a minute later, the blue odin box will turn green and say "PASS."
Unplug the phone, turn debugging mode on again
plug in the phone, and when odin sees the phone (window will turn yellow) hit "master clear."
let the phone fully reboot again into sync mode
turn debugging mode on again
click root phone and follow the directions
If you want to open odin3, just click flash to stock with your phone unplugged and click which ever odin3 you want and it will open. This is very usefull if you want to use odin3 without the tool box.
After you flash the ROM, reboot in recovery and if you dig arround in the menus, you should see stuff about lagfix options and lagfix tweaks. make sure lagfix is enabled, if your not sure enable it and reboot into recovery. many roms install with lagfix not enabled, so yuo should always do this. once it changes the file system and reboots into recovery, go into tweaks and enable everything that has an (R) next to it. reboot and enjoy

lol pulling the battery isnt the greatest thing to do.. but it shouldn't hurt it as long as its at one of those type of screens. If you were to pull it say.. doing a restore - that would be a fatal no-no.
Um.. if you have ROM MANAGER on your phone already it should have an "update.zip" that has all of the recovery advanced options in it.
Especially with Serendipity if you want to get into Recovery just hit the power button and click on Recovery - it will put you into the CWM recovery mode.

With a custom ROM installed, most of the newer ones have a Extended power menu, press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, let it go and it'll give the option for Recovery. Personally, after stock JF6, I dont have any need for ROM Manager anymore
Try to enter Recovery that way first, don't use ROM Manager, if that doesn't work, I would put the "update.zip" back on your phone, and try to re-install it again. Something may have hosed on you

Got it. Thanks everybody

ISSUE: Voltage Control app FC's on start in Paragon RC6 1400 kernel.
This is related to having previously installed the Paragon 1300 kernel (and the VC app was working there). I forgot to delete the OC/UV settings before flashing the 1400 kernel
FIXED: These steps may not ALL be necessary, but this is what I did, and it fixed the issue for me:
Uninstall Voltage Control app with TiBu
Delete /etc/init.d/S_volt_scheduler and /etc/init.d/S90scheduler (use Root Explorer or adb shell su)
Boot to CWM recovery
Delete cache and Dalvik cache
Re-flash Paragon RC6 1400 kernel ONLY (not the ROM) - paragon6-1400-100hz-0215-2245-cwm.zip
BTW I'm running Serendipity 6.2 ROM, and it's a beeautiful ride with this kernel

[Q] need help

I rooted my phone like couple of month ago, then I updated the new AT&T partial update then today, I ran the froyo 2.2 update through the rom manager everything went ok but when i tried to use the rom manager again to restore my app. it restored then when it rebooted it came to the AT&T screen then froze, i tried to put it in recover mood but i could not, I had to take the battery off to force to power off, then when i put the battery back and power on it only come to the AT&T screen and froze. I do not know what to do?
1. Download Odin One Click to Stock JF6.
2. Launch Odin
3. Remove the battery from your phone
4. Plug the phone into the computer
5. Hold down both volume buttons
6. Put the battery in the phone while still holding both volume buttons
After step 6 the phone should enter download mode and Odin should have a box that says: COM:# and then press start. It should flash you back to JF6.
I Could put it in the download mode but everytime i use the odin it fails

Go to development, select a rom, download the .zip file, but do NOT rename it to update.zip and just copy it over to the root of the sd card.
I would recommend reading!
1. Root
2. Download Rom Manager
3. Flash CWM
4. Reboot into recovery
a. Install packages
b. It'll bring you back to 2e recovery
c. Install packages again and it'll load CWM Recovery
5. Install .zip from sd card and select the rom.zip
Make sure you have the three button recovery or can use a jig before flashing Froyo, I recommend Perception ROMS, they have most bugs fixed and DG gives great support, also he made a nice kernel. The ROM is I9000 Froyo based and it works great. I've tried out several other ROMS but some have too many bugs, for me, or are too vanilla. I ran Tayutama's ROM for quite a while. I am waiting for CM6.1 to be less buggie, I'd love to try it but I need a working phone.

there are much better options than the leaked FroYo. custom roms have been streamlined, and crafted together to give us a better FroYo experience. i would recommend just about ANY custom rom over the leaked 2.2
do you recommend a specific one?
i did that and it never came back could not get to recovery, ithink that if you do get a second chance, be sure that you are in usb debugging mode first

Phoenix 4.1 questions

First of all, nice work. Looking forward to 4.5. This was my first custom ROM install, so I have a few questions.
1. I didn't notice the auto-lagfix being applied when I installed. I am getting a quadrant score of about 1060 and it seems most people are getting much higher. Not that I am experiencing a lag, but just curious.
2. I am guessing I should start over when 4.5 comes out. I didn't try anything different than what came with it.
3. I love the orange theme, but would prefer the stock phone dialer buttons. How would I change that?
4. I did notice some issues with internet connectivity using the modem and not wifi. I shouldn't need to enable roaming, right? GSM only should work too? Why would WCDMA even be an option? Is GPRS an option or is it 3G only?
Thanks.

I think Adam usually provides a statement whether or not you can flash 4.5 over 4.1 or whether one requires a wipe, flash to stock, and fresh install. I'm hoping 4.5 can be flashed over 4.1. Unfortunately, I don't have any answers for your other questions.

I was wondering about that myself. I couldn't find the voodoo folder that is supposed to exist to disable/enable lagfix. Any body have any ideas if the lag fix is actually installed with 4.1 or if there is other work required?
It seems to be just fine without it. That makes upgrades alot easier.I hear the folks who have official 2.2.1 overseas don't use a lagfix anymore.
Phoenix is based on 2.2.1 jpy.
As for the lagfix questions, with the included kernel you need to boot into recovery and choose advanced ulk, then enable/disable there.
thanks. ill try that later. looks like a new version of the market and google music might be announced tomorrow.

Went through these steps and it appears to be working just fine. Thanks. So if I need to disable lag fix, I have to go back into recovery and not create the disable-lagfix folder like on the www.phoenix-hq.com FAQs?
Just tried it too. works like a charm and boosted quadrant up to 1300. Yeah I imagine that you(we) have to remember to disable it to flash another ROM.
So flashing the browser fix just involves copying the zip to the sd, renaming it update.zip, and use recovery to apply the update?
You don't need to rename the browser fix zip, or any for that matter. Just reboot into recovery and flash the fix by selecting it just as you do for a rom.

It looks like Adam and Xtreem haven't updated the website's FAQ section in a while. The first versions of Phoenix-Rising used DG's Firebird kernel, which used voodoo lagfix. Creating a file/folder named "disable-lagifx" to disable your lagfix only applies to voodoo lagfix. The lagfix on hardcore's kernel (which is the stock kernel used on both of Adam's roms) uses the ultimate lagfix configuration, which is controlled entirely through the recovery menu. Voodoo and ULF are similar to one another, but the user configuration processes are different.
If you need to reflash something, disable the lagfix first by booting into recovery, and follow the same steps you used to enable the lagfix and just select disable instead. However it is best to flash back to stock first before flashing a new rom, so yea, I would recommend starting over when you're ready to install 4.5
Changing the dialer is not all that complicated. Head over to the Phoenix/Firefly themes thread, you can find a bunch of different flashable dialers over there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896339 Zelendel just finished a few new ones that have the stock button configurations in place. You'll have to look for that post, its somewhere near the last 1/3 of the thread.
quick question ( I would search but its broke, and i cant post in the phoenix thread until i have 10 posts)
Presuming its cool to flash this over 4.1, my brother did it with no problems, i just need to know if i should check backup rom or clear and wipe data in rom manager when i flash from sd card
New to the android stuff, but the first rom i tried to flash it locked up while installing it, he then told me just to flash straight from rom manager, worked great, so im going to try that
Thanks, i asked him but hes sleeping lol
I have the pheonix 4.1 rom. I noticed that using the power button it allows you to choose download mode. If I open odin one click and go into download mode this way will I be able to flash back stock or will I get stuck in file analyzing? I'm a little afraid to try because I don't know if I can leave download mode w/o bricking it. It's a miracle that I got it unbricked when I flashed the first time.

Yes, push and hold the power button gives you the extended power menu. Flight mode, Power off, Reboot, Recovery and Download. I've written some detailed instructions on how to flash back to stock JF6 and Master clear. Which I recommend doing when changing ROM's
Flash to Stock JF6:
1. Download Odin One Click from: http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4
2. Download your Windows Drivers from:
Windows 64bit: http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
Windows 32bit: http://www.mediafire.com/?0b45zo7o75rc5d5
3. Make sure your USB cable is connected directly to the back of your computer, not a USB hub or to a front connection and all of your drivers have been properly installed
4. Do not connect your USB cable yet.
5. On your phone, go to ; Settings/Applications/Development/and check “USB Debugging”
6. Turn your phone off
7. Remove your SIM card and Micro SD if you have one
8. Open Odin One Click
9. On your phone, press and hold the Volume up and the Volume down buttons. Do not touch the power button. If you have a ROM that supports a extended power menu, just press and hold the power button until the extended power menu comes up
10. While holding them, or after you select DOWNLOAD mode, insert your USB cable, wait for a couple of seconds and a yellow triangle with the Android figure will show up
11. You’ll see in Odin, that your phone has been discovered
12. Press “Start”
13. ***VERY IMPORTANT*** Do Not mess with your phone at all. If you lose your USB connection, you could brick your device, and will possibly have to make a jig
14. When it is done, your phone will reboot and Odin will display “Removed”
15. Unplug your USB cable from your phone
16. If you are proceeding to Master clear, you must close Odin BEFORE Master Clear
Master Clear:
1. Ensure you have backed up all of your information onto your Micro SD or your desktop BEFORE doing this. IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR INTERNAL SD!!
2. Make sure to remove your SIM and Micro SD if you have one
3. With your USB cable disconnected from your phone, open Odin One Click
4. On your phone, go to ; Settings/Applications/Development/and check “USB Debugging”
5. Connect your USB cable to your phone
6. You’ll see in Odin, that your phone has been discovered
7. Click “Master Clear”
8. When the Master Clear has completed, your phone will reboot
9. The phone is now as it was when it came from the factory

do not rename the file to update.zip, that name is used by recovery. just use the name as it is.
Thanks, I thought I could use the power button. Thanks again for the help.

***paragon rc5.1 stuck in desperate need of help!

This was supposed to be a pm to espyel developer of paragon rom. Sorry if I misspelled name.
I can't seem to pm or post on developer section cause im new here and threes a 10 post rule. I have searched for the last month and im just stuck. I need help! I have only my captivate I internet with a barely usable weak signal so its been very frustrating. I have learned a lot from this great forum but I can't get my problem fixed still.
Here is my copy of the pm which never goes thru for some weird reason. I just need some guidance as I have probably not done this right all the way thru.
First of all I want to thank you for all your hard work on this rom. I love it! I am in need of some help and I have been researching for the past 3 weeks with no answers. Im pretty new to all this stuff but anyways let me tell you my status as of now. I rooted my phone and was able to install the 5.1 paragon rom which I like a lot. I lost some apps due to tb not able to restore my quickoffice and other important apps. My problem is I can't seem to flash back to anything other than the paragon 5.1 install date. I have the rom manager flashed to recover other dates like when the phone was still stock version but nothing else works. It always fails! I tried installing the update rc6 and something is very wrong. After installed and rebooted phone stays on for nearly 5 minutes and reboots randomly also I try restoring apps and it doesn't work. Seems very laggy and I know from all the great reviews on the rc6 that its just me having this issue. Please help!!! What can I do from here to update my 5.1? My desktop just got fixed and I have no I internet yet other than my captivate which has real weak signals at my new house. I don't use the odin program you mention because of the desktop being down for over a month. Im limited to internet providers at the new house and I need to get it going soon. My captivate has been my internet portal for the last month and it sucks compared to my desktop not to mention poor signals here. I would like to tether my captivate to my desktop as well but have no clue on how to get it to work. I don't flash back to stock like you mention in your steps but I do delete data and cache and all. Like I said I love the work that you do and would love to donate soon. What can I do to enjoy the updates and full capabilities of this rom? Please help! Thanks in advance!
I would power phone off, hold volume up and down and power. When at&t comes up let go
Wipe cache partition
Go back
Advanced clockwork
Wipe davlik cache
Go back
Install zip from sd
Choose zip
Rc6
Flash
When done go back
Wipe both cache again
Factory reset
boot
See if that fixes it. Did you have oc settings saved at boot?
Odin would be nice though

I recommend using odin to flash back to stock and also do a master clear. After this you need to re-root, install rom manager, flash clockwork, reboot to recovery, and install rc6 from scratch. This method is recommended to avoid common issues. Good choice with paragon. Killer rom.

^^^ Thanks for the replies guys.
Good news is I got my desktop internet up temporarily using a wireless card and got a weak open signal.
Bad news is I am still lost! What Odin do I need and where can I download it from?
I tried searching and only found the odin3 but I'm hesitant to proceed with anything without getting some more info. What version do I need for my windows computer? 32 or 64 bit?
I have the SDK Manager on my desktop as well but still have no clue what to do with it or how to use it. I'm still looking into that.
Also, how can I get my phone to tether my desktop and get internet signal?
Is RC6 a full rom or just an update?
If I flash back to stock and reinstall RC6 would I need RC5.1 first then the RC6 update?

start>>run...type msinfo32.exe and enter...a window will come..click system summary..see system type on right hand side....x86 means 32 bits and x64 means 64 bits....So download Odin3 one click version for whatever version u have...its pretty simple...just download and start Odin...then put ur phone is download mode and plug the USB in the phone..if everything is right, u will see COM in Odin in yellow color...just click start and wait till it reboots
Also check the Odin for your phone...there is one for JH7 and one for Jh6....

you cant tether in stock 2.1(which u will get after using ODIn), but if u root ur phone use wireless tether 2.0.7 app
if u r still on paragon then go to settings>>wireless and network>> USB tethering...or wireless tethering...samsung has inbuilt settings for that in 2.2
I can walk u through odin steps pm me if u like I can also send you the correct odin to use

if you already have paragon rc 6 just simply do factory reset back-up your apps with the included titanium back-up, wipe dalvik cache and wipe battery stats from cwm recovery menu then reboot your phone. I doubt if you have tweak the over clocking/ voltage apps and not resetting it back to factory default when updating to rc 6 this may cause some issues. if you can open your oc/voltage control app in the menu simply remove boot setting, reset all the voltage slider to 0 and limit overclocking to 1000 mhz then apply, after that do tibu, factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats then reboot.

You know I did mean to mention this!!!
I did adjust my voltage and saved them. I remember running a quad test result of 1454. I never did remove the boot though! Maybe that's all that it was not able to flash to stock and rc6 not functioning right!!!
Thanks I'll give this a try.
So I used odin3 to flash back to stock 2.1 eclair.
Now I can't root my phone anymore!
Usb drivers are not picking up the device and I can't use desktop to transfer root files. I tried downloading some root zips to my phone but it doesn't except the downloads. I can't flash using clockwork because I am not rooted now.
I can't get adb to work even though I follow each step by step of the sdk download.
I'm in a worst situation now than before. Any help would be appreciated!!!

paragon rc 6 is already pre rooted you don't need to root your phone when installing paragon rc 6 just download the full room and the update zip and paste/copy it into your internal sd card. try installing samsung kies mini in your computer it will also install the corresponding driver. once your computer running odin recognizes your phone do a master clear. to do this just enable debugging mode but don't turn off your phone your phone will then reboot itself after the process. install the update zip first with cwm you have to do it twice. first the 3 button combo recovery it is a blue one the default in eclair then install update zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=490798&d=1295155828 once you have install it it will be back again to recovery mode and now a green color now install again the full rom of paragon rc6 http://xda.deanhatescoffee.com/roms/paragon-rc6-full.zip then wait for the phone to reboot.
I just wanted to give a BIG thanks to oxlong27.
You saved me big time from bricking my phone and loosing all data or worst.
They need a counter next to the thanks button! Haha!
I appreciate you going out the way and guiding me step by step over the phone, email, and text. I love my phone more than ever now!!! Everything works great and I'm lovin' the di11ligaf rom. Thanks a bunch bro!!! I didn't think this forum had members like you but I was wrong. Thanks to everybody else who replied with suggestions too!

[Q] Pretty sure I bricked.

So the story goes I installed Assonance on my Captivate from Official 2.2. Started having problems with the phone being stuck in Landscape mode. This problem followed when I installed Firefly. So I decided to try to go back to JF6 and clear everything. Couldn't get into download mode so downloaded a CMW flashable zip of JH7 and after installing the phone just sits at the AT&T World Phone screen. Can't get into Download mode with volume down + power or volume up down + usb. Need advice to try to get phone fixed/replaced, i'm stuck using a BlackBerry Bold. Any help please?
Google usb jig
CM7
Figured
Yeah that's what I figured. The only thing I'm curious about is the landscape mode issue following me around on different ROMS. After I hopefully unbrick the phone do you think it would be worth taking it to ATT?
Go to radioshack, 99 cents, use the video below for reference. You need 3 100k OHM resistors, and they run .99 cents for 5 of them. Use that to kick it into Download Mode and reflash. As for returning it to AT&T, if the orientation problem continues, I would if this doesn't fix anything.

What Kernel did you flash before everything went haywire? This is a classic sign of an i9000 kernel being flashed to a Captivate.
Forget download mode for the moment, can you get back into recovery?
It's true. But, theres no reason the kernel wouldn't flash over during CWM. Not to mention, if that were the case it would also almost certainly display other i9000 kernel issues, like external SD mounting and headphone logic. I think something else is the culprit here.

Sounds like lagfix present in Firefly was not disabled before flashing to stock, hence an ext4/jfs file conflict. OP, please let me know if you can reboot to recovery.

hmmmn I agree. too many bricked phones not disabling lagfix and clock default values in their kernel when flashing back to stock. seems many forgot that procedure. every dev always states here to disable lagfix when flashing new rom and set back default clock values in current kernel. the very first step neglected PITA to troubleshoot.
Before you go and buy anything, did you try this method (sorry, if you said you did)? It always works for me, especially at the "Phone--!--Computer" screen.

1. Remove the battery, external SD card and SIM card.
2. Wait 10 seconds.

If he was using odin one click it repartitions automatically. If full version as long as repartition is clicked odin gets rid of the lag fix.
My point is that as long as repartition is enabled the lag fix is not his issue

I've seen this many many times, and it is usually a result of a non-disabled lagfix or OC kernel. I've been down this road with a few people. He may be trying to use one-click now, but without being able to get into DL mode he's stuck. I'm trying to help him get into DL mode, as are other posters. Let's just focus on getting him to DL mode.

Flashing problems.....is this the right place to ask?

So I put Andromeda on my phone a few weeks ago. It went fine, no problems, liked it. So I went to put it on my wife's phone. I was able to get it rooted. Into download mode, and Odin on it. But I couldn't get it into recovery. Vol up/dn/pwr just booted the phone normally. Vol up/dn does work to change the volume settings normally so it's not a bad button. So I thought, I had mine on stock 2.2 when I did everything. So I hooked hers up to Kies and put 2.2 on it. Rooted it. Now I cant' get the phone into download or recovery mode. Vol up/dn, plug in usb not working, it just goes into battery charge mode. We got our phones the same time so they're both same hardware rev. Any ideas?
TIA,
Scott
This should probably go in the q&a section. But did you try the three button fix. Search the forums for it.

I donot know whats causing the problem (dont have the knowledge) but i can suggest buying a usb jig (costs only 8$ including shipping) which is pretty cheap and useful considering if you change roms frequently.
U just plug in the usb and the phone goes into download mode and you good to go.
If u wana buy just google mobile tech videos and buy it from their website (the guy john selling it is a rom reviwer on xda so its a safe site to buy) or on ebay. hope this helps

so its back to stock 2.2 ?
try using rom manager to boot into recovery.
note with 2.2 stock it has 3e recovery. to install cwm you must root and replace with 3e hacked recovery
use rom manager to boot into recovery. from cwm you can tell the phone to reboot into download.
or if you still have a custom rom, you use the advanced power menu (power button menu) to select download or recovery. no button tricks needed.

3e recovery can be a bit of a pain, it is easier to Odin one click to 2.1 with the 3 button fix and go on with that.
The other solution would be to go with Team Komin's Ursa Minor kernel. There's a video posted on the forum (and youtube) by AdamOutler (I think that's his name) on how to do it - very clear and easy to follow.
@ Trusselo, I don't mean to go against your suggestion. I went through the 3e recovery myself and it can be a pain for a newbie so I'm giving him/them a second opinion/suggestion
the 3e instructions are written like crap. i asked the OP to change it but no.,...
its actually super easy if you have root explorer. (google *cough cough*)
use root explorer to mount RW then drop the file over the old one.

Yup, they're. I had to go through the replies to find the actual good way to do it and even then it wasn't so clear.
Once you know how root explorer works, then go ahead and use the 3e recovery but I wouldn't suggest that to some1 new to all of this I mean, you don't wanna replace the wrong file either (or even worst, delete system files).
Either way, It's up to you OP - both solution works great. I hope we helped
EDIT: lolol - I guess w/o dl mode, my way doesn't work so well You can try one of the 3 ways to get in dl mode, the one that works best for me is:
1. Turn off phone, remove battery, sim card
2. hold down both volume button
3. plug the usb in (while holding both volume still)
4. A nice triangle with a Android holding a shovel should show up
If that doesn't work. My apologize and go ahead with the 3e recovery that Trusselo suggested. You can pm me for clear instruction (and probably Trusselo as well)
Thanks all for suggestions....
so its back to stock 2.2 ?
Yes. And I believe I got it rooted with Superoneclick because it has superuser on it.
it is easier to Odin one click to 2.1 with the 3 button fix and go on with that
Exactly what I'm trying to do. But can't get into download mode or 3-button recovery mode. Neither are working. I didn't try the abd server method. Looked a bit scary, but may try it this eve.
use root explorer to mount RW then drop the file over the old one
Forgive me. Root explorer from market, right? 'mount RW' ? Drop what file over what old file?
use rom manager to boot into recovery. from cwm you can tell the phone to reboot into download.
So mount the SD and copy cwm to it and rename to update.zip. Get Rom manager from market and that will get me to cwm to get to download mode to use Odin to go back to 2.1. Then root again and install rom manager again to get into recovery to load the Andromeda? Is that close?
odin one click isnt 3 button fix
3 button fix is a flash you use with the NON one click odin
root explorer is from the market... (can also be *found* on google [for testing purposes])
3e recovery fix is a file you must replace. xda search it!
rom manager will download and copy the update.zip for you! so you dont need to do it frist. its the first button in the app! Rom manager also has a button. "boot into recovery" use it to boot into recovery...
so flash to 2.1 with 3button fix (regular odin) 2.1 no 3e recovery forget that.
root
install rom manager to get cwm
cwm flash your new rom
delete rom manager.
sounds like you need to do more searching and reading...

Little question here, why would you delete ROM manager after?
@ OP - Please read some more before trying what has been suggested here. Trusselo gave you a good rundown which isn't too hard to do (there are also vid on it). A little reading could save your android, that coming from a guy that is usually hasty to act (notice how I bricked my 1st cappy )
most custom roms have CWM built into the kernel. rom manager and the update.zip with cwm are no longer needed with one of the cwm kernels.
and custom roms usually have the advanced power menu. boot to recovery/download easy peisy
rom manager only confuses people if you have both. took me a couple weeks to learn that..
bricked my first one too, kinda, (coulda fixed it) but couldn't wait and had it only days, easy exchange with in-store dummies.. lol
So I looked at Rom Manager on my phone.
Since the wife's on stock 2.2 and rooted. Seems that I can just d/l Rom Manager on her's. Copy the new rom to the SD. And use Rom Manager to flash it.
Can it be that simple?
And yes, I've been doing alot of reading. But, some of you guys talk a different language.....
Thanks again.

No, it's not that simple, on 2.2 with the 3e recovery you will get a signing error when trying to flash and it won't work. Follow the suggestions and just use odin with the 3 button fix to get to 2.1
To get into download did you try removing battery from captivate, start Odin, plug USB cable to PC and captivate, hold both volume keys, and reinstall battery? On Stock that's the only way I can get into download. There is a thread on here with more detail but that's how I do it.

Yep, tried that one.
Spent a couple hours on this last night. I isntalled Rom Manager. That will get the phone into recovery. But, since it's 3e, doesn't do me any good. Signature errors. No matter what I do, can't get the phone into download mode. Last night I even tried with adb. The phone just reboots normally with the adb reboot download command.
I know your gonna say there is the 3e fix, keep reading. I found it. But, really didn't understand it. And I don't want to brick the phone. I think the wife is going to be staying on stock 2.2 at this point. I don't know what else to do.
Thanks to all.

Try and make or buy a jig?
Buiding a JIG is quite simple and cheap, you should try it.
Also, you can pm me for 3e recovery. I'll give you a nice rundown - It's quite easy, just not well explained on the thread
