Ok. I have a fresh Samsung Captivate (build 1008) that I just flashed to stock with ODIN.
I want to mess it up a little bit. I want it to do this. I want it to do that. "ohhh ahhhh"
You, people out there, give me some recommendations for cool/good/fast/best ROMs.
Give me good ones, I'm tired of seeing the same ROM with a different skin and interface over and over. I want something different, unique, a nice selection of apps (google talk would be nice )
Have a look in the dev section for your phone, not sure what is available for that model

Have you tried dragon 2.2.1? I did and it was a nice surprise to see how different the layout was.
thanks, i'll give it a look. uh..actually, i think i saw that one on the forums, but it didn't say what phone it was for. I just saw a link and it just kept going on and on about how great it was but didnt say what phone (like captivate, vibrant..idk if roms are universal)
If you know what you are doing cm7 is one of a kind

what do you mean by "if i know what im doing"? is it hard to set up?
The flash process is more involved

Fusion 1.3 best rom

Any ROMS that Adam makes are awesome cause they're stupid fast and snappy including Firefly which he previously worked on. Right now I'm using Ryude's Precision 3.5 with UC/UV and getting awesome battery life (about 28-30 hours single charge) as a moderate to heavy user without sacrificing speed and stability. If it wasn't for me tweaking out a few things and soft bricking my phone previously running SuperNova 2.3, I think I would have stuck with it for a LONG time but meh, trying new ROMs never hurts.

Hey guys.
Well, I used to own an HTC Titan, and I would just spend days and days flashing and cooking ROMs like no one's business, but due to cost issues and general irritation with that phone, I switched to a flip phone for a while. Now, I'm back, on Sprint with a CDMA Hero and an unlimited data plan and I want to really see what this thing can do.
Yes, I have the Sprint 2.1 update and I've rooted it successfully. However, for some reason, everything felt a bit sluggish so I factory restored. (Don't know how to explain this, but kinda regretting it when I see all these custom ROMs floating around). Now, I want to get back into ROM flashing.
I wanted to get your guys' opinion on what ROM to use. I do have just one condition though, so hear me out before you tell me which one you love .
Simply put, I love HTC Sense. I've used my friend's Samsung Moment and I could not stand the UI. Sense, to me, has a sort of refinement I've grown to love. (just the way I am, I guess. So yeah, by extension, I don't want or need JiT. I've seen the differences in linpack tests and I'm not impressed enough to ditch Sense for it. Also, does Sense have to be cooked into a ROM by default or can I flash it in as an addon?
So what are your picks? I'd love to have something fast.
Damn another one of these. Go with fresh 2.od with the two updates. or with actually it depends what you like most of the overclocked roms are good but they have one setback when you push menu or the power button to get them to turn on there is a delay. but other than that there good and fast. I like zenexp slide port because it has this thing called mymodes where you can change your themes on the spot. It's hard to describe but it's good

@OP - Fresh 2.1.2. If you want friendstream JsChiSurf has a mod to fresh that makes it work. I am running it now but am having issues with gmail not giving me notifications. Which is a HUGE deal.
Ill throw my rom in there. It has sense and is based off of fresh 2.1.2 but ovetclocked and fully themed. Not for everyone but its there.

Try fresh2.3.3. I've been using it for a week, and it's pretty cool.

Just wanted to say that I used to LOVE Htc Sense as well... I've reverted to AOSP based roms such as PureHero or Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 - reasoning why is that I feel that Sense really bogs down the phone and I feel like my Htc Hero responses a whole lot better and smoother as well.
Specifically for the Samsung Captivate, why did you choose the ROM you have currently flashed on your phone and why? If you know about more than one ROM, would you mind telling me what you liked and disliked about each? It would be very helpful to me.
Please post this on the right section...we want to keep development for actual development...
I'm using Bacon and Axura with Red Soul theme. I love both rom because they are fast!
You can find more information in the ROM thread itself.

I do apologize. Didn't realize I posted here and meant to do so in the Q and A.
Could we get a mod to move it, please?
I asked the same thing...in development.....got a tongue lashing for being in the wrong thread and was directed here....wish you all would make up your mind!!!
I was a flashing fool. Did my fair share of trials and tests.
I ran through the Cognition roms. Loved each one as they got better and better. Vodoo lagfix is pretty easy if you understand how and when to disable. Pretty straight forward and noob friendly.
Perception is fast, shiny and new. Based on the I9000, the roms seem to need a bunch of tweaks and changes to get it to run decently. I was never happy with the performance I got from these and well I never really used it to it's full potential either.
So for now I'm back on JH7. I mostly use the phone just as that, a phone. No real advantage in using a custom rom for that.
It still depends on what you are looking for
Similar to earlier post I used the cog roms for a while. Easy to install and stable.
Currently on perception, much faster then stock our cognition. It has a ton of options for tweaks, but is a little more dangerous because it is less idiot proof. I am on the build 3 release and to be honest I will not be changing my rom for singer time.

Currently running auxura. It is a fantastic rom.... but you need to have a little knowledge on how to flash and use cement.
Its a very complete rom with an awesome theme and it is quick once you set it up correctly.
But. I do live Cognition .... just waiting for another release before. I flash back to it again lol.

I'm using and loving di11igaf's ROM. I used many variations of Cognition and I really appreciate it for bringing me into the world of custom ROMs, but the last version (2.3B6) seemed slow in comparison to AXURA and di11igaf's ROM. I really like the theme and speed of di11igaf's ROM.
Thanks for all the replies! I keep learning more and more every time I check this board out. I'm an ex iOS user and decided to move to Android and everything is tons different, very open, in fact. I think I'll continue to do more research on all the different ROMs and builds and make a little database for myself based on my research and decide from there. Then again, I'm sure the only way to know what I want is to flash each one.
I have yet to see any rom to match the speed of a i9000 based Rom. I have tried almost all of them and always come back to i9000 ROMs as they have the features I want and the best speed. Of course we all have different priorities.
well im tryin to find the faster rom out there im really tired of my slow captivate and new to "rooting" and "flashing" and is there a way i can have more than one rom on my phone and i can switch off between them if i dont like it?

axura was a great rom and the first I flashed but the battery consumption was attrocious. It was an awesome performer, the best out of what I tried
But at this time I have no car charger, the power is still only trickling
I dont have my screen in torch mode.
Its a big problem because you can actuall see the power go down, I was losing 1 percent about every 2-3 minutes, no lie! I was watching it all as it happened
It performed great and its a great rom just not for me, because right now I dont own a car charger not that i dont have the money to get it...I just havent
Whys everyone "OMG! I CANT WAIT FOR GB" or "CANT WAIT TO GET YOUR GB ROM" etc?
The OFFICIAL i9000 gb update has been pulled because its so full of issues still? Do people really think its a good idea?!
I loaded a few to try em out. They were all garbage.
actually if your flashaholic it really matters it's their choice.. for the positive note it gives feedback to the dev to work for improvements and the end result is a much polished rom. somehow when it will be stable you will be using it. give thanks to all the users who act as a ginuia pig for that cause....
I am thankful for the GB drop and all the devs that work on it. However, I have flashed probably a thousand things in the last year. Including spl and radios. The gingerbread rom bricked my phone when going back to stock and now I am using the backup G1 hoping Samsung is able to fix it without charging me for the repair, I am under the one year warranty. So just a warning read a whole thread before you try flashing these GB roms. They can kill your phone if you try to go back to stock.
Well then you have not tried Continuim 5 B3. I have tried all the others and find I fast and smooth and am using it as my daily driver. I am addicted to flashing so I will keep trying other gingerbreads but you should at least check it out.
C5 is nice. It's more about staying up with the times for some but it is smooth. This is the same question when froyo came out and I get it but we are in the early stages. When this is lined out you wont move back and all of the people hyping it will test and work out the bugs for the rest. Be happy the hype is going on and others like me test it. You will be rocking it eventually I guarantee.

Dont know about you but i was late to android espcially after the i9000 froyo roms dropped. Running the gb roms helps people that werent into development before reach out into dev work. Making the whole community stronger. Thats just my view on it. Hopefully with a little bit of reading and practice even I can contribute.

And why, in your opinion?
Please, post your answer in this thread, it would be useful for many ppl

There is no best ROM. It solely depends on your preference.
Cassie's XtraLiteRom was the 1st ROM I flashed with. But it removed too many features which I deemed essential.
Then I flashed to DarkyNote ROM. But I encountered too many bugs.
Finally, I flashed Sheep ROM, and have been using it ever since for 2 weeks.
No bugs as of yet. I like its balance of pure stock and optimizations/tweaks.

i started off with darkrom, had it for 2 days, but it was a bit buggy..
then i moved on to rocket, which was pretty good, except it drained the batt faster than stock :S
i'm now on checkrom, i've had it for a week, and i couldn't be more satisfied.. great battery life, i've gotten up to 40hrs on above moderate usage, good performance, and the kitchen pro app that it comes with is amazing.
I also settled on checkrom for the battery life and stability.

Again you're right.
But in this way ppl can save time, making an idea of pro/cons of some ROM.
Do you never look at the rating or comments about an app to decide wether install it or not or wether it worths to try it?
For ROMs I think this kind of opinion is much more important and useful.

Let's be honest here...there IS a best rom at any given moment. There is very little criteria needed to decide which is best:
1) speed/performance
2) battery life
3) functionality/options
4) theme/aesthetica
1 and 2 are pretty straight forward, 3 doesn't have much budge room either and for 4, some people like loud and colorful cartoons on their phones and others prefer a cleaner, more minimalist look.
I can never understand why so many people dislike this kind of best rom thread. There ate a lot of smart, informed people on here who could offer better insights as to the pros/cons of multiple roms, why discourage this?
I've used every rom in the Dev thread and it its crystal clear to me that rocket rom is far and away the best in all the aforementioned categories. Cassies was ok but too thin, sheep rom was good at first but got swallowed up by the competition. Check rom is good but rocket is better, darky flat out sucked and there its no reason to go into the rest.

Can I help me pick a rom too? I'm reading up on Rocket ROM and Check ROM right now though.
Here's what I need:
1 & 2 - Max / best possible combination.
3 & 4 - I may only need highly-significant, innovative changes that you can judge as sort of.. "something you've been missing" while on stock rom. But then again, I may not have much regard for a specific item so I can probably live without it.
THANKS!!
Tbh, DarkyROM really seems to be buggy. I've read too many bug reports in that thread. I tried the ROM myself, and encountered numerous bugs as well.
I'm going to try Rocket ROM to see if jason370's claims are true.
I think we need some AOSP-based ROMs ASAP.
EDIT:
I've tried CheckROM v2 before, too.
I got random bootloops with AbyssNote v2.8, so I was forced to restore back to Sheep ROM.
Only recently received my shiny new Galaxy Note and the first thing I did was root it, CWM it and get the following ROM installed:
CheckROM Revo NoteHD
The reason I opted for this one is that the ROM Kitchen adds a lot of options for customization which means the tweaks I get are decided by *me* and not a ROM developer. So far I have yet to experience any problems with it and it did allow me to overclock. It even goes as far as letting you switch kernels from the device its self, can't fault that!
So far I'm a happy chap and glad I switched from my old iPhone 4!

Running Checkrom on my SGS2 and planning on running the same thing on the galaxy note when i get it this week. its the perfect rom for people who want a stock experience on steroids. Im guessing the note version is basically the same thing.
However, Im kind of shocked about many users reporting bad battery life and laggyness on the note. That was my main problem with most android phones since day 1 and have not had a single issue like that with my sgs2 since ive had it. I was hoping the note would be an improvement over that, I guess i will have to find out.

I have tried Rocket and currently on CheckRom V3.
My personal experience, Rocket has better battery life. I would get atleast 2 days on Rocket. This was on the older V14 version. eybee has already released v17. For the same amount of usage, CheckRom V3 drains in a day.
If you would like to keep all the samsung apps that come with the stock rom without the hassle of trying to figure out which apps you want and which you don't want, Rocket will be good.
CheckRom has the Samsung apps removed. However you can install them from the Kitchen. I like the Kitchen option in CheckRom. If you are open to customizing your rom a lot, this is a good.
+1 for the [JAN 9][XXKL7][2.3.6][FINAL] CheckROM Revo NoteHD™ V3 its running on Steroids!
