I think if you know your kernel etc. you have root rights, am I right?
If yes, just flash the google apps. You find the link in the cyanogen 5.0.7 thread.
If not, I don´t know what you can do
not sure what right i have, m looking for the goole apps .. but is there a market app which can be installed, thanks for your reply by the way. though i was lost for a bit

I'm confused...so did you fix it?
gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed
search for that ^
nope have not fixed it yet. seems like its a original dev phone but it came boxed brand new. in the mean time, the data sync does not open
and
system update gives the error - com.setting error or something like that..
im looking into gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip, thanks for all your help..
You can get Gapps from here:

However Gapps is not an .apk file. You need to flash Gapps with the help of a recovery ROM & for that you need to have Android SDK installed. If all this is latin and greek to you; you should visit here

I would also suggest you to go through ROM Bible sticky in this section.
Alternatively you can unzip gapps file and look for marketUpdater.apk in system>app folder and install it manually. I have not tried this method ever but you can give it a shot; it will not brick your phone.
Thanks for the answer guys, i think i have a dev phone had a look at the rom bible so i can root i . but i dont know what rc versoin the device is cos this does not exist in the build number as in post one. also can you recommend a stable rom update for a beginner.
at amitabhishek the first link you have posted does not work, also is there a way to root a dev phone, or is it already unlocked dont want to try a rom and brick the phone.
Moved as not Android Development.

I hate to say it, but I learned a lot just by reading these forums. Yes, there are threads with 150+ pages of posts, but you will save yourself alot of trouble by learning from others mistakes. Read, read and read. Then you will know what you have, what you need, and what you want to ask....

But definitely READ this section..... all the good mods, kernels and reviews are in here.
techmik67 speaks the truth... I got my first Android phone (THIS ONE) on July 18th and started lurking these forums less than a week later.
Right now I'm installing VMWare and installing Linux as a virtual machine so that I can deox ROMs, all-the-while combing over the Captivate source code in hopes that I might find some clue as to why our kernel is locked to the AT&T modem files. I'm not even kidding =P

Definitely true, I rarely post outside this section, but I've yet to contribute anything short of advice here and there for other people's work when people ask questions.

I am assuming you are talking about a stock Captivate. If you haven't done anything to it, I believe you would see this in SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel: I can't remember
Build number: Eclair
The 1st thing I did next was a 1 click root.
Next, and this is a personal choice, download and install from the thread SREv1.2.1a. If you read that 150+ page thread (most importantly, the OP) it will tell you that it includes some important things, like sideloading enabled and others.
Then see if you want a lagfix
At that point, your settings should now read:
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel: Same I think
Build number: SREv1.2.1a
I would install ROM MANAGER and QUICKBOOT from the market asap. Then consider upgrading firmware (baseband version) from UCJF6 to UCJH2 or JH3. Read the threads. And check my signature to see my setup, which I like alot.

How did you side load? did you actually "install" it, or did you "push" it to your phone? If it is installed, it will be in your app drawer. If you pushed it, you'll need to use the my files program to find the app, and just open it and hit install.
I would suggest reading the SRE thread, because that is probably one of the best way to really get your phone faster.
You can also check out the Unleash the Beast thread. Then check out any lag fix by Tayutama (that is what I use, and I'm not sure on the spelling) because that will make your phone quicker!

i have tried the i9000 rom, which was awesome, but i got tired of that little video call button mocking me so i switched back to stock UCJF6 and did the SRE1.21a.
how would i go about upgrading my firmware without reflashing everything and losing what i have already done? i have read the threads regarding the JH3 rom, but didnt see anything about how to do it without losing my current setup

If I am not mistaken, this is what Titanium Backup is good for.
Rom Manager will help you restore like system restore in windows to EXACTLY as you are, apps, data and all, when you create the backup (which you should ALWAYS do before trying to flash a new firmware or update). Do that now.
Then, get Titanium. Under backup and restore, backup all your apps and app data (will show up white text). Also backup SOME of the stuff in green and red. You can see what to back up. when in doubt, back it up and think twice before restoring it.
If at any time you brick or have problems, boot into recovery, choose reinstall packages which will run update.zip created by rom manager so you can access the clockwork restore menu. Then restore to your backup you made and start over.
Lastly, check out QUICKBOOT in the market. EZ reboot into recovery mode.
oh. i already use those and know how to do backups and recovery. i recovered all my stuff from my i9000 jump to jf6+sre .. guess i will go through the process again.

The $4 for Titanium donate version is well worth it. I did a restore on free, and it took 45 mins of installing apps and pushing buttons. took less than 10 with the donate version with no interaction.
Well I will re-iterate what others have already said. Read.
But here is what I did:
Flash JH3 via Odin
Root via Bugless Pete's Unleash the Beast v0.2
download Terminal Emulator from the market
Type: su
Type: sideloading
By now you are rooted and sideloading is activated and a bunch of bloat ware is gone.
Now install a lag fix (search for Zilch's condensed version of lag fixes)
You can choose between RyanZA's APK in the market or his script or tayatumas update.zip. I also reccomend Chainfires lag fix in the i9000 forums.
Now everything is done: JH3 - Root- Sideloading- lagfix.
Now patiently wait for Supercurios lagfix port for the captivate.
And find a mentor you can secretely stalk and try what they try. There are some people out there who really know what they are doing. Here is aquick list.
Chainfire
Zilch
RyanZA
Tayatuma
Unhelpful
Supercurio
And many more.
Then Read Read Read.

It worked for me multiple times on multiple devices. I updated ota to the latest software, rooted, installed clock work recovery via rom manager. Then I rebooted and started deleting all the bloatware and other unnecessary junk. Good luck.
One click root apk. Its in the themes and apps section. It will not fail you.

I hope my question helps those of us that are not so sure of ourselves.
I have a AT&T Captivate and have finally learned how to root the device. I had no desire to do this, but I find with the articles I've read that FROYO 2.2 really speeds up the system and helps cure many other aliments. I also am amongst the many who really have waited a long time for AT&T/Samsung to release this for this phone, did I mention waited a loooong time
For 2 days now I have read soooo many articles regarding FROYO 2.2 and all the instructions involved. SpeedMod kernel is one I thought would work, then as I read I wasn't so sure anymore. It's way to difficult and I feel like I'm going to destroy my phone if I look away for a second while following steps 1 -44. (yea I know, not that many steps but it sure looks that way!)
Can anybody recommend a Samsung Galaxy S/AT&T Captivate i897 (ROM? Kernel? What's the difference) that is simple to install, stable and easy to remove if necessary. Vids would be nice, but clear instructions would suffice.
Thanks way in advance, Tomween1
I hope this opens doors to those of us incapable of what many take for granted,

Everything you see on the Captivate dev forum installs the same way. To put it simply for you follow these steps please. You can trust me, I have put out 2 ROMS, support them day and night and would never do anything to harm your device.
1. DL the update.zip attached to this post.
2. move the update.zip to your "Internal" SD card
3. DL the ROM of your choice and also put that on your "Internal" SD card.
4. Reboot into recovery. There are a few ways.
a. Three button recovery(power off device, hold the volume up+down while powering on the device. Once you see the ATT screen, release the power button but continue to hold the volume up+down. Choose install zip from sd card and choose the update.zip. Your phone will now reboot, again, choose install from sd card and choose your ROM. it will now install and reboot your phone. Enjoy your new ROM!
b. Use adb to get into recovery and follow the same steps as above.
Kernels and modems work the same way as mentioned above just go a lot quicker. If you have any other questions please askk so you don't ruin your device, just please post in the Q&A.
These are popping up everyday. I wish you luck in your journey but this belongs in q&a. Development is for developers.

The update.zip is Clock work recovery. You need it to flash a custom ROM. Also, it depends on what you want your ROM to do. I put out Phoenix(very popular) and FireFly(getting more popular) I won't say if mine are any better than the rest as myself and the other devs spend countless hours making these for your enjoyment. Great thing about the Captivate is that it is very easy to just flash another ROM should you not be happy with your current configuration. Any other questions you have please either PM or post in the Q&A.
OK so currently I have Superuser Permissions, ROM Manager and Titanium backup installed, Do you still feel I need Clock work recovery?
Also could you link both of the ROMs you've mentioned. My trust is in those that are willing to help. I would like to start with yours.

Thread moved to Q&A.
I would strongly tecomend buging the Pro version of Titianium Backup. If you have a ton of apps and games like I do, with the Pro version its a 1 click restore process where as the free version you have to install everything individually like you where just getting it from the Market! Gets old fast installing 100+ things that way!

As far as what ROM to choose. It's a matter of personal choices. If you look @ the 1st post (OP) of any of these [ROM] threads it will list the characteristics of each. I understand @ 1st it maylook like garble but if you scroll down you will fins app names and such. Also many of them have posted screen shots of the particular ROM.
I suggest find a cpl that you like and flash them all. I spend a day or two on each one to get a feeling on how my battery life is and any bugs that come up. Most bugs will be listed in the 1st few post of a thread.
So just find what your needs are and your styling and flash away!
You can find the links to the ROM's that I'm currently/recently used in my Sig. Only thing not listed there is the Theme I'm using for Firefly 1.5. Which is Generation X. That can be found on the Phoenix site. You can find a link to that in Adam's sig
Happy Flashing!

I believe that if you have ROM Manager installed then CWM is also.
I don't have ROM Manager on my device @ the moment but I think that it's the 2nd option. Something to the tune of Currently Installed Version.
Also you can scroll down that list and simply Reboot into Recovery mode from that menu. See what comes up for your Recovery Manger

Hi
I'm new to forums. But I like this one. People are discussing stuff instead of complaining about their devices. I'm learning a lot. But I still need an answer to my question. And I don't think it's very complex. So I thought maybe I'm posting it wrong. Is there anything else one should do to get there post replied to. Like tagging it in some way. It's not a complaint. I really wanna know to be able ro enjoy the forum fully.
Cheers
You don't need to do anything special. What is your question?
Oh cool
Hi
Thank you very much indeed for replying. I was just wondering if it was safe to update a rooted galaxy 8.9. I got the update message in my settings so it's a proper factory official update but I've never done it before so I was a bit worried after having read about some bricked phones and (don't even know what bricked means but sounds scary).
And if you could answer another question as well please that would be really nice.
Recently my tablet crashed in a weird way so I had to reinstall every single application on my tablet. After the crash every single app was force closing and it asked me for the date and the region. Since then it crashes not very often but regularly. So I thought maybe I need to do a hard reset or even reflash the rom. But now, as far as understand, updating my firmware should sort it out for me. Am I right in thinking so?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have not heard of anyone who has bricked their gt8.9 updating a rooted device. You possible loose root when you update, but you can just flash the root.zip again. In worst case you end up with a soft brick, this can be fixed with flashing stock firmware with Odin.
If you are having random crashes, i would start with factory reset. Please dont forget to backup before, because factory reset will delete everything on your tablet.
Update to latest version. Latest versions are a lot better then early builds.
Hope this helps.
Thank you very much indeed.
Will I be alright following the instructions in this forum's guide on how to use the ODIN?

This thread has nothing to do with me and I have nothing to contribute other than to say that you're a class act, poisike. Too many people on XDA think it's OK to be rude to newcomers and that obnoxious comments about using search add value to the board. +6 internets to you.
