[Q] Multiple CWM Recvry and mystery update.zip - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I successfully installed CWM and flashed stock+voodoo UCKB1 kernel (as CWM indicates voodoo lag-fix is active and Quadrant score is 1528). However, I have a few n00b questions before I jack up my successful install... here's the story:
i897 Captivate
Build: FROYO.UCKB1
Kernel: was 2.6.32.9, now 2.6.32.9 with voodoo lag-fix
Updated to official 2.2 UCKB1 on 2/25, then rooted with SuperOneClick v1.7. All perfect... regularly could access Titanium BU, RootExplorer, etc so SU permission was enabled. I've been wanted to add the voodoo lag-fix, so followed various threads regarding 3e recovery + lagfix. I tried running an "Install.bat" file which was supposed to put a modified 3e recovery file on my phone... but that failed during ADB transfer (script stated "update failed!"). So quickly bailed out and went another route: using RootExplorer, I renamed my stock 3e recovery to "xxx_recovery" and copied the "modified 3e" recovery to /system/bin (renaming it to "recovery"). Rebooted, then rebooted into Recovery hoping to see a "modified 3e" recovery... but alas, was still the blue KB1 3e Recovery. (not sure if I was supposed to see anything different between stock 3e and modified 3e recovery). I think at this point I selected "Reinstall Packages" and rebooted... but still had blue 3e recovery. In any event, I pushed forward... installed ROM Manager... flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, rebooted... then rebooted again into Recovery. I now had the GREEN CWM... so 3e must have been modified to allow CWM recovery to be installed. Then, copied "stock+voodoo-Froyo-I897-UCKB1-unsigned-update.zip" to /sdcard root. Shut phone off, removed external SD, and did the 3-button boot into Recovery. Got the GREEN CWM, and did the "Apply zip from SD card", selected the voodoo zip, and applied. When I rebooted, Voodoo was enabled and life was good... However, now for my questions:
1) It seems I now have 2 CWM recoveries... GREEN v2.5.1.2 which shows in ROM Manager, and RED v2.5.1.3 when I now boot to recovery via 3-button method. So question is: should ROM Manager show v2.5.1.2 or v2.5.1.3 ? Since I have voodoo lag-fix active, should I only reboot to recovery via 3-button and never using ROM Manager?
2) I noticed I now have an "update.zip" file in /sdcard root. I'm not sure which event put it there. Was it when I hit "reinstall packages" from BLUE 3e recovery... or was this created by the CWM voodoo lag-fix flash?
3) Is there a way to determine what this generic "update.zip" file is and should I remove it? (as it might be the modified 3e recovery I no longer need since I have RED CWM).
Sorry for being long-winded... just want to capture all the steps I performed.
Thanks!

Anyone who has Voodoo Lag-Fix have 2 CWM recoveries?
bumping.... where's the love?
Anyone who has installed Voodoo lag-fix on 2.2... if so, in summary have 3 questions:
1. do you have multiple CWM Recoveries? GREEN v2.5.1.2 vis ROM Manager and RED v2.5.1.3 via voodoo kernel.
2. Can/should I delete v2.5.1.2?
3. How can I tell what the "update.zip" package is on my /sdcard root? Did ROM Manager CWM v2.5.1.2 put it there? Can/should it be removed?
Thx.

leave update.zip on the sdcard. its useful for if you go back to a stock kernel that does not have recovery
stop using ROM manager

if I was you I would odin back to stock and then unstall a custom rom much better than official 2.2 just keep your update zip. Its real easy to flash recovery pm me if you need help

Thanks for the replies. Question: if I keep the "update.zip" on root, then sometime later while in CWM recovery I inadvertently hit "apply sdcard: update.zip", what will happen? I think this update.zip is the ROM Manager CWM v2.5.1.2 (Green Recovery). Will it overwrite my CWM v2.5.1.3 (RED Recovery) which I got from Voodoo kernel? Don't want to jack this up as I need RED for voodoo lag fix. Thx.

CWM makes it a tad difficult to "inadvertently" select a feature. Just like when performing brain science or rocket surgery you need to be very careful with your tool of choice.
Even if you do re-flash the update.zip file - no big deal - you already have the contents on your device. No harm, no foul.
2.5.12 will not be overwritten by 2.5.1.3. Supercurio designed the Red version to run with not overwrite it.

Upgrading from RA-heroc-v1.5.2 to v1.6.2

How would I go about upgrading to the new version of the recovery image? Is this pretty much it or is there something within the current recovery I can just click?

I've actually never accessed adb before. What do I have to do before typing "adb shell"? Is there something I have to do so that the cmd prompt recognizes or loads my phone?
You have the option to flash 1.6.2 via rom manager - im using clockwork mod - and decided, after trying darch's recovery that clockwork offers more - including being able to explore the entire sdcard -
is there anything special about 1.6.2 that would make it worth trying out as opposed to clockwork recovery ?

I think some prefer clockword mod but not sure what the differences are. I just want to upgrade to 1.6.2 because it got rid of the some of the bugs.
Here's the thread for it:

This is the easiest way in my opinion:
Download the RA image you want to flash
Put it on the base of your sd card
Open up terminal emulator on your phone
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/name-of-recovery.img
reboot recovery
You should see your new RA image Let me know how it goes!
Thank you sir

[Q] Question about Rom Manager

LinuxNewb said:
It's cool, no worries If you launch Rom Manager your first option should be "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" and then it'll ask your phone version.
- Select Samsung Captivate and it should create an update.zip on your phone that is ~1mb large..........

I have a question about this qoute. If Clockwork makes an "update.zip"' file apon first initialization, what is it needed for? Say if I want to do an update of another mod and that file is an "update.zip" file and I need to use 3button. Only one "update.zip" file can reside in root. So what happens to the one that "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" made. Is it a needed file? Full context of quote is here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8455186&postcount=1314
When you flash a ROM using Clockwork Recovery you load it on with another name.zip; anything but update.zip. So when the phone reboots it runs the Clockwork Recovery update.zip first, which brings you to the Clockwork Recovery screen, where you then flash the new ROM.

Ext2 Z4mod on Obsidian V2 Tested and working.

Here are the Steps I took to convert the data folder to ext 2. I'm sure we can do more folders but I'm unable to write (anyone?) the update scripts.
Start with a fresh install of Team Whiskey's Rom
Goto to the I9000 thread and follow the instruction on uploading a kernel to be repacked.
I selected all the check marks before re packing and downloaded the new kernel.
Download the ext2 update zip from the thread. Rename the zip file to update.zip.
Grab the kernel(tar file) you downloaded from the site and use odin to install.
After booting back up rename the z4mod.ext2.update zip file to update.zip.
Reboot into clockwork and apply update.zip
After booting back up your data file should now be ext2.
To check use terminal emulator our adb and type mount. The data line should now say ext2 instead of rfs.
Note: When I tryed to use the ext2 update zip file without renaming to update.zip it did not work. I continuously recieved SD mount errors.
I can't stress enough to read the topic in the I9000 development thread titled z4mod breaking free from rfs(link below) so you understand what you are doing and the process that is required.
My instruction does not detail that whole process. I'm not responsible for you or what you do by following this brief instruction.
Very Snappy after this mod. Absolutely no issues for me.
Quadrant = 1700
Enjoy!!!

Files I used to get this to work.
zImage.tar (The Zimage I used to repack was taken out of Obsidian V2. (DO NOT USE THIS FOR IMAGE FOR ANY OTHER ROM THAN OBSIDIAN V2)
Also, XDA does not allow uploads of tar files so I compressed the tar into a zip format. Make sure you extract this file and use the .tar file within Odin.
Update.zip - This file was downloaded from the I9000 Z4Mod Thread entitled z4mod.ext2.update.zip. All I did was renamed to update.zip which for some reason allows this conversion process to take place.

Does your kernel have the stock or clockwork recovery? Easy way to check is do adb reboot recovery. If it goes into clockwork then the stock recovery was replaced.
The file you attached is ready to use or do we need to repack?

Bugger, from what I know ClockworkMod has some compatibility issues with JK2 unless the version that z4build uses is compatible.

Seconded. It'd be great to get /dbdata, /cache, /system onto ext4 too (I thought that was the main benefit of z4mod?)

Unlikely as the kernel does not support Ext4.
Also, to anyone who has tried this: Is the kernel from the op already patched? I tried throwing it into the the online patcher and the patcher just spit out a message informing me that what I uploaded was already patch. However, when I jump into recovery, I get recovery 2e and not clockwork, which leads me to believe otherwise.
Perhaps odin did not actually install it?
how did u boot into clockwork? 3 button or through rom manger? it doesnt work for me with three button still says can not mount
hoipefully someone adds to the script so it can convert more partitions.
How did you get into Clockwork recovery if you replaced the update.zip file the stock recovery uses to get into it?
I booted through RomManager. It gave the little green Android dude with the download box and got right into recovery. Working great so far.

Yes, I figured out that the Z4 patch kernel replaces the stock recovery with clockwork.

the way this phone is set up has the recovery image packaged with the kernel in the file called zImage. when u use the z4mod to modify that zImage file, the website unpacks the whole zImage file, does its thing with the kernel modding, and now (i say now because this is a newer feature) replaces the standard 2e recovery with clockwork recovery. when you flash the zImage, whether repackaged in a rom or as a tar in odin, the new clockwork recovery is flashed to '/system/bin/recovery' replacing the 2e recovery. i have confirmed this by running the command 'recovery' from terminal while booted after flashing a z4modded kernel. i do not recommend trying to run recovery while booted as the phones display started going crazy.
the problem with having clockwork mod as the primary recovery is the fact that there is a major issue with mounting both the internal sd and external sd (even one at a time as well as both together) as clcokwork mod reports it doesnt recognize device at 'mmcblk0' or 1 when clockworkmod recovery is the primary recovery.

That's why I backed out of it and went back to the stock kernel - that and the fact there was a weird flicker at the top of the screen when booting.

E: can't open /cache/update.zip - need help

Hi folks.
Having some problems everytime I try to boot in recovery mode or try to install a ROM using ROM Manager.
when my phone boots into manual recovery mode, I eventually get this message.
E: can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation Aborted
I've made sure I have my update.zip in the root of my internal sd. In manual recovery mode, I even selected the "reinstall packages" option and it would execute just fine and then reboot my phone.
So I'm stuck scratching my head as to why I get the error message above and can't access the additional menu items in the manual recovery mode.
Help please as I am a noob to this hacking stuff.
THanks everyone!
after you reinstall packages and it reboots, do you select reinstall packages again? you should because it takes 2 times to get into clockworkmod

There's your problem. Your new file should NOT be named update.zip. The update.zip package MUST be the one for CWM. Its this update.zip that is used when you choose reinstall package and then you get into 2e recovery mode.
Name your file something different so it won't interfere with the update.zip of CWM on your sd root.
If you deleted that CMW update.zip file just return in CMW and reinstall the Recovery. It will push the update.zip again.
Not sure I completely understand.
to give clearer picture, here is where my update.zip file is located.
/sdcard (folder)
within the /sdcard folder are the following:
/Android
/clockworkmod
/DCIM
/download
/layar
/media
/sd
/tmp
...and finally, my update.zip file
so I'm assuming the update.zip is in its proper location within the /sdcard folder
With the file there, I reboot into manual recover and select reinstall packages...it executes and the phone boots up and turns on. It doesn't return me to the manual recovery mode again and I'm assuming it is during the return to the manual recovery mode where I can access additional menu items such as install from SD.
So I'm assuming this update.zip file I have now is the one for CWM. Thoughts?
at what point did you FLASH clockwork recovery manager? are you sure that update.zip file thats on there isnt for something else like the root?
to be honest, at this point I'm not entirely sure. the update.zip could be for the root.
what do you mean by flash clockwork recovery manager...when I go into ROM Manager, under the Recovery heading I see the following options.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2)
Reboot into Recovery

-First delete every update.zip you have in /sdcard
-Return in ClockworkMod and tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (yes it will reinstall the recovery, thus copying the right update.zip onto the /sdcard).
-Now rename your .zip you were trying to install (ie. my_new_file.zip)
-Copy it in /sdcard
-Reboot into Recovery and select Reinstall Package (if it goes directly into the recovery menu even better)
-Now you should be in the CWM Recovery.
-Select the "install zip from sdcard"
-Select your "my_new_file.zip" to flash it.
-Reboot in normal mode.
ok...so I went into ROM Manager application and tapped on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
A status bar displayed and it completed like in a second or 2. Then I went into my /sdcard directory and there is no update.zip file there. Doesn't seem like it is copying the update.zip file into the directory.
No biggy, just means the recovery is correctly installed.
Just follow the procedure and try it like it is and see if you get a error.
flashing clockwordmod recovery doesn't install an update.zip on your sd card (1 click roots do).
All flashing CWM recovery does is install clockwork recovery in place of standard recovery mode.
ok...so I've deleted the update.zip file from the /sdcard directory.
went into ROM Manager and clicked on Flash ClockworkMode Recovery
Rebooted my phone and got to the <2e> screen. I click on reinstall packages and now it gives me an error message that the update.zip cannot be found.
So then I used z4 root to unroot. I then rooted my phone again and found that it didn't place an update.zip in the /sdcard directory. So it appears without the update.zip in the /sdcard directory I cannot reinstall packages. But if I put the update.zip file back into the /sdcard directory, I can reinstall packages, but then I'm back to the same issue again....feels like a never ending loop.
ok...finally got things to work. Looks like I had the wrong update.zip file in my /sdcard.
I searched the forums and found the correct one that now allowed me to reinstall packages twice and take me to the full recovery menu.
for others that may need the update file, it is located here:

That was it!
Awesome, thanks! I had just returned my Captivate to AT&T for a replacement today, and I was pretty convinced the shysters had made it harder for me to re-root and mod my phone. Now, how do I wire you a beer?
If you downloaded with your phone right after rooting, make sure you delete the update from the general sd card folder and move the update from your download folder to the general sd card folder. I had flashed with odin and rom manager last night and i had to install it that way due to fact clockwork has been down.

ROM Manager Reboot?

Slight issue here, not sure if anyone has had it before.
Just acquired a Captivate as an xmas gift to myself (sick of that iPhone), and began the whole process of getting a new ROM onto it. Rooted, installed ROM Manager, flashed a clockworkmod recovery (2.5.1.2), and hit "Backup Current ROM".
The device reboots into the standard recovery mode with the usual options (reboot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data).
No backup is made, and I just have to continue the reboot. I've tried flashing to an older version, clearing the download cache, and using the option to go to ROM Manager's recovery mode (just takes me to the default recovery boot).
Am I doing something wrong here? I followed all of the instructions step by step.

Try doing "reinstall packages".
Steps:
1. Copy the clockwork recovery "update.zip" attached to this post to ur sdcard root.
2. Reboot to recovery.
3. Select "reinstall packages".
4. It would say something like replacing recovery with clockwork recovery, and reboot into recovery. This happens only the first time u use this.
5. Select "reinstall packages" again.
6. You should be in clockwork recovery.

Ok. I'll explain to the best of my knowledge.
The zip I gave u is the most non-intrusive way of CWM. No ROM manager installer is needed on phone apart from placing this zip on sdcard root.
When the phone boots up, it loads the default recovery console. When we select "reinstall packages", it loads "update.zip" on the sdcard root by default. Since the update.zip we have there is the CWM zip, it loads it therby loading CWM console.
If u don't want CWM, just delete this update.zip.
Hope this helps.
I have this exact same issue ROM Manager is doing nothing but rebooting into recovery. So if I use your workaround, I need to keep this update.zip file on my device at all times?

Yes best to do so
All ROM Manager does is download the update.zip that was posted and put it on your SD Card. The other steps need to be done regardless.

I got the ROM backup working. I guess I was too impatient the first time. I cleared/moved a lot of stuff off my internal SD card too....doubt that it mattered.
But it works quite well.
