Have a rooted nook, and I would like to know if an app is out there that can download a book cover (from amazon/bn/wherever) and load it up on the BN reader so it is associated with PDF file.
Ideas? Thanks!

Nook app doesn't read PDFs - only ePubs. The usual suspects read PDFs of course. The ease of reading PDFs is defeated by its inability to save pages, to highlight, to remember where you were. Etc.

PDFs perform well when opening them from a file explorer, like ES file explorer, and opening the file with the B&N Reader app. This is not the same as opening or accessing the file from the Library app. Using the reader app, you can see the book cover and use bookmarks. Reading and page turning also is better. Also, larger PDFs seem to open a little better from the internal memory.

What's a good app for reading PDF books? I'm just using Adobe reader right now and wanted to see if there are any better ones for the NC.
EDIT: Was just snooping around the other forums and noticed that the Aldiko that came with the Galaxy S has pinch to zoom. The versions on the market do not! When trying to install the one included on the Galaxy S, I receive "application can not be installed"
Any chance someone could port the Galaxy S version over to the NC? it would be a great epub/pdf reader app.

You might try ezpdf reader from unidocs, which is in the market. See also their twitter page of features at http://twitter.com/#!/ezpdf
Repligo appears to be the best for me. ezpdf feels unrefined and buggy. The interface looks really nice though.
Im using the built in app on the nook. Dnt open your pdf from Library because it forces you to use quickpdf. If you open the pdf from something like astro or root explorer,there's an app called Reader, and im loving it.

I prefer ezpdf and think it is good and worth the 99ct and I like the following with it:
+ remembers the last page read/bookmarking +
+ Zoom option - Fitting to text column
I agree that the user interface is not perfect yet and in some areas a bit buggy.

I tried that already, but it doesnt allow me to zoom.
Does anyone have an app that will allow me to highlight and annotate pdfs? I am considering returning the nc if I can't get this feature. I am rooted and willing to even pay a few dollars for an excellent PDF reader which will allow me to annotate and highlight.

I thought i saw on one the market when i was searching "PDF" or "PDF reader"
There should be an app for highlighting, but not sure about annotating.
I tried out various PDF readers trying to find something workable to read some Marvel comics I have that came from GIT Corp DVDs. The Android readers worked ok, but it took 7-10 seconds to go from page to page accessing them from my SD card. I finally went to remoting in to my Windows desktop (using PocketCloud free) and using the Adobe Reader on the PC to read them. It ended up being much faster !
Weird. Repligo takes like 1-2seconds to flip the page. This is with 75-130mb pdf's
I'm going to try clearing the defaults for the "Library" app (via Nook Color Tools / Settings) and see if launching a PDF after that presents a menu rather forcing "QuickPDF".
Perhaps the class of the SD card in use might be to blame for the perfomance lag while page turning?

Maybe it's that these comics consist of 2-page color images. Maybe it's because I have the files on the SD card... the Duracell card I have tests out as Class 4. Anyway... none of the PDF readers (including RepliGo, Adobe Reader and ezPDF) I've tested gave reasonable performance paging through these files.
ezpdf seems the fastest, but simple question, how do you bring up the overlay interface again once it disappears? I couldn't seem to bring it up all the time.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I liked the way Reader handles my huge company manuals.
I have root explorer and it took some looking to find my documents folder and I can't imagine doing that every time I need to reference my manuals. Is there a way to "assign" this Reader to open pdf files instead of Quickoffice?
Or would I be be better off with something like Dropbox.apk?

Astro can create a shortcut on your launcher screen directly to any specific folder. This might work for you if you keep all your manuals in one place. The folder still gets opened in Astro, but at least you don't have to navigate around to find it every time.

The newest version of RepliGo Reader (3.0) has the ability to highlight and annotate PDFs. It works reasonably well.
I love ezpdf, blazing fast, frequently updated, cost a pittance.

this one took me a bit to figure out, but I second this. It acts just like any book in the reader instead of having to re-size and down swipe to change pages.

I hate how the new repligo reader doesn't retain zoom levels when you flip pages. Other than that its pretty good.
After rooting my nook color to gain access to the market, I downloaded the free acrobat reader apps. However, I don't know how to open a file using it. When I double click a pdf, the pdf is opened with quickoffice without asking me to choose. When I open acrobat reader itself, I don't see a menu to open a file.
I know this is a silly question. Could someone tell me how to use the acrobat reader?

somewhere there is a setting to choose the default program for pdf's. You'll need to clear that setting and then select the adobe reader as the default.

Hi, I use Dropbox to move files among computers and NC. When I hit a pdf file in Dropbox on the NC, it is downloaded and then I'm presented with the option of opening it with either adobe reader, quickoffice, or reader (the pdf file will be saved in the Dropbox folder). Another option is to transfer/save your pdf files to the adobe folder on your NC (mine is on the SD card). If the pdf files are already on my NC, I use Astro to move them around to the folder of my choice.
I have Adobe Reader on my Nook Color and when I open the app, it opens right to a file picker with two tabs. The first is Recently Viewed and the second is PDF Files.
My PDF's are in /sdcard/My Files/Books/PDF
If you have Root Explorer, I'd suggest navigating to your PDFs in Root Explorer and clicking on one. It should prompt you for the app you want to use and instead of using Adobe Reader or Quickoffice, try the Reader app. It does a nicer job of displaying the PDFs I've tried it with.

MobiPocket Reader. Looks like it is right protected format so there is probably nothing that can read it.

Amazon Kindle app will read MOBI files.
After you install Kindle app, just drop ebboks into the kindle folder that is created on your SDCARD. You may need to close and reopen Kindle to see the ebooks.

Calibre, a free program on the PC, can also convert a mobi file into just about anything you want, such as epub. Then you can read them in your ebook reader of choice.
To make it easy to then move them onto your Android phone, many popular reader apps (like my fave, Moon+ Reader) access your Calibre library directly if you are on the same wifi network, and Calibre has their own app for accessing your library from an Android device.

So I just recently discovered the real beauty of E-books and the awesome capability of the Xoom in this activity. My question is what are the settings everyone's using to convert their PDF's into E-book format in Calibre? I'm pretty lost in a lot of the settings and all of my PDF's loose their colorful pictures and such when I convert them.. I'm also playing with Aldiko, Kindle, and Nook for viewing my books.. Whats everyone else's preference?
I just have mine set to generic e-ink and then I just convert any pdf to epub and it works great. I have not made any changes to any of the settings. If you have played around with your settings then just revert them back to default and try it again.
The problem I am having is that I have a few magazines that were scanned into PDFs. If I use QuickOffice to view the pdf the font is small, but very crisp and clear. The only issue I have with this option is that I can not save where I left off reading and the page turning is not as smooth. I do not care about the fancy page transitions, although Google Books does look nice. I would like just a simple button to advance pages. With QuickOffice you have to drag the page and it does not snap to the next page.
I tried using Calibre and then reading in Aldiko or using Adobe Reader and the fonts do not render nearly as crisp as using QuickOffice. Does anyone have some suggestions?
These magazines have plenty of color pictures so I do not want to loose those either.

For large PDF files (like magazines for example) I have found that converting them to epub format is a waste because it lags when you open it using any of the book readers. You can use Adobe/Quickoffice/Documents to Go but like you mentioned, the only downside is that you cannot create a bookmark so you always have to find your way back to where you left off. If you do convert the files how ever to epub and they are not too big then I found that the problem is that most scanned magazines just do not appear right since you may have 2 magazine pages scanned to one pdf page, images distort how the text looks or where it is located, etc. Another solution is use a comic viewer to read the magazines but this takes too long to create sometimes but it is much better than using a book reader since coming viewers handle large file sizes very well.
My problem is that the PDF's I convert to Ebooks lose all their formating. There is not seperation between lines anymore, the text is all one size, page breaks get deleted, so on and so forth.. They look terrible.. I wonder what type of PDFs everyone else is converting with so much success..
Folks- I'm interested if anyone reads magazines on their nook HD+.
I downloaded some PDF magazines and I'm trying to find a good way to read them. The text is very small and zooming is a pain.
I downloaded a sample magazine from nook store, and it worked great it even had an article view.
I downloaded a free magazine from Google play magazines and again the text was really small and hard to read.
Any tips - am I missing something? Do you just have to zoom in?
I use the google magazines app for Motorcycle Cruiser. I set it to text only and it is perfect for reading the articles.
1. Open mag
2. Single click in the middle of screen
3. Top menu should appear
4. Choose option "view text"
To revert follow same steps and choose "exit text"

It doesn't allow you to side load your own magazines unfortunately, so I'm still trying to find a good way to view pdf magazines.
I use adobe reader for side loads. You do have to zoom but it refreshes pretty quick.

I wish someone would figure out how to get the Stock ROM NOOK app working in CM. I have a couple mag subscriptions and the difference in the magazine reader is HUGE. That is the only thing I use the Nook reader for. Does anyone know of a way to open B+N purchased magazines with another app?

First, the nook reader itself is what makes the magazines so awesome. I'm not sure that, even if you were successful in opening the magazines in another app, that they would be the same.
Second, the magazines are stored in a root only access area so you need to be rooted to get at them (/data/nookmedia).
Third, even if you got to the files, they are probably DRM protected so other apps could not use them. You should be able to use DRM removal software to free them up though.

Are books stored in /data/nookmedia also?
The reason I ask is because I transferred a lot of epubs (drm free) and they appear in the library as files, they do not appear on the Book shelf. I would like them to appear as books (which they are).
Solution: root and copy them to the /data/nookmedia folder?

Yes books are stored there too. But I don't know if your proposed solution will make them appear in the library. I guess you could try.
