I'm in IT and plan on most likely getting a Captivate from work for my job. I will be using VPN to connect to my work network (ipsec) and then using a remote desktop app to support people remotly when I am not in front of a computer. (No WiFi at work)
I currently have an iPhone 4 as a personal phone, and I know that I can use the logmein app to connect to computers and use the phone at the same time. I'm assuming I can do this on the captivate also. I was hoping to get the fascinate for the flash, and the fact that Verizon works much better at one of my remote offices, but the fascinate will not be able to do voice + data at the same time right? Also from what I read it has less RAM available.
Does anyone else work in IT and use this phone? What are your experiences with it as far as helping you on the job?

2) It is likely that the VZW will not be able to do both transmissions at once, based on network type, but since I don't have VZ, or access to a fascinate.. ICSFS
3) Does Verizon really work that much better (actual experience) or is it just what the bars on the phone say... don't trust the bar display as an accurate detail.

I can give you some incite in the IT category. I maintain multiple networks with the company I work for, and there are a handful of apps on the market place that act as an RDP connection for logging on to servers and whatnot with a FQDN (Which I'm sure would work with the IP, but haven't personally tried it). Of course, if you use listen/forward on certain ports, you can get into those as well. My company uses a program that utilizes an instance of VNC to manage the workstations. I haven't had the time to sit down and try to crack that one yet, but I'm sure it could be done somehow. Our company just made the switch over to Google Apps hosted email so I've never used Exchange with it, but I've heard it works just fine.

Ah yes, we all use Outlook. Calendar invitations import right into Google calendar perfectly. Contacts/email can be synced using Samsung Kies, but only with the default TouchWiz launcher, which I do not prefer. Dropbox works perfectly, yay!
Off the top of my head that's all I can think of. If you have any questions regarding certain areas, please let me know, and I'll give you as much info as I have.
* Oh, and I can confirm, Verizon does not support Voice+Data at the same time. My buddy has a DROID X and he can't even get an email while on a call, much less have an RDP session going.
Here's my IT experience. I personally think the stock email has issues. Everything works fine except for 2 things:
1. Emails are not instant. I thought I had a bad phone, swapped it, and no improvement. With any other phone I had previously owned (iPhone 3g, HTC Fuze, Blackjack II), emails would always arrive at the same time or even before Outlook would get them. Now I get anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minute delay.
2. No NTLM support. Even with an iPhone I can connect to local wireless using Safari and use my domain authentication to access our intranet. I have yet to find a way to negotiate windows authentication on this android. I hear that mozilla is putting out a mobile browser (Fennec I believe) that may support it. Or hopefully 2.2 will add this functionality.
There are clients for RDP and even a couple for VNC. I installed one for VNC but never used it. I used WYSE RDP and love it.
Other than those 2 issues,i love it. I haven't tried setting up the VPN yet (pointless to me without NTLM), but that's all I'm missing.
I wish I had a tab or phone that I could install something like an admin tool pack on that would give me Active Directory tools on the go (besides the obvious RDP to a server). Maybe I'll have to wait for a windows phone 7 tablet........unless someone knows something I don't, I'd loved to hear some good news.

I am in IT as well and find this to be leaps and bounds better when coming from blackberry 9700
I use remote rdp and logmein ignition. I have direct push with exchange 2007 and the Gal is supported.
One complaint i have is with the email client. If you have rules setup to automatically sort mail without it being read, gl finding it on the phone. I had to turn all rules off and have everything delivered to the inbox.
Other then that i can pretty much do everything i think except dell drac console. But i hardly ever need to use those and if i did, i got bigger problems and should whip out the laptop.

I'll second what was said here, as a server admin, my phone is indispensable. I use VNC and RDP all the time, leave my home computer signed into VPN(it's a work provided laptop that has port 3389 forwarded) and just RDP into that, and then use it on my work domain. Or use the mobile AP functionality with a netbook running 7 Enterprise w/ VPN. No worrying about hotspot locations.
Exchange works great for me on it, no issues with active sync on E2k7. I do kind of wish we had an OCS 2007 R2 compliant messaging app for it. That's about all I could really use that isn't already available.

For me, ActiveSync to the Captivate is as fast as my BlackBerry 9700 using BES which is pretty darn fast! Now if only the email client worked with all my sub-folders and allowed me to move emails, etc., I'd be happy.
Search for issues with IMAP and Exchange accounts on the ANDROID platform. I've personally had my IMAP and Exchange email accounts disappear from my phone completely, 3 times in the last month.
This is a know issue across all the Android phones and a problem that is still present in Froyo, kinda disappointing that Google can't get their act together and fix this MAJOR issue.....
There are great email replacement apps out there that solve the problem. The best replacement in my opinion at least is K9. I wouldn't use the version in the Market as it's a few versions old but the latest releases can be found on the googlecode page.

Android is in its infancy. How many version of windows mobile where there before you got activesync direct push access? Did you have exchange support on the original iphone?
Clearly anyone with a brain can see that the android platform is the most open platform today and compared to all others is more like an actual computer then just a phone.
I came from a blackberry and I hate to admit that I was a fanboy for the last 5 years or so... But after going android, the blackberry is the biggest pos and I give RIM 2 years before they become PALM.
The fact that you can run a 3rd party app that can handle your email, your phone or your sms functionality is amazing. However hard developers try to make a one size fits all... it may work for majority, but not all.
I have had zero issue with android and exchange activesync. My accounts don't disappear. Maybe you should take a look at your environment and see what is going on behind the scenes on your mail server or probably at your crappy anti-spam filter. I got emails instantly on my captivate before i get them on my computer, just like my blackberry did.
Yeah, must be my filters causing the account settings to be wiped from my phone on multiple accounts instantaneously....

Kinda hard to make progress on a platform when your preventing the corporate world from adopting due to serious issues with non Gmail accounts?
I'm a Sr. Sys admin and my experience using the captivate on the job has been great. By connecting to our wpa2 enterprise I've SSH'd into routers and switches using Better Terminal (BTEP SSH Client). It's great not having to drag a laptop and a rollover cable into a server room while working with a switch. I've used the WYSE's beta client which supports RDP, VNC and VM View. I'm also a big fan of Astro file manager which has an add-on for connecting to SMB shares. We've also setup a Rove Mobile Admin server. it's an SSL encrypted publicly accessible server which utilizes an android app from which i can manage everything from BES, to SQL, to Exchange, to AD. Its an expensive license but very very well worth it. and while i do think the stock active sync client is usable i've found that TouchDown offers a much more advanced product complete with meeting invites and GAL support. Again, this is a great phone for for IT work!
Hmmm, I just wonder what is different about the heartbeat to Exchange with Android than it is with every other phone. I agree it could be some mysterious setting that needs adjusted on Exchange, but I'll probably worry about it after we upgrade from 03 to 07.

Ok, I'm stuck at work and our net was down today, so maybe I missed something, excuse me if I'm wrong.
I'm wondering about:
Xbox Live, me and my friends and some people I met on Game Center, we play COD(call of duty) Zombies, and we all chat it up while we're playing. You know like, "watch this door, and I'll watch this side", or "come help me". Basically it's Xbox Live on the phone. What I'm wondering is, has Microsoft mentioned this today? Any word on real time multiplayer gaming? Voice chats?
Next question. I read that the new mapping service has disabled voice navigation for all except Nokia. Is this true? I'll post links to this specific article later. That's a real bummer if true.
I read dragging and dropping is supported, and iTunes is supported. That's great.
I can't stop thinking about the new lock screen features and I can wait to try that out.
Any word on Google Talk being built in? It uses a open standard.
Next question, notifications. I know the star screen can be setup to view all of your information. However, what if I'm in a app doing something else? Any word on notification improvements?

There is no new Chat or VoIP Services built-in to the system. Apps can extend the VoIP functionality though (and given that Skype does this which also uses Instant Messaging it should be doable with GTalk as well - but my guess is that Google again won't do anything).
The Maps-App does no longer integrate Voice guided navigation which was only available in the US anyway. Routing launches an App to do this. According to this post by Nokia in June Nokia Drive will be available for all WP8 devices: http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/06/20/nokia-drive-for-all-windows-phone-8-smartphones/ so that will most likely be launched from there.
Regular notifications have not changed - Toasts and Live Tiles as before (aside from the Lock screen changes).

There is the everlasting app question that´s holding me back, so, if anybody could give me a headsup if the following is available ...well, it would be nice:
1. An app/tool like myphonexplorer (http://www.fjsoft.at) to a) write sms on pc b) backup these c) sync
2. is there a vnc server available (did not find anything) for winphone? or is this possible with winphone8?
3. I´m aware that there´s no real notification center - but what if you have a news app installed (say cnn for example) and some breaking news is coming in. is there something like a popup on ios/iphone?

1.) There is no local sync functionality with Windows Phone. All PIM data has to go through ExchangeActiveSync which means GMail/Outlook.com or another MailServer like Exchange. SMS can be backed up to the Cloud although there is no export functionality (Apps can't access a users SMS in WP8).
2.) There is no VNC server as Apps can't access other Apps visual state. I don't know why you would need a server on the phone anyway. Looking through the Marketplace brings up several VNC Clients, I didn't test any of them though.
3.) There are Toast-notifications that pop down from the top of the screen. Those are displayed for a set amount of time (some seconds) and then vanish (or you can swipe them away to make them disappear before that or tap on them to be taken to the App). Aside from that there are tile-notifications that display info on the Live Tiles. Which of those features an App uses and how information is displayed on the tile is up to the App's developer.

I´m asking all this because i don´t always have my phone in my hands and accessing most of it functions via a browser was a *huge* plus in the past for me (especially with the mentioned aidroid).
With the current official APIs it's not possible. Perhaps someone could hack something like this in the future but as always I would not count on this. It didn't happen for WP7 for sure.
So in the end I guess that's a no.

I've been playing with WP8 for quite sometime now, i love it so much that it's gonna be my next OS to go - Nokia probably.
But today was kinda threating my WP8 dream having come across words of several limitation of WP8 over android.
Below is a list of most important features that i feel are important for me that i find in Android:
1. File Manager / Explorer
2. Sideloading app
3. Root access to do Titanium Backup, Freeze Bloatwares, insert app (or adb push) to root directly
4. Car mode / Car home
5. 3rd party music player with Direct Leveling Control (somethng like PowerAMP)
6. Simple customisation of ringtone, fonts, other UI / notificaton stuffs
7. NFC Task Launchers (programming tasks to a NFC tag like turning off WiFI, on GPS, enter Car Mode, launch navigation software)
+8. Possibility of USB OTG
I know WP8 is a different OS and works differently, but are there any way that my list is still available, if not any similar feature? Or is WP8 giving me even better deals?
I really love WP8 i hope the switch will be a good choice for me to pick. I need some advices for now.

File manager/exploere is possible but only if you connect your phone to your PC but no access to system files, Side Loading is only possible if you have a deve account You can sideload apps you download from the store off of your SD card but that's about it for now. Forget about root access, MS has blocked root access methods and one hasn't been found yet.
As far as customisations, on the start screen you can only change the tile size and the tile colors to pre-installed ones and from a black background to a white one (Lame). There is no home or start screen wallpaper you can only use a pic on the lock screen. As far as ringtones you can.
Not sure on the NFC stuff.

I use a regular gmail account with exchange and setup the push notifications to actually only check once an hour as battery life seemed to be impacted a bit but as for calendar, email and contacts...all of those sync nearly instantly and work well.
I know that people also use Google Sync and the email setup wizard for Gmail without a problem as well. I have always just used the 'Exchange' setup option with Gmails server etc. TMI?
Not TMI at all, I was curious because of all those articles about Google cutting support for WP, and no one really wrote what's then situation now, they just listed a bunch of protocols that aren't supported anymore.
So everything works seamlessly? I don't want to open a hotmail account and deal with forwarding emails and all that.

Google anounced that they would cut support for new connections using Exchange ActiveSync at the end of January. Devices set up to sync with GMail before then will continue to work like before. In Mid-January that date got pushed back to July. So until July you can setup ActiveSync and keep using it after that.
It is likely that Microsoft will issue an update for WP8 before then enabling CalDAV and CardDAV-support although there are no guarantees. We also don't know wether they will add IMAP-idle to allow for GMail-Push-Mail or if you will be limited to mail checking in set intervals (this is currently already possible as an alternative to Exchange ActiveSync).
We'll have to wait how that plays out but for now nothing has changed yet.

I'd say it depends on what type of android user you are. If you just user the phone, sms, browsing and occasional app then you're fine. If you're a power user then you'll just get annoyed and frustrated at simple things that you use yo be able to do but now can't.
As I've said in the windows 1520 thread, its undoubtedly a gorgeous piece of hardware and is the prime drive for me to keep looking into windows phone. Dare I say it and definitely not trying to be a troll, but if it did run android, I'm sure myself and others would buy it in a flash.
Sticking with realities though, I don't think WP8 is quite there yet for the advanced android user. I'm still very concerned that without DPI settings/apps with phablet UI, that the 1520 is just going to be running blown up phone apps, like first gen android tablets, which is not ideal.
File browser is key and offers so much flexibility. Copying and sharing photos off your DSLR, sending whatever file you want through gmail, deleting downloaded files etc. Skydrive is not a suitable replacement, especially if you're not always on wifi/limited 4G data plans.
Apps is becoming less of an issue with most of the core apps there in some shape and using 3rd party official apps is not something I worry about. It is still an issue however for niche apps. Eg Niche medical apps, a reliable CHM file reader (reference text books), advanced pdf reader/editor with the ability to underline/comment/draw in.... I can go on. Even office 365 functionality that is supposedly a huge selling point is largely replaceable with Kingsoft office which is superb sans the synching (you just need the extra step of google drive).
Then there are the core google services which have really exploded in functionality to become more than just gimmicks in the past 12 months. – Chrome browser with its desktop session synching, google now with its local contextual searches, automatic G+ photo uploader (full size backups with auto enhancement unlike dropbox).
Lets not mention 3rd party accessory compatibility with Windows Phone...ie. there APIs are so closed that no BT keyboards work with it for example.
There's a lot which is being fixed and is "promised" to be fixed in upcoming updates from MS – unfortunately thats always been the story with WP as they play catchup, which I understand being a new OS. However, 12 months on, even basic things like notification centre, screen rotation lock, separate notification ringtones, separate notification/system volumes are still yet to be fixed/only being patched now.
In terms of positives of the windows phone os, to be honest there isn't anything that appeals to me that I'm not already experiencing in android. Metro UI I don't mind but can be hit and miss with no notification centre and when you're relying on 3rd party live tiles which don't always update frequently enough for your liking (and wit no option to change). Simplicity is always touted as a windows phone advantage, but to be honest I find android simple enough if you know what you're doing and the appeal is more for perhaps people new to smartphones. As an android user, the simplicity actually feels limiting as I can't get things to work exactly how I want it to. In short it's a matter of how much I can compromise when coming from Android to wp on the software side unfortunately.
Having said all this I'd still keep looking at WP due to Nokia's hardware and their general nailing of the camera (which android hasn't accomplished fully yet), but there needs to be a lot of improvement on the software side from MS and 3rd party developers before I can fully see myself changing platforms. As good as the hardware and camera may be, my smartphone is my mobile computer replacement and the OS needs to be able to function like that.
Perhaps when RT merges with 8.1 and a few more MS and Nokia updates roll out it'll get more capable and phablet friendly. But until that time I'm keep jealously watching and admiring in awe at the camera and hardware but deep down knowing I just can't do what I want to do on it right now.

Something like Tasker or automatic volume adjustment will require homebrew, or at least an OEM app; third-party apps aren't allowed to run continuously in the background (it's bad for performance and battery life) on WP.

yes you can listen music and working here drive+ navigation in same time... music temporally get lower and pause when navigation give voice direction

youtube no, because when you switch to start screen or other app automatically stop playing (but only tried in official YT app and SuperTube)
Here Drive will run fully in the background (battery warning: don't forget to stop it if you take a break somewhere short of your destination!) and will override other audio playback to give directions. Start Here Drive, enter directions and start navigation, then hit Start (or press-and-hold Back) and go to your media player app. You should continue getting turn-by-turn prompts. It doesn't actually pause the audio, which is annoying - you'll miss bits of songs or audiobooks, for example - but it works.
