OK, we all know that flashing can become a tad addictive and I had, therefore, decided to stick with Darky 9.3 with SpeedMod, which I found to be very stable with great speed.
I have made all the required customisations and wanted to keep this for some time.
However, I could be tempted to try 2.3 if this would bring greater speed and extended battery runtime.
So, the question is: do you expect an increase in performance and extended runtime with 2.3 over Darky 9.3 (ie stay put or update)?

Speak for yourself not the enitire world please.
Im getting 3 days with a decent amount of use battery from full to like 5%.
Gmail and facebook sync on. Fancy widget updating every 2 hours.
HSDPA on all the time.
few phonecalls a day.
Maybe 20 txt messages a day sent and recieved.
check for updates in market place every day.
So NO the battery life doesnt suck at all.
And how the hell is it bloated?
Hi zolah ...
im agreeing with you , Darky is always one of the best, and remains so..
Go ahead and install JV1 Gingerbread (or any rom based on this) if you don't play 3D games and don't mind the memory leaks.. Have fun now

So wait, are you running JV1? If so how did you get games to even work? or How did you manage to install a gingerbread modem into a froyo rom without crashes etc?
what's with the 'this rom is best and that rom sucks' talk? You gotta find a rom that suits you. Can't say Doc's is better or Darky's is better.. Both are one of the best, it just depends on what you want. Doc's for customization, Darky's for a great 'out of box' experience. Doc's ROM is not that famous for no reason. Likewise for Darky's...
Try all the ROMs, then stick to the one you like.

Recently us very lucky vibrant users started being able to flash the plethora of roms available to you i9000 owners! I've skimmed through the devs section and saw all the roms you have at your disposal.
SO, here's my question. Which rom would you guys recommend? I've tried darky's v9.3 beta 3 already, and I like it thus far (aside from some random FCs here and there). Is there another one that you guys like more? I've also noticed a lot of people use serendipity. Any thoughts?
Any HELPFUL input would be greatly appreciated. I know that it's based on personal preference, but that's kinda the point of this post. I want to see what you guys PREFER and maybe even some reasons why. Thanks!
Well I use the stock one and DamianGTO Ultimate kernel and simply loving it , smooth, stable and long battery life . But i can recommend Draky's one i've played with it for some time
Stock 2.2.1 and speedmod kernel no need for a custom rom (even without a lagfix) you can make it to your liking , freezing apps you dont need (there is a list which can be frozen/erased) and etc. Fast, reliable, humongous battery life.
hm... I might try that as well.
I use Darky 9.2 with speedmod. Smooth, good battery life.
I've got a vibrant as well and I'm curious what people think of Insanity and Serendipity?
I use js5 2.2.1 full clean flash in odin phone has run super quick since so js5 use all three file with 803 pit version clean is best

Depends what you are running? And whats on. (like wifi, 3G etc etc etc etc)
But lets start at 2-3 percent end it on a nice idle at 8-10 percent. (16)
And go to max 30-40 percent (here it means every few minutes something syncing, everyting ON and nothing in sleepy mode even when idle)
thanks for your input guys. i'm not sure if we can use the stock roms on our vibrants. i'm pretty sure the kernels you are referring to won't work on our phones though
i think i'll stick with darky for now and do some more exploring later on.

If XXJVK had been a flop, it may not have been a big deal to me as I am very much happy with stock JPY. But since XXJVK is nothing less than awesome, great battery life, eye-candy features, etc., yeah it became a very BIIIIG deal for me to have gingerbread to munch everyday.

Yep!!!
2.2.1 -> Gingerbread is like Win xp->Win 7 .
I hope that makes the point clear .
What matters is how well Samsung mess up the original code and make it suitable for SGS. And in the process
If they can fix the battery drain injected in froyo and change the filesystem from RFS to EXT (it is going to be a very big deal for all SGS owners)
It doesn't matter if Sammy removes all Gingerbread goodies (IMO), if all the security features of gingerbread is there in the ROM then GINGERBREAD is really a great deal for me
Gingerbread is not big deal for me but milestone for phone is it important yes all updates are as they depict the future so no more updates no.more phone.

it is..
this ROM is super fast and super smooth.. memory management is better..
battery life is still mystery to me..
if the stock ROM is this good,, imagine what Devs like Darky can do to this ROM..
yes the biggest deal for me cause of battery and speed. with all existing features.
Battery life has gotten so much longer with the Samsung Gingerbread beta. That's essential to me...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
its definetly the best rom and because gingerbread has so many things under the hood it was for me very important, battery life and memory management as the previous poster said are just two of them .
I don't agree with what Darky can do about it , i would say more what hardcore, supercurio,.... so the kernel devs can do about it when the sources are avaible.

No. But anything higher than 2.2 is.
We are still on 2.2 official, and the performance is a disgrace.
Well I used to be perfectly happy with jpy and couldn't care less about gingerbread because I was thinking of getting the sgs2 when it comes out. But after trying out jvk I think I'll hang on to my sgs for a little longer.

+1 i must agree, i am eager to try it but im baffled by all the posts, il wait for some more features, like decent stable kernel and a range of themes other than deodexed stock versions.
Im thinking of trying out the Miui ROM its now stable and looks pretty awesome.
But as an answer to the thread... NO gingerbread isnt such a big deal for me. id say there are custom ROMs out there with plenty more features and support. so il wait a little longer before i try it.
It's good to be "up to date", but there in nothing really usefull in this update. Speed is the same (=not so nice w/o lagfix) as in 2.2.1, and so as everything else.

Hello everyone,
I've been a fellow follower of the forum since I got my Galaxy S about 4 months ago. It is an amazing phone.
I've tried CM7 at the beginning, MIUI and several ROMs (currently with Darkys 10.1) and I had always a problem.
With CM7/MIUI the problem is battery life and some incompatibilities like codecs, playing flv files and so on. I am really having problems to know the current state of CM7 cores, mostly about if the battery life is comparable with stock rom.
I really want to try something that is still evolving but stable, that when I want to upgrade I don't have to wipe everything, and that I don't need to spend days to have everything working.
My main concern is battery life when using 3G, now it is simple not enough and the quantity of applications that can be run in background. For GPS I use GPS AIDS and seems to work fine.
So I really want to stick to only one ROM (Darky for me is too slow for updates and I have some issues with it)
EDIT: I am currently testing CM
Thanks!
if you want speed choose MIUI / CM7
If you want battery life Choose something similar to stock
if you want both ............ Tough sh!t lol

I used CM7 once, but what is so special about it? I only saw speed y the selectable themes. Then I had compatibility and codec issues, also needed to find some driver for the pc to use usb tethering.
I installed juwe over JVH with Darkys but I am getting FC with EDT app and reboots in the browser.... any ideas? Something wrong? I installed it via CMW with Wipe Version.
Also for Tethering you need to copy some script from one folder to another... why the Semaphore Kernel doesn't come with that predefined?
I may try SURFACE as for CM I need to mess with Odin.

As I am sure you have realized by now, the reason threads like this very little usefulness is that they almost immediately become Fanboi Fiestas. Each respondent will tell you that their favorite ROM will solve all of your problems and wash your car at the same time.
In the end, the only proper judge of which ROM is best for you will be YOU. You simply need to select a handful of ROMs that seem good to you, and test them out. No advice, no fanboi screed, no feature list can do that job for you.
Reading your posts, I can possibly give you some ideas of what to look for in very broad strokes.
First of all, the battery problem in CM7 is pretty much corrected by recent development. Most users now get about the same battery life as they would on the average Samsung ROM. However, I would NOT suggest you install CM7. If as you say you want to install a single ROM and then be done with it, then CM7 is certainly not for you as updates come every day or two. They don;t NEED to all be installed, but most users do. CM7 is the ROM for those who like to tweak and tune their phones and rewards people who like to experiment and really dig into the nuts and bolts of the OS. Since you say that when you installed CM7 for a little while months ago all you noticed was that it was faster and had lots of pretty themes, and you claim not to have time to even read a thread to learn about a ROM, then CM7 is ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR YOU.
Insanity and MUIU are both ROMs based on CM7 the same way the Samsung ROMs are based on the Samsung android version. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Insanity is closer to CM7 in look and feel, while MUIU is closed source and by default very much like iOS. Each one has devoted fans, so feel free to try them.
The endless numbers of Samsung ROMs are mainly themed versions of the basic Samsung code, with some kernel tweaks thrown in. You are usually best off choosing the one you like the looks of best, if you choose to go in that direction. Samsung ROM fanbois and devs will usually tell you their ROM is incredibly fast and feature packed, and so much better than anyone else's ROM. Whether that is true or not, take all such claims with a grain of salt.
Go out, download 5 or so roms, read their install instructions carefully, familiarize yourself with ODIN and the three button recovery method...and start exploring.
Good luck.

These kind of threads are pointless, like was mentioned earlier, each to his own ROM, some that work for some may not work for others, it does`nt make a ROM bad/unstable blah blah, only one way to judge a ROM, try it out then decide, no need for all this prick measuring...just my €1:74..
Ok thr best rom for you is jetpack, its pretty stable and has all features you are looking for with excellent battery life its very easy to install as the developer of that rom has made a simple yo use app. That takes care of all of the simple steps like wipe/no wipe, which kernel, which theme (two themes - basic stock theme or blue cm7 theme) and which modem! Jetpack's latest version which is v3.1 has some problems with tw4 so i advice you to not install v3.1 and wait for v3. 2 which will be there in 1-2 days as said by the developer!

I dont know of a way to check bootloader version. Some of the super developers around here might, but I don't.
Asking what would be a good rom to use is like asking a guy across the world what kind of ice cream you should buy. The only way to know for sure is to try them all.
Basic info on roms. Most I9000 ports have more tweaks and are higher in the dev (source drops for them before I897's) They also have better upload speeds on mobile network. I897 have Audience chip support. Any else past that would be my own opinion on both types.

Anything gingerbread based is going to have worse battery life than a Froyo based rom. This is because the source code is available for Froyo allowing for some system processes to be turned off. These processes continuously run in Gingerbread eating up battery. If I were you, I would try out Andromeda3. Its an I-9000 based rom with great support if you run into any problems. Not to mention a BLN control kernel with voodoo lagfix.
If you need good battery life, I would stay with an i9000 or I897 based rom. They are super stable for daily use.

Im having ALOT better battery on GB than what I ever had on Froyo roms.... Just saying.

Hi,
I'm sure there are a few threads about this subject in general(!) but I'll create this anyway!
Im currently on ICS Slim 3.7 (or 3.6? Whatever) + Semaphore. I am pretty happy especially because it is one of my first custom roms without any rnd reboots or stuff like that. But idk .. i'm not sure it fits my likings 100%.
I just want a smooth Rom without any lags when I use apps like: Facebook, Email, Reddit, Browser, News App .. that is pretty much all I need.
Would a GB Rom be the better choise? I used Darky before and was pretty happy (especially about the design) except for some random reboots .. what GB Rom would you suggest if you would?
Thanks, rest0ck

I can confirm this, ICS333 is quite amazing, very stable and very good battery life however, Facebook sync does not work, which is a Facebook-related problem and (afaik) apparent in every ICS ROM. But the App itself works fine so, if you do not need FB sync, you should definitely try this one!
[Edit:] If you want to stay with GB, perhaps Stock Roms would suffice, especially regarding stability... I'd suggest JVT with midnight or semaphore kernel (the JVT specific ones, of course) or the newest JW5 with semaphore kernel

Now a lot of people will say ICS is great for them, and i was very keen to grab ICS on my phone at one point. However careful consideration has made me decide otherwise, for the time being anyway.
GB roms, especially ones which are latest builds featuring tweaks and other such performance improvements, tend to perform better in real world use than ICS roms. Perhaps it is due to all SGS ICS roms being ports. Perhaps its a technical thing. I don't know but what i do know is that GB can have better battery life, smoother performance and the ability to play any game with oomph if need be and run any app like a charm.
And there are still functionality bugs i hear of in ICS that i dont have to worry about in GB, and a fix is probably coming, but the bugs arent there on ICS.
Now im not saying ICS can't do this, hey perhaps some roms for some people can do that, but the few benefits ICS brings dont really entice me enough when i have a fast and stable rom on GB.
If you are looking for a fast stable GB rom, I'd suggest Gamerzrom, the dev works wonders and my battery life is great and i can run pretty much any app with aplomb. And with his insane amount of free ram, i have no worries with the few RAM-persistent apps i choose to run

Yes, you can! especially on JVT, there are many "skins", for instance one which makes it look like DarkyRom which itself looks like simple AOSP Gingerbread... do not have a link right now, just search for "JVT AOSP theme" or something like that, I found one once... You might also try UOT kitchen (http://uot.dakra.lt/)... here you can "cook" your own theme
But DarkyRom is in my opinion still a good choice... I would suggest 10.2.2, it is rocksolid
[Edit:] Anyway, you should _always_ perform a full wipe (wipe/cache/dalvik)... If you do not, you may encounter problems
Heard a lot about Gamerz Rom - maybe I'll try it if I find a nice theme (used theme is pretty ugly imo). Darky 10.2.2 is good? What about the newest version 10.4.2?
Elite 1.2 is a very good ics rom worth checking out. Very fast and good battery life!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
I would recommend Dmore's 3.3 too. Good battery back up, no bugs and more importantly; essential ICS features are becoming available as add-ons to GB anyway. S voice, SGS3's Touch Wiz, Ringtone, Wallpaper and others.
Well I tried DarkyRom 10.4.2 cause I already had it on my hdd. And I have to say that I don't really like it. Is this charge-to-100%-bug still exisiting in newer GB Versions? I hate it .. and why can't I download all my apps? I had to download mysms through a browser (the .apk file) cause I wasn't able to install it in the play store?
And which Music Player can I choose to not turn on my display to change a song? (holding Volume Buttons in ICS does the trick). Now im missing ICS ^^ .. except for the look.
