Hi!
I'm trying various roms, and I see here and there some choppiness, notification bar doesn't come down smooth enough, scrolling is laggy sometimes, and realised it only does when the free memory it low. I'm running doc's latest ROM with hardcore(K13) kernel and androdena theme.
I don't use minfree manager, but I think all roms are optimised in this case.
Is there anything else I can do to avoid low memory? I have usually 162Mb free if I close everything, but I'm quite tired to all the time close the running apps in the app manager
You could install "Spare Parts" and set the "Activity/Process manager" to aggressive as a test.
I don't think it's memory that's causing your issues, it's more likely that some running processes use the cpu as well.
I think its not related to low memory, if there is not enough memory on android, then the system will close unused applications and free up some memory. And there is a rule on android - free memory is wasted memory.
hm.. I use androdena theme, and as I see the only thing not smooth is the custom notification screen. When the memory is low and you pull the noti bar down, it goes very laggy. Anyway, I tried setting spare parts to agressive, but it reloads apps in the drawer every time I open it. So i had to put it back to normal...

I was wondering what are people's take on widgets. For me it slows down my phone considerable to the point that it is unusable. All i had was the weather one, one that shows the time and date, battery and internal memory. Once i took all of them off the phone went back to normal. Is it just me or everyone else and aproximately how many widgets do you use?
It tends to slow down the phone a tad. I have a bunch of feed widgets, including weather and the retro clock and it seems to only slow for times when they are updating. Otherwise its barely noticeable.
A poorly written/buggy widget will do that, yes, but usually the developers are fairly quick at ironing theses things out. I had some issues with the Sky Weather widget and the Retro Clock one, but after a few updates they're both running without any noticable lag
I've noticed this too as well. I use to have a bunch of widgets, music, battery, weather, date, etc, but I've removed everything except for the sky weather widget.
I think part of the problem is that their taking up too much RAM which leaves less space for other apps to run which means a lot of swapping between ram and flash, which will definitely cause slowdowns.
I noticed that the htc magic has 288 megs of RAM vs 192 megs of RAM on the g1, so I guess google and the hardware makers are aware of this issue.

I only use retro clock and date, no lag since update for me. Not only do they slow performance but they also run in the backround and drain battery faster.
Currently I use two Picture Frame widgets, calender widget, weather widget, toggle bluetooth and toggle ringer widgets and sticky note widget. I cant really speak on the lag since I use setCPU and overclock 528mhz. There is no lag for me at all even with all the service apps I have running, tho every once in a while I experiencea lag returning to home screen. Not very often, about once or twice a day.
Yes. The widget slows down the phone a lot and I really couldn't stand the speed of it. Even clockibng it to 528mhz doesn't help...sigh
When u said u took off the widget. Do u mean took it off the home screen or do u mean uninstalling them?

If you have a class 6 SD card and want to run lots of widgets without any slowdown then download the swapper app on the market. This tool will utilize free space on your SDcard as ram. Be aware that this will decrease the lifetime of your sd card. I used it and my G1 is FLYING with tons of widgets on screen.
Ye definately the lag on the phone and when going to the home screen. When i say take them off i meant remaove them from the home screen. I dont know less battery plus lag because of the widgets is not a good thing at all. I am not sure if it is the OS's or the widget's fault.
I don't know about your mileage, but I just learned that (on my phone at least) the lag was being caused by having "Use Wireless Networks" for location services enabled. Disabling that, and my phone is snappy as it used to be. I had been seeing a lot of lag going back to my homescreen, now it is way better. I have the clock widget, calendar widget, music widget, search widget, and JS Weather widget running.
I had thought it was due to the dalivk-cache being moved to my ext2 partition, but moving it back internal did not correct the lag (it would take a long time - starting from a blank screen) to redraw the home screen). But once I disabled the "Use Wireless Networks", it has drastically improved. I am about to move the dalvik-cache back to my ext2.
Anyone know any good widgets that display the hardware's status?
Stuff like cpu temp, clock speed, ram usage, etc...
While I'm not entirely sure there's much in the way of physical sensors for us to read, I'm also interested in something like this.
Widgetsoid (lite) has a bunch of functions you can access through the widget to tell you system status. There isn't anything that tells you cpu temp or usage directly, but there are icons for free ram, system memory, and battery temperature amongst other things.
The ram monitor seems to be a good indicator of how bogged down (and slow) your system is running, and when it's a good time to kill some tasks.
Elixir also seems to have a lot of system info widgets available. CPU usage, battery temp and amp measurement, Ram usuage, available storage, etc. Its the best I've found so far.
Hi! I have an X8 and i'm trying different roms. But in all ROM i tested, the launcher often restarts. So, It can be very annoying. How can I turn off this?
Thank you! Please, help Me!
Sorry for My bad English. I'm from Hungary
I USE KUYADROID AT THAT MOMENT!
Which launcher are you using ?
Tick the option where it says "Keep/Lock Home In Memory" (You'll find it either in the options for the launcher or the options of the ROM you are using)
Your launcher re-starts because of Android's app killing mechanism whenever RAM is low. Also keeping the launcher locked in memory may cause instability.
To avoid this use some light RAM consuming launcher like launcherpro
When I'm Used launcherPro it also Re-startted. I'm Use Espier Launcher but it doesn't do that or I have not seen. I Used this from afternoon.
OMG !! Launcher Pro having memory problem ?? Unbelievable...
To fix this problem in launcherpro , Go to preferences > General Settings > Keep In Memory
Either you have installed too many apps or you use very heavy apps.
How much free storage memory do you have ?
About 50-100 mb
Then you must be using apps which require hell lot of memory.
For LauncherPro, you can try tweaking the Memory Usage Settings:
Advanced Settings >> Memory Usage Settings >> Memory usage preset >> Light/Low/Very Low
We all know that the ace has very limited RAM, which causes a lot of performance problems especially in jelly bean. I was getting around 50-60 MB on our CM10 jellaxy release with nearly no apps installed. Apart from using swap, I thought the next best solution was to limit background processes and I did notice that performance improved somewhat.
So I have 2 questions -
Do you guys think it improves performance or could it actually be detrimental to performance?
What about project butter? I tried searching the jellaxy thread and couldn't find out anything. I notice that the interface is smooth enough, but certain apps freeze or stop responding, probably due to the RAM problem. So is project butter integrated into our jb roms?
Thanks!
Offcourse, project butter is integrated into android source. If you want better performance, delete uselless apps that run in background and eat memory. Disable all transitions and animations in settings, enable KSM and disable surface dithering.

Thanks! How does disabling animations improve performance?
i think turning "off" the animation for the User Interface or in our desktop sure lessen the process of our ACE.,
BTW.,i dont know how to auto kill the google play store because everytime i turn off my phone to charge and then when done and turn it "on" again i look inside advanced task manager its always "on" process..
i would really appreciate any help..
It's been 3 weeks since the phone has launched, also the ram stays free upto 2gb; however, phone lags and stutters.
Go to dev. option, and lower the animations to 0.5 not 1.0. and you'll notice a difference.
Also get rid of Samsung and android bloatwares. you can choose to kill apps working in background more than two
Install a light launcher (I suggest Lawnchair) and finally reduce animations in advanced features.
