My buddy updated his phone to froyo thru kies can it still be rooted using update.zip file or does that only work if phone has 2.1. Also back before I flashed roms I used firefox sqlite to change settings file to allow non market apps and swapped it out using root explorer, can I do this on his phone the same way even though he updated it and does it have to be rooted to do this I don't remember its been so long, basically he wants to be able to side load apps without using side load wonder machine , last thing is there a free app similar to root explorer. Thanks

So the update.zip file I have on my phone won't work with 2.2 I'm assuming, I wanted to do it for him here at work without a pc, I did it that way for another friend but he had a 2.1 captivate, thanks

I used the ROM Manager app to update to 2.2froyo from a ere27 firmware with super user 2.0.3 and kept root access. I was wondering if anyone else had the same result?
I flashed the ROM Paul gave us and yes, it kept root access. So far all programs requiring root access have worked except for Titanium Backup which says it cannot find it.
just hit problems and download busybox then it will work.
Paul's rom had the added root access, you didn't really "keep" it.
Thanks for clearing that up...in the ROM Manager it was noted as Nexus One FRF50 Unrooted, Odexed. Which was why i was suprised to see the little ninja.
All instructions and links are for year 2009 and 2010. Thus with the new SDK and new version of HTC Hero, You cant use the adb methods.
There is no clear instructions.
I was able to root Evo using unrevoked this week with no issues... but Hero seems to be a nightmare..
I contanstly get 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command for all adb commands..
can someone explain how to root a Hero in Year 2011.
Go grab the universal androot apk from WWW.theunlockr.com and install it run it then download busy box from market and download rom manager use rom manager to flash your recovery then flash anything you want

It has nothing to do the year... what's your software version on the phone? Search the forums for the software version of your phone and I am sure, you will find a method to root it. Try the wiki, as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Hero_CDMA.png.
The recent release of android sdk, adb was moved to AndroidSDK's "platform-tools" folder.
I think the Hero is the simplest to root.
THanks
Thanks... I used z4root to root and then rom manager to install the CayanogenMod6
I cannot even get ROM Manager from the Android Market to show up. I get the license to show in the search, when I search the other apps from Clockwork Mod, from within the license, everything but ROM Manager shows up.
I even tried emailing the apk from another phone to my Hero & it says Cannot be installed on this phone.
What gives? I need to install Recovery.
I installed Recovery Flasher app, tried 3 different recoveries, and none of them worked, it goes to the triangle screen instead of recovery, having to battery pull.
When I tried updating the Firmware downloaded from HTCs website, it always came back as Error, pls make sure your cable is connected.
There has to be someway to obtain a Recovery on my Sprint Hero.
I used z4root also, when I tried downloading this & using this apk, said Cannot be installed on this phone.

UPDATE:
I just rebooted my laptop & rechecked my USB cable on both ends, reran the HTC Firmware updater tool & it actually worked. Now on 2.1, I was able to run that One Click Rooting app, and finally got the latest ROM Manager to install, and it said it flashed CWM Recovery.
I've upgraded to stock 2.2. I rooted with SuperOneClick and that worked fine. I wanted to install SGSTools so I downloaded it to my phone. I tried to install it using SuperManager but it came back and said what I expected, that my phone would not install apps that did not come from the market. So back to SuperOneClick to enable Non Market Apps. It fails. So, how can I do this?
I also tried to use the AIO Captivate Toolbox but that didn't work either. I could not find the apk on my phone anywhere and the app did not show up in my app tray. I had this on 2.1 as well.
Any advice would be appreciated. Mostly just trying to learn.
Did you try using super one click? There an option to add side loading with it.
Finally got the question answered. SuperOneClick finally worked. I rebootedd twice and was able to respond to the superuser request prompt. Successfully installed SGSTools using SuperManager.
Hey all,
A few months ago I had a friend flash my phone to the leaed/cracked/amazing version of Froyo before samsung released their current version
I am currently running I897UCJI6.
I have been happy with this build for quite some time as it allows me to tether my wifes iPad via the mobile AP while we are in the car driving etc.
I now want to root my phone so that I can remove some bloatware and get into the nerd **** and get rid of ATT bloatware.
I tired a few of the walkthroughs here, but I am getting the E:couldnot validate permission error that a few people posted.
I need some help/suggestions
Do I:
1 go back to stock using the Odin 1 touch - if I do this where can i get the build i currently have as it appears to have disappeared like a virgin on prom night (or my searching skills suck as bad as my spelling)
2.) beg and plead and pray that there is a way to root my phone in 2.2
dear god im a failure

I have the super user app, but titanium backup wont let me in says im not rooted... help?
open super user app. What does it show inside of it? The app is used to grant programs root privileges. If your attempt to root was successful you may have to grant titanium access to root privileges. Also titanium requires usb debugging to be enabled and , busybox to be installed. USB debug is located under setting/applications/development. You can get busybox from the market open app and install.
Side note though, why would you still be using a 4-5 month old lek when your phone has an official release? Just wondering
I accidently deleted a folder containing photos, I tried downloading DiskDigger, Undelete and Hexamob...all for root which I have. When I opened them they ask for root and I allow, then you are supposed to be able to choose which device you want, but there is nothing there. It says if there isn't anything there than you don't have root...but this seems to be a recurring problem after I updated my D4 using the OTA update, that even though I am rooted, a lot of the programs do not work anymore.
Does anybody know of a way I can attempt to recover those pictures I accidetly deleted??!

Did you use something like rootkeeper when you took the OTA? If not then the OTA to ICS probably caused you to lose root. You'll need to root your phone again.

I don't think you have root if most of your programs that required root in GB no longer work after you upgraded to ICS. You need to use OTA Rootkeepr to keep root after an upgrade. So your only choice now is to root and to run those programs to try to recover the photos.
I actually flashed back to orig non-root GB before I updated because I had changed too many things and OTA would fail. I used the droid for win tool and flashed GB system to my phone then went to settings system and got the OTA. After that I rooted. since then most root programs work like rom toolbox, titanium backup for root, root explorer etc. but some programs just don't work anymore, like Droidsheep or Wireless Tether, I believe they just aren't compatable with ICS...I know that a lot of people on google play are saying that after they did their ota wireless tether would not work anymore..everything works on it except it won't switch into AD-HOC mode , which is what I'm guessing changed in the OTA.
I tried using some recovery program for mac but it didn't work, right now I'm downloading riplinux and a couple other recovery distros. since the files were on my removable sd card I am just going to plug it in and try and recover from a computer....does any one have any methods that work best?
When you pull the files off your SD card let me know which program worked for ya... please and thank you
