I'm in the swype beta but it fails to work with the NC's screen resolution.
I saw a large thread with some file going around but I don't know what that's about.
Does Swype intend to give tablet-resolution support or is there a work, around? Again, I'm in the beta but cannot use it on my NC.
Thanks!

I'm almost positive it isn't possible to get Swype working on the NC.
Also, the screen's touch input skips a lot, which makes Swyping useless. I've tried using Ultra Keyboard multiple times and the tracing feature is almost completely unusable.
I have swype working just fine on CM7. i installed it on nightly 12 and its working ever since. You just need the apk and the .so. Some people have got it working w/o the .so but I needed it. no issues with swyping whatsoever. maybe because i use a screen protector but not sure.

Mine doesn't skip. Ultra Keyboard's tracing works pretty good for me, but not nearly as well as Swype on my phone. I'd try to get Swype on my NC, but don't want to give up the arrow keys.

Which files?
I downloaded the Swype installer but all I get is "unsupported device" when it tries to login.
So its just a matter of copying the actual two files using Root Explorer not using the auto-installation method? Right?
I backed up Swype.apk from my Nexus One using Appmonster (obtained from the official Swype beta, which I am legitimately a part of).
- I installed that apk on my NC.
- Moved com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk from /data/app => /system/app
- Changed the permissions like so:
x x
x
- Rebooted
And it FC's instantaneously, before even showing the keyboard at all.
I googled "Swype on gtablet" and got the libSwypeCore.so and put it in system/lib. (My N1 doesn't have the lib file.) It still FC's.
So I uninstalled my Swype from my Nexus One (from the official beta). However, now I'm trying to install the Swype.apk from the gtablet zip file, and it just says "Swype not installed". It won't install, even with my Swype uninstalled and deleted, and the libSwypeCore deleted as well.
What gives?
What am I doing wrong?

Nope, no screen protector yet.
Paint Joy also yields solid, unbroken lines when drawing on my NC, but I've seen reports of others that get broken, dashed lines on the screen.
Swype works great for me on CM7, v14. Someone here sent me the apk and i just installed via adb.
I've rooted my NC, and changed the build.prop fingerprint line to mirror that of a Galaxy tab. With doing that I could download the beta version of Swype, however once installed, it doesn't actually swype. I can tap the letters only. any ideas?

We've updated the Swype beta to include this screen resolution. If you want to use this on Stock, I believe you'll have to go through the other tricks documented for changing the keyboard. For custom ROMs like CM7, you shouldn't have any difficulties.

Just a hunch. Try clearing dalvik-cache in Recovery.
I got this official response over the Swype forums:

Even though I'm running CM7, it's not going to be able to license without an IMEI, which the Nook doesn't have. So.......that.

I guess they don't want to ever sell a copy to anyone using an NC, letting the pirates win again... if they ever end their beta and release the product. Hasn't it been in beta over a year, and still works pretty much exactly the same way it did last year?
I'm in beta and this is pissing me off. Is there a work around someone can teach me?

How do I install Swype beta on the Nexus One? I found http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12/30/how-to-get-swype-on-android/ but it's only for Droid. Doesn't work on the N1 because the screen resolution is wrong.
It still works,I use the Droid version on my N1 without an issue - it'll give the error message about the screen size but if you press the text field again it'll pop up and work fine.
it actually DOES work, just not in landscape. Just close the error message and go to input portrait mode again and it'll work. I just turned off auto orientation to always keep my phone in portrait mode to avoid any crashes while laying down and it switching to landscape. There is an .apk file out there that says they have patched it but to no avail =P
Swype is my keyboard while driving (1 handed operation) but I use Smart Keyboard (free on market) for regular landscape typing.
What am I doing wrong then? I installed it, then the same error comes up about the screen size. I click start and when I go to type, no keyboard comes up.
On second thought, I may have had a bad apk file. I downloaded the one in the first post and got it to work.
Looks like it works sometimes. The error message is bugging me, though. There's also no way to hide the keyboard sometimes, unlike the stick keyboard (which you can drag down to hide).
When using Swype and latest Cyanogen rom I cannot use camera. If I disable Swype, then the camera works fine.

Just wondering if anyone here has the ability to get rid of the warning message and landscape version?
It must be a relatively easy task for an experienced dev?

Anyone able to disable the error message? I am using the english n russian only version.
I'd prefer Swype, but other options exist...
I'd rooted my Kindle Fire and put Swype on there, and use it on my Evo (work phone) and on Incredible. So I'd prefer to have the same tool on all devices.
Two similar products that reportedly DO work with Nexus:
TouchPal Keyboard (free)
SlideIT ($5.99)
Both are in the Android Marketplace
Somewhere I think I've got the apk for ShapeWriter as well, and I used to like that one, so could be worth a test.
I'm not sure what the problem is here? I've been using Swype on my N1 for as long as I can remember, and have never had any problems?

No. Google "swype 2.4.44 hvga hacked"
You'll find the .apk file you need within the first few posts, I bet.
Good luck, soldier.
I found a copy of shapewriter that doesnt expire on their forum since my legit beta copy of swype isnt working on my 2.2 rom. It actually runs better than the 2.4 hacked version of swype that I found. It has a few differences between it and swype but I definitely like how much quicker it responds on my eris.

Is it safe to assume that these would require being rooted to work? I just did the google search, downloaded and installed...and it doesn't seem to have worked. I have swype in my settings, and I enabled it, but it does not seem to have impacted any of the e-mail or messaging apps that I have installed. I am on 2.1.
I figured it out. I needed to press down until prompted for the input method. Now its working, and I like it. It's maybe a little bit slower than me typing, but its significantly more accurate so in the end its also much faster. Muchas gracias.

Do you also have the DroidX multi-touch keyboard installed? For me, Swype and the DroidX keyboard are mutually exclusive. Having both installed at the same time makes my touch screen very unresponsive.

I think if you just avoid opening the multi-touch keyboard after reboot, it won't load its libraries into memory. I could be wrong though.
Why isn't Swype on the market? if its on the new phones why is it still in beta form?
Update (1/13):
Several people have gotten the Galaxy Tab Swype working on Nookie Froyo by changing their build.prop to spoof the Tab.
It still won't work on the stock B&N ROM.
This was posted from watzone69 for nookie installation:
"I got Swype working on Froyo Nookie thanks to wvcachi.
Go to tegratab and find the files you need. Edit the build.prop to change the device ID stuff (use the one in the OP as a guide, I copied most the top part). Push that back to /system/ and then push the apk to /system/app/ and the lib file to /system/lib/. Reboot and set it up in Settings > Language and keyboard the way you like it. Long press a text field, select input, pick swype and start swyping!"
Original Post (referring to stock ROM):
I got Swype completely working on my rooted Nook Color, but the changes made also make the system unusable.
It involves pushing the Galaxy Tab apk and lib file (which I can't post on xda) and then editing the build.prop file to make Swype think you're on a Galaxy Tab. Pushing the files alone will give you a pretty sweet (IMO) tap-only version of Swype, but the build.prop editing is what makes it actually swype.
This is a link to my working build.prop file if anyone wants to check it out (don't push my file, better to backup and edit yours if you want to try....actually, if you don't already know that, I'd recommend avoiding this for now).
Example build.prop: http://db.tt/S7gSsmH
Major system bugs:
when I put the NC to sleep, the screen turns black--but stays on. It usually then crashes and requires a hard reboot. So unfortunately, this is unusable right now.
Trace Keyboard Alternative:
SlideIT keyboard works, and I actually like it much better than I did the last time I tried it (their updates have really improved it in my opinion). Instructions on pg. 2 of thread.
Original Post:
Several of us have gotten as far as having the Galaxy Tab version as a tap-only keyboard (an excellent option in itself IMO).
I saw that some Viewsonic G-tab users were able to get full Swype functionality by pushing the Galaxy Tab swype.apk and libSwypeCore.so files, then editing the build.prop to make Swype think it's on a galaxy tab.

I think it has to do with the browser reporting it is Macintosh instead of Android. So I downloaded to the beta apk with the installer on my phone and then copied the downloaded apk to the Nook. But all I get is a white blank space where the keyboard should appear.
from the redditt discussion linked to this thread it seems that Swype validates devices installing the beta based on them having a valid IMEI or MEID. NC doesnt' have one obviously. I'm assuming that spoofing that would be very difficult. Too bad Swype won't release an installer that doesn't need a valid IMEI
Swype will only display on screens the same resolution as it was compiled for... your phone probably isnt swvga so thats why you cant see the keyboard...

Yeah - so unless Swype changes something to accomodate the NC, it looks like trying to get the Galaxy Tab version is our best bet. Plus it looks much better than a lower-res version of Swype would on our big screens.
I'm using it as a tap-only keyboard now, and I much prefer it to the Droid X keyboard on the NC: looks gorgeous with nice big buttons. To use it as tap-only, just track down the Tab's Swype files (Google: tegratab Swype Galaxy Tab), adb the libSwypeCore file to system/lib, then adb the apk (renamed to LatinIME.apk, after backing up your current keyboard) to system/app. ...all the mucking with the build.prop is to try to get the actual swyping to work.

I believe they indicated that B&N would have to ask them to support it, but I don't think they really understood that the request was for support of end-user rooted NCs, not stock ones.
So after more playing, it seems that setting the board in build.prop to anything other than zoom2 causes the system to crash on sleep mode. Swype only works if the board is set to match the Tab. So it looks like our best bets for getting Swype in here are a) Swype accomodates rooted NC's for the beta, b) a future custom ROM can spoof a Galaxy Tab without crashing, or c) someone in the "naughty forums" cracks open the Tab Swype apk to allow it to work on any WSVGA device.
. . . in the meantime, I've found that SlideIT keyboard has actually improved since I last tried it, and it works perfectly on the NC. Just purchase it, install (it won't work), copy the apk somewhere (it'll be in data/app/com.dasur.slideit.apk), then use the usual method of adb pushing it as system/app/LatinIME.apk. Reboot and it'll be your keyboard.

2 questions
Ffirst, I an new to android, especially moving around and installing files. Is there any way to do this using a file manager like astro?
Second, I assume this will replace the standard keyboard. How does one restore the standard keyboard if slideit is not satisfactory?
Thanks in advance.
never mind, I figured it out. root explorer works perfectly. astro doesn't seem to be able to copy and paste files. enabling the apk wasn't necessary, so backing up the multi-touch keyboard wasn't necessary either. copying to the sd card with root explorer worked though. to restore I copied the multi- touch .apk back to system/app then tapped on it and installed it, all with root explorer.

I'll have to try this. I went through the Market SLideIT installation and it seems to work as long as I have an internet connection. It wants to check it's licensing file. With the adhoc dropout on sleeping, this got to be a hassle. Does yours have this problem?
(I am SOOO missing Swype.)
A new beta version of Swype was released today that adds support for 1024 by 600 devices. I was able to download it and get it installed, but for some reason it keeps saying my license is invalid and tries to get me to generate the license again. I installed it several times and it keeps giving me the same error. Has anyone else run into this issue with the new version?
I'll download it tonight and give it a shot.
Would be nice to have a supported version of Swype for the NC.
How'd you manage to download the new beta? I used the Swype installer from the beta, but no dice on downloading that version
My guess is that Swype's "DRM" has the names of supported devices hard-coded into it. Which for 1024x600, that's just the 7" Galaxy Tab right now, right? Didn't that ship with Swype in the first place?
They'll probably never officially support the Nook until there's an open marketplace on the Device. Even then I wonder.
I am going to try hacking the apk on my Milestone this weekend to see if I can get it running on the Nook. I can imagine no keyboard more suited for the form-factor. The Gingerbread keyboard isn't bad in portrait mode typing with my thumbs, but swype would be so much better.
Swype-schmype swiping over such a large surface seems to defeat the point for me. Gingerbread is good for portrait as time pilot stated, but in landscape it sucks for thumbs. Only keyboard I've found so far and I dig is Thumb Keyboard. Splits/jars the keyboard and does make it really easy to type on.
My understanding of swype beta was that it checked your IMEI. Unfortunately the nook hasn't got a cell modem and therefor no IMEI (and no swype).
I would love to be wrong!
Ok, I'm wrong. Swype isntalls now! It runs and is enabled and i can tap type but swyping words doesn't seem to work. Any dieas?

I downloaded the Swype installer, installed it, and ran it. But it gives an error message that due to licensing issues, I can't install it on "additional devices".
How did you get it installed?
That is a known error. I'm not sure why I didn't get the additional devices bit. Did you download the latest installer? It was updated yesterday.
I think my swype is also restricted due to license issue. In the installer it says "ATTENTION! Swype is not properly licensed." and gives a procedure to fix it. This doesn't work though.

Yep, latest installer. Just downloaded this morning.
You could try the threads over at the swype beta forum regarding that error in the known bugs subforum. It seems that my work firewall is blocking that site ATM for some reason....... or I'd look :-\
It could very well be the IMEI generation routine in different ROMs. Report this problem on the Beta Forums and we'll see if someone can take a look at it.
i was able to download with the installer. but im getting constant fc's instead?
After several attempts and reboots I got it working BUT then it said that Swype was licensed for another device, but I just had done that.
So I think the problem is related to the IMEI since I saw on spectral souls description that the game wouldn't work on the nook color because every time it would generate a different IMEI number.
Any thoughts?

Because Swype apparently just added support for resolutions over WVGA, it always threw me errors on previous versions because of this.

I searched terms "swype" and "wsvga". It's quite discussed, really.
When I run the beta installer [Ver. 1.1.20186 (12.01)] I get "there was a data error, likely due to a bad network connection. please try again." I uninstalled the installer using TiBu and deleted the download cache and re-downloaded with the same error.

Typing in landscape is easier, since the keys are much bigger than the stock one this rom comes with.
having arrows on screen is a big plus
And it has lots of symbols you can use by long pressing.
Speaking of long pressing you can change the time it takes to long press in the settings.
Will try post some pics later

Known issues:
Long pressing on the settings key causes a FC.
Curious if thats the case with other roms

You have to move the Thumb Keyboard apk file from "data/app" to "system/app" via Root Explorer.
Then you reboot and go into your Market and longpress the search text box. You'll be prompted to choose your input method.
Im also testing the keyboard for the developer. So far so good. Always loved the paid version i bought.
I like the new layout though g tabbers will never get to enjoy the multi touch that it now supports (i think our hardware supports only 2 touch points).
Edit: Yes, long press on settings causes a force close on TNT Lite over here too. Reported to developer. I think its actually because he disabled the functionalities for other layouts.

Downloaded
Installed
Moved .apk to system/app
Nothing
Did the whole process again and it worked! Love it
I downloaded, installed, enabled in settings, and selected as the input method. So far it's working just fine. Haven't tested that extensively yet but for now it's pretty awesome.
What's the verdict on this so far? An improvement on the previous version?
Is voice recognition working?
Been using the paid version and it's great. However the voice to text doesn't work. Is that fixed in this version?
It doesn't? Think you need to activate it in settings. Works on my g tab.

Thanks for the help with getting the keyboards working. This is a nice keyboard.
Voice is working fine on my tablet.
I like this keyboard a bunch, hands down the best I've used on the tablet so far. I'll definitely be buying it when it comes out of Beta.
agree. Very very happy with it.

I have not checked the voice part yet, but spelling and auto correct works fine.
Both the market version (3.0.2) and this version are constantly FCing for me / not working at all under CM7 and I'm pulling my hair out trying to understand why.
The more I use this keyboard the more I like it. I keep noticing things that are just well thought out and useful, like the long-press for smilies on the left space bar and .com (and long-press for .net and others) button. Even common fractions on the center-right number pad. Very cool, very useful, and definitely a keeper. It's been rock solid and stable under VEGAn 5.1.1. I'll definitely be buying a copy when the full version is released.
Please give complete paths. There are several data directories on my system but none contain an apps folder. My system folder does though. I installed it and it shows but i can't enable it. Runs fine with just a standard install on vegan ginger.
