bootable ginger sd? - Nook Color General

Hello all,
just got m nook color and don't fully want to mod internal software quite yet and was looking for a bootable sd version of ginger bread like CM& and couldn't find one.
Found the one for honeycomb but not gingerbread.
Anyone know if there is even one for the sd bootable where don't touch internal software.
Thanks again.

Unfortunately at this time there is no SD bootable version of CM7. I am learning how all the stuff works and hope to make one soon but I have no time line for the project as I am not a developer and don't know if I will ultimately have time to make it. If I do get one do look for it in the dev board, but again, no promises and please do not bombard my PMs or the forums with 'when is it coming' messages.

Really, that would by nice. But the bootables have some speed issues.
I am constructing a dualboot rooted Eclair / CM7 gingerbread, based on multipliable thread posts and the work of the great devs here. Some seem to run this daily. I hope I can get it up and running too.

Speed issues aside alot of people, myself included, do not necessarily want to flash their MMC for a variety of reasons but still want to be able to run the neat stuff. I have my NC rooted and tons of stuff installed with no reboot issues and the like so that my main reason for trying to create a CM7 SD.

I'll second that. I also really like the fact I can boot into HC or NF without flashing my stock Nook.
On a side note I would think once CM7 gets to a more stable version that someone would probably do this.
or is there a way to make a bootablr img form a rom
I'm with Snyperx on his sidenote.
I'm betting someone will when the flurry of development has slowed down a bit.
I did read where one of the devs (can't remember who or where...I read too many threads here daily!!) said that if you had the correct partitions on the sd card and you pointed to them correctly you could make a bootable SD card just like we have seen from cicada before.
Give it some time and I'm sure it will pop up.
I'm looking forward to it also.
Ill add one more vote for a bootable card.. it would be great, especially since we just have nightly stuff right now...

Yeah, it would be a great treat, and also a step to multiply this army of CM7-For-NC of beta testers (or lab rats, as some prefer to call them... sure, who exactly listens to a lab rat when that rat whines about every next nightly is wonkier than the previous one?).
Whoever would be assembling an image for CM7 SD boot, I would also suggest to add latest Gapps/Market and possibly full Flash 10.1 (10.2 when available for Xoom), YouTubeTablet.apk, and dozen other apks from Xoom Honeycomb dump.
However, even if everyone was warned that no bugreports for nightlies are accepted, or desirable, I still wish to see a 2.6.32....37-based branches of CM7 nightlies to play with. Even silently, with no bug reports and such, like a lab rat, lol. It's not just me: I probably missed that notion of TI engineers being lazy idiots switching to 2.26.32 kernels even for their shot on FroYo. OMAP4 repos see 2.26.37 kernel these days for AOSP 2.3.2.
Apart from kernel maturity issues, I would love to see progress in engaging all sorts of NC hardwares: SGX full UI acceleration/font rendering/zooming, SGX/DSP HW decoding AND HW rendering (HW overlay) for video, full BT 1.2 functionality, FM radio, USB "hub" hack (to add (Web) cam, keyboard, hacked Kinect, whatnot)
CM Group may stay clean from commercial products, but I would love to see some less picky coders borrowing stuff from AOSP 3.0, Xoom, Nexus S, and whatnot and backporting it to NC CM7. By "stuff" I mean stuffy stuff, and not some fancy wallpapers.
While this thread is probably in the wrong forum, I have been asking for this same thing in other related threads. Squeaky wheel gets the grease?
Theres instructions in the dev thread (direct link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11472094&postcount=3 )
They're untested instructions. The author assumes they'll work but admits not knowing for sure. Regardless, I might have to figure out how to follow those instructions then. Might be the only way to get what I want. Everyone can do the same too.

Another chance. Indeed.
the main issue is currently they are at the nigtlies stage, so someone would need to manually create the img files every day, which is a bit of a pain for the small changes that are being made.
I can try to create one early next week when a few more commits have been written but I wont be able to make a new one every day.
I would like this as well but it seems that most people are content with flashing the Nook.
I might break down finally and just flash my nook but I need instructions on how to back up/recover my nook just in case something goes wrong or I want to return my nook to the store if I'm dissatisfied.
Can anyone point me in the right direction.
ill give a shot at making a bootable sd for the newest nightly tonight

I bet you can take the froyo sd card image, replace the uramdisk with this one, replace the system contents with the CM version and maybe be good to go. At the very least, this ramdisk is built from the dev instructions relating to making a CM7 bootable sd.
You will probably need to convert the partition where system lives to ext4.

HI,
A very quick summary to get you started:
The Nook color will boot first from a bootable external uSD card - so it can
be easier to 'try out' different ROMs without worrying about bricking the
device.
The internal flash memory is called 'emmc'.
You can root the stock ROMs, either the 1.01 or the 1.1 versions both are
based on Android 2.1, Eclair. You get Android market access this way and
can continue to use the stock Nook eBook app. There are rumors that
a version of Android 2.2, Froyo, with a B&N market is soon to be available.
Android 2.2, Froyo is available by ROM developers for installing on either
the internal memory or to run from external uSD cards. See for example
Nookie Froyo 6.8 in the developer section.
Android 2.3, GingerBread, is available as a pre-release from the
developers of CyanogenMOD ROMS, it is called CyanogenMOD7. They
release a new version almost every night, termed 'nightlies'. There is
a version for internal emmc or from someone else to run on uSD.
Current (3/23) versions have low frame rate hardware codec video
playback, but seem very stable otherwise. Phiremod makes a ROM
based on CM7.
Android 3.0, HoneyComb, has a very early release, based on
SDK version, not full source code.
To dual boot, see the thread in the developers section.
To overclock, see Dalingrin's kernels in the developer section.
To install new kernels and ROMs, see the ClockworkMOD (CWM) recovery thread
in the developer section.
Running a ROM from uSD can be as easy as downloading an image file,
on a PC, burning the image to uSD with "win32diskimager", then booting the
NC with the uSD inserted!
I am running CM7 nightlies and update when there are significant changes
or perhaps weekly - everything I have wanted to do has been working well.
Phiremod 5.1, based on CM7 is another good place to start.
As the NC has only one bottom button, you will also need some type
of on screen button system or button remapping to the volume buttons.
Most ROMs have something in them. I have liked Button Savior from the
market best.

Need some advice Nooksters.

So I bought my gf a nook. I am in a weird dilemma on what to install. She wants to do it on her own and finds the default OS on it boring. She needed a tablet. I installed Nookie Froyo which boots from the SD card. I think that may slow down the OS. So heres a quesition break down.
Whats the most reliable ROM? (I think FroYo will be a good OS choice)
What method should I use? Should I make her dual boot?
And anyone wanna warn me about some things?
Shes gonna be doing it all herself while I guide her. And I aint a newbie. Have an Archos 101 and I hang out in the Gen8 forums. Hi tho
Use CM7. It is the best rom out there by far.
If she doesn't like the stock rom then i wouldn't bother with a dual boot.

Someone else may be able to give you more information about the Froyo ROMs available for the nook color.. I personally don't have any experience with them so I can't really contrast the difference between it and the other AOSP ROMS available.
I've had the best experience with the CM7 Gingerbread Roms for the nook color. I'm currently running the 147 Nightly build and I've had no issues with it thus far.
The reason I decided on CM7 over the other available roms mainly stems from the community based around that rom for the nook color. They are actively putting out nightly builds with fixes every few days. As you can see by there nightly repo here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=encore CM7 is a very snappy rom with bluetooth support as well as usb device support in the works as well, I'd recommend you go with it.
As for method I personally just put it on the device itself. Running roms from a MicroSD card tends to be more of a hassle than its worth in my opinion. You've gotta make sure your MicroSD card has a high data rate or your system will be noticeably slowed down. The only time I'd recommend that is if you absolutely love the default nook interface. But from what you stated it seems like she doesn't even care for it.
I don't really have any warnings aside from following directions while rooting. Although if you've already rooted the stock rom via a MicroSD in CWR you can backup your stock, wipe cache/partition and install CM7 and gapps and be good to go. If you do go that route and install the rom to the nook itself make sure you update Rom Manager once your in CM7, you can then flash cwr to the nook so you don't have to have it on a MicroSD every time you want to update your rom.
CM7 it is. Thanks guys. Now I gotta make a step by step guide

Thank you all for the answers. I got CM7 installed on it =]
Give miui a try, I ran the cm7 nightlies for a couple months and all in its a great rom after you make a few tweaks most importantly to me the LCD density.
Once I saw that miui was released for the nook color I tried it out and don't think ill go back to cm7. Its actually based off the cm7 nightlies but the whole ui is modified and think its alot easier to use for someone that is familiar with android a whole lot.
I could go on but do yourself a favor and give it a try.

I have tried almost every ROM for the NC. I would go with CM7, or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947071, which has been just as stable for me. If you like the Honeycomb interface, use that.
+1 for CM7... fan-freakin-tastic. Use the "Size-Agnostic..." steps to install to an SD card. There's another sticky for installing to emmc (internal memory). The SD path is nice because you can take the card out and reboot to stock, but I found emmc way more stable personally, plus you don't have to worry about having a bad sd card, etc.
CM7 for sure. Real nice, fast, and stable.
I personally use cm7, but you might want to try miui for her.

Without dragging this out too much, what are the specific benefits of miui. Or better yet, what does it give you that you cannot get with the regular CM7 and some tweaks?

It's a different design, very iOS-esque.
Like I said, I myself prefer CM7, but since you're setting it up for her I figured she might like somthing that's a little simpler.

Does anyone know how I can Upgrade my rooted B&N OS 1.1.0 to 1.2.0 (Froyo)

Hi So I've been searching all around on how to do this but I'm having no luck. I know I know why don't I just turn my nook color into a full gingerbread?
Well here's the thing.... I like the Nook Color OS. What I'm running now is 1.1.0 It allows me access to the market and install market apps while still keeping my nook color OS.
But I could just install Nook Color app from the market.... I could but it doesn't work as well as the OS. I like my nook color for the E-book experience mostly. But I read magazine and not all magazine are availble in PDF.
Recently Zinio now is on Android but only in froyo 2.2 and up. I would like to just upgrade the market so I can take advantage of the market and installing amazon app market
I update once but it didn't work. It changed my screen resolution.
Please help

You're right, the links didn't work, but it has the thread numbers, or you could just do a search based on what he said they did.. anyways, here are the links he tried to post, but you have to read them and make sure you follow directions, because if you don't do it right, we aren't going to do the searches for you how to fix it. (Sorry if I sound jaded, but we all have to learn how to do it ourselves)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451&highlight=dalgrin+kernel
And in my opinion, I would do a few other things UNLESS you use the nook reader app on a daily basis..
This is a must
Start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520
I prefer the version that puts CWM on internal memory.
Dual boot the stock rom with a more functional rom(like cm7) if you want more features than 2.1, go for 2.3.4. It is much more of a jump than 2.1 to 2.2(froyo)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053780
or if you are willing to archive your stock nook color, copy it to a fully working sd card, and have nook stock on demand
[ADV][DEV][CWM]Copy Nook Stock to SDcard Image[5/9]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061523
Then you can install any rom you want on the main memory, but have a fully functioning bootable sd stock rom(which I did, and now it just sits on my coffee table)
or, if you are feeling really crazy, find the latest honeycomb rom.. but you can find the link yourself.

Hey thanks I'm really sorry to ask all these noob question. So I tried to upgrade to froyo once and it change the screen resolution. Like you could tell things were slightly bigger is that auto manualnooter?

Maybe, but I doubt it. It MAY have changed the lcd density setting slightly to make the market work better, but it would be barely noticeable. Seriously though, as someone who didn't want to give up the stock rom, get clockwork mod recovery on there, no a nandroid backup, and try cm7 if you want stability and lots of functionality, or miui, or maybe android 3.0.
Personally, the only thing the stock rom does well is read books, but once I found moon reader + I didn't need that anymore, and I can't think of a single other reason to keep the stock around anymore.

[Q] What's the best ROM to boot from SD on NC HD

I messed around with the ROM's on a Nook Color back in the days and stopped @ Gingerbread Bootable SD card and left the EMMC in tact. Been using it for a good while along with a TF 300T stock for a larger screen. I picked up a Nook HD on fle-bay and would like to get the most recent stable CM .. I'm guessing Android 4.3 is what's available....?
Can somebody point me to the best Install thread in development section to get this thing up and working quickly with.
* Bootable from SD card
* Android 4.3 or greater / stable
* Prefer CM, because I had a good experience with them on Gingerbread.
Once I get her up and running well, I can tinker a bit, but I really want a usable device pretty quick so I don't have to start over from square one and learn everything again from scratch searching through every thread .... just to figure out where to start.
Looking forward to getting a faster 7" tablet.. FINALLY!!!! I been using the Nook Color far too long
Thanks
Ok, here is my common answer for this kind of problem:
Please read through your device's forums and flash various ROMs in order to decide what ROM fits best for your needs.
PS: I don't even got my HD+, but I know that I will choose official CM - Stable from their website, so please read all threads and answer this question yourself please

I was really trying to aviod having to do that. I did all that 2 1/2 years ago with my Nook Color, it was tedious and time consuming process learning and where to start. Haven't touched that process it in about 2 years ... just used the tablet as is.
I just want the basic CM 10.x stable simple step by step thread - to create a SD BOOT card ( without the extra flavors and variation ) to have a working android tablet. I know I need to learn the install process again ... don't want to take hours of reading mega threads to pick flavor X, Y, Z trying out all flavors of ROM's. I've come to learn I'm more of an android user than hacker.

Thanks,
I've seen that, but it's for an install to EMMC. Since this a new device I have to decide if I'm keeping or selling if it doesn't fit my needs, I'd rather test run things on a SD card like I did with my nook color. I've already installed Win32DiskImager... I may be tinkering around with my Nook Color a bit to get familiar with the process again.
IIRC, the Nook Color is pretty unbrickable. Is the Nook HD similarly recoverable?
Also, Is there a similar thread to the " DUMMIES THREAD " but for SD ROM boot.
Thanks

that's the one I've been using since August.
I've not seen another pure SD setup.
There's a hybrid that uses internal for some file that's supposed to perform better, but I'm happy with the pure SD install.
I like being able to backup the whole card as an image and have everything to restore the full state.
