[Q] Can I use 3e Recovery Method to flash custom ROMS? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have a non-rooted Galaxy S running Froyo 2.2, Baseband version is I9000BOJP3, Build No is FROYO.BOJPB (note this is the official Froyo T-Mobile ROM)
I am able to use the '3 button recovery mode' however it is the 3e recovery mode rather better 2e version.
Can I still use the 3e recovery mode to flash a custom rom onto this phone, would I be able to go back & recover my phone in the event of something going wrong?
Thanks in advance

You need 2e to install unsigned zip files.

Well no idea about your ROM. So its on you . WARNING if something goes wrong I take no responsibility. READ IF ITS FOR YOU BEFORE YOU FLASH SOMETHING But you can flash a custom kernel.
I used Speedmod Kernel READ THE WARNINGS IN THE THREAD. To go back I backed up mine. If its only kernel you change should be easy to go back. But whole rom after you flash something custom not sure . Anyway this is how I did it.
1. Root is a must
2. Download SGS kernel flasher from Neldar
3. Backup your current kernel with the SGS kernel flasher (upload to email)
4. Optional Just in case backup your efs folder (SGS toolbox is nice for that) upload the back to your email
5. Flash the CWM version (with the SGS kernel flasher) you get on speedmod kernels thread.
6. Optional, now you can boot to the 2e recovery (Again SGS toolbox comes in handy with a shortcut and apply the goodies from speedmod or backup everything or flash what you wanted
the "upload to email" I added cuz there can always, even without this flashing go something wrong with your SD (internal or external) and is always good to have a backup. you can change email to PC etc

I completely agree with Pagot's instructions. SGS Kernel Flasher and SGS Toolbox give you all you need to swap kernels with confidence, then add CWM for Mods and you are now good to go.
I would suggest that if you don;t with to email the efs folder to yourself, upload it to Dropbox. I keep all vital backups for all of my devices there, so I can get to them at anytime, from any device.

[Q] Galaxy S 2.2 CWM Issue - Help!

Hey Guys,
I have an International I9000 Galaxy S.
The problem is that I have installed 2.2 Froyo through Kies, then rooted and attempted to install ClockWorkMod with ROM Manager. Whenever I flash and boot recovery, I'm taken to the 3e Recovery Menu, not the CWM Menu.
I can't understand why it refuses to boot :/
Please help a noob
Anyone? .
hi
ive never used rom manager so cant comment on that but why dont you go into dev forum and check out the roms there and on the OPosts theres directions that are easy to follow
most of the kernals have recovry built in
regards
http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-galaxys.zip
I'm not entirely sure, as I don't use Rom Manager either, but I believe that only flashes it so you're only able to access it using Rom Manager. Is there any option within Rom Manager that allows you to boot into CWM?
In my opinion your best bet would be to flash a kernel with integrated CWM, or ideally a whole new custom rom. Much easier.

Reason being is because 3e does not work with CWM. Only 2e is supported. Check the CFRoot thread, and if your rom falls into the firmware listed, you're in luck. Otherwise, like myself on Froyo JK4, I need to downgrade to 2.1 via Odin, then reboot into CWM.

You do not need to "downgrade" you just need to install a different kernel.
I recommend this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756

[Q] Recovery image.

Hi Guys.
Basically i have recently got a SGS and have rooted it using Z4 and also have the OCLF lag fix.
But what i really want to know is what the safest and easiest way to make a custom recovery image. Also if someone could explain breifly/simply exactly what it means for when i install a custom ROM.
I have seen this http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-a-rom-or-app-from-zip-file-to-android-device-from-recovery/, but then also saw somewhere on these forums that clockwork mod recovery ist too great or something to that effect, sorr i cannot find a link to it.
cheers in advance guys
Oliver
Bump, i did a search and couldnt find anything like i wanted to know.
can someone please help?
ta.
You can install Rom Manager and do a complete backup of your ROM including apps and all info.
All you need is Clockwork Recovery and Rom Manager. I have used it and it is very simple to use.
You can also use Nandroid, but I have never used it so I can't say anything about it.
Here is a small tutorial...
The phone needs to be rooted for this to work.
1) Any 2.2 non custom rom has 3e recovery , ClockworkMod only works with 2e recovery. You will have to flash a different Kernel with Odin to get it back. Check out this thread for info...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
2) Install ROM Manager
3) In Rom Manager, click on "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
4) Click on "Backup Current ROM"
5) Name the file anything you want.
6) Your phone will recoot into recovery and backup the ROM.
7) When finished, reboot the phone.
8) Transfer the backup to your computer for safe keeping.

thats great, just what i was after, thanks.

[Q] How to download clockworkmod and install while offline?

Hello.
ROM manager is unable to download clokworkmod recovery. Maybe because I'm in a "sanctioned country" CUBA and I have a lot of internet restrictions from both Google and my ISP.
My question is: Can I manually download clokworkmod recovery and copy it on the SD card and have ROM manager install it?
If the answer is yes: How? and where do I find Clockworkmod for the captivate?
i897 stock 2.1.1 rooted and unlocked.
Thanks.

all rom manager does is put this zip file on your sdcard. its not needed.
just drop this on the root of your sdcard, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice. CWM will come up then

the one caveat to this ... make sure you have the 2e boot loader when you boot into recovery. The 2e bootloader is the stock bootloader that comes with froyo. 3e will require you to have the update packages signed, and therefore will need to downgrade to 2e before you can switch to CWM.

Wrong.
2e RECOVERY comes from firmware 2.1, which the OP stated he was on. Froyo comes with 3e recovery. Has nothing to do with bootloader, because the bootloaders are the same between eclair and Froyo.

GREAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Working, one more question. I noticed three things:
1 - If I reboot to recovery again it goes into stock recovery (2e). Then I hit reinstall packages only once and ClockWorkMod comes up.
2 - If I delete the update.zip from the sd card CWM will not work.
3 - ROM Manager still says that CWM is not installed therefore is not working OK.
Is all this ok? Should I select: "Install sdcard:update.zip" while in CWM? Should I do something else?

That sounds pretty normal to me. If you are getting into CWM then thats all that really matters. The deal with ROM manager is that it doesnt work very well with our phones. But if you are trying to flash a custom ROM you can still do it without ROM Manager. However, you need to read up about the rom you want to flash because it is a slightly risky process. Its as risky as using ROM Manager and almost Russian roulette if you dont read.
But do not delete the update.zip after you install it. I dont know if it messes with the boot process of recovery mod but I do know its better to have that backup file on your SD card already if you run into a problem later on.
Don't bother with ROM manager. Its close to useless with SGS phones. Make sure your 3 botton combo works and you should be golden. Also making a jig isn't a bad idea also, just incase you do screw up and you get in a softbrick where your keycombos decide to not work.

[Q] How to do a Nandroid backup on a stock (but rooted) kernel?

Hi there
I am currently on a newly installed JVU that was pre-rooted by [Ramad], so I am actually on a stock kernel. I intend to keep it this way without any custom kernel or rom.
Now I would like to make a Nandroid backup of my phone but I can't do it with my default recovery menu that is without CWM.
Question is, is there any way for me to install CWM on top of the stock kernel so that I can do a backup from recovery? I do not wish to install a custom kernel just for access to CWM. Or is there an app that I can use to simply do a Nandroid backup without needing CWM at all?
PS: I tried using ROM Manager to do a Nandroid, but it would simply reboot my phone to recovery.
Anyone please?
It's my understanding that you need to flash a kernel that has CWM built into it.
CF-Root and Semaphore are the most common ones for this.
did you try the CWM Recovery App, couldn't remember where it is on xda but a search would help
Fairly new to all of this myself but I'm not really sure you need to do a Nandroid back up if you don't plan to run anything other than the stock ROM & kernel.
This type of backup is really for those installing custom roms & kernels etc.
It is my understanding that to run CWM you needed to be rooted (could be wrong). CF-Root is basically a rooted stock kernel so if you wish to do a Nandroid back flash CF-Root that way you can have CWM.
If you are rooted you can use Rom Manager to install CWM. Then boot into recovery (power button, volume up & home button) and do everything within CWM.
Hope that helps.

Hi
I do know the popular ones but I wish to remain at stock as I will be passing the phone to my mum soon.

Actually I am already rooted but I am on a stock kernel without CWM. As for Rom Manager, I have mentioned that it doesn't work. Seems like it requires a CWM enabled kernel for it to work.
I want to do a Nandroid backup now as I will be handing over my phone to my mum in afew months time. And I am pretty sure I'll make changes to the phone in the meantime. So I would like to have a Nandroid that I can restore to before I pass it over.
As for CF-root, I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Same problem here- rooted with stock, and won't go on installing a new ROM before being able to save nand backup...
I think the problem of ROM manager not installing recovery is related to stock recovery version that needs downgrading from 3e to 2e- I reckon to have seen some thread about it here.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery Mode HELP!

Can anyone help link me or teach me how to set up my phone to get into Clockwork Mod Recovery mode? whenever i try to reboot into Clockwork, it just boots into 3e recovery. I want to overclock my captivate but i cant unless i can get ClockworkMod Recovery to work
Try flashing a rom with CWM already baked into it.
And PLEASE DO NOT use ROM Manager. It doesn't work on the Captivate.

FFS... you are using rom manager.. it hasnt supported captivate since 2.1 eclair.
2.5 clockwork is nowhere near the latest. at version 5 now.
and when rom manager used to work, you boot into 3e recovery then select install update.zip TWICE. (every time)
THEN you will boot into CWM.
**but you arent on android 2.1 so it will error out. then you are going to create another thread for a question that has been answered a million times already.
why do you need clockwork to overclock your phone??? (you dont)
might want to learn what stickies are and go read them for a few days before you F%%% up your phone predominantly. read the new user guide while you are at it.

this is what i am trying to do. I just got into ClockworkMod Recovery somehow but now i cant get out. It keeps looping between the at&t screen and CWM
Any suggestions? or should i reflash the stock rom for 2.3
august 2010... do you think that works on gingerbread when it was released before froyo was released??
i told you to read before you **** up your phone. are we going to listen now?

flash this kernel .tar with odin
or in CWM (now) go to Mounts and Storage > Mount USB > (plug phone into PC)
copy over the .zip kernel from the thread, then unmount > back > flash zip from sdcard > choose corn kernel.zip
In odin, do i flash as PDA, Bootloader, etc?
im a bit new to this, so i dont no all these fancy pancy stuff

if you are flashing a kernel then it will go in PDA section but if you are flashing stock 2.3 fw then all the files will go to their respective places
Should I use this link for Captivate with 2.3.4?
Hi,
You told a guy who was trying to get clockwordmod recovery on his captivate, to use this:
[KERNEL][KK4][1/28/11] Corn Kernel v7.06 from Source (OC, BLN, Voodoo Sound, etc.)
Should I also take that advice? I want to put AOKP on the phone, but I have to get clockwork on there first and the normal way doesn't work because of the 3e recovery unsigned business. Thank you much for your expertise and for being a great help to everybody.
