May be setting up website - Off-topic

Hey, I would like to know how many developers for the roms/kernels would use this if I were to set it up.
I'm currently setting up an android website that would list latest news and all that, and if developers would like I can give free mirror hosting for their roms/kernels, no ads, no wait time, no registration crap, I'm personally tired of going megaupload/freeupload etc and waiting 60 seconds or having to find the "real download link" which is why I am setting this up and asking how many would use it?, completely free, the developers would just need to email me the file or I may setup a special username for them to gain access to upload to the mirror page.
I would make it so each device has their own page, but all the roms/kernels are on one page seperated by the developer who did it, so you don't have to search through many topics etc..all on one page for each device.

Great Idea Ill pass it around to let them know

This is great. Yes. You should. I'm coming out with a HTC Sense rom for Samsung GT-I9000 Captivate called CommonSense. I'd love some mirrors.

wow!! Okay So literally A YEAR later LOL! (Sorry been busy with work and school)
I can say I will probably be launching my site in the next week or two! I really hope some developers will enjoy free mirrors etc Minimal ads (Just a couple google ads) and none of this "Wait 5 seconds to download" crap!
SO Who's ready for SOME MIRRORS?

The reason sites do the wait five seconds thing is to allow more time for users to view and possibly click ads, thus increasing revenue. If you are seriously trying to undertake an arduous thing like this, you may want to reevaluate this stance. Server costs for the bandwidth and storage are going to be astronomical if you plan to offer this to anyone on XDA provided it takes off.

Minus is the best free hosting IMO, no wait, fast dl.

I was thinking of new firmwares and torrent.

Setting up a Torrent (tracker) (openbittorrent?) for new firmwares? Would it be used?
That's a good idea !
Enough of this *upload crap ^^
No point really. The roms are small enough to host on file servers, and they come quite frequently too.

True, but torrents allow for a way faster method of distribution.
+1 for torrent distribution.
i too prefer torrent over fileshare / rapidshare and all the partners and look alikes
torrent is click and go, then you can forget about it.
but all those sharing sites are a pain in the you know where, it's a massive waste of time waiting for those sites and the endless hoops it forces you to click through before it lets you download, and assuming they are not hiding the link elsewhere in another tiny micro text, or some button lost in the massive swarm of spam hugemongeous banners totally ofuscading it.
worse are those times when you downloaded other stuff for other project from those sites, and says you already ran out of the max alloted download for the day, and have to wait like 6 hours before you can try again....
Sure go ahead. As long as someone with decent bandwidth is seeding it, it should be good.

not some one with decent bandwidth, the idea of torrents is to leave it always on, so that many many many people can use as little bandwidth as possible to create a full fast download stream.

I mean the initial seeding, but of course if several people have the file from some other source...
Meh. I actually have a rapidshare account so I can download quite quickly from there
If not that, then I would prefer usenet.
Torrents dont regularly fill my 150mbits ...

[APP]MJ's Strain Guide Free[V1.7]

Hello everyone on this forum,
I have been working on continued development of my app MJ's Strain Guide which can be found from this Thread. I have taken the idea that was being developed on WM6.5 and brought it to WP7 after seeing no one has made an app for us medical patients. I have programed so far over 340 different strains ranging from Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid. This app tries to focus on the patient as a grower and a smoker to help a patient locate a strain that will best address their symptoms with the proper properties. This app does not promote nor condone smoking illegally and/or commercial growing. This app is an educational tool for the patient who is seeking more knowledge on what they are putting into their body and what relief will come.
Here is a preview of the app running:
Updated Video!!!!
This video is of the premium version but on the free version there are ads displayed at the bottom. They both contain the same amount of strains.
MJ's Strain Guide Free:
Deep Link to MJ's Strain Guide Free.
***history***
Version 1.7 - Added a new item into the app. The new item is called Cannabis THC Info. This section gives information on what THC is and an explanation of why I wont include THC levels as there is now way to accurately determine an amount of THC in a strain as it is mainly related to the growers skill level itself.
Version 1.6 - added several more strains. this is a mini update but the app is now available to every WP7 Marketplace around the world!
App Version: 1.5.0.5 - initial release
The app is released in many different WP7 markets!
I hope you all enjoy!!!
now thats a fine app!!! when are u planing to release it and is it going to be on the marketplace?
Thank you. I have already updated it to be mango ready as well as added more as in interaction. Instead of a visual showing a selection now there is hepatic feedback. I also fix a few typos as well as made the main page a pivot control so it's not cluttered with links on the bottom. The new pivot page is an about page which contains the links now for strain suggestion. Tomorrow will be day five of submission. Its so close to passing once its approved I will push this update. It should pass as I ran it though the market submission tool and it passed everything as far as I know. Full boot time was 3 - 3.3 seconds. In the current release I am currently waiting for publishing has set up in the @Support link a pre setup email template the makes it easy for me to know what u want to see. I might make the template more complex. I will add a support email link as well in the new version.
Edit: super tired have some typos in this post. I will post the link asap once it is approved.
Edit 2: i have attached some screenshots of the updated version. I really want to get this update out as it has much more in it compared to the the one currently. i have not added any more info just functionality and made things look a little nicer.
Is it going to a paid app or a free one?
Its a free app. Here is a paid version but there is nothing different between the apps. They are exact clones of each other just the free one has a ad bar at the bottom but it not really distracting from the app plus there no way of accidentally hitting one. I have spent several hundred hours building this app but have learned a lot in the process but broke as hell so i have ads, sorry. I will also give the same feedback response time for both as in feedback or suggestions. I will be at times a few days slower to update the free one depending on my time restraints. I am also currently in the process of making a MJ cookbook app as well. I'm just getting my recipes organized. It will go through how to make butter and other cooking ingredients which requires marijuana. This will be good for those who don't smoke or can't. I am also working with a diabetics person to design some recipes for those patients. Must have love for everyone.
Update:
I am still waiting on Microsoft to accept my app. its been 9 days now. I have in that time done more work on the app and have added more strains to the list as well as change the home screen UI a little bit. i also improved speed on the app as well as improved the animation on the home page. The emails you would send on suggestions or support has been updated to a @cannapps.com email address instead of the current email. this will allow me to be quicker on contact. I am ready to push this update ASAP so once i get word i will push it through. Im hoping to hear from them tomorrow
Well after a month of waiting and fixing one minor thing just related to theme (as in white theme, black theme) The app has been approved. It is now live in the marketplace. Check the first post for the link
Just wanted to post an update for everyone. I am planning on updating the app with new strain and some new features in the next two weeks after my move is complete. Also a cookbook app is in the works as well.

i'll stay tuned ;D
just an update. i should have it up for submission by the beginning of the week as i am now finally moved. I am now adding more strains for this update. I will try to hit every marketplace this time around if allowed.

I have already started the initial work on the cookbook. It will take me a couple of weeks to complete.

Just a quick update... I have submitted a mini update to the app that adds a couple more strains to the list that I was able to confirm more stats on. Takes a while on each strain as I strive for accuracy. This update also should be available globally upon Microsoft approval. The next update should have a search feature as I am learning how to implement it and maybe a save image feature.
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
update is now live. if you cannot find it yet give it a day as sometimes Microsoft is slow to update there marketplace but full approval went through for the update. This will now allow the app on all markets. updated first post.
I am planning another update soon which will add more strains as well as the ability to take notes on a strain your growing within the strain details page. That will come once MJ's CookBook is complete which its looking good so far. More updates soon

New update has been submitted to the Marketplace. It should be available in the next few days. Version 1.7.0.0

[Thoughts] Where you upload *

Well lately I've been posting actually. But I've been noticing one thing. Where you upload your rom / * files. They suck. Or let me describe:
"Hi pay us $80 to get this at 0.0002 mb/s and not corrupt or don't use are site!
*hidden under all this garbage a actual slow download link*
"
Yea. Please just stop uploading to those sites. There must be a better way! We love your roms but we HATE waiting up to a hour to get them. And sometimes they a horrible. So we waste about 2 hours with a horrible rom thanks to you. a site. and more!. So please xda if possible, find a better site. Even use DROP BOX. Let us keep are SANITY. Or xda, have your own file hosting site just for rom chefs!
- iToast
Dropbox keep suspending my Wallpaper collection links. Too much public traffic
Google Docs is a nifty alternative. No wait time and full speed download. I use it but i'm not sure everyone even knows they can.

Wow! That's a VERY generous offer! You do realise it'll cost you a fortune to pay for xda's hosting, as it will require a massive amount of space and bandwidth.
You are a VERY generous man

ihazroms!!!

I am disappointed in the recent megaupload downfall.. The stuff XDA had links to were roms for our devices which certainly wasn't illegal to host. Anyway, I can't do much, but I have a web server sitting in a server room at no charge to me. I have a few roms I downloaded, and I wanted to make a basic site. I would like to add more to this, so.. help me get some more stuff on this site.. Also, I am open to suggestions on improvement and any assistance one may be able to provide. I understand there are other free providers like megaupload, but they are riddled with copyrighted material as well which may kill them too, so hopefully I can do a little here to attempt to make a difference (or until my boss yells at me about maxing out the bandwidth supporting a community from a single server on a 10Mb pipe..).
Right now there is only Atrix and Optimus V stuff on it, I just half-assed it together at work.. and am pretty busy.. so I will post as much as I can when I can..
Hmm, a 10Mbit pipe.. Guess that will be not enough to host Rom's for a popular site as XDA is. If only 100 people will download at the same time, the speed will only be 12,5 KB/s
Nevertheless it is a good thing that you want to support the community!
I would tend to think it wouldn't take long for the 10MB pipe to be completely saturated with the amount of people that are on xda.
I agree but at least someone can get some good use out of it.. I expected significant traffic once there was a better list of software on it..
I'm thinking 20 seconds... But they are available for those who need it.. I would love to lease from akamai or something of the likes.. But I have enough trouble paying bills as it is!

Megaupload

A lot of ROMs/Mods/Files were hosted on Megaupload and none of the links are working now because of the government shut down the site I am LOST without my ROMs and Mods I guess that means that all developers have to upload the files to some other site then?
I lost my files too. I hope it will come back soon
Your powers of deduction have filled me with wonderment and awe.

Megaupload...
Yeah, this really sucks. I don't even get why they closed the place anyway. I mean yes it may have had a lot of "bad" files there, but it's not like it was MegaUpload who put it there...it was the users. Also, they are trying to filter out the copyrighted stuff. So it's not like they're not doing their job. *sigh* I hope it comes back. It was one of the best sites to download from since I got great speeds.
I didn't even think of the impact that taking down megaupload would have on Android ROMs... Hopefully most of you have backups :S
Damn in Megaupload allways the developers upload roms and another things...
this is bullcrap this is another way the government is trying to dictate us and control what the internet does
At least on my device, devs are used to upload on MultiUpload, from what I see.

Limewire was taken down in much of the same way, it was an OBVIOUS hotbed for piracy, i don't think they government should of had the ability to remove it but when they got rid of limewire, you had to know this would be coming at some point. There were legitimate uses for Megaupload but a lot/most of it consisted of people sharing pirated data
Yeah but Limewire was just for piracy and Megaupload wasnt, they had a lot of stuff on there that wasnt. They should have the power to do this, I think this is their response to the other day where a lot of website shut down, including this one, to try ot get the bill from passing. I think its all bull, WE are the people not them, WE are the majority and the majority rules.
My guess for the both of these sites fell under the SOPA rules that are trying to implemented before anything was signed into law. You can still go to megaupload and it will state the reasons that they were shut down. One of them being piracy act. Remember for those in the USA to vote this current administration out of office before all of our rights are taken away
SOPA=NWIH (no way in he!!)
This just another example of a tyrannical government shoving their noses just a little deeper where it doesn't belong. The internet is the only thing that still works in this country, and they just want to control it. I say vote em out, all of them. !Ron Paul 2012!
Devs have to upload them in other file upload sites.
the best idia to write to megauload to tell user acess to download personal file
and then move to anader upload
it posible connecting with proxcy usa ?
never mind
The way Apple sees it, any rom on there with a 'slide to unlock' is copy written material being pirated.
