[Q] Help with eBooks - Nook Color General

I don't know if this a nook problem or a CM7 problem but I can't get google eReader app or the amazon Kindle app to verify/sign-in. Has anyone had any luck or trouble buying ebooks with either of these apps?

I haven't purchased any book from the Nook. However, I'm running Froyo 0.6.8 and I've got access to all of the Kindle and Google books that I have purchased.

anyone using nook color with kindle app

considering nc, waiting on ces to see what is released in 7" formats...
looking for a ebook reader first, tablet second. have a mot droid, so was figuring android reader might be better than kindle.
Was wondering if anyone is using the nc with the kindle app, and if so, how it compared to using the kindle itself?
Also, is there a sticky thread of how to simply root the nc? In my brief search I found a thread 136 pages long, I was hoping there would be a simple 5 or 10 step process thread? thanks.
Don't see why you'd want to use the kindle app but I dont see why it wouldn't work...
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting
There's also a sticky in the apps development section for nook color on this forum that has everything you need to know about rooting.
I'm using the Kindle app on my rooted NC. I'm doing so to avoid the possible reboot/reset issues when accessing the BN store from a rooted device.
However, I have never used a Kindle, so I can't compare the app to that device. The app is very fluid and readable, and I have no problems using it. I'm taking a long trip in a few weeks and will really get a chance to test it then.
The auto-nooter thread is long, but the process is nicely summarized in the first post. The one "gotcha" that tripped me up was in step 12 where you log in to YouTube. You *must* add "@gmail.com" at the end of your login id. Don't just use your base GMail or YouTube id (as I did), or you may have to repeat the whole process. The device will be rooted but Market won't work if you miss this key point (which is not in the first post, but it does show up farther down the thread).
So, don't be put off by the long thread. The thread got bloated somewhat with many of the same questions being asked & answered over & over.
I am using the Kindle app - don't know how it compares to a Kindle, 'cause I've never had one I used the Kindle app on my HD2 and Blackberry.
It seems comparable to the Nook app - read a book, turn pages, bookmark, press on a word to highlight or to look up, change font sizes, etc. etc.
As for rooting the Nook, just read the first post here. Follow directions. It's really a simple, step-by-step process.
The only snafu I had was trying to use winimage. Wouldn't work for me. Another kind soul pointed me to to the freeware version: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download. This is the one that finally worked.
Otherwise, there were no hiccups trying to root.
Read the instructions. Read them again. Follow each step explicity. Worked for me and plenty of others here.
I use it exclusively and love it. I also have a kindle II that I have used for the past year.
There is no comparison, the NC running Kindle is much better IMO. I am holding my final opinion until I see how the battery life works out with daily use. So far so good.

Works fine for free books added directly with .mobi files but I can't get it to open purchased books sent from my Amazon account and that I was reading on my iPad. They show up ok in the list but it says it can't open them and they need to be removed and redownloaded...that doesn't help. Not sure what's up with that?
I have the Kindle app installed and it does work but I can not access the Amazon store through it. No matter what I try, it always gives me an error page when attempting to access Amazon's purchase/download portal. Side-loaded books work fine though.

Looks as the same problem I am having then, did you try sending the book from the Amazon Kindle website too? Wonder if you can take the book form an iPad and sideload it? DRM might be a problem.

OK. this sounds like a big problem. This is what I want to use the NC for. I should be able to purchase kindle books, and I should be able to read them on my pc, my droid, and my NC, especially my NC. Are you saying that this won't work, that you can't purchase books and read them on the NC?
Using the Kindle App and it works fine
First to the question why use the Kindle app on the Nook Color (other than the undeniable pleasure of being able to say I use both on the same device)--well, lots of ebooks are available from Amazon that aren't available anywhere else. It's true that I was unable to purchase a book directly from Amazon on my nook, but I did so on my Android phone and then synced the nook to my Amazon account, and it downloaded flawlessly. (Now if I could only get the Kindle book onto my nook's homescreen. That would be a real ---- you to B&N!)

Contrary to drwohl's experience, I was unable to get the Kindle app on my NC to sync with my Amazon account. I always get an error when I fire it up that it was unable to sync. My login info is correct, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Side-note, the Kindle store and sync both work on my Epic 4g *shrug*
I've only been able to use the Kindle app to read side-loaded content so far.
I've rooted the NC and love it, and use the Kindle app exclusively. You can't buy the books directly using the Kindle Store, but you just need to use the browser and buy the book there and it'll download it! You need to go to the Kindle app and go to Archived Items and Sync and they'll be there. You can then long press on the book and move it to Downloaded Books. Works great!!! Lovin' it.

Yes haven't been able to send a book successfully to my NC from the Amazon Kindle website so far, get an "can't read book error, remove and download", tried that, it didn't help. Not sure why, possibly a DRM issue.

Ok. just to make sure i understand this before i drop $250, if I buy my book via the amazon website rather than the kindle app, it will work? Get the book say when I am on my computer. Then on NC, go into kindle app, look in archived items, and do a sync, then I can read on NC?
To test this, I just downloaded a sample from Amazon's site, using Opera Mobile on my NOOKcolor, and it was sent to the Kindle app on my nook with no problems. Though it was only a sample, I can't see it being any different with a purchased book.
I had previously synced books I had previously purchased onto the nook without any problems.
Has anyone tested this with Dolphin HD, xscope, or other browsers?
So it looks like we can still purchase/sync books all on the device - just use the browser.
Got it to work for sample books but not for purchased books, see error message above.

I just purchased a Kindle book on my nook using Opera Mobile, and am now reading it in the Kindle app ("A Kidnapped Santa Claus".... Because it was .95... Try if you want to test for cheap).
Those having problems, what browser are you using?

How do you disable them. I tried to disable using root manager and explorer but could only fine the option to delete them.

[Q] CM7 & Nook Kids Books

For those of you running CyanogenMod, do you still have the full B&N Reader experience? I'd love to run CM but my kids have books on the Nook Color. Not regular books but the nook kids books that only run on Nook Color and iPad.
unfortunately you have to stay on auto-nooter (rooted stock eclair rom) to keep the B&N stuff.
Right now the NOOKcolor app that comes with the stock OS and supports newspapers, magazines, and kids books does not work on anything but the stock OS. There is ongoing work to try to get it going under alternative ROMs. Subscribe to this thread for more info:

Unfortunately the best you can do right now is set up dual-boot between CM7 and stock.

Thank you for pointing that thread out to me. I absolutely will subscribe to it. That is exactly the kind of think I wanted to see. I very much appreciate it.
Let me make sure I get this right. Say you abandon B&N stock and run something like NookieFroyo or CM7 then download the B&N app from the market. The downloaded B&N app does not work on NF/CM7 ?!?!!
The Nook app works under CM7 but will not read magazines, newspapers, or books that self-read. This last one leaves out many good kids books.

The videos of CM7 I've seen on Youtube look fantastic, but if I can't read my Economist subscription, then it's a deal breaker.
I just rooted my NC last night with Autonooter and it's a real thrill to suddenly feel like I finally own my Nook Color (an un-rooted Nook feels more like Barnes and Noble is lending you the device). I'd love to go full throttle with something like CM7, but honestly, I primarily bought the NC as an eReader+ so I'm just happy to be able to play the occasional game of Angry Birds. Now, if Popcap will just get off their butts and release Plants v. Zombies for Android all will be awesome in my world.

[Q] phiremod-V5.1 and Magazines

I just installed phiremod v5.1 and it works great. However, I did not think about losing the ability to read B&N magazines. What is the next best root to give me access to the B&N magazine reader? Thanks
I think the ability to read magazines and kids books through the B&N software is only available with the rooted stock rom.
Yeah, that is what I assumed - Just trying to figure out if someone has figured out a way to put that on top of the android software. Thanks for the reply.
Am I the only one wanting to have the best of both worlds - B&N reader functions and a tablet?

[Q] Question root Nook HD

Hey everyone!!!
Great forum, so informative!! I think I've figured out how to root my new Nook HD. I do have a quick question though. I'm basically looking to root my Nook HD to be able to access my Kindle account and Amazon apps (I wanted a Kindle but I got the Nook as a gift).
Will the universal root work so that I can get Amazon apps & the Kindle reader? Also will that allow for videos from Amazon Prime as well?
Thanks
Maggie

Thanks!!!! I'll let you know what I find out about that, planning the root in the next couple of days!

To root or not? New Rom?

I bought a 32 Gb Nook HD+ in November 2013. I use it daily for reading either B&N ebooks or Kindle ebooks. No comic books or magazines.
First, being a good ereader is most important. For several years, I have had trouble with B&N ebooks freezing. Strangely, Kindle ebooks seldom freeze, but they do freeze on occasion. So I need both the B&N app and the Kindle app since I have purchased books from both. I have heard that once rooted the B&N ereader app and Netflix does not work. Or maybe it doesn't work with a new Rom?
Second, it is important to have a browser so I can get to specific travel/hotel websites while traveling. Currently, I can get to the websites, but can't read them because I can no longer zoom in for some reason. No point in going to a website if I can't zoom in to read it. Is it possible rooting will help this problem?
Third, I would like to be able to carry 1 tablet that can do everything I need...play movies from Netflix or Amazon Instant movies, my Plex account, or the digital copies that come with DVDs I have purchased. If I can use Plex, I don't need the digital copies. I think with stock HD+, I have to convert movies??? I guess I have to convert movies once rooted also. I can't get email on the HD+ because none of the apps have been updated by B&N, but I can use my phone for that. I also lost sound on the HD + and had to install an app to have sound.
Fourth, is there some reason I can't charge my HD+ on airplanes? Voltage issues? While reading, I plug it in to charge, and the screen starts jumping and flashing. I can't read when it is doing that. If I turn it off, it still will not charge. Is this a Nook problem, or do all tablets have trouble charging on airplanes? If it is all tablets, then rooting will not help.
Last, I am confused about rooting and a bootable Roms. I don't understand the differences between the two, and I don't know which would be best for me, or if I should keep stock. I have seen downloads for different things on this website, but don't know which to use, or even which version to use. Maybe none at all?
So, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Do I need to install Lollipop, KitKat, Nougat, or leave as is? The HD+ screen is wonderful and I really don't want to carry 2 tablets when I travel, so I would like to fix the HD+ if possible. Or is it time to buy a new Samsung tablet and leave the HD+ at home for reading only? Thanks to anyone who has time to explain!
By the way, my brother bought a new HD+ at Barnes & Noble last December, 2016. I can't believe they are still selling them!
