So I <3 my NC running Customized Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 from the EMMC (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938200), but the keyboard drives me a bit nuts, especially the landscape textbox in notepad apps! I have tried downloading replacements from the market, but even when I enable one, they don't replace the stock keyboard.
Anyone have any advice?
I got info on how to do it from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936539
I installed my replacement keyboard with help from this site:
...
Can't post links but if you google nook devs replace default keyboard I think you'll find it. Then just select the keyboard in Nook Color Tools.
Excellent, that let me change the keyboard, (specifically the terminal commands listed here: nookdevs dot com(slash)NookColor_Replace_the_Default_Keyboard). Thanks!
Now, anyone know how to get rid of the text box in landscape mode?
No terminal commands necessary! After installing alternative keyboard from market select it in the settings -> language & keyboard menu.
Then long-click on a text box and select Input Method.
Gingerbread Keyboard is the best one I've tried yet. I'm really hoping swype will open up their beta to non-phone devices soon though!
Aha! Thank you joshuajohn! that actually worked like a charm... and "Keyboard from android 2.3" by steven lin on the market got rid of the text box
Thanks all of you!

I recently discovered both and I'm not sure which one I like best. What does everyone else like?
I was the same way so I kept both. That way I can switch whenever I want to man. It's nice.
I have both, but my fallback is the T9 keyboard from HTC. Swype is a funky concept, but in the end, a qwerty keyboard is a qwerty keyboard to me. I don't need another one if I have a physical one already.
Swype.Its so fast to type.
Swype, because now I can easily text with one hand while driving.
HTC_IME is the best VK around.
Swype !!!
and the 1.16.12.5230.t version even better
Swype it is.having to tick every letter is just soo annoying.and if I choose to, I can still do this with swype. Plus its a thing ipod users envy
Swype is good enough that I would consider buying a phone without a physical keyboard.
when i have to type web addresses in, i go with the htc ime, othewise, swype all the way (on a MT3G)
i use swype to play with... honestly i'm faster with a qwerty keyboard (i use better keyboard) but swype really is something to behold.

tried the 1.16...... version?
its much better at the standard 'single tap' typing than the 0.5...
swype.
Most defintely swype beats the htc IME for me. It just so smooth and make sure you get the newer version! Honestly, its slower for me to open my keyboard anymore...Now i have actually decided to get the nexus because typing will be a breeze.
I just downloaded Swype, it is amazing. I can type much faster single handedly (don't drive and text!) than with HTC IME. It is much more forgiving, which considering my large fingers and the Dream's tiny screen, is absolutely great.

hmm, didn't even notice that
the version number in my sig is taken from the swype settings
may be they round it off
edit : oh, file shows as Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219 on mediafile
i switch between three input methods:
swype is my primary for email, sms and such when at work, home, or out and about. ...and to simply make iphone people drool.
android keyboard from nexus has taken over the roll that ime use to fill since it has speech to text so it serves as my input when in the car so i can respond to emails the same way i can with handcent sms...just talk to the phone and watch the words appear
when i end up needing to surf web for a while or input email addresses, i still find myself falling back to htc_ime.
I tried installing Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219.apk via ASTRO.. I already had the "version 1" installed, so it offered me to "upgrade".. and I went down that path until it said "Swype cannot be installed on this phone"
??
EDIT: I also tried Apps Installer, but that always FCs on me
EDIT2: I uninstalled previous version of Swype.. rebooted.. launched Apps Installer (no FC this time) and the new Swype installed.
love Swype.....
IMO better than HTC_IME, especially with different lang.
very accurate for me, even in Korean typing!!! Cool
I have tried every setting in Swype, but I keep getting a little pop up thing with symbols on it. I can't figure out how to get anything to type. I have gone through the instructions, but I guess I need to watch the tutorial.
Anyone know if there is a working replacement for the stock keyboard? I miss text prediction and spell check. Right off the bat I would imagine if we could somehow install a keyboard, there would have to be some trickery to enable the new input (as the settings menu is pretty sparse).
I'm just curious if anyone else is working on this yet...
Here is the guide to do it.. However, I was unable to get HTC_IME or Smart Keyboard Pro to work.
NC Keyboard
I tried Shapewriter, Ultra, Swype with and without the keyboard manager. None worked for me.
The only one that worked for me was BetterKeyboard (v7.3.0).
I'm sure that we'll have a better solution here or at NookDevs soon.
I'm using SwiftKe. It works pretty well. But you can't access the setup unless it's the first time or if you delete the SwiftKey directory in the sdcard. Also, in the setup you can't see some text, so it's better if you have a phone with. SwiftKey too to se
I have installed a Scandinavian keyboard, but since I can't get the keyboard choice screen to appear I can't use it. I do get the screen to appear when I click on a button after installation, but that only shows the standard Android keyboard. I think it's because I need a reboot after installation of the Scandinavian keyboard, but I can't be sure until I find a way to force this screen. On other Android units you can press and hold in a text box to get it or press and hold on the keyboard icon when the keyboard is visible, but none of those work here. I looked for an app to choose keyboard but couldn't find one. Any ideas?
If you have Twitter installed, I've found that you can long press on the text box for writing a new tweet, and get the input method popup.

This method works on the Nook Color?

Have you tried this app?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830177
It was made to allow the choice of different keyboards for different orientations, but it'll probably do what you want (kind of). Only negative is that it's an extra process that needs to run, but big deal.
sombody managed to doe in the general discussion by uninstalling the defualt keybord and replacing it with a different one or something...
here's a little app i wrote that allows you to switch soft keyboards

So at this point I am really happy with my rooted 1.2 nook. While I like the layout and feel of the stock keyboard, I am disappointed with the dictionary and autocorrect. About the only thing it does for me is capitalize the first word of a new sentance. So my question is, what do others here do to get a better keyboard experience? I have tried installing other keyboards on other ROMs before, but the dictionary performance has always been poor. I know there are a few more steps to put a keyboard on the NC rooted.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Swiftkey!!!!!
SlideIT...like the slightly crappier version of Swype.
The gingerbread keyboard.
I really don't understand slideit and swype. no way am i ever gonna "slide" faster with one finger than i can type with 2-10 fingers. Maybe on a 3" screen when there is only room to use one finger...
Swype.......
thumb keyboard is what use and am lovin it

How did you get Swift Key working on the rooted 1.2? I am unable to enable or choose it.
Thanks.

I patched this together from various sources... hope it helps!
First make sure it is installed correctly and selected
One way to do it is to use "Root Explorer" and go into the data/app folder find swift key....mount the folder as r/w (button on top of screen in Root Explorer) click on swiftkey and select "Move" then navigate to system/app and paste it in there. Afterwords you need to reboot and open up Nook Color Tools and you should see it in there when you select "Keyboard"
Then download the language modules - you will need an SD card in for this I have found. It has been a while, but I believe this works.
Once you see the keyboard the first time, long press settings gear key.
The list choices are blank on my Nook, but the lists are as follows (from the top):
Language modules
English-US
English-UK (default)
Czech
Danish
Dutch
French
German
Italian
Norwegian
Polish
Portugese
Portugese-BR
Spanish
Swedish
Layout
QWERTY (International)
QWERTY (English)
QWERTY (Danish)
QWERTY (Swedish)
QWERTY (Norwegian)
AZERTY
QZERTY
QWERTZ
Excellent, thanks. It was the reboot that I needed.

I hold the tablet (or phone) in one hand and swype-type with the other. SlideIT doesn't work nearly as well as Swype, and on Swype I can type either at similar speeds or even faster depending on the topic. General conversations are faster, but technical e-mails and what-not are slower because of the word recognition.
SwiftKey Ftw!!!!

Any tips for installing your keyboard that can be done for free? I am having a tough time with getting one up and running.
Nevermind, I got gingerbread keyboard working with File Expert. I had superuser access, but I didn't realize I had to mount system/app as rw. I thought it did it automatically. Much happier now!
JPEG42.....Thanks for the information. It worked like a champ.
I tried to use another app instead of Root Explorer but it was not able to do it. Root Explorer was the ticket on the mounting and moving the files.
Now I have more keyboard options to play around with.
I can't seem to see any other keyboard options. I have the gingerbread and thumb keyboard both installed, I put at least one in system/app and rebooted, and still in nook color tools only the android keyboard is an option.
So, if you don't like the Swype keyboard for some reason, the settings menu on the Streak 7 does not give the "Input Method" option. I finally found a way to change the input method.
If you go to the AccuWeather app, which should be preinstalled, and go to enter a new location, you will be asked what input method to use. From there, you can choose the regular keyboard, Swtpe, and most likely, any installed keyboards. This setting should stick, even in other applications.
I know this isn't exactly the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I hope it helps someone out
Normally under android you can long press any text input box and it will give you the option of changing input method you can then select any available keyboards that way
If you download a new keyboard or something, you have to remember to turn it on in settings before you can use it

Damn...I thought I was onto something. I never noticed that before, except in AccuWeather
