Q] SD card amount - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In settings it says I have 14.5 gb available on a 16gb card and I know u don't always get the full amount, but a gig and a half is a lot.... then I went into titanium backup and it says 15.8 available. Which should I believe?

Mine is always 14.5-9
Titanium is not accurate, I notice that on sd card memory info compared to Quick Sysytem or the likes

It's a lot more needed I think for those devices with not so much internal memory (including the older generation phones). Apps to SD saves that internal memory that your phone would be usually limited to. But for captivate users, I find 1.5GB of internal memory way more than enough. No point in putting apps to your SD since doing that slightly slows the app opening speed down.

[Q] 3 Storage areas????

ok so this is a simple question i know but conflicting topics have made me post this
i have 1gb system memory
5gb phone memory
29gb of sdcard space
So in short.... WHY CANT I MOVE ANYTHING TO MY ext_SD(the removable one) CARD I HAVE A CLASS 10 32GB SD CARD IM NOT ABLE TO UTILIZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*UPDATE EDIT=So looks like the culprit is yet again a phone company making mods to android
+1 to Close the open source!! and go back to google phones.. LG, MOTO, HTC, they all just bloat the sh** out of the phone and take away the modding capabilities
so if anyone has any advice on how or what i can move to my 32GB Ext_SD card... please let me know
I have no problem moving all as compatible apps to the as card. Some apps just don't have that option though.

Some of the games and such are adapted to save on sdcard

OK, I have a quasi solution for you I just thought about. /sdcard is internal and /sdcard/_ExternalSD/ is the your transflash card. Most apps are made to save data to /sdcard which does become an issue when some of the kickass games like shadowgun download 250MB plus of data plus all of your roms and media. What you could do, I gather, is move the directories like those game data directories to /sdcard/_ExternalSD/ and then crate a symlink to it with the same name in sdcard. It's probably what I'LLC do when this last GB is gone, lol.

That's a good idea just put them in the extra SD through the computer or if I can move it with astro maybe ill try that
Hopefully at least I can move my roms since they are the biggest space taker

No, he's talking about the external SD card...as in the card that you can pull out that stores your pictures and videos on. When you move an application on this phone to the SD card, it actually moves it to internal SD application storage. This is my second thrill and neither will move apps to the external SD card.
When you click on apps2sd app and move an app watch and see that your external SD card memory doesn't change at all.

Okay. Continue. I'm listening.
I have a 32 gig SD card I bought specifically to be able to move a ton of apps there. I haven't been able to do so and would love to rather than being limited to the 8 gigs on the phone.
Hope this helps

That method did not work, did not even recognize my sd card ("internal" or "external")
I can post that file when I get home tonight and see if anyone can get them edited.
Okay. Just tell me if I'm wrong. What I'm referring to and what I think the OP was referring to was that external SD card that you buy at the store where you store your music and pictures on. The SanDisk.
The other storage is internal storage, then there's system memory.
Cm7 fixes this.

Major space miscalculation by system

I've been facing miscalculated space for a while now. I have also noticed it on numerous other devices. Fresh flashes help so its obvious apps are taking huge chunks of memory at times that nothing shows only being around a couple hundred megs but that makes a huge difference still. This one is topping the cake though. (This is approximated and rounded up order)I went from 1.2GB on internal SD and and had added about 1GB of things. I have since deleted at least 1GB of things. I currently only have a little over 200MB of free space. I've also moved to HellyBean JB4.2.1 which is where this issue seems at its worst, but is not limited to. I only have two apps on SD right now and have just recently flashed.

You most likely have copies of your files around. Check for folders 0, 1, 2, etc. They're most likely copies of each other and y ou only need the 0 folder (and storage). Just make sure of the files that are in each before deleting.

I actually do check folders every once and a while. Especially for space reasons so that's not it. Unless there is some secret hidden folder that's hidden in some sub folder with 1gb of copied files that the system doesn't show. The only other thing I can account for is titanium backup but I'll extra over round that to 100mb. Still a massive difference.

have you tried SD Maid by darken.
There is a free version and a donate/pro version on google play. I got the pro version and it is a handy tool for cleaning up both internal and external storage, as well as bloat and debris in datadata and other root folders.

Just so use to have to storage locations that's all figured split it in half

It's probably possible. Not sure if it would be possible for the phone to read both partitions though.

I'm wondering if it already is. If there's pictures on my phone, and I need to reflash it, I would hope they would be saved to another partition so that I don't have to go through and back up all the stuff I want to keep.

There's a difference between the internal memory partition and the emmc. On my wife's NS4G it's the same. Anything on the emmc is not touched and the internal memory is flashed over.

So then there are 2 different storage points in the device, or the main storage is partitioned to be 2? If that's the case, then we should have access to all 32GB of storage, right? I'm pretty sure I'm wrong though.

According to pdadb.net the Sprint 32gb has 2gb of RAM and 29.7gb ROM. I bet around 4gb of that is for OS and Data and the remaining 25gb is accessible as storage.
I've got at least 16gb of music now on my 32gb SD and with backups, ROMs, and pictures have about 2-4gb available at anytime. My photos auto upload to Dropbox so I will probably get in that habit for other files.
I think with Google Play you can stream your cloud stored music to your phone. Does anyone know if there is a way to do that with the HTC Music player in Sense 5?

Probably not through the Music Player on Sense, but I use Google Play Music frequently. I've uploaded all of the music I have to it, and stream everything from there. Really the only stuff I have on my phone otherwise is pictures and a couple movies. And considering I have a 16GB card in my EVO 4G LTE, the additional space won't really worry me.

Can't move apps to sd card?

Is it true with kitkat u can't move apps to your sd card? If so then what is even the point of using an sd card? Just pics and movies? Which with 50gb of google drive u don't even need that, correct?
My #1 for an sd card is music storage. Finally, I can have a larger local library that doesn't need to be streamed.

And image backups
I still have the Evo LTE, and I will get the M8 eventually. I use my SD card to store my pictures, music, Titanium Backup folder, TWRP backups, and my very organized "Aaaaaa" folder. (For the record, I gave it that name so that it will be on the top of the list of every file manager, and especially for recovery mode. Coming from the days of the OG Evo, I didn't like clicking the volume buttons so many times.)
The better question is, why do you want to move your apps to the SD card? You have ample app space. Besides, the apps would only be moved to the internal SD, anyway. At least that's how the Evo LTE handled it.
As for Google Drive, that's only good when you have a data connection. I don't want to sort through my list of files named IMG1005-IMG1203 to find one picture, when I can use the stock gallery and get a beautiful preview. Also useless if you are on a plane with no wifi.

Even though this device has 32GB internal storage, so it's likely unneeded, you can still move apps to (external) SD card, using the built in functionality, for apps that support it.
It is possible to move apps! Go into Setting select Apps and pick a downloaded app scroll down till you see a button that says move...I did this to all my large games

That's good. But why?
For those of you who already have your M8, does it allow you to move google music/video files to the SD Card? I could do it on my old LTE but obviously didn't have an SD card for my M7.
This allows you the best of both worlds if you use something like Google Music/Movies, you can stream when you have connection, but can store specific playlists/movies and not have it clog up your memory if you can move it to the larger SD card.

25gb of storage isn't a lot when when some games are 2gb...One thing I hated with my OG one is having to delete a game just to install another game.
I get downtime at work and use entertainment to pass time

Fair enough. Thanks for the clarification.
Well, I can't get my Titanium Backup app to backup to my SD card. It is "interrupted" with insufficient space. However, there is 23GB's.
Bad SD card?
File Transfer
Soooo I may have overlooked it (although I highly doubt it) but, is there a native file viewer on the M8 that will allow us to transfer files to the SD Card? Perhaps an apk from an old HTC "my files" app or something? I guess I can wait for a ROM with those restrictions removed but I'm impatient...
