I rooted my Captivate last night using Super One Click and the Youtube video from MobileTechVideos. I installed Titanium Backup and uninstalled all the bloatware along with Tethering Manager to allow for mobile hotspots. However, this morning I discovered I now have no 3G access and can only access the internet via my wireless network. I haven't come across anything online to suggest how to fix this problem. I've tried restarting my phone but this didn't work. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Any suggestions guys?

Use ODIN one click to go back to an out of the box state and see if the problem persists. If it does then it could be your hardware or AT&T's fault.

Have you enable the data in wireless settings? maybe it has left uncheck.
If your with Rogers flash a different modem and that should solve the problem

Sometimes the simplest things are overlooked. All I needed was to check Use Packet Data in the Mobile Network Settings. Thank you for the easy fix! I was getting ready to unroot and start again.

I am confused...by wireless network you mean like the one from your network(for eg: ATT) one right? your problem is that you are getting EGDE but not 3G? I am sorry I didnt get your problem.

Glad you did. anyway we are not perfect sometimes we may overlooked something due to excitement or what other feelings as a result of what we do and clouded up our troubleshooting instinct. The best way is to be calm and don't panic it's just part of being a rom flashaholic, overtime it will increase your confidence and skill.

Hello everyone, I hope I can get assistance from you guys here.
I recently took the plunge and updated the firmware on my device, so I flashed it. The main reason being that it always took at least 5 seconds to do something in regards to playing music. It annoyed the hell out of me.
Anyway, so I updated the firmware to JM5 and now I can't access the internet. I've tried adding the correct APN's, I've even tried rolling back to an earlier firmware, but again to no avail. It is so annoying. I've tried 5 different f/w versions and in each installation have tried to add the APN and reboot and nothing works.
I can use the internet via WiFi but that's it. I can't use the net outside. Did I do something wrong? Am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance to any kind soul.
double check your apn settings and make sure data is enabled..
also for wifi, can you not see any access points, or is it just unable to connect to them?
have you wiped data/cache yet?
T h i s i s a d o u b l e p o s t.
Thanks for the fast response!
Well, all my APN settings are checked. Data IS enabled (is there a switch to disable that? apart from Roaming?).
WiFi works excellent. It's only when I try to use the mobile network's internet.
How do you wipe data/cache?
did you try the super wipe secret code? the one in red?
Yes, tried that as well. That's the one where it doesn't ask you to confirm resetting the phone right?
Did that after every install. I hope it gets fixed. Reinstalling all the apps even with app brain is tedious!

that's right
i love that code, it's perfect for every new flash, and if you ever need to take the device back for repair, or resale
sorry, not sure what else you can do about the APN not working.
it's really weird.
does it work if you go back to older firmwares?

Yes, even using old firmware up until June, nothing earlier than that. But it should let me use the APNs right?

Just received the reply from the network (O2UK). They advised me that the initial settings they sent was INCORRECT. I'm a PAYG user, and I mentioned this to them, so apparently they sent me POSTPAID settings. *facepalm*
Apparently it is recommended that people check their APN's if it's the PAYG or POSTPAID version that they need, and apply it accordingly. In my case, all firmwares would install the POSTPAID APN's.
It's now running fine and dandy, and here are the settings just in case another person here runs in to the same issue:
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
Username: vertigo
Password: password
MCC: 234
MNC: 10
Thanks for all those who took the time to help out. Much appreciated.
And I update to FroYo and even with the APN's, the phone won't connect to mobile internet anymore. Pfft. Anyone have a clue or a similar experience to this?
Hello all.
Ive searched (and unless I have no idea what i'm searching for) i can't seem to find an answer. I tried forum searches, browing through hundred of pages, and maybe its just me. Brain might be exhausted but here it goes. If it has already been solved then thank you in advance.
I HAD the VZW tab currently running the 2.5 alpha CDMA. After playing with it for a while I decided to go back to stock firmware because I wanted my 3g. The weird part was after factory reset and everything my baseband is now unknown and it can't pick up a signal. When i click on wifi I just get an error message. I tried a complete going back to originial stock with no root as per (i forgot to attach the link to the thread) but i still do not have service.
Under mobile networks (where there should be an option for GSM/CDMA/AUTO, that option is not there.
The activate with Verizon option isn't available that is supposed to be above wireless and networks.
Ive done factory resets, wipes, uninstalling voodoo, tried to updated modem.bin but it keeps failling.
Any suggestions?
Okay i managed to figure out wifi. I guess my mac address changed and i was using mac filtering on my router. Didnt know that address changes. Anyways anyone know how to get data back? I feel its in my modem.bin file but it keeps failing when i uploaded one that i found from a VZW tab
same issue I have
Wow I have same issue as your. Expect it is Sprint Tab. My tab couldnt pick up a signal and i tried to reuploading Modem.bin but it fail too. Let hope we have a solution
wow would not expect the mac address to change after a flash, I know that you can make it appear different >:¬}h
Had the same issue with phone, and had to manually input the ap settings from the carrier, but that was it, sorry for stating the obvious but did you try this?
The iemi and the mac adress can be changed by flashing. The data is in the system/efs folder.

Oh i know that but thought it was by design and not the event... New to me if it was.. I use additional security in wifi at him and by mac address and did not have to change... Interesting if this is the case

I experienced the same with my SGS (GSM), though I also changed the CSC. All that was required to solve it was to manually reenter the APs.

I guess I felt that way too because i really only filtered computers at the house and no matter how many times i formatted I always had the same MAC address. Glad that I figured that one out so I at least can use my SGT in wifi mode. Now the issue is trying to get my data back on (Verizon) since I'm paying for it. *sigh*

I did but no one had any information to give. I was transferred 3 times. Oh well. Since I am practically running a wifi tab Ill just re update to HC Alpha 2.5 just because I like the interface better. Hopefully if someone can find a fix ill take it.
I have tried to download 3 apps since I got my Bionic, and all of them have required me to tap into a WiFi to download them. One was a 102kb plugin for Dolphin Browser, one was the Speed Test (2.6mb), and one called RunPee (2.29mb).
These apps should cruise through the 4G LTE network. Is this something wrong with the phone, or the market? Are some of the developers making us download via WiFi?
That's weird. I've downloaded several apps and that's not a requirement for me. I've never had a need to use wifi since the 4G network is way faster.
(btw I'm rooted)
Same problem happened to me after I rooted. Factory reset fixed the problem.
Good luck

If you don't want to root, create a desktop shortcut to the servicemode app for the "WiFi Debug Screen" activity. Then launch it and turn off 'WiFi Power Save Mode'. Note that after every reboot you will have to turn it off again. I found this fix for my Galaxy S3, but noticed it also works on my Samsung tablets too. Seems to keep them connected all the time now.

How do we put servicemode app in the desktop? I remember it we
Can put activities using another launcher. Mine is touchwiz and can't download a thing because of this wifi issues.
Turning off the power save mode didn't help... On wifi information, it state that it's connecting but cannot connect at all
I can really confirm that ics makes my wifi nuts! Just restored stock HC and I was able to connect. What could happn?

That's weird. I have upgraded two of mine to the Malaysian ICS stock ROM and had no wifi issues.
If it is trying to connect I would look at the AP side. Presume you power cycled the AP? Also, try removing security to see whether this is an issue.
Good luck.
I already tried with or without security. Stock ICS and even dannoRom can't seem to connect. I even tried above post suggestion. Been wanting ics for my tab cause it's really better than Stock AT&T HC.

That is really puzzling. Trying to see what is going on probably needs getting the logcat and analysing that. Not an easy task, though! (see google for more info on logcat).
Good luck.
Here's a logcat from my tab. dunno where to look at, someone might knowledgeable bout this. thanks in advance.

Well done getting the logcat. Hope someone who knows what to look for sees it and answers. Looking through it there are no obvious error entries around wifi activity, though.
Is yours wifi only or 3G? I see mention of gsm so thought it must be the P7300.
Mine is actually the i957 which is the AT&T 4G.

Must be really frustrating as your thread seems to have hit a dead end.
Hope you get a resolution some time soon.
Update for my tab issue, I turn off use packet data, put to airplane mode and when I turned on wifi it suddenly connects to wifi. And even disabling airplane mode it stays connected. Pretty weird but finally it can connect to wifi.

Hello everyone I was wondering if it were possible to be blocked from tethering. I've read all the posts on how to reenable it, and even tried the WiFi tether router app. It all worked but suddenly two days ago while I was searching the net on my laptop, the T-Mobile upsell page popped up and hasn't left since. I've tried unrooting and relocking the phone then rerooting it. I've tried stock rooted and chroma custom ROM. Any help is appreciated

so ive seen youve used your tethering allotment. every tmobile "contract" comes with tethering included to them, besides for prepaid. its unlimited tethering for the limited plans, and 3.5gb tethering for the unlimited high speed data option. nothing like what you have done will do anything. i use the tether router app, as tmobile doesnt see me tethering when i use it. theres also an option for a build.ptop edit that will help as well.
That's what I'm saying. I've done that to where they saw me as using my data and not my tethering. For me now it doesn't work anymore. The build prop edit nor the app nor the sqlite settings.db route
Maybe they're getting clever. In the uk they use deep packet analysis to find out where the packets are coming from.

that happens. before any hacks were available, i tethered my whole home internet, until google caught on. then i used their legal tethering for a few years. last year i started using the wifi router app, and they havent seen me tethering yet. eventually, theyll catch on again.

So they blocked you even with the build prop and SQLite edit? That sucks because I use that and I don't want to be capped when tethering.

Yes they did and I've tried unrooting and rerooting try to fix the problem. I've even used the WiFi tether router app by Fabio Grasso, currently he's trying to help me get it to work. I've been reading around that this is happening to T-Mobile customers though. Haven't really seen any other carriers with this problem.

I wonder how they are checking for tethering and if they are using deep packets as another member suggested. I'm hoping someone will find a work around because after all this is why we have android phones.
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It is confirmed that the methods around the tether limit do not work. Once you reach your limit they block you. As for neither method works anymore.
