I am going to be traveling in Asia for a month. I don't need any of bells and whistles and I want a phone that is very stable, very energy efficient and GPS camera definitely has to works. Which rom/kernel will you recommend? any setting tricks? Thanks
I have tried Rod's MiuiMod, CM6.1.1, CM7 and many others.
I found that CM7 + WM 1/6/2011 kernel gives me the best battery life, but CM7 is still not in stable stage yet.
I have had the most battery life with Enomthers Rom, currently he is away on personal responsibilities but his latest stable rom is very battery efficient!
I have no recommendation as to kernel/rom combinations, but for long battery life I use this:
http://www.amazon.com/Seidio-Innocell-Battery-Google-Replacement/dp/B003FSTBP4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296521084&sr=8-2
I got really tired of barely making through a day without having to recharge so I bought one of these. I got mine for $61 on Amazon and free shipping. It's 3200mah which is over twice the stock battery. My first full charge/discharge cycle I got over 34 hours of moderate usage and it's supposed to get better after a few charge cycles. It does make your phone about 30-40% thicker (comes with it's own custom battery cover), but for the battery life you get it's well worth the added thickness. I also find it's a little easier to hold on to.
Anyway, maybe not the solution you're looking for but for me it was well worth the money.
Just my 2 cents.

That's one big battery Thanks tho, but I want my N1 to stay small.
I second the recommendation for Enomther's. Rock-stable.
I have no combo recommendation cuz I haven't found a really good one yet. Right now I'm using cm6.1 and wild monks kernel. It's been decent for me. But I suggest using set cpu, put on power save mode when you don't use the phone. It'll be there forever. Turn off data connection and gps as well. Also using less like half the animation helps speed up the phone and saves battery too.
Ps I'm combining inexus theme too and their icons plus the animations are amazing! My phone looks colorful as hell!

Lol yea it does add some bulk but it sure is reassuring to know I don't have worry about my battery dying before the day is over. I use my phone a lot and don't have time to really recharge it much and I don't like the idea of carrying extra batteries so this works very well for me.
I haven't done too many Roms, but miui has given me the most battery life out of stock, cm and miui.
I've been travelling and I managed to get 4-5 days with minimal calls and very light usage. If you use it normally with wifi and regular calls, 2-3 days is usually the limit.
Both these numbers are with auto airplane mode during my sleep hours.

What i have heard is that CM7 is 20-30% more efficient with battery life than CM6

In my personal opinion, CM7 Nightlies are really stable. After a real heavy usage i.e. playing games, surfing, calls, messages, i get about 15 hours a day.
My phone is fully charged when I leave at 8 and by 8 pm battery will be somewhere between 40 and 45 % left.
Bugs are there with CM7 Nightlies but so far I haven't had any problems with it.
Recently I've been through about 3 roms, and of the three (rod's, micromod's own GB aosp, and leo's GB aosp, leo's gives me the best battery life.
It might be because he incorporated the battery driver, though.
Hello all,
I have seen reports that because the source code for the captivate has not been fully released, some of the processes cannot be put to sleep when they are not being used, and therefore causes bad battery life. I am just about to flash CM 7.1 and am curious to know how the battery life is on the captivate.
All info is greatly appreciated!
LWt mw know what you find out! Just flashed it and my battery goes quicker than my bank account. Please let me know what I can do to help this I like the rom

Jaye,
This happens frequently when flashing a new ROM, you should try wiping the battery stats or giving the ROM a few days to calibrate with the battery.
Been a week for me and battery life is still horrible. I lose about 25% an hour

You should try a custom kernel like glitch or Neo to see if that will help. I get awesome battery life in miui which is bases of cm7. I find that neo gives me the best battery life.

What do you think about the Boog Kernel?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294849
Also, some people must be getting solid battery life, or CM7 wouldn't be as popular as it is. Or is this a known thing with CM7?

Yeah that's pretty awful. Try doing a battery calibration to see if that helps. It should never go that quick (unless you're playing some serious games). I've never really had great battery life with cm7/miui I've had the best battery life with all the recent samsung gingerbread leaks. I think those are better than cm7. But that's my opinion.
I am in CM7.1 since Sunday. I had very awful battery in start. So I did battery calibration, manually. So I got very decent battery on wifi. But at work I use att data so again my battery life was horrible. But I am seeing improvement since I am using this app called green power to manage my data. Try that.

If you get good battery on WiFi but not with mobile data, try a different modem. Not only are some modems inherently better on battery, but if you find one that gives you a better signal you should see improvements in battery life as well.
Flashing the Glitch kernel seems to have improved my battery life.

Solid Battery Life w/ Stock Kernel
Hey Everyone,
Juts came to report that I have been getting great battery life using the stock kernel. I would say it is a little better than Serendipty VII Build 2 which I came from. Only issue, and this is something I know is inherently wrong with Cyanogenmod on the Captivate, when you fully charge the device, it only shows it is charged to 98%.
Other than that, all good!

Have you seen an improvement in this regards, I am having the same issues, the WiFi is draining my battery slower then my data is.
I have also done the battery calibration and it doesn't seem AS bad... still doesn't appear to be great though.
I am just coming back to this ROM after experiencing battery issues even though Glitch helped a little. I decided to try and tweak some more this go round.
I am experiencing much better results this time. Here are settings and other tweaks or modifications I have in place.
-sync is turned off
-using Launcher Pro with very few widgets (just 3GWatchdog and Power Control)
-auto brightness turn off manually adjust according to need
-gps, wifi, BT, and data turned off when not in use
-wifi notification and location detect off
-installed jk4 modem (may get better results with different modem depending on your area)
-installed Glitch v12 high leakage
-the biggest factor this time I think is UVing on the Freqs that are used while phone sleeps >>>>>100/200mhz (set for the lowest UV setting possible on these that do not result in a sleep death or reboot when phone is put to sleep)
I don't even know why I'm bothering with this post really.
It's like I really love this phone, I love the size, the feel, the look. I love it.
I just cannot forgive the battery life. The camera, which to be fair is crap, I can let that go. But that battery life, oh dear me, even after rooting and trying every rom or kernel known to man I can lose over 30% battery life with just an hours 3G surfing, watching that battery percent whittle away whilst I use it is painful. That, and then the fact it gobbles up battery life (media server) just playing songs, it drives me insane.
Such a shame, vanialla stock android id beautiful, I can't go over to samsung because of my hate for touchwiz, and HTC suffer similar battery woes.

cheers for that, ill be sure to go right over there and post in there as well... thanks so much for all your help, you're an inspiration to us all .
My battery life is fantastic, the N4 is one of the best Android phones I have had in this respect. A day of moderate use, and I always have 50% remaining...
Rather than crying, try posting your battery stats.... It's possible it's nothing at all to do with your N4, but a rouge app.
Also give the Qualcom battery saver app a go.

I have been looking at the HD+ for sometime and i might get one..i have had a few android tablets and i like the price of this one MUCH more.
few questions..
"The Verge" .com review was horrible..they showed Bad Bad lag, unlocking the screen, pulling the notifications shade down, swithing users etc..was this just a bad hardware issue or is this THAT laggy? did a software update fix it? what would all of you compare the smoothness to especually if you have owened more expensive tablets.
i know you can run CM10.1 but could i run nova launcher on top of the stock software? i read that the stock software gets better battery life?
talking about that..what are you all seeing for battery life and screen on time?
after reading all your comments i will make my decision. also the screen looks georgous and that is what i want..NO Pixels..haha
Thanks in advance!!

I've had my hd+ for a couple weeks, since 2.0.6, so I don't know about previous revs, but its not distractingly laggy or anything horrible like that. I've found it completely acceptable especially due the fact that it is well done in many other regards.
You can run any launcher you want now, even easier since they added google play store support built in, with 2.1.0.
Battery life is really fantastic, depending upon what your doing, etc.. your screen on time will go 6-9 hours easily. Sleeps well, with minimal battery loss as well.
I haven't bothered with cm because i'm quite happy with stock, so I can't comment much on that.
Your not gonna find a better value anywhere. The screen is amazing, 256 ppi and the color tuning they did is just gorgeous. toss in a 64gb sdcard like I have and you get 96gb super high res tablet with great battery life for far far less than anything else on the market.
I second everything andmer says. I'll add that I bought an HD+ right after they were released, and I never had any lag problems and loved the device from day 1. I only had responsiveness issues with the internet browsers I used(stock and maxthon), but the problems weren't that bad, really. Now with the new software update, everything is far smoother and faster than it ever was (for me, at least), and the Chrome browser has replaced the stock browser and is super-fast. I will reinstall Maxthon later tonight and see if that's any better now.
As for battery life, I've heard some people say on the B&N forums that they're getting some battery drainage since the update that they didn't have before, but i haven't had to charge my HD+ for 2 1/2 days and I've been using it a lot in that time--not constantly, but at least for 2-3 hours a night, including reading, installing apps, and lots of internet usage. I think certain apps (ones that are set to constantly update or sync) are to blame for the drain and not the operating system.
The screen is gorgeous--I've compared it in person to friends' tablets and even my wife's iPad mini, and it looks better than all of them. Again, no complaints and I would highly recommend it!
Great info guys...i may grab one today..i mean..how can you beat 179???
heh, i know what you mean..I just picked up a 32gb HD+ from my local target yesterday for $215 after taxes...Far better than $330

I just got mine today, but so far i am VERY pleased with it.
You can definitely use Nova launcher, Ive got Nova, Apex, Go and Next 3D on mine right now (just playing around to see what i like the most on here, I use Nova and Next 3D on my HTC One). I was worried about the increase in screen size, but they scale perfectly.
I have no long term battery experience since i just got mine, but ive played on it all evening and the battery has been quite good. It also seems to charge pretty quickly.
Until about three weeks ago, i was a manager for an AT&T corporate store and got to demo a lot of Android tablets. I was honestly never impressed with any of them. I bought this Nook HD+ because i just started really getting into rooting and flashing custom ROMs, hoping to eventually work my way up to some light development. At the current price, i couldnt resist the Nook.
In all honesty i like it far more than other Android tablets ive used that are built with much higher specs. I cant quite explain why :silly:
Regardless, theres no buyers remorse here what so ever. Hope you pick one up, and enjoy it as much as i am mine :good:
I do not feel any serious lag with stock rom 2.10 and based on benchmark numbers it is actually quite good.
(Same scores to Nexus 7 in HTML5 benchmark, 44FPS in 1920x1280 with Epic Citadel 3D gaming benchmark. Nexus 7 has 55FPS)
I tried CM10 and CM10.1. I really liked CM10.1 but running it on SD card is just too slow mainly due to slow read/write by the SD card.
Once they have a stable build it may be possible to replace stock rom completely with CM10.1. That way there would be no I/O penalty from the SD card. At the moment though I would stay with stock rom 2.10 at least for some time.
well..i have to say..i returned the nook...apps like flipboard ran SO laggy, i mean bad..i was on stock 2.1 and tried nova also..no dice..in the end i could not handle some of the lag...
did i maybe have a bad nook?

Sorry about your bad experience. I don't use flipboard so I can't comment on that.
I tested dungeon hunter 4 in single player mode. It runs really smooth just like on the Nexus 7.
Also web browsing and playing online videos both work perfectly.
Maybe it doesn't work well with the apps that you use. If so it may not be a good fit to your needs.
Guys,
Just received my tablet and I am thinking about immediately swapping the stock ROM for a custom ROM but I am wondering what is the battery life comparison. I have seen benchmark comparisons which look ok (i..e slightly faster via custom ROM) but I have not seem battery life comparisons.
Specifically, because this is more a casual use tablet, I am more interested is how long the device will last when its not used, rather than on-screen time with stock versus custom, but any advise as to what is the best option. So, has anyone done battery comparisons with the various ROM's available?
Thanks

Hey Jerome! I'm running slim ROM and the battery is amazing! It's way better than stock because all of the amzon crap is gone so its not draining the battery.
I'm a casual user on this too and only really use it in the evenings for light web browsing and a few games. The battery easily lasts me three or four days before I have to plug it again.
When the screens off and its in idle it only drains about 1% every five hours! I thought it was broken at first because I'm so used to my phones battery draining.
I don't use any power saver apps or anything. I originally had greenify, wakelock detector and better battery stats ready in case of drainage when the screen was off but deleted all of them as they were uneeded!
I'd def go custom rom! Really recommend slimrom its great!
Cm12 is great too and the battery was good on that, its just better for me on slim!
Sorry if this was a well long answer!
