Is it possible that in auto nooting my ver. 1.1 Nook Color that it has installed spyware?
Perhaps it is just coincidence but a week or so ago I purchased a game from the app store with my credit card on my nook color. Now this week I see a charge from an online clothing store and also someone tried to use my CC# to open an amazon account.
I canceled the card but have never had anything like that happen before.
The purchase went through google accounts.
Perhaps it is just coincidence but I don't know enough about android to see if it is contacting some external site discreetly.
Any thoughts?

I bought the Nook Color while visiting Boston few weeks ago and activated it in some random Apple store (free wifi!)
Now I'm wondering, if I ever need to activate it again while not in the US, are there any workarounds? or can it be activated from anywhere?
I activated mine from Hong Kong, no issues. afaik you don't have to be in the USA to activate it, the only thing about the NC is that you have to be in the States to buy books from B&N (and that is only IP-wise too) and go on Pandora.

Ok good to know
One more question, when I load my own epubs to the nook, they show up in all the right places except for the home screen, there are only the b&n books, any way to get my own epubs there?
Activated in Spain with no problems. The only issue is you can't buy anything out of USA.
Yeah it works. I still hope someone here finds a way to circumvent the activation / registration process. Nobody knows how much the nook is phoning home to B&N.
Also, some versions of the classic nook firmware forced registration like the nc, and B&N filtered non US IP addressss...
Their TOS allow them to disable your device by deactivating your account. So if our NOOKs for instance send back lists of installed apps, B&N would know that we rooted (went against their TOS) and could deregister our device ... yeah, all this might not be a big deal since accounts can be easily created again, but that again might change.
that's a great news, I order my NC today, but I live in france.
Is there a way to root before registering?
Yeah, I believe for our rooting method it doesn't matter when we do it.
Now, even if you are rooted you'd have to know which files to change so that the registration Wizard doesn't come up. Maybe you could just kill the process of the wizard via adb, but you might have to do this at every boot and maybe the wizard is part of some larger app, like the DeviceManager.apk that has to run in the background all the time.
You can test and unregister, then register again via the menus. So maybe analyzing the data partition's differences in between could help us find the important files.
On a registered device I already tested deleting /data/system/accounts.db, which caused my name etc. to disappear from he device info. Still the wizard did not come up again, and I believe there must be another place where the nook saves a account ID or at least a bit that says, "wizard is finished". I also tried to delete the data directory for the device manager. This simply caused a notification to appear at reboot, that my device has been updated. (Of course it hasn't been updated). Still no wizard to be seen and root was left untouched.
Hi
My Nook is rooted and is great. However I'm needing to deregister it so the new owner can use it.
Whats the best way to do this? I'm not 100% sure I actually have the B&N password as I'll never order from them being in the UK.

So I am in Barnes and noble and I am connected to their wifi however the nookc does not recognize I am in store so none of the promotions come up in the store. This is a problem because they usually have good deals if you are in store not to mention free food as well. Is anybody else with a rooted nook having this problem in store?
This has been posted several times and is likely due to the rooted Nook reporting as another device type to fool the Market and other apps. Only non-rooted will get the promos.
I've got a few purchased Nook books, and they sync perfectly between my HTC Android phone Nook app and my desktop computer Nook app, however the rooted Nook Color refuses to sync. I've tried several times, but no dice. The books show up on the Nook, but the page read just won't sync. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution short of rolling the Nook back to stock? It's kind of driving me nuts when I switch between devices. Can't find this issue mentioned anywhere else.
Love the rooted Nook besides this 1 issue.
If no one has a solution, has anyone else noticed the same problem?
I noticed this as well and just assumed that their software doesn't sync pages between devices. The Nook app on my G2 pulls down my purchases just fine, but does not remember where I leave off.
Anyone else?
My HTC MT4G definitely syncs with B&N's Nook store - last page read shows up when I open the same book on the PC Nook software - and vice versa.
B&N claims that their software syncs across all platforms. I'm thinking Rooting breaks this.
I use the nook app on epic 4g and the nook color reader (rooted) and the 2 don't sync. I would love to flash my nook color to stock and try, then try after a fresh root (since I have a few things that seem to break over time with root) but i sadly don't have enough time right now.
Also my in store wifi features don't work. Anybody here have in store working wanna check if sync also works?
Hi all,
Just bought my wife a NC for Mother's Day and we're having some issues. Every time we go to the BN "Shop" we get "A Problem Occured". We can't view magazines, books, games, etc. We're on WiFi and are able to view web pages via the browser.
Is it just because it's Mother's Day (high traffic)? Does the "Shop" play up often or for anyone else.
FYI: I'm new to NC, but not to Android. As it's my wife's NC, I'd rather not root it unless that ends up being the best way to get apps.
Thanks for any info you can provide!
Rooting it is going to be the way you will be able to install other apps outside of the Nook Marketplace. You can also look at running another OS and booting it off the sd card.
There servers have crashed at high volume shopping days before. The days after Christmas were a pain, so it seems possible. Everyone probably opened their new NC yesterday and were probably trying to buy stuff at the same time.

If you're still on virgin stock, I'd try again and/or call B&N. You shouldn't be having those kind of issues and I had no problems with a rooted NC both the day after and today with the shop.
Thanks for your reply. We'll take it by the nearest BN store and see if we can get on the wireless there. I'm not ruling out a router issue at home as we still have a fairly old router.
Okay picked up this Nook Color very reasonable second hand. It had the Nook Color 1.2 factory OS installed and came with a 8gb N2A card as well. I fired it up and updated to the 1.3 OS however when I try to register the unit it gives me an error that there is issues.
Needless to say after contacting customer service I found out that the serial number is associated with a different email and B&N account.
Long story short I have tried to contact the previous owner regarding this issue without any luck. I have read a ton of "unregister your Nook" kind of articles but almost all of them deal with 1.0.1 or 1.1 OS's. None of them work!
Is there any way that any of you know how to unregister this unit without contacting the previous owner? B&N will not, of course, do this! They keep telling me to contact the previous owner and get the account information or have him or her unregister the unit.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
Well for anyone that is looking to purchase a second hand Nook Color or any of the Nook tablets, be sure to check with the seller to ensure it is deregistered!!!!
I have spent several hours with Barnes and Noble customer support and there is nothing they can/will do until I actually have the original owners shipping address and the last four digits of the credit card that is on file at Barnes and Noble.
Naturally if I had that information I would have been able to contact the original owner and have him or her deregister the unit.
So, bottom line is this: If you purchase a Nook of any sort that is still registered and are unable to get the original owner to deregister the unit you cannot use that unit to log into your Barnes and Noble account! Your left with running modded software. Not really a bad thing, however if you want to have and use a B&N account your pretty much screwed!
It's not hard to restore NC to "fresh from the box" stock.

That completely wipes any user data and gives you a fresh start.

That won't work as when you register your device it gets connected with that account and will only work with that account until it is deregistered.

That is exactly correct! If the unit is not deregistered through B&N a person is pretty much screwed being able to use it as a Nook.
there is the screen tap thing that a person can get past the setup crap and enter the factory view, however you cannot get any apps, books, or games to download on the device.
