My search-fu seems to be failing me. Could I trouble anyone to find me a working Erris ROM/Radio that will play nicely with my Hero?
That will be lovely and I shall be forever in your debt

The radio will likely not do much good. Some here have done that to no avail. As for a ROM, you would have to port whatever ROM you like over there. AFAIK there haven't been any Eris ports done? Others may chime in on that.

perhaps just flashing a PRL will do the trick? Though from what I've read flashing the radio could perhaps be good too? (as what i've read indicated that Sprint and Verizon uses two different parts of the same spectra?)
Slightly confused, would like more input.
Thanks!
Here is a Verizon radio that worked on my Hero. I believe it is from the Eris.
Be advised, if you flash this radio, I accept no responsibility for anything that may happen. It did work for me, but that is no guarantee that it will work for you.

Aha! Now we're getting somewhere!
Any compatibility issues with this radio rom I should know about? Or hows about this, what droid ROM are you running on your Hero?
Scratch that, I went ahead and flashed the radio, so far so good. I think my next step is to flash a PRL on there and do something else that can not be mentioned on this forum
None the less, I think i've gotten at least one step closer..
Still open to more input!
Thanks

Not biased at all
(But seriously he did a kickass job)
Its just depressing to see Vibrant listed for future support for cyanogen roms, while the captivate is not. Hopefully the port is easy.

Last I heard they where making a universal cm6 for galaxy S. Perhaps working on the vibrant but end goal would make it universal. Oh well...perhaps i was wrong it wouldn't be first and def wouldn't be the last.
Same hardware so I don't see the problem with getting CM6 to work for us. Hell the Vibrant one might work straight across.
Side question, has anyone tried flashing a captivate with a vibrant kernel?
pretty good chance that CM6 should work as is, I'm running Vibrant6 at the moment with no issues other than the TMO stuff but that is nothing to worry about

I'm actually using the Vibrant source release to build my Captivate kernels. They're about the same but many things are missing from the Captivate sources. The compiled kernels are quite different though - the two version are built with different configurations and have different files in initramfs.

A couple of reasons
1) there isn't any 4 G coverage where I live and refuse to pay an extra 10 dollars for a service I'll never use. I'm in agreement with the folks behind explainthefee.com on that subject.
2) EVDO sucks here as well. 90% of the time I am on 1x instead of full EVDO.
Thanks for the answers so far by the way. Has Samsung finally gone along with the rest of the Open Handset Alliance and standardized on their file system layout or is it still as screwy as the one on the Moment?

They don't share towers, BUT you can install a VZW PRL file which force a sprint phone to use VZW towers. That helped me a little.
The main reason I moved to AT&T was Sprint's decision to not include Froyo on any of their older Android phones. The Hero, which now runs CM6 and the Moment, which has the same CPU as the moto droid, will get no further enhancements. I hated that. I was ready to jump to T-Mob and the Vibrant but the Amazon deal for a penny on the Captivate got me here.
AT&T is great here. I'm not in a major metro area, and that seems to be where AT&T fares the worst.
Hello everyone.
I had a quick question i was hoping for some feedback on. My girlfriend is using a HTC hero CDMA as her cell phone. It is currently running 1.5 and it is abysmally slow and unwieldy. I told her I would try to get her fixed up with a nice custom ROM. I am familiar with the entire rooting/flashing/recovery process so I don't need any help there. All I need to know is, what do you consider to be the best daily driver 2.2 ROM there is right now. I won't be fidgeting and flashing ROMs on her phone every 4 days like I do with my phone. I would just like to find a functional 2.2 and load that up for her and call it a day. Opinions are immensely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Either CM or AOSP.
Those are the only fully functioning 2.2 ROMs currently.
My current setup is:
CM-Nightly-166 ( http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=heroc )
GAPPS ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880787 )
Use BatteryTweak from Deca's thread or SetCPU to overclock CPU. May have to experiment with speeds that your phone can handle.
Deca's Kernal ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756774 )
AOSP. Plain and simple. It'll run fast. Won't need any tweaking. She won't be able to mess anything up.

I would have to say cm. Aosp just lacks functionality and customization that someone who doesn't really care for linpack scores would find quite useful. Aosp is stripped down to the bare bones of android to squeeze every drop of speed. I think your lady would appreciate cyanogen more than she would aosp.

It comes down to features vs. speed, really.
-If she likes to sit and mess with features and customization all day, then CM6 is the way to go.
-If she just wants something that works and is fast, aospMod is the way to go.
Personally, I liked the features of CM6, but after using both I went with aospMod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782320

FLAMED. no just messing with you. If you think she would like a themed STABLE 2.2, chack out the "mau5" rom by decad3nce and the themed roms (there's 4 of them) by jaybob413. They are a little more upstream than CM6.1 stable and have some nice tweaks built in
I would recomend aosp 0.9.8 .............works great for me..........very fast

There are quite a few themes for aosp now and it is way customizable if you put launcher pro on her phone. I never liked the stock launcher.

Agreed. But we are not talking themes, we're just talking stock versions. Stock cm is far more customizable than aosp is. Also, cm has just as many, if not more, themes available for it. As an aside, cm doesn't use the stock launcher either. It uses ADW.

There us a hero cdma and a hero gsm. Make sure which one you are using. This is the cdma version forum here. Ultimately, if you have su, then I suggest just using rom manager to choose, download, and install. Helps to ensure no mistakes

Hi.
I was a WM phone user was flashing ROM's over there for a couple of years. Changed to Iphone because WM doesn't have Apps. Then I didn't like being chained down to 1 phone and miss my HTC Phones so I switched to Android So now I'm back in school learning! But it seems to be harder here with Android people aren't very easy about giving up "How" to stuff for MetroPCS for some reason?
Ok. Here are some questions I have. First I will tell you the phone is rooted and I'm on MetroPCS.
From what I've learned my MetroPCS information must be stored in the root because I just flashed aospCMod | AOSP 2.3.3 / CM7 (Gingerbread) to my phone and everything works MMS, Data. So is the information stored in Root?
I use to update Radio's all the time with WM. Do I need to update the Radio? Being on Metro PCS not sure if I have limits on what I can do or not.
Pretty much I figured out once the phone is rooted you can pretty much do anything you want I guess it's like Hard SPL for WM.
Anyone that has any tips or information towards MetroPCS would be great Not sure what all I can do.
Thanks,
Rick
I think the main reason that the how to stuff is difficult for you to find is because the vast majority of CDMA Hero users are on Sprint.
As far as radios are concerned, I've had my Hero since last April and have updated my radio once. I would assume that the Sprint radios would work for you, although I will not guarantee it. Flash them at your own peril.
Don't forget to keep a Sense nand handy on your sd card so that you can flash back and update your prl. An updated prl will solve a lot of text and data issues.
All of this should be taken with a grain of salt, as I'm not familiar with MetroPCS.

You should have made one when you rooted. Otherwise, any Sense rom will allow you to update it.

I got a Hero and I'm changing the service provider from Sprint to Metro PCS, and I was wondering if I was going to still be able to upgrade my phone from Eclair to 2.2 or 2.3 because to be honest it is a bit slow and the battery does drain a bit fast. Should I have upgraded the phone's version before I got it switched over? Will it cause any problems if I try to upgrade the android version after I get it's service switched?
Just a few questions, thanks in advance for any answers you guys give me.
the carrier has nothing to do with rom speeds and how do u think cm7 is slow..
If you are talking about an official update from the carrier, then no. Sprint never issued a froyo update for the hero, let alone a gingerbread one. I doubt Metro did either. Now, if you're talking rooted and flashing an update, then yes, you can.

I'm getting it switched over to metro and it will work with everything, the internet, market, picture messaging, ect. If I were to switch roms will my settings for metro pcs be deleted or changed? If so, please let me know.
What is the best rom to put on my Hero for performance and battery?
If I were to switch a rom would I still have picture messaging?

Serious answers only? You're in the wrong place for that, and I've found that people go out of the way just to mess with people when they start that stuff.
As far as performance and battery, you'll need to try out different roms until you find one that works well with your device.
Roms don't change anything to do with carriers. So your metro settings should be fine.
Picture messages generally work on most of the roms. You'll need to read the op to find out, usually.

Any Chance or any way to port this rom in the cdma hero? , if its possible on the Mytouch 3G? it could be possible to port it on the Hero right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025330
Well since the specs are all similar I would have to assume it would be possible. PM thoughtlesskyle as he is the best porter here. I will try to learn how to port and work on it but it could be very difficult because the htc drivers are different then other ones and because i have never done anything like it before lol . I would surely hope this is possible though because I would love life again. It would probably make me **** out sunshine and piss double rainbows if it happened. Thank you for sharing this with us though.
Actualy after investigation , I realize it is difficult to port a gsm rom to cdma. I frankly do not know anything about how to do it. The person who was the absolute best at that but has now left us was zenulator. Id ask as many devs as you can on how to do it, etc. It could take quite a while. A while back there was a thread on this (it ended in april) and it was not going well. I hope it works better this time.
Sorry to post again lol but i looked up some more about the radio issues and apparently there is an app on the market called network that allows you to choose the cdma radio instead of the gsm radio when you boot (although you gotta do it every time you boot) otherwise the phone would always look for gsm radio service and it would kill your battery. Other then that though this should be possible.
thoughtless kyle and tazz has already been working on that for a couple months now and its very stable
