Multiple part question. Rooting and rom flashing - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a few problems i'm having. Have done multiple roots (z4, super one click) and have super user access but doesn't show any where. If that matters our could be the reason to my problem. I have rom manager and multiple roms but everytime I try to install them I get some error message saying the certificates could not be verified. Does any one have a suggestion about what is wrong?

rom manager is poop...use clockwork i created a roms folder on my sd where all my roms go its easier to use clockwork mod. update for it is attached copy to internal sd and boot recovery with 3 button combo and select reinstall packages might have to do it twice till you see it then select rom and and install reboot and success

Tried it 3 times still had the same problem.

What rom are you on? Sounds like you don't have root. If super user is not there then that is your problem. The root didn't take, you need super user

I have super user access but it doesn't show up in amy of the info as rooted. When i troed to unroot and reroot using super one it said i had a temporary abd root and to restart my device to remove it. I did that but it still says the same thing. I'm trying to get cognition v4

BACKUP
1.Flash stock
2. Master Clear
3. Grab a CW mod recovery update zip from on of the threads.
4.Copy said zip and rom zip to phone
5. Follow directions to flash rom. Lots of FAQ on how to do it

What do you mean by flash stock?

I've done it the way this website, theunlockr.com and numerous youtube videos have said to do out. I keep getting the ertor (E: failed tp verify whole-file sinature. Followed by E: signature verification failed installation aborted)

This is how you "flash back to stock": http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ

It's crucial you read most of it, and then ask if you don't understand any of the steps there.

Gingerbread network connectivity issue

Hi guys, I'm new to Android, swaped my 3Gs for a N1, I manually updated the phone to FW 2.3.3 (GRI40), the phone is stock, no root, no custom firmware.
The phone randomly loses network connectivity, (no network available message on display) I can't connect using 3G but I can with Wi-Fi, can't make phone calls, only way to fix this is to reboot the phone or switch airplane mode on/off.
I have radio version 5.08.00.04, kernel 2.6.35.7-59423-g08607d4.
I like this phone and don't want to swap it for an iPhone 4, but this issue is starting to get on my nerves, please let me know if there is a fix for this.
Root and flash cm7.2. Has more goodness than others. Then flash Inexus theme to make it eyecandy when look at and google apps package.

Ok, I tried everything and nothing seems to work, I reverted back to FRG33, but I can't root the device, everything fails, I can't go back to EPE76 or something else, I get the old version error.
I can't update to 2.2.1 or anything higher than that (including moded GRI40 versions) because I get the signature error.
Basically I can only install FRG33 or GRI40 (stock FW), the phone works fine on FRG33 but I would like to be able to install 2.2.2 (FRG83G i think), cause the 2.3.3 is just crap, reminds me of some older iPhone firmwares.
So, what should I do, cause i'm out of ideeas, please keep in mind that this is my first android phone when you explain something.
Thanks.
You can either root, or flash the updates one at a time:
FRG33> FRG83> FRG83D> FRG83G> GRI40...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
I tried that but it doesn't work, I receive the no signature error.
I got the fw from the wiki.
Strange...
Just for a sanity check, make sure that the files you downloaded aren't a zip within a zip, and MD5 check for integrity...

I checked the archives, everithing is fine, I done a factory reset and tried again with the same result.
I am on FRG33 now (I flashed the rom using passimg.zip copied on the SD), trying to update to FRG83, I got the ROM's from here. I receive this error:
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
This sh**t is driving me mad.
I got bootloader 0.35.0017 and it's unlocked.
You're unlocked?
Are you running a custom recovery (Ra)?
Have you turned signature verification off?

I bought this phone from a guy, and I don't know exactly what he has done with it before but when I go into bootloader (trackball+power) I get a line that says unlocked, I don't know exactly what it means, it's like the one in the attachment.
It means your bootloader is unlocked. Basically, you now have the ability to install images to the phone through fastboot on the PC.

After a few hours of reading and rom download I managed to update 2.2 to 2.2.1 using this rom "766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip" not sure where I downloaded it from but worked like a charm and then I applied the the updates to get to 2.2.2 (FRG83G).
And now, how do I root? I tried SuperOneClick, I installed the USB drivers etc, the software runs, it installs superuser on my phone, the SOC SU test is OK but I installed Terminal on the phone and the SU command returns access denied, also I installed Root Manager and it doesn't start because it doesn't have sufficient permissions, I have no pop-up when opening to grant root access to Root Manager.
Any ideas?
I finally managed to root my phone thanks to Danger-Rat's super easy tutorial you can find here
Thanks for all the help.

noob rooting troubles. HELP PLEASE!

I am trying to root my stock revo V7 2.3.4. I am not able to get through to it. I am not familiar with rooting but want to get more out of this phone. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for getting me in the right area guys. Sorry, wasn't trying to cause any problems.
I have tried the one click version with mt and it never took. Mt even tried doing it for me. I have enabled debugging and dollars each step to the last detail.
I have also tried superoneclick with no success on the install. I'm unaware of how to do it manually.
Thanks

Have you tried a different computer? Even doing it the manual way will require the same exploit, and more than likely will result in the same outcome.

What method of root did you use? And check your app drawer for revo tool kit then you need to download the clockwork mod recovery check what recovery you have if it isn't the 4.0.0.2-pr1 then you need to click on to install that if it didn't go through the first time keep trying but do not reboot after it says it successfully installed hit the menu soft key And reboot in to recovery once you are in there make a back up by going to the backup And restore part And choose back up after you should wipe your data by going to format system INSIDE CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY not from inside your phone settings for gingervolt you need to put the zip on your external sd card so that means not the one that says internal place it on the root ( main portion) not in folder then reboot into recovery (if you had to boot to put ginger volt on your sd) the same way as before then go to install zip from sd card choose the gingervolt zip nitty the install update.zip option select yes let it install then reboot.. Also in clockwork recovery you use to volume keys to navigate up And down And the power button to select

Am I supposed to download these items with my phone or when it is hooked up to my computer? I used allinoneclick by my. Worked great. I am an extreme noob with this so thanks for walking me through these steps. I do not have the tool kit in my apps

If you rooted with mts all in one click that has cwm sticking just go into it manually. I always download everything to the phone directly makes it easier for me.
How do I get into clockwork mod? I installed and hit recovery. Whenever I hit the menu key, the more option is not there. I'm so confused

Best way to check you have cwm download revotool kit and check that way. If it says you have it then you can reboot from revo toolkit.

Its been a while since I have been in the toolkit. There should be a button somewhere that says check recovery or something like that. You could go to the revo toolkit page and look at what the OP put on there sorry I can't really help to much on that.

Rooting/Flashing ROM questions

How compareable is flashing roms on the Droid 3 compared to the HTC Eris. I'm tired of the lag and bloat and wish to try some new ROMs. I just don't want brick my phone. Rooting looked simple but I don't understand bootstrap/safestrap. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get bootstrap/safestrap from the internet -- install the app.
Run the app, install recovery.
Turn phone off.
Press m + power.
Scroll to BP Tools -- select it.
You're in custom recovery.
Which is better, bootstrap or safestrap?

Safestrap by far, the rom will install to another partition /preinstall rather that /system. This keeps the VZW rom intact to prevent bricking and still get OTAs easily. It's practically impossible to brick it using Safestrap.
Thanks, I'll be giving this a try!

So root (obviously), install safestrap, then I just boot into recovery via safestrap and flash Liberty 2.0? Just being anal, the more I read the less confident I get. Once I burst my cherry, I should feel better. Lol. Thanks for all the help everyone!

if ur stock 5.6.890, root, install otarootkeeper, install safestrap, open the app, install recovery, boot into recovery (during boot you will hit menu), backup data, toggle safe mode, install ROM, wipe data/cache, reboot
---
check http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/p/android-downloads.html for safestrap and CM7 downloads. also if you are on 5.7.894 you will need to use his patch to run any roms.
Did you mean wipe data/cache THEN install ROM?

most roms either way will work
Rooted, install ota rootkeeper, installed and ran safestrap, rebooted into recovery, tried to turn on safe mode and got error. rebooted and tried to make a back up, got error.
Error occured when attempting to make backup image of /data
Happened both times. Am I royally screwed?
Phone works still but I don't dare flashing a ROM until I get safe mode. Hints?
If im not mistaken, rootkeeper doesnt need to be used unless you are going to install 5.7.894, as it messes with your roms ability to access SU
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
My phone had trouble mounting as R/W when i got a SU update via the superuser app off the market, i unprotected and updated my binary again and it worked fine. Keep OTA Rootkeeper installed, activate it before upgrading to an update that has no root method yet, then after you reinstall SU, and reestablish the symlink in your new update, remove the protection and verify you still have root. Its not necessary for CWM recovery tasks though
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
So if I lose ota rootkeeper, I can create a backup? My problem is I can't create a data backup or switch to safe mode. It gives me an error message that says unable to create backup image of /data. Am I corrupted? My phone still works as far as I know.

Safestrap and bootstrap(I believe) have issues creating a backup of a file that cannot be changed. So yes if you remove it, then you be able to use safestrap correctly.

Any other ideas.

[Q] Super One Click

I have rooted my captivate with super one click then i clicked "allow non market apps" and it runs but it does not change anything on my phone and i can not install non market apps. My phone is on 2.1.
Damn dude, that version of Android is ancient. Just update it to kb2 (the last official 2.2) or kk4 the official 2.3 update. Both allow this option in settings without the need to even root. Not to mention the performance boost you'll get from a newer version of Android.
I know its old but its stock so I thought I would flash it to cm7. But I need to install a few non market apps. Any help?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
What? Why do you need a any apps BEFORE you flash to cm7? Those will be erased when you flash a rom. So You're just spinning your wheels
I want to get rom manager free. I can only get the paid version in market. I bought the paid version and wants me to install the free version.
Sent from my LGL55C using xda premium
no need for rom manager at all that app really isnt very useful on galaxy devices, when it installs cwm all it does is download the attached update.zip and flashes it. everything else such as backing up and such can be done from within recovery itself.
grab this zip put it on the root of the sdcard and boot into recovery, go to reinstall packages twice and that will boot you into cwm. wherein you can flash cm7
Just update....
Download kies: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I897ZKAATT
will update you to kk4 2.3.5
then flash a custom kernel with odin... Then you can install cm7 or 9 or anything else you want
So I guess I wasted $6 buying the app.

You probably only bought the paid version license key...which still requires the core program(free). A lot of apps are like that such as Titanium Backup.

[Q] Stuck on Cm7

I recently installed CM7 following this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105) and had no troubles at all. I soon got bored of CM7 and went to try a CM9 ROM but when I went to install it via Clockwork it failed. I tried a few others and they all failed also. I even tried to re install the stock ROM and restore from my backup but nothing worked. I'm still stuck on CM7. Anyone got any ideas of what's going wrong?
Edit 1: For example when I attempt to re install the stock ROM I get an error message saying "E:can't open /sdcard/PG32IMG.zip (bad) Installation aborted"

install Roms from inc s development section following their instructions and you should be fine. Roms are usually not in pg32img format and are not made to be installed using that method. The guide you're following also does not mention using this filename to install Roms.
In fairness, at least you're stuck on a stable Rom.
Sent from my Incredible S using Tapatalk 2
Take pg32img.zip out of the root of your SD card.
Sent from my Incredible S using xda premium
Yup, delete the PG32IMG file from your SD card or try a new radio(for better performance). You can find it in the development forum thread.
Sent from my Incredible S using xda app-developers app
Just make sure it's not a froyo rom! You don't want to brick your phone.
Sent from my Incredible S using xda app-developers app
Froyo roms wont brick your phone, however there will be no radio support unless you flash a froyo radio which will brick your phone. After saying that I doubt in any case that there are no active links to any froyo anything for the incs any more.
