Hi!
I've been trying out different ROMS and most of them look pretty decent, but coming from a HTC MyTouch 4g, what I've missed the most is one theme/Rom that is actually NOT black/dark, but has "lighter"-background (ie., light greyish) menus and, particularly, light-background boxes for the menus that pop from the bottom when you press, well, the menu button (how do you call those boxes? I've had a lots of trouble trying to run a proper search).
Any pointers or recommendations on where to look for a theme like this would be much appreciated!

I'm working on a new theme called White Fire. It should be out in the next few days. All menus and popups are white. Check out the phoenix and Firefly Themes thread in the next few days.
Hey, sounds great! Looking forward to seeing it!
By the way, why is the overwhelming majority of (or all) themes black? White looks so much more modern

I am also working on a white theme called PISS...polar bear in snow storm.
In all seriousness, I believe that most themes are black in nature to conserve battery life.

Actually, if you followed Android OS then you would know black is actually more modern. Go get a G1 and look at how the 1.5/1.6 theme is, and that came first.
Black/dark is better for battery life on a SAMOLED. It's why Gingerbread is dark/black for the Nexus S.

it would appear that you're using the (W)VGA version with a WQVGA device. Try the (W)QVGA version in the first post.

PureBlack?
With all due respect (and genuinely mean that, cause I sure as hell haven't been able to create anything of the sorts... although I'm still trying) But for "PureBlack3" There sure is a lot of white and faded shades of gray rather than black. if it's call pure black, then make all the backgrounds in the menu's, and GUI in general, that are usually white... make those black, invert the font colors, and you'll be amazed just at how much batter life alone you will be saving people. The handset expends little to no power to display a black pixel, because there is simply nothing to display. Displaying a white pixel uses the most battery power. It's also really helpfull when usign the handset in a night time vehicular setting because you have less light distracting your vision.
Could maybe it be possible if you were so inclined, when creating PureBlack4, or perhaps a PureBlack3a, truly make it as pure black as possible.
I apologize if in anyway this post is insulting or derrogatory, for that was not my intention. Keep up the good work.

With respect, I disagree.
As an electrical engineer, I can confidently assure you that the color of a pixel has an unnoticeable effect on battery life. Black backgrounds would have no effect on battery life. The backlight is the battery-drainer, and the theme has nothing to do with that. Other than that, the way that WM is written, it's almost impossible to do what you're suggesting. My aim was to give a "mostly black" theme that the Microsoft set of themes were missing. I suppose your argument on the semantics of the theme name is correct, but I guess that's why I'm not an english major
Thanks for the suggestion!
Dear Cooks,
We love you dearly, and we respect and value all the sleepless ours you spend on making our phones look and work beautifully.
But I think I'll speak for a lot of people here (maybe even a majority?) if I dare to say that we are tired of the perpetual darkness of every manila theme out there.
I understand that phone is black, and it's all-business, and black looks classy... but every single rom out there is ever completely black, or very dark. It's seriously making me depressed.
I, for one, use my phone at work so much that I'm starting to worry about buttons/screen wearing out. I sync with exchange and I'm all pro-work, but I still want it to be colorful and bright.
Browsing through our awesome collection of ROMs in this thread I can't help but think how much it'd benefit from having some brightly-colored themes cooked-in in the ROMs Manila.
Here's hoping that this could be one of the ways we can have even more fun with our devices,
Me.
P.S: Here's an awesome alternative to the eternal darkness in our Manila. It's not finished yet, and it looks like developers could use a hand.

Nope, if you look at the official WM6.5 Theme thread, they are all dark/black. Some dark blue ones, and many poorly-designed/unfinished ones.
Besides, properly updating manila's design isn't that easy or reliable as changing WM's theme. A good, fully-integrated, fully-working bright theme is yet to be seen.

Don't think I did, at least I don't recall.
There are no complete colorful themes. Bright wallpapers don't count - you can't read Manila's text on anything that's not black or very dark. Open a calendar tab to see what I mean.
If I missed some, please point me to it, but I don't think I have.

Ok folks, my friend just got a hero and we were talking about why to root. I showed him several ROMs from this site and all the cool themes. We got to talking about how cool it would be if there was a STEAMPUNK themed ROM out there.
Here's the rub... I SUCK at theming.
I looked at the "buufed" rom and I like some of the style, but it's just not quite what I'm looking for. Props to the developer of that ROM because it's very thorough. This is the depth I'd like the Steampunk theme to have, but I just don't know how to do it. I've never built a ROM from the ground up, so I don't even know where to start.
Is anyone out there interested in a project like this, or could someone help me know what to do?
Thanks!

A steam punk theme would be pretty awesome
It has begun...
Ok... I have a great deal of respect for all you devs and themers out there. This is a beast. Time-consuming and not very forgiving...
I have started working on my steampunk theme. Here are some screenshots of what I've done so far. By no means is this a complete theme. I am using ZenHeroFX 2.0 by nfinitefx45 as my base. Credit to all artists/devs for their work.
I have themed the notification pull-down as well, but I don't have a screenie of that yet. Also, I themed the stock sense rosie, but (again) no screencap yet. I'm curious what y'all think...

Wow. You're a fast learner! Here are some clear notification bar icons that I made. You can use them so that the black squares wont show up around the icons in the notification bar. Just unzip the zip file, and you'll see the folders that the icons are supposed to go into. Good luck!

This is looking really good. Here's another theme I found a while back that has some of the same elements of csrom and your current build. I've never used it, but maybe something in there will help you, or maybe this dev can help you.

wow! this looks ... awesome! not usually an "extreme theme" kinda guy, but this I would use!
sadly though, I am using CM6 or AOSP, so would not actually end up using it, but I will be watching this thread for S&Gs anyway. the end result should look spectacular.
if I could add one "suggestion"? Get rid of the "branding" (SteamMod in big letters on the lockscreen?), I would think ppl would rather have something less intrusive in the look. I know I would. something clean and mechanical. just a IMHO kinda suggestion, great work regardless!

No problem-o... I appreciate the suggestion. Funny thing, too... I was using some of the mods from this on my daily use, and I thought "I need to take off that lettering 'cuz it's getting on my nerves." I'm just going to use it as the splash screen when sense loads rather than on the lock screen.
I have to take a break from this for a couple of days, but hopefully I can work on it some next week. Here's where I'm going to have most of my problems... DISTRIBUTION. I can theme my own phone b/c I know what I'm editing... I just am not sure how to make it so others can use it without bricking their phone. Any ideas? I hate Metamorph... was thinking more of a flashable zip? Or maybe just a themed version of a full ROM? ??

that's too bad, one theme I was really looking forward to.
and no, dont know diddle about theming.
Is there a reason most themes for Captivate are made of mostly 2 colors? I read once that back when LCDs were not-so-good, a sharp contrast made the screen look better and the text easier to read(or something to that effect).
But the screen on the Galaxy S is very, very nice. So why the lack of color options? Is it a popular styling? Emulation of something more popular? Lack of creativity? Power consumption?
I'm not saying all of the themes available are like this. I've used PaulDiddy's theme in the past, and I loved it. It really showed off the screen and gave everything on it some life. Looking through the offerings that come with ROMs, their custom replacement themes, and the Themes subforum, I'd say the majority of themes offered exhibit this duo-chromatic characteristic, but in the I9000 theme directory thread, many of the themes are colorful, some to an extreme. But getting these themes to work with Captivate ROMs seems to involve just as much work as making the theme itself.
This is not meant to be a rant. I would like to know if I'm missing something about black+a color themes, or some sort of reasoning to the trend. Then again, if I'm completely off base and there are, in fact, more color themes than I'm seeing, then by all means, let me know. I'd far prefer that to a 'that's the way it is, get used to it'-type answer.
My best answer would be because people like consistency. The background one color with the text and other items another color. Too many colors and it gets confusing quickly.
Also with the type of screen we have, black as a background uses less power so that is the norm
WTF are you talking about? There are themes for the captivate in a multitude of colors.
There is one for mosaic (an earlier version as we just updated the ROM and haven't ported the themes yet) called rainbow bright. It is rainbow colored. ROYGBIV.
Not to mention all the other themes we have.
And this is just speaking of one ROM.
Take a look at fusion, that is a HEAVILY themed ROM...
Idk where you have been looking where all you see is black and white.

Hi all,
I'm coming from and SGSII and I'm in the process of trying to setup my One how I like it. There's a few things troubling me though.
-The blacks of the screen don't seem especially black and it seems there's no way to adjust the contrast. The whole screen seems a bit flat/grey
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
-I'd like the notification bar to be black
-On the SII I have gps switched off but weather apps still work, with the HTC gps has to be on.
-I'm going to have to root this phone to get adfree aren't?
I'm using nova launcher so a lot of things are similar but those things above are really bugging me. I've googled all of them and had no luck so let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thanks.
I didn't read your whole post but to get white text on black you are going to have to go with an inverted Rom, like d3rp or 42One I am sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Thanks, I might hold off on rooting for a while.
The main thing I wanted to check was that I wasn't missing an obvious settings and that the screen was working properly, it's VERY flat and grey compared to my SII.
Overall it's doing a good job but the screen is going to have to take some getting used to.

This is the difference between AMOLED and LCD. The contrast on the One is pretty much the best available on a phone LCD, but it is still an LCD, and cannot match the black levels of AMOLED.
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
The menus on the SII are white on black because white is a very expensive color to display, battery-wise, on an AMOLED screen. Inverted roms, or themes, will fix this for you.
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
Depends on the app you're using. If you're speaking about within Sense (settings, app drawer, etc) then yeah I guess, but I'm not sure why you would need the long scrolling in such short lists.
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
Uninstall/disable them via settings>apps or kill them with an app.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated. Much as I feared the about the screen. It's a shame, I do really like OLED. Those are the two big things now, the screen and lack of centre button. It's stupid because most apps now have a black bar at the bottom which takes up about 10% of the screen for the 'options' button. A button would be much better. If it had those two things it would be the perfect phone in my eyes.
Makes sense about the menus, I checked out the 42One rom and it looks pretty good. I spent yesterday getting everything set up so I'm going to wait to root and flash.
The scroll/flick behaviour is a bit different but some lists do have a 'mega-scroll' so that was me I guess, I'd still prefer it if it was a bit looser.
I found the only option was to disable certain apps, I guess I won't be able to get into removing stuff until I root the phone.
Maybe I should have said i don't like the stock icons, I still prefer the SII one but have since downloaded some icon packs so we're all good there.
On my journeys I saw someone had written a little program to guide you through rooting your phone so I'll have to find that again. I'd also like to backup my stock setup in case of warranty issues further down the line.
Thanks again.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

The HTC logo doesn't have a capacitive sensor, the "logo button" feature actually uses the first row of pixels immediately above the logo as a button.
Not trying to attack anyone here, just want to make sure that the information is explained a bit more.

Yep, it's the tradeoff you made when you picked LCD.
If its any consolation, displaying white on your S2 actually caused the display consumption to go up drastically (sometimes double the power required) while on LCD the screen uses a much more consistent amount of power. The whites on your One -should- appear as truer whites, while yes, the black will be more washed out.

Useful to know, thanks!
Thanks for the input, being brand new to HTC I'm still learning what's available.
Ideally I like Nova so I'd like to keep that. I'd like the general menus to be white text on black BG, I can clean things out with Titanium and stop ads with adfree.
From what I can tell I'm going to need to root the phone and then install a rom.
Are there 'pre-optimized' roms? Are there any Roms which are basically stock except for the colour flip? Can I get 4.3 in there as well? That middle button would be great too. My SII came with swype, I miss that.
I've found instructions on rooting but a little unsure which rom to go for, konfuzion's suggestion of 42One looks ok but I don't know what's out there, supported and up to date.
If you have any more thoughts they're always welcome
I'm gonna need some help on this guys.
I'm in the UK on the EE network, can I download any rom or do I need a specific 'EE' one?
Do I need a rom if I just want superuser privileges and a reversed/inverted menu? (also be able to install titanium backup and adfree)
I think I can handle the rest of it.
Thanks.
Well you most likely have a gsm one so you wouldn't want to flash anything in the sprint one section. And seeing as your gsm i believe there are a few roms over there that are 4.3
