Gingerbread for Telus Motorola Milestone coming in the Spring - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

Wanted to let everyone know that Telus has announced that the Milestone will be getting Gingerbread 2.3 in the Spring. Here is the article from Phandroid:
http://phandroid.com/2011/03/15/des...g-on-telus-more-androids-slated-for-upgrades/
Although I no longer have a Milestone, mine died recently and have upgraded to a Droid 2 Global, I wanted to inform ya'll about the news. Hopefully this pans out and makes the Milestone which I loved (except for the locked bootloader) even better.

This spring is going to be over!

Seems the phandroid article is misleading. Mobilesyrup (the source) never actually claims Telus is announcing a Gingerbread update for the Milestone. Instead, they just update saying that Froyo will be out "very soon".

Thats too bad. Bummer. Hopeful that article was true. Doubt Moto will release Gingerbread for Milestone. But to be honest, I loved Cyanogenmod 6 for my Milestone. It was awesome.

It's from the article title: "Desire, Desire HD & Milestone to Get Gingerbread in Spring on Telus"

Oh, that's beautiful.
The title contradicts the article.. yep.. that's modern day journalism for ya

Moto did officially announce that the Milestone will NOT get Gingerbread...
We're coming up to the end of Q1 - Where's my 2.2 update?
@Kent
There will not be an upgrade to Gingerbread for Milestone A853.

[Q] Will Froyo releases be leaked ?

Why are samsung leaking these to test, The FroYo FW must be into a good stage of development by now, I am unsure why we are 'beta testing' this and hoping for FroYo to be released working well straight off the bat,
Do you guys think we will get FroYo releases before it is officially released? I mean all these firmwares we are testing will be made into one that gets officially released.

Please think before you post a thread, the title generated quite a few reports !

I nearly fell from chair.
IF they would release thier Froyo as beta to this forum - they could get beta feedback by reading about bugs posted by us AND does not have to deal with the consequences we know how to reflash - "normal" users dont.
So Win Win for both.
Yeah, you really should have titled the thread as a question. As worded, it makes folks think it's actually happened.

I fired up a google search and i found a lot of hits about a froyo alpha on a galaxy spica. Maybe some things got mixed up.
Yep, can't find anything about Froyo alphas or leaks for the Galaxy S, just for some of the older Galaxy phones.
I think we Android owners are a fairly impatient bunch.
In the time it's taken for the iPhone to go from 3.0 to 4.0, Android has had:
- 1.6 Donut
- 2.0 / 2.1 Eclair
- 2.2 Froyo
The phone manufacturers must have a heart attack every time a new version of Android is released and their handset owners immediately begin screaming for it...
Luckily the Galaxy S is the flagship of Samsung which they intend to sell 10 million of, so chances are we'll be seeing good support and the stream of beta firmwares shows they're not sitting still.
Froyo has been confirmed for August in Korea, and most likely September in international markets.
We've got to be patient and remember the Nexus One is still the ONLY Android phone that has received an official Froyo update as of yet. Even the Desire, EVO 4G, Droid, Incredible and Droid X are still on the waiting list.
From the sounds of it August-October will be the time the various handset manufacturers will be rolling out their Froyo updates.

Well they don't do themselves any favours by launching a new phone every couple of weeks and insisting on putting their own UI on top of Android.

Possibly but I think I have to go with the sceptic masses here that say samsung support isn't good in longterm and so I guess they won't do that. Unless ofc gingerbread is going to bring the massive UI update that vanilla android so desperately needs for usablity and samsung decides that touchwiy isnt necessary anymore.

There are developers assigned to port CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (T-Mobile US version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729364
Unfortunately, looking at Wes Garner's Twitter, he seems rather more keen on the Slide than the Vibrant:
I like the slide better
@wesgarner so does that mean your gonna keep developing for the slide?
@XJRodzx probably more for it than the vibrant

So don't know how that's necessarily going to work out. The intention is there, though, anyway - hope it's still in progress!
I have doubts with Gingerbread...from what we know so far, it's supposed to have a (MUCH NEEDED!) UI overhaul based around the Gallery's sexy look.
If a phone is launched with a certain interface, chances are the manufacturer probably wouldn't be keen on releasing an update that changes everything because of the issue with it being different to what the buyer paid for. Basically, it changes the product, and the picture on the box is no longer what you've bought. It's all well and good with something like Eclair to Froyo since it's largely just performance improvements and some new features rather than an overhaul.
If anything, I think Samsung would be more likely to release a new version of the Galaxy S at Gingerbread's launch. Much like it's doubtful the HTC Desire / Evo 4G / Incredible will get Gingerbread updates. Instead, HTC will probably have new devices ready for the new interface.
The Nexus One is the only current device I believe has a chance of Gingerbread, mainly because it's the 'official' Google phone and has been promoted and sold as a developer phone. They'll be wanting some nice apps ready for Gingerbread when it launches which will obviously need to be in development before Gingerbread-equipped phones launch.

yeah, but it kind of is. Same software, different drivers. And the reality seems to be to me (Sorry if I'm wrong) that the software can be ported easily from one to the other, and the 2.1 drivers and bootloader just need to be updated for the 2.2 os and kernel.
Call me a conspiracy theorist - but I still think that Moto's dragging their feet because the Milestone 2 is almost exactly the same phone as the Milestone - it just has 2.2, which, conveniently Milestone owners can't upgrade to themselves.

Is there any evidence that the Bionic is getting it after the RAZR? I know that kind of makes sense considering they very clearly stated that the RAZR is getting it and I'd imagine a lot of buyers are getting it under that assumption, but it would be kind of cool if the same or a close release date.
You all do realize that between the vendors and the providers, those projections rarely mean anything, right? It'll also be interesting to see how Verizon deals with an OS that will allow you to remove bloatware without even having root privileges.

It really doesn't matter if Verizon approved ICS for the Bionic or not. By the time Razr receives the update the Devs will have everything need for a stable port to the Bionic. I don't think the Thunderbolt will get ICS since HTC is still working on it's successor "Vigor" will likely receive it first.
Cool thing about this is that we know it runs well on TI SoC's so performance should be awesome whether it comes from CM or from an official update. I for one hope for CM!
I can't remember the time frame it took CM to get from froyo to gingerbread.
I think if the bionic didn't get icecream sandwich, Motorola would have things to worry about, like a bunch of disgruntled customers who may never purchase another Motorola again. By the time we get it, Google may be announce Cheeseburger(joke name for next version )

good news but sounds a little too good to be true imo.

The fact that the Bionic is going to get ICS is old news. There are several threads about it already.
This thread is about ICS 6 weeks after release, which has NOT been confirmed yet, depending on how you wish to interpret the latest update on the original post::
http://androidandme.com/2011/10/new...-to-ice-cream-sandwich-6-weeks-after-release/
To me it sounds like all they are doing is confirming, once again, that the Bionic is going to get ICS which we've known about for a little while now, but there isn't a set date.
Basically, what I'm saying, is there is no news here. Just a misinterpretation from androidandme which has spawned dozens of forum posts and several other websites have linked to this article claiming the same incorrect statement that dates are confirmed.

Ehhh I'm going to say that we'll see it sometime AROUND the 6 week mark...but probably later. I don't want to doubt Motorola, but I highly doubt they'll have a build up within 6 weeks...they said next year for the RAZR, there isn't a huge difference between it and the Bionic. But I wouldn't also be surprised if Motorola was planning on using the Bionic as a test platform so they get it right on the RAZR...fine by me, if they screw it up, someone else will get a better custom ROM out (and probably will even if they do it right anyways lol)
ics
wonder what it would look like with blur ui
hmmm, I'm happy to see that they are pushing ICS, but I worry about how long it will take them to get it to the devices they listed...

New leaked dates for ICS

So I just found a leaked screen shot of Verizon's upgrade schedule to ICS!
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/04/verizon-ic-update-schedule-leaked/
So the HTC Rezound should get the OTA next week on May 9th. The RAZR and RAZR MAXX will be getting the OTA in three weeks. But no mention of the Bionic... Oh yea, they decided to give us the .904 update while they finalized ICS for the newer phones. We just got shafted again.
Then again, its tough to know what is actually going on because they have to keep everything confidential. I doubt this would be case but if VZW and MOTO were having issues with ICS on the Bionic, I would have no problem giving them more time to make it right. But from what we've seen, it doesn't appear to be that innocent.
You do realize that we are a low priority because the phone isn't selling well, right? RAZR's the front-runner, making it a priority. We'll get ours by July, if we're lucky.
And yes, I am being a little pessimistic, but Motorola and Verizon need to step up their game already. Moto's making too many devices and Verizon's forcing bloat too much. That's what is slowing us down.
re
I don't understand what is really taking that long. Development will continue on the latest and greatest but that doesn't mean we should get the shaft. I picked the bionic over the thunderbolt because I like the slightly thinner phone and longer screen even though it cost more.didn't think I would be buying a dead phone in terms of development. I should have just got the razr
I have Rooted 904 update Safestrap dual boot eclipse 2.2
My view is the Bionic is a phone they would prefer to forget. The Razrs are the hot phones so they get the priority. Maybe I woukd complain much more without ICS ROMs available.
It's interesting that on Moto's site the RAZR's are all listed as ICS upgradeable but the Bionic is not.??

Guys why is this even a topic. It's been confirmed we are getting official ICS by several sources along with moto. The ICS source code was released a little over a month ago, that helped out the devs. We have a solid device for the price and we have devs good enough to keep us happy and get us through until mid to late summer when we get the real thing.
ICS source was released 6 months ago. That doesn't help matters since we don't have an official release, an unlocked bootloader, or a real ICS kernel, however.
