Like lets say some people didnt pay there phone bill and i wanted to grab a prepaid t mobile sim card (already tested and it let me text and call) but would flashing different roms conflict with it? would i have to go and get the service books every time?
Not sure if it's already unlocked, but you'll have to have it unlocked first. If it's already working different prepaid SIMs though, you should be all good.
Yeah i used the app from the market and it worked but i heard you cant get 3g and stuff. Im just wondering if its worth it. I cant give up my cappy

Well I'm using a pre-paid SIM from another carrier (in another country!) and it works perfectly well.

Well, I'm using the Captivate in another country on a local carrier. Lol. It will work. But not too sure if the Captivate supports t mobile's 3g band.

Anyone on Rogers managed to get this to work? I miss not being able to see the name of the person/company who is calling me.

From what I understood, we need to activate ro.ril.enable.cnap=1 in build.prop.
I tried that, no go (CM7 RC2)
Anyone have any other idea?

Yeah, that doesn't work on a stock ROM either. There's obviously something we are missing.

I would also love to have this. The information must be being sent TO the phones, right? There must be a way.
There's gotta be a way indeed. But alas, it's way beyond my expertise
Some Android phones do support CNAP. So it must be a problem with the software/radio.
Any guru volunteering to help out?
This was a big "WTF, seriously?" for me when I got my Nexus One after having a Nokia N95 for years where this worked perfectly. I've gotten used to it, but I'd love to have the name display again.
Do other carriers do this? People I know using Bell or Telus were surprised or even didn't believe me when I said I used to get name display with my N95, which suggests maybe they don't. Anyone know how common it is for carriers to send the name? I've been with Rogers for over 10 years now and just figured it was a standard thing like with landlines.
I had my SE W810i (best non-smartphone by far) and it worked perfectly. Since then, tried many phones, none of them supported CNAP. Had a nokia that would support it but wouldn't keep it in the call list. Pretty useless when I got missed calls.
I know some android phones do support CNAP. So this is entirely possible. We just need one of the gurus to figure out what has to be done!
I think it has something to do with this file : /data/misc/rild_ril.cnap

I believe Rogers is the only Canadian carrier that offers CNAP/name-display.
I remember the difficulties we had in trying to get it to work on Windows Mobile devices. There was a work-around, but it required , but it required using a specific file (rilphone.dll) from a Rogers ROM for the same/similar device... Maybe we need the /data/misc/rild_ril.cnap from a Rogers ROM for a similar device...
If I'm not mistaken, the Rogers Samsung Galaxy supports CNAP.

Hey, does anybody know a way to use an android phone without a data plan? I know you can disable data in wireless network settings but then you can't receive mms. Does anybody know a way to do this?

This sure is one confusing thread.
If this is a question about having an iPhone on a plan without data (it is... right?), then I have no idea. I'm assuming it's not unlocked and is on AT&T? I would think they require a data plan for iPhones, but I really have no idea.

It has nothing to do with an iphone, thats why I didn't bring it up in the first place. Its just getting android working using only wifi for data, but leaving the data corrected to 3g so mms will work

OK, so you want an Android phone to not be on a data plan, and rely on wi-fi for that stuff, but still have it connect to 3G for MMS? No, that probably would not be really feasible at all, unless someone can correct me..

Also, if it is an iPhone (we are talking about an iPhone here, right? Running 2.2 or something? I am still confused..), it does matter to know that, since I do not think AT&T allows iPhones on a data-less package anyway.

First of all, not the point
Second. My friend does have a data less iphone
See what happens right now is when he turns his iphone on (the iphone OS) a little pop up shows up and says that he does not have a data plan and data will not be used. But it still connects to the 3g network, and he can get mms.
I was asking if there was a way to do that in Android, thats all. Even if its not as simple as the iphone os. Just that it uses wifi when its needs data access.

So, here's a way you can get FREE wifi tethering/mobile hotspot on your Droid Bionic so you don't have to pay Verizon twice for the same internet you are already paying for. I don't know why Verizon would block this feature especially when you consider that there's a 2GB cap on your mobile internet usage anyways.
<MOD EDIT>
We don't have a 2GB cap. I've been over 2GB's a month for almost a year without any issues.

Hello
Just put my N1 back to Gingerbread 2.3.6 and now I cannot make or receive calls or send messages. My sim card is working fine because I have taken it out of my N1 and have used it in my other back up phone with no trouble. I have also taken my son sim card out of his phone and put it into my N1 and still get the same thing.
When the sim card is in the N1 and the phone boots up, it says Emergency calls only up in the notification area. When I try to go to the key pad, and dial a number, I get an error message stating Mobile Network Not Available. Not sure why this is. My account is up to date and is registered on the network according to ATT when I call them.
Anyone who can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate. Thank you so much.

i dont kn ow what he means... it is the same radio. the link you posted is the right thing you need to flash. if you followed the directions and the bootloader actually flashed it, i dont see how there can be any problems, i think maybe a hardware issue? try cleaning the Sim slot or something?
You might have posted the same with a tiny bit less useless headline.
First question: do you have TMO or AT&T N1 version?
In any case, disregard the "wrong radio" answer, it's wrong. The radios are the same. The APNs are also not the culprit, so disregard that too. The phone doesn't lie - you don't have cellular connection, and you need to find the reason for it.

There are no different radio firmwares for AT&T and T-Mobile to flash, they use exactly the same firmware. And don't start arguing, because you're wrong. Maybe you should check out the wiki first..
The only difference between the two are the radio frequencies they use, but that has nothing to do with firmware version (in case of our Nexus One).

Nah i'm just kiddin you bro. But i srsly read somewhere that there was radio difference.
There isn't, as there aren't different radios (baseband builds) to begin with. The same OTA/PASSIMG firmware update applies to both TMO and AT&T phones in exactly the same way, and this firmware contains baseband update - directly from Google. So you won't find any provider-specific radios. The only thing is that Korean N1 has a newer radio, since it had a newer build release. And this radio also works for both.
