[Q] Text message time stamp - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I'm a complete newbie to all things Android and Nexus One. I've literally just taken the plunge into flashing the CM7-RC2 ROM and so far it's awesome.
I've been having an issue with with text messages displaying the time when you turn your phone on even when I had 2.2.1. I found a few threads but no answers whether it is possible to change, all of my previous phones worked like that.
So, if you turn your phone off at 1:00 and someone sends you a message at 1:05 then you turn your phone back on at 1:10 the text message time is displayed as 1:10. I'm using Handcent but it does the same with the default messaging app. Doing a lot of travelling in an airplane etc. means this will happen regularly - I would really like to know the real time when the messages were sent.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

You could try something like this: http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-timestamper-fix/com.reptilesoft.stamper
I have the same problem (but I don't use any app to fix it)... It should be an "Android" (any version) problem, not a Nexus One problem.

The default messaging app in CM7 has an option for this in its settings: Use original timestamps

Thanks, this app worked to some extent but took some time to readjust the times, even after fiddling the settings. However, it's better than nothing.

I must have overlooked this setting in CM7... However, I've tried it and while the messages now aren't stamped with the time the phone was turned on... They are 10 hours behind. Which is fixed with the "time adjustment offset" in either Handcent or "GO SMS". I don't understand why it is not picking up the time zone set in the phone. I've tried both "Automatic" and having the time/time zone set manually, both methods don't do anything to the time stamp on the text. Must mean if you have "Use original timestamps" selected then the mobile network itself has to have the correct time? Interesting but annoying issue.

[Q] Does your phone ever mix up contacts (when receiving sms)?

Something really odd just happened.
I got a text from my buddy Aaron.
Opened up my SMS, and it showed another contact's picture and phone number when looking at the thread. but when I went back to the list of sms threads, it would show Aaron's phone number (not connected to his contact, no picture, no name etc)...
If I clicked on it and went back into the thread, again another contacts name and phone number and picture
wtf ?!?!
So I deleted the sms thread. Went into contacts, and swiped left on Aaron's contact to text him, when in the sms typing area, it only shows his phone number and fails to connect his number to his actual contact.
When I call Aaron from my contacts though, it does show his picture ...
is this sort of thing a common occurance ?
All my contacts are sync'd with exchange (corporate) and most of them are linked to facebook.
I've got no contacts on my sim, or entered into the phone memory itself.
I also noticed that when using a 3rd party sms app, the texts don't get linked up to the contacts, so it would only show the numbers.

i have not seen the error yet
but now that i know, i might not be surprised if it does happens
wow .. honestly that sort of thing is pretty unacceptable on any phone..
This happened to me yesterday! Any ideas on what causes it?
Ya i ve d same problm. anything can be done abt this?
This has been discussed many times before, its generally down to having other SMS applications on your device, ie Handscent.
this happened when i coded my own SMS app, left it installed on my phone for a few days and open the conversation to my mate and had all the msgs from my girlfriend in it...
Lol.. It actually happened to me a couple of time. Thankfully it solves itself when I hit the back button
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
it happens me several times on 2 of 4 galaxys. this is totaly unacceptable offcourse. if this isnt fixed on froyo I have a galaxy for sale.
Which firmwares, and is this firmware you are using a final version?

It does it for me quite regularly, and I've never installed any other SMS apps. Bog standard JF3, never flashed, nothing.
It was also one of the first things my friend mentioned to me about his new Galaxy S, which hadn't even had a single app of any kind downloaded at the time.
Believe me, it's very weird to have a text apparently from your best male friend telling you how much they love you after the phone gets the name confused with your girlfriend.
Weeeeirdness.
guys, you do know this issue is just a SMS software bug eh?
have you guys tried using ChompSMS (freebie)
that will prevent the problem of mixing contacts
me had this problem before but not anymore when i flash the i9000ZSJP2 firmware..... try it...
SMS problem yes, but Mail too!
I have had this problem with SMS a couple of times, but more serious and more frequent: Exchange mail mixes up, I get maibodies under wrong subject! I am using standard SGS Exchange client. Any other seen this?

Yup it sure is and i can confirm it on the firmware jpjg8
iv been recieving a lot of sms's and on the notification it gives me some random contact name but once opened it correctly goes back to the original sender with the text. i havn't tried using a diff sms app as im pretty happy with the stock 1 in use.
as for a fix , i found out that a big list of contacts and sms's do confuse the phone and try as much as possible to keep it as small as possible but id love to keep those sms's / mms's , so still no real fix T_T
bump .. me also haveing the same problem. contacts name in the notification is displayed wrong ..but it corrects itself when i open the sms.
using another app solved it
i switch to use Handcent SMS, much better than ChompSMS
i never really noticed if there was a problem with SMS getting mixed up
must have been an older bug on the older firmwares
I Have the same problem as the two people below.
I'll get a new text message, and it will show up on the notifications bar as from some random person, and i'll get another text from the same person and the notification will show another random name. They seem to be names of people that have previously sent me a message, but it is quite strange... It only started happening recently, so maybe it is an app or something conflicting?
The only things that come to mind are the LauncherPro messaging widget that i've been putting on one of my homescreens.
I'm running
Firmware 2.1-upadate1
I9000UGJH2
ECLAIR.UGJH2
rooted and running one click lag fix
also running trillian in the background, as well as beautiful widgets wheather.
can you guys post some info on what you are running so that maybe we can find a cause for this?

I experience the same on my desire z with htc's default app.
Is the a solution for this?
I find custom flashing and limiting the number of contacts ridiculously lame - no offence, but these bare not $10 devices
I had this bug on 2.1. I had no other text app installed so put it down to an eclair/rom version bug. Mine would also text the wrong people if it had got the contacts mixed. Best fix for me was a reboot.
I'm on Froyo now and no sign of it so far......fingers crossed
This very same thing is happening to me now. Called my carrier but they couldn't help. Hoping to find a solution here.

[Q] Cognition v2.3b6 SMS Order Problem

I have a rooted i896 running Cognition v2.3b6. Now by default, when I used the sms app, the time listed for text messages that i receive are 5 hours in the past (at 945pm i received an sms, but the time listed under the text was 445). Because when I my text messages that are sent with the proper time, so in the text message thread my text messages are always first and my recipients texts appear always before in the thread.
I what I didnt was I changed my time zone to account for the 5 hour gap.
So after I did this, most of the text message appear in order except for messages that are sent/received in the same minute. For texts send during the same minute, my sent always appear after even if it is sent before.
I read on these forums that this is a problem with time stamping of the text from the carrier or something, but there was not explanation on how to fix this.
Is anyone else having this problem and found out a way to fix it?

You can download an app called "Sms Time Fix" and put it to adjust by 5 hours. You can also download "Handcent" or another 3rd party messaging app and the time will be correct.
I had a very similar problem. After i got my phone unbricked and loaded the latest version of cognition onto the phone the timestanps were five hours off. I am now using handcent and have no probles whatsoever with the timestamps.
Don't forget to go into tibu and "freeze" your original sms program that came stock with the phone.

3rd Party Applications - SMS incoming timestamp delay

I've scoured the forums for an answer but all of these seemed to be pointing to the actual stock SMS app or another like Handcent.
What I'm talking about is that on third party applications that send SMS data to a server, the timestamp (apparently for all motorola phones) is delayed on applications such as:
DeskSMS
Web Desktop
LazyDroid
I'm experiencing this problem. Although on texting applications on the phone the timestamp is correct, on these third party applications that send information to my computer the time is around 4-5 hours behind.
Any theories/fixes? I have a feeling the normal time fix app won't work for this...
It's a known problem for all text messaging functions (phone and tied to PC). It has to do with how the date codes are stored in the text message database (which all SMS programs use). If you use SMS Backup and Restore to backup, then view your messages, all your received would be a few hours older.
On the phone, Go SMS works just fine (probably reads and writes to the database itself, instead of going through Motorola's crappy SMS programming). Dunno about the PC end. Although if you use LazyDroid and GO SMS at the same time, you'll get two copies of the same message: correct and old dated. Not the best workaround, but it's something.
Technically speaking, the Motorola coding (with Stock and apparently Handcent use to interface with the database) causes the date to be written as if your local current time IS the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT 0). When another program reads the code without using the Motorola programming, it tries to convert the
"GMT" to your time zone. So for me on the East Coast of the US, I'm on GMT-5. Add a difference of 1 for Daylights savings time in the US, and my messages are 4 hours old.
I don't have any issues. I get texts basically instantly from chrome to phone as well with the stock messaging services.

i'm going to bump this because I have a weird issue.
i use GO SMS Pro and wanted to use Light Flow to control the LED on the device. When you disable GO SMS native notification settings and uncheck the 'block other notifications' it allows the Light Flow controls to work, but I see the issue where all the received timestamps are 5 hours behind (I'm in the eastern time zone). However, if i do check the 'block other notifications' it works fine, but Light Flow blocks all use of the LED for text messaging. Kind of annoying since I don't see how Light Flow can reveal this bug, but after uninstalling the issue goes away.

I'd assume you do not use your phone on Verizon. Anyways - there is an app on the market called SMS Time Fix. I think it can solve your issue without having to replace standard SMS client.
I was using go sms for like 14 hrs. Deleted it, tho. It was nice to theme it but for some reason it kept reverting my theme to the default and or would revert some aspects of it while keeping others.
Ill just wait for a rom, I don't really have that big of an issue with the stock app.

Not sure if you're on a Droid3, but my SMS Time Fix doesn't work all the time on my Bell XT860 (running on Rogers). How has your experience been? Most of the time it gets the right timestamp, but sometimes it doesn't. Is there any way I can tell if the task manager is killing the app or...?

I am indeed using Bell XT860 on Rogers. SMS timestamp fix works fine for me. Without it installed messages are stamped with GMT time.
Beside installing it you need to open it, set it active (it is disabled by default) and choose method to correct time (adjustment method) - select top one - Time zone.

[Q] Multiple SMS threads with same contact

I have an issue that comes up randomly. I noticed that sometimes when i send or receive a text message that there is a chance that it will create a new thread. So basically i have 2 ongoing text message threads with some of my contacts. This happens often when creating a new message, sometimes when i receive a reply, and rarely (but still happens) when replying to a thread. Replying to a thread is the weirdest one because i type and hit send and suddenly all the messages disappear as it created a new thread, or all the messages change since it threw me into the other ongoing thread.
Is this supposed to be a feature? At first I thought it dealt with a setting I saw where after 3 minutes it can stop grouping messages or something like that. I can't seem to find the option now. But i use GO SMS Pro and saw this 'bug' (as i see it) before i installed GO and now the issue is mirrored both in GO and the native android text messaging app. Is there any way to turn this off? I just want all my texts for one contact in one thread in the order they were sent/received.
I haven't encountered this, but I installed handcent the first day I had my phone and haven't looked back.
sent from my ROOTED DROID3 from the XDA app
I remember reading about someone else having this same problem, never happened to me tho.
Yeah like i said i dont think its the 3rd party app since i see the same exact thing in the native app. I'm worried about rooting and freezing the service before i can fix it, for now anything that goes wrong i can switch back and forth to try and trouble shoot or try and find the root cause. do the 3rd party apps just pull info from the native android app or do they receive the messages separately?
I had this problem. Turns out somehow the phone number was copied and it was under mobile and home. There was a sms thread for the home and a thread for the mobile but since they were the same number it took me a while to figure out. Hope that helps. Deleting one of the numbers will stop it. At least it did for me

I have this issue occasionally too. Although I noticed that the number format was different. One would include country code and the other thread was just area code and number

Same issue here, with the stock app, with just one person.
I can only find one iteration of the number so I have no idea how to remedy it.

Duplicate/Out of sync texts

I've noticed that I get a lot of duplicate texts or they are out of sync when coming in and just curious if anyone else is seeing this?
I'm currently on my own ROM but noticed this on full stock as well.

+1 on duplicate texts. Also noticed when I get a reply in the same minute it lists above the original text

Just an AT&T thing, methinks.
I've always had this, even when I was back on the LG Shine.
Same here. What SMS app are you all using? Go SMS here
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I usally get duplicates when I'm texting someone using a iPhone, out of sync happens when your having a fast paced text convo , notice it mostly happens texting a blackberry, with that said I don't have the sync issue much anymore but 6 months ago when everyone still had a bb it was out of control
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA App
It happened most when it's within same minute but there's plenty of times where it could be 5 minutes between and I'll get duplicate texts that come in. It's pretty annoying. And I'm just using stock messaging app.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I'm on the Rogers network here in Canada and I have noticed that as well. I thought maybe it was just the provider, but it may be a system issue. I'm just using the stock messages app that comes with the ROM. I have chompSMS installed as it sorts the message better than the stock app.
There's no fix for this yet, I've searched already. I think is related to the new pta lte apn since I didn't have the problem before on hspa...
Sent from my HTC Vivid via Tapatalk
I have the same issue, but I've had it since I got the Vivid back in November. I just assumed it was an AT&T network issue, but I never had that problem before with other phones. Hearing that it happens with the Raider in Canada makes me wonder if it's something in the phone itself and the way it pulls messages from the network.
I'm not 100% sure of this (just a hunch) but I'm wondering if it has something to do with the NTP servers that HTC has the device set to sync with to get the time (or the method that it gets the current time from the cell network).
It would appear that the clock is just a few seconds behind everyone else's...
I suppose I'll take a look at it here shortly, since this has been happening to me since day 0 of owning this phone and it's quite annoying...
try using this to assign the correct time for w when the messages come through
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-time-fix/com.mattprecious.smsfix
Yeah, Ive noticed the exact same thing. If you get a message in the same minute as the one you sent it puts the new message you received above the one you sent. Ive also noticed duplicate messages from people as well, thought it was just them, but when it was mentioned about the duplicate messages coming from iPhone users, that sounds right. Does anyone see any fixes coming anytime soon? Forgot to mention that im completely stock right now, using the stock SMS app. Haven't unlocked the bootloader, rooted, or put a custom rom on it yet.
try using the link from the above post, let me know if you have any success
This issue has been driving me nuts. Sometimes I get the same text three times in a row. And sometimes every single text I get is duplicated. I have unlimited texts, but it's annoying and it shouldn't happen. I'm using stock ROM and stock messaging app and I seriously doubt any other app will resolve this. It's either something specific to Sense, or it's the LTE.
Either way, I wish they would fix it. If I didn't like the phone so much, I would have taken it back over this.

If you simply follow the link, you will see that it is a timing correction app. Not an alternate messaging app.
All "messaging" app's on android utilize the same central database for text message storage, this app runs in the background and detects incomming messages, it then corrects the time on the message as it comes in to reflect the local time on the device, therefor correcting time sync issues. It is a common problem for many mobile devices and there are many apps that resolve the same issue.
This has happened on a large number of devices for a very long time. The root cause is often the time servers in use by either the sending or recieving ISP. The problem can be intermittant as often service providers utilize multiple servers operating in tandem, this same tandem issue can also cause the mutlple messages.
Please take my advice and try the app & hit the thanks button if it helps you

Ive been using the app for a little while now, and it seems to have fixed the problem. All my messages have been in the correct order so far. Is this app supposed to fix the duplicate text problem too or just the issue with the time stamp? I havent gotten any duplicate text since I started using it, but I wasnt sure if it was because of the app or if Ive just been lucky.
I have been having the same problem as this as well. It's super annoying, especially since I tend to have fast paced conversations, so my texts are always out of order. And every time I get a duplicate text message, my phone vibrates or rings again, which is really irritating since there isn't actually a new message.
I noticed this happened on the stock messaging app, and a while ago I switched to Go SMS. I didn't seem to have nearly as many problems with texts being out of order or receiving duplicate texts. In fact, it seemed to go away almost completely with Go SMS. But while using Go SMS, my friends told me that about every 3 text messages, they would receive the same text from me anywhere from 2 to 6 times. That was ridiculous! I loved Go SMS, but I had to switch back to stock because of the repeated text sending, even though now I have to deal with the duplicates on my end.

I beleive that it identifies incomming messages and drops the text if it is a duplicate, but you would need to contact the developer, I'm just a google search user
