Yesterday I got my NC, I am living in France so have to order it from amazon, takes about 5 days.
1st thing I notice it is much heavier than my sony PRS600, one hand holding is tough for me, for some reasons I need all my handheld dev to be light weight as much as possible, NC is however acceptable.
Screen is great, this is the main reason I pick it, NC doesn't disappoint me, and touch is very sensitive and accurate.
hardware, this isn't much to say, for that price I guess it's a great deal. The issues are buttons and SD slot, no classic android hardware buttons really troubles me after rooting, and which genius come out with that SD slot design?
OS, sort of sucks, don't know it's the 2.1's problem or what, everything is a bit slow and lag, I hope 2.2 will fix them abit like your guys said, I really do.
software: as a ereader it's original softwares work fine, reading is good, pdf is a bit lag, video play back is good, but 720p video can only play smoothy in MP4 format, only problem is my comic books don't works on NC.I guess I need find a good app for this.
So last night I root the NC, using the auto nooter it wasn't hard at all, but there is a strange bug, after I reboot the NC, the Youtube stop working, can't even run it. I do remeber it worked fine just after rooting.
Another thing is some app on my NC have no sounds, sometime they works fine after a reboot, but after a while they always stop making any sounds, the OS sounds are still there, only not works in apps.
Over all I think I am happy with the new toy, gona buy one for my mom too, just wait for I fix the sounds and install Plants vs Zombies for her
Thx for reading this, and sorry for my english.
No android hardware buttons:
- There is an app posted in the nook dev subforum called SoftKeys - works great. It overlays the buttons on the screen.
No comic viewer:
- There's a couple. Search for ACV (Droid Comic Viewer)
Youtube not working:
- Uninstall, then reinstall. Easiest if you have ASTRO file manager or something similar
Audio issues:
- Dunno, haven't encountered the ones you mentioned, so far.
Grats on your new toy!
Where are you getting plants vs zombies? I just looked in the market and its not there. If someone has ripped it from the ipad please post it here I would love to have that game
Just purchased 1 for my wife 2 nights ago. I ended up playing with it too much that she suggested that I go ahead and buy one for myself, so I did. Planning to root it shortly.
I was really looking to get a galaxy tab but after playing with the nook I was pretty satisfied. I just could not justify spending another $300 or so for the tab, considering CES is also around the corner and new products will probably be unveiled. Looking to get a new phone with the $300 I saved. I am using an HD2 on Android at the moment and will wait till after the new year.
The Nook will be used mainly for reading, some surfing, maybe a few movies. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

my friend use a HTC desire HD, he gives me that game, don't test it myself, cuz NC is my 1st android dev, I wana install it after all the things are done, besides u need 2.2 OS to run it, it's a port from PC.
Maybe its me but I like the SD card slot. I mean its without a doubt not that easy to put it in and take it out but atleast its better than it being completely in the machine and unable to extract if it doesnt eject
as far as youtube... I think its easier using zeam but thats just me XD
hold it
move it to the trash icon
wait for it to say "uninstall"
uninstall
adb over the apk
enjoy
update: I found the sound is off every time NC goes to sleep mode, when it turns on again, show no sounds at all.

I have the same exact problem. I don't think it's an issue with all of them just some. Does this mean it's a hardware problem?
I have messed with Android here and there and drove 45miles to pick up a nook and got home and my laptop died. So from experience what is the most solid rom, I am not rom cracked out yet since I just got it just want to know which one people recommend for the most stability so far, and I am looking at the steps it takes as well. Any suggestions on anything would be greatly appreciated. Running version 1.0.1 .
I would say the rooted 1.1 stock rom to begin with and froyo on sdcard to play around with

thanks reading on how this stuff works
been in windows mobile world for a while and I work with linux daily but.....again laptop just died so will get it going. Thanks reading tutorials.
definitely stock rooted is the way to go for now.
ditto but overclock it.
thanks again guys reading as we speak
I placed the auto nooter on sd card and plugged in and .......I got two removeable disk. I see two batch files but still reading, this is not as straight forward for me as of yet in reading because like everything there is 10 ways to do it.

i suggest IOMonster rootpack sdimage, as i am always hosing my nook its become my sdcard of choice i have copies of all flashable roms, kernels and fixes on it. as well as anyother things i might need
thanks guys officially nooked
Really don't know what version as of yet have to get use to the home button bringing up action/control keys very cool device thanks so much to everyone
Ok about to step it up a bit guys
I like how you guys have the custom home screens without going to the extras, so I am looker for the next one up stable release from you guys expertise.
Some people are loading up alternative launchers like ADW or LauncherPro. Personally I like the stock look. LauncherPro and ADW are great on my phone but on the tablet it looks a bit hokey. I think the best setup is an overclocked stock rom right now but to each his/her own...
I got my nook Saturday. Here is what I did when I got home:
Upgraded to stock ROM 1.1
Rooted with Autonooter 3.0
Did some readin on the NookDevs site and XDA
Loaded Nookie Froyo 0.6.6 on SD

Both options are nice guys, I just want really to add the back button from the soft key option to the main menu and the (menu button). As far as performance it is fine for what I want it to do, no sure I will overclock it if it really hurts battery life, and I was lookin gat Nookie Froyo as well as Autonooter 3.0 since I used the 2.xx version (I am comparing the difference between them). Thanks again guys for the advice
For those who use the stock launcher, is there a way to add apps to the home screen on the stock launcher? I actually MUCH prefer B&N's launcher, but there's so much free real estate there, and I'd love to be able to launch TweetDeck, PerfectViewer, Kindle from there...
dual boot with froyo thats what i did no problems

Thanks for the update lol, I was like dang how long do I have to hold my finger there I am not sure I will dual boot I have enough of that and virtual machines going on in my life as is, I will wait for a new stable realease look the current nooker I am using with 1.0.1.
I just bought my nookColor yesterday and loving it so far. That said, I'd definitely prefer to have the Android marketplace on it and have more games, utilities, etc.
So I was going to root it later today, once I pick up a microSD card, but then I watched one of the 'I rooted my Nook' videos on youtube and the guy in the video mentioned that Barnes & Noble will be coming out with an update to FroYo in March.
So...should I wait to root? I'm assuming that BN's update will likely interfere or delete the root. I'm okay with having to re-root but wanted to see what people's thoughts were regarding the possibility of BN being jerks and if their update can sense a root and brick the Nook or cause problems?
I rooted my Nook and that's basically all I use it for now... The only reason to go to stock is to have the ability to use "read-to-me" books. You can't go wrong! But I can't give you advice on how the rooting will affect updates. Worst case scenario will be that you have to re-root.
Hope that helps; I'm a newbie too but haven't been disappointed yet!
I always thought there are ways to unroot and go back stock.
Check it out in development forum.

Personally I bought my NC specifically TO root it. Got it about a month ago and within an hour of purchase it was rooted and I never looked back.
I'm using just a basic root with stock eclair. Works for me just great. I run an overclocked kernel and launcher pro as my default launcher. Loving this thing!
Nookie froyo off of an SD card is good too and something you can setupt dual boot easily using guides in the dev forum.

I would start slow. just rooting opens up a lot of options with market/google apps and overclocking that should keep you busy while you read up on the other options. I don't like running firmware from the sd card but thats just me. you can also dual boot from internal memory which doesn't wipe your stock rom either.
what ever you do you can always go back to bone stock easily so don't worry about that.
Root it. I got mine 2 weeks ago... I'm not a software guy, I don't know any programming languages, and I've never rooted anything before (Nexus One is still plain vanilla) I tried Nookie Froyo and Honeycomb off of the SD card, but they weren't really all that functional. Neat, yes, but not much more than a novelty.
I went the AutoNooter route 2 days ago, and things are looking good. Working Youtube, Gmail, and other apps.

What was not functional about them? Also what is the downside of loading off of the SD card as opposed to internal memory, I mean other than having to purchase a large SD card I suppose?
I'm a complete 0 when it comes to Android.
Bought mine this morning, did the Nookie Froyo on the sdcard to run android, and it works wonderful! I bought it specifically to root. 249 for an android tablet? Why not!

Got to have something to do on Sunday!
What runs smoother? Froyo on SD or AutoNooter?
I'm buying a Nook today and going to root it and make it an Android tablet but there's sooooo many threads out there about this (and being updated every second), so I just wanted to know the basic - which is faster?
I don't like a choppy, sluggish OS...
Root it now. It is not much of a big deal anyway. You can return to stock in minutes if you like. I don't think that we have to wait for something better from B & N, even if they update to 2.2 (i don't think they would...). They don't want to sell a tablet but an e-reader with some extra capability( and they did it well), you can read your books, surf the net, listen to music, play videos.
They already announced bandmaster will release a version of honeycomb in the future.

Thought there might be some folks over here that would be interested in this very noob-oriented write-up:
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...color-now-what-aka-complete-idiots-guide.html
Especially since we should have a slew of new users heading our way after 11,000+ NC's were sold thanks to the eBay coupon.
+1 on this type of thread. The development section of this forum has my head spinning.
Most people will start out with auto nooter. Then install and choose from a a few different launchers. Then maybe a new kernel. Then move up to a Froyo build. And eventually, Honeycomb. But the definite path to do things isn't very strait forward. I've been installing ROM's on my OG Droid since the Sholes days but I'm finding this NC stuff muddy at best.
great write up OP. Wish I had this last night when I started messing with mine. I figured everything out through searching but did not make a backup. I have already tested out the dual boot roms, waiting on the C6 8gb card to get here to start playing with honeycomb.
Excellent - thanks !
Highly Recommended !
Wow, thanks mate! That's a fantastic writeup. It will save alot of people a lot of headaches and get them (including myself) up and going.

Nice. I'm a complete noobie to the Nooks - just bought mine yesterday and did a basic root. Love it so far. Can't wait for some stable HC builds come out.
@faceman66,
Thanks so much. I did not root nor did I do anything to the Nook Color since I am not sure about the tablet nor the e-reader. I got an Ipad for Xmas but returned it because it was kind of heavy and big and I want to do some spreadsheet work which requires either Excel or OpenOffice among other things.
Your tutorial about creating a bootable of the original ROM on a mSD was a great idea and is a must do item.
I created a mSD 8GB with Froyo and run the Nook off the mSD, so nothing on the Nook was impacted. so I thought, but I could be wrong.
Could you point out where I can find some help in the navigation of the Froyo version of android. There was no close button of the browser tabs, no forward nor backward buttons. There was some help file on the softkeys but no clear navigation of the file system.
I do not have an android phone so I am completely unfamiliar with android. I do want to learn android.
Faceman, thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive how-to! This will be incredibly valuable for many. Nice sense of humor too, btw.
I look forward to reading your "Barely smarter than idiot's guide to the CyanogenMod"
Hmmm. I did everything the article stated as far as the SoftKeys, but its not working like it said. Doesn't come up when I hit the physical home button nor does it have the volume buttons etc. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

You can push the files from this theme using ADB and it will give you back and menu softkeys on the status bar. However it will break your stock browser.

You're my target audience, thank you. Yes you can get a flashable Stock rom, it will put you at the start of the OOBE, which I found to be a hassle always having to "register" my NC when I wanted to start over. Which I did a lot since I am definitely a tinker-er. My suggestion just makes it quicker to start over - most folks won't use it at all.

A couple of things, once you root (if you do) there is a version of QuickOffice that someone ported from the Adam device which is awesome on the NC. Works almost like OpenOffice on the pc.
Running any rom from SD does not affect your internal eMMC (the internal system) but please pay attention to each SD Roms warnings - there are some actions you can do that WILL affect the internal. Such as formatting an SD from a rom running on an SD actually formats the /boot area of the internal giving you a "Aw crap, my nook won't boot past a black screen" issue which is fixable.
Since the NC lacks physical buttons, a program such as Softkeys or ButtonSavior (a major coke/pepsi flame war argument) are needed to add those buttons virtually. Many write-ups and threads available, just search them out.

Just to make sure, I think my softkeys might have updated from the one included with autonooter, but I am not sure. My version is 3.0.8, and that could be the cause of discrepancy. If someone can confirm, please let me know. I can tell you the key to sk working the way we want is to have Softkeys set as your 'default' launcher, then configure softkeys to be "one press softkeys, two press launcher" for the physical button.

While ADB may be over some folks head, it is VERY worthwhile to try to learn to use it. At least work on getting it installed and being able to successfully have it list you device - then it's always there as an option. But most things can be accomplished without it.

Thanks for the feedback. Any suggestions or critiques, I am planning to do an overhaul and update later today. All suggestions are welcome.
This weekend, I bought an Nook Color for my wife. She had been interested in an ipad, but as an android guy, I really wanted her to go the android route. We looked at a couple android tablets, and the size of the Nook was something she really liked. I told her I would have to play with the Nook before it could be a full-fledged tablet, which she was a little uneasy about, but let me go for it.
Searching this forum, I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Followed the instructions and wrote the image using Winimage, and installed the stable 7.03 on an old Kingston microSD card that I happened to have availble. Eveything worked, but the performance was horribe.
Then, I did some more searching, and found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633&highlight=how+I+learned+to+love
So, out I went to find a Sandisk Class 4 card. Got one (8GB), and redid the steps above. WOW! What a difference. It's like a completely different machine.
I like the ability to go back to the stock nook if we ever need to, which is easy to do just by taking out the SD card. However, I also found this thread, which then allowed me to boot into stock just by pressing the Nook button with the power button:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947698
The Nook Color is now a great little tablet. Honestly, I don't know if she will ever go back to the stock Nook, as the tablet version can do everything. I loaded the Nook app, the Kindle App, Adobe Reader, etc., so she can read books. I downloaded a crossword app, and some other games. She can browse the web, make up grocery lists, update her calender, etc.
The price of the NOOK is essentially the same price as an Ipod Touch. My kids are now fighting my wife for the use of the NOOK, while their Ipod touch remainds unused. I might just have to get another NOOK at some point...
I should point out that I'm a noob to all of this. My phone is an HTC Inspire 4G that is still stock and unrooted. But, doing some searching, some reading, and following the threads above made it all very easy.
Thanks!
+1
The devs deserve a hand.
I agree, thanks devs.
