Hboot and bricking risk - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
So I am still using Froyo and MIUI roms on my N1!
I updated the radio to latest korean already, now I am tempted to try a CM7 or OTA Rom and I think they require the new Hboot right?
The risk of bricking my N1 while upgrading the Hboot still possible?
Flashing it with RA recovery is dangerous?

You do not need the new hboot for CM7...

I thought you did need the latest one for ginger bread ROMs.
I recently updated my hboot to the latest hboot to prepare for ginger bread.

Most of the GB roms have made it so .33 works. I have been testing the new Desire S rom and it requires .35, so I updated.
Just flashed the zip thru recovery with usual precautions, esp Md5 verification.
On XDA CM7 Op page

I have been able to flash a variety of the latest Gingerbread ROMs without updating HBOOT.

[Q] Root after official FroYo update

Hey guys!
I received and installed the new Android 2.2 update over OTA. But I lost my root access. I tried rooting with Unrevoked: no success. So I'm asking if anyone knows how could I root my wildfire now.
Please help
Reading really seems to be a problem around here.

You can't root the OTA, htc updated the hboot, so wait until unrevoked release an updated version.
I think you'll have to downgrade to an older RUU and root to flash a custom froyo, but I think the new hboot prevents this.
Leaves me wondering why you guys waited for official froyo and then decide to root lol.

For example, I waited for the official FroYo for stability. I had my phone rooted, and I had installed RUU sometimes too (1.37 or 2.10 cn), and then Unrevoked, because they can be rooted. So I didn't think that now, I couldn't root the official froyo, so I tried it as I had already tried RUU's and succesfully rooted.
Some people is saying that there were a lot of adverts/advices saying not to install RUU's or OTA's because then they can't be rooted. But I'm relatively new on this so I didn't even see those posts. There are a lot and I didn't read all of them, so I didn't know.
When I saw official FroYo was out I decided to install it to then flash Jacob's kernel and being root. Before that, I had finally went back to stock 2.1, rooted and OC, because custom roms are often unstable.
Now, I'm waiting resigned to be able to root it and forget this nightmare of being enclosed in this ROM.
EDIT: And yes, the new hboot prevents downgrading...
Do you get now the reasons?

[Q] How to dowgrade from Gingerbread Radio to Froyo Radio?

I have an Incredible S running froyo. I used the alpha method to S-Off then I rooted the phone. Since I was rooted I decided to add a rooted gingerbread rom. I extracted the rom.zip from the gingerbread RUU for my phone and ran the rom.zip through the Rom Kitchen. Only option I picked was to root. (Kept it simple) The rom wouldn't flash. Kept getting stuck on the slash screen so I used recovery and went back to my working froyo backup. Then I decided to download CM7 rom and flash it. The same thing stuck on CM7 splash screen. Used recovery and went back to my working froyo backup. I figured maybe I need a gingerbread radio for the roms to boot. I installed eng hboot and flashed the gingerbread radio for my phone. I tried installing both my rom and the cm7 rom with no luck. Both roms get stuck on flash screen. So I used recovery to go back to my working froyo backup. Now I'm stuck with a Froyo rom and a Gingerbread radio.(No sound on calls) I tried flashing the original froyo radio but after flashing the froyo radio my phones go into a boot loop with the HTC splash screen. So I flash the gingerbread radio and phone boots up and works again except no sound on the calls because of the gingerbread radio.
So my question. How do I downgrade from a gingerbread radio to a froyo radio? The flash methods I used to originally flash my radio do not work.
Glad to know I'm not the only one that bricked it like that xD... I don't think you can
downgrade... I am thinking about maybe trying to flash Optus through fastboot, but I'm unsure if that will work... But another option is to use a ROM like Revolution or CM7 which are gingerbread.
Same here bro!!!
Same here bros
I got my IS with foryo 2.2, was working fine. I thought to update to gingerbread but was not aware then i will not be able to downgrade or S-OFF.
I just got Gingerbread OTA update of 83.3MB, just updated and now its working fine but
no S-OFF, no customer recovery, no Custom roms
dieing to Downgrade so that i can do S-OFF for rooting and custom rom installation
ANY BODY HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First try the AlphaRevX method to S-Off. From there you should be able to install custom recovery, root, and install custom roms. If you can not S-Off with the AlphaRevX method then install a gingerbread rom on your phone from another region through gold card method then use the AlphaRevX method to S-Off. (Most people been using the Australia Optus Rom)

Yeah that is the method I used. I thought with eng hboot I had the flexability to bounce between radios but for what ever reason once you go to a gingerbread you can't go back to a froyo radio.

Questions about flashing roms/radios via HBOOT vs. CWM on the Incredible S

I'm a brand new Canadian Incredible S owner looking to root and flash new roms. I've been reading a lot of forum posts and have some questions about flashing roms and radios. I'm coming from the Desire (Bravo) and on that phone, I've always flashed roms and radios via CWM recovery. However, it seems that for the IncS, many users have instead flashed them through HBOOT.
Here's what I want to do:
- Apply S-OFF via Alpharevx, install CWM, and root
- Take the 2.30.405.1 stock GB ruu, extract the rom.zip, remove the HBOOT and recovery files, and root it via dsixda's kitchen
- Flash the rooted GB rom and radio via CWM
So...can it be done this way through CWM? Or does the flashing of both the rom and radio have to go through HBOOT?
I apologize if this topic has been mentioned before, but it seems as if things aren't quite as simple as my old Desire was and I want to make sure that what I'm planning to do won't ruin the phone.
I'm not sure about this, but I think you can flash .zip ( Rom, radio, recovery etc) either through hboot or recovery, only difference being that for hboot the zip has to have the specific name ( PG32IMG.zip or sometimes like that). Could somebody confirm if this is correct ?

The latest version of dsixda's HTC kitchen now supports adding a radio.img to the rom.zip file that gets generated, so you can just flash your custom rom using CWM and not have to flash the GB radio separately.
Thanks for the info. If I do this through CWM, do I still have to worry about changing the Model ID since I have the Canadian model? Or is that something that only comes up if I flash through HBOOT?
And I'm guessing that I only have to worry about having the ENG HBOOT if I flash the radio through HBOOT. This also shouldn't be an issue if I do it through CWM as well. Is this right?

No you don't have to worry about changing the Model ID when you flash a custom ROM using CWM. It only comes into play when flashing a PG32IMG.zip using HBOOT.
In fact I have already done the process you are going to undertake. I have a Canadian IncS and I took the latest 2.30.405.1 WWE ROM.zip and cooked it using dsixda's kitchen and my Phone Info now shows Model Number HTC IncS S710e, not S710a as it did before.

S-off easier from Froyo or Gingerbread ?

recently bought a HTC incredible S with 2.2.1 on it.
i want to put a custom ROM on at some point. but over the last couple of weeks it has been prompting me to accept an OTA update to 2.3.
interested to download it and see what the differences are, but not if it makes the phone harder to S-OFF and install a custom ROM later.
Can anyone advise please ?
With revolutionary it doesn't matter if its froyo or ginger its the same process. The only difference is the flashing of a radio. Obviously for gb you need a gb radio and froyo you need a froyo radio.

[Q] Giving Up Already

After downgrading my G1 to version 1.0. I installed a cupcake rom v1.5. rooted the phone..am having problem installing Gingerbread.. Any full help on how to go about it will be really appreciated. Thanks
the problem most likely is an incompatible radio/spl with the rom you are planning to use. most of the "newer" roms require the 2708+ update.
boot into hboot and check what you have
